Thats a little meaner than I'm actually feeling about it but I can't edit it lol

u/Exotic_Treacle7438 Sep 10 '26

The comment section is the reason we have $9 Oreos and $11 packs of soda. Enough people buy shit at insane prices to sustain companies. Eventually everyone finds their wtf-prices

84

u/Usual_Ice636 Sep 10 '26

OP is the reason we have that.

They're the one complaining and buying it anyways.

42

u/LemmyLola Sep 10 '26

I got a Sodastream and a big tank of gas from the fire extinguisher place, and a cheap kit on Amazon to rig it up. Lol thats how long ago buying soft drinks at the grocery store pissed me off . And yeah those Oreos.. and the quality of things, I used to actually like Kraft Dinner once in a while... But they quadrupled the price and swapped out the actual noodles for whatever the hell there's way less of in the box now. We have learned a lot of things we can just make at home as prices have gone up. Including snooty coffee lol

25

u/ChaosFinalForm Sep 10 '26

Tried the store brand golden Oreos last night since they were $3 and legit ones were freaking $7.

Not even gonna lie. I liked them better.

14

u/Complete_Entry Sep 10 '26

The store brand likely hasn't been "reformulated".

u/Playful_Assistance89 Sep 10 '26

While I agree with you generally, Kraft dinners a really poor argument on your part. As a 'poor people' food, it has remained remarkably price-stable, is still and always has been 7oz, and only underwent a recipe change about 7 or 8 years ago when they got rid of artificial dyes well ahead of any government mandate.

If you want to make your Kraft dinner taste like when you were a kid, stir in 1 tsp MSG after you add the cheese packet. It will make it taste cheesy again to your older, more refined palate.

And, they just fixed the boxes, so now the "Press here to open" spot actually opens. From what I learned in another thread from the dude that works in the box factory where they are made, Kraft invested something like $20M into that machine alone.

Is that before or after consumption?

807

u/Puzzled_Artichoke281 Sep 10 '26

That’s hot off the presses. I was informed up front the jars were 12 oz. I was not informed that this is the amount they actually served.

418

u/7-10Spliff Sep 10 '26

Oh I was thinking more along the lines of it coming out the other end, those remind me of the jars in somebody else's post showing off their piss collection a while back

1.1k

Some coffee places are doing this now as a paper cup replacement. Bring the jar back get a dollar off

1.1k

u/CodeCat0 Sep 10 '26

Bring the jar back get a dollar off

You could have gotten reasonably priced coffee if you'd just brought back 15 jars.

309

u/New_Libran Sep 10 '26

They hate this one trick

122

u/ImDero Sep 10 '26

They also apparently hate making coffee because those two jars look weak af

26

u/Big_Balls_n_Taint Sep 10 '26

They look a lot like the type of jars that split around the bottom when you pour hot liquid in 😂

When I was in basic training my sargent randomly shook my canteen during a class, it was pretty much empty. He goes "Good, Afghanistan is hot. Go get more." To this day I still drink A LOT of water every day. We also had a platoonmate go down with hyponatremia, so we really found the sweet spot.

Reminds me of the guy that spent $30 on Doordash McDonald's that would normally be $14, and then posted a pic of the order while complaining about the price. Can't complain if you deliberately made the decision to overpay.

116

u/Successful_Maize1986 Sep 10 '26

Or the guy who complained that feeding yourself at Wendy’s is way too expensive and then showed that he and his wife ordered a truly absurd amount of food lol

44

u/BPKofficial Sep 10 '26

Or like how my ex-wife complained that her $150 haircut at Aveda was insane, yet insisted on getting her hair cut there and nowhere else.

Last week I forgot my lunch so I ordered a small burrito, chips and guac and a lemonade on Uber Eats for $26, plus tip. When the food arrived, I paid him in cash, forgetting that when I order it on Uber its automatically charged to my credit card. I paid $60 for lunch and made a delivery drivers day.

5 euro, for a coffee? that is still too much...

38

u/vulcanstrike Sep 10 '26

Depends where you are. In the Netherlands, 4+ is pretty standard cafe prices, even supermarket kiosk coffee is going to be 2+

You can refuse to pay it, but that means you aren't going to cafes. All depends on where your line in the sand is.

52

u/TheDayManAhAhAh Sep 10 '26

Even then, that's expensive for pour over. But OP still paid for it

What part of Portland was this?

27

Really good coffee in portland is surprisingly reasonably priced due to extreme competition. I'm sure there are a few shops like that but most people here would look at that and go two doors down to someone better.

I know the shop this came from - this is your fault, point blank period.

For those in the comments who guessed this is a specialty coffee shop, you would be correct. **Some of their beans are priced incredibly high due to being imports of fairly rare/unique quality, and it isn’t like the price of them are hidden in any way.

They also do not accept tips and are very explicit about this both online and within the shop itself as they want to pay their baristas a livable wage, so that price is instead included in the drinks themselves.

If you don’t like the price tag on a coffee from a shop that explicitly promotes itself as a premium coffee shop, I suggest you go get yourself some Starbucks or Dunkin.

11

u/SunDevil2013 Sep 10 '26

$17 total $8.5/coffee Minus 7% Indiana sales tax ($0.55) Minus 15% implied tip Amberson Coffee has a no tip policy ($1.03)

Assuming the pricing caught OP off guard, they’re probably not returning with a jar so they paid the $1 jar deposit on this first coffee. ($1)

$5.92 implied pre-tax/pre-tip/pre-deposit coffee.

It’s 2026 and it’s a coffee from likely a top coffee shop in the Indianapolis area…. For basically $6 on the menu.

OP willingly walked into this place, likely saw all the signage for jar deposit, no tip program, and hopefully knows that tax exists… paid for the coffee and decided the best thing was to complain on the internet.

Hate it or not, you willingly purchased that coffee and $6 gross for a cup of coffee at a place like this is reasonable.

7

u/Laiska_saunatonttu Sep 10 '26

The infuriation part is that you actually paid for them.

6

u/Forgiven4108 Sep 10 '26

But you could have said no. You didn’t, so stop whining.

15

u/Swoop03 Sep 10 '26

And yet you still drove away with them?

Wife and I stopped at this new 7brew place that opened up in town a couple months ago, never heard of them but everyone says its good stuff. Drive through only, no menu (it's on an app I found out), and was $19 something for a large coffee no cream/sugar and iced Carmel latte for her. I told them no thanks cancel it and drove out of line, went next door to McDonald's and got 2 large iced coffees for $6. We brew at home but it sure is nice to grab a cup hot or cold while your out, but certainly not at those prices and its probably no better than Starbucks or any other overpriced chain restaurant. Wouldn't be surprised if they all get the coffee from the same place like Cisco or something.

12

u/CandlejackIsntEvenRe Sep 10 '26

As someone in the industry, ill play devils advocate for a minute-

They don’t have a drip coffee option, which means these were probably pour overs at market price. Looks like their pour overs cost anywhere from 7-8 dollars each based on said market price. Which is fairly standard for the quality of coffee they get and/or roast. (And they don’t accept tips which means they pay their people which is nice, but also get put into the price equation). It’s not some Folgers BS or pre-ground stuff they ordered from Sysco. The C-market (its the commodities market for coffee and goods. Essentially it’s the coffee stock market) on coffee is INSANELY high and has been for the last couple years and keeps rising, and doesnt look like it’s letting up anytime soon. This drives up the price per pound of RAW coffee to like $5-6/lb for average coffees and $7-12+/lb for higher end/more experimental beans. Basically if the company doesnt own their own farm, prices are gonna be up because theyre getting nickeled and dimed from the first click of their purchase to the time the pallet shows up at their door.

Usually these places that take the coffee seriously (admittedly sometimes TOO seriously) have set ratios theyve found taste best, which makes sense for the 6-8oz of coffee you got in the 12oz jar. A latte or americano would have filled them up im sure. Seems like they only have one size jar for to go orders.

Now… it just may not be your thing and that’s totally fair. Coffee is subjective and for a lack of a better term, third wave style etc might just not be your cup of tea. And in all honesty it can get crazy pricey.

You had the option not to, but decided to pay and then rant?
Is this the first time you paid for coffee? If not then you should have known what to expect. You could brew a huge pot at home and have all the coffee you want, without killing your wallet. 🤷🏻‍♂️

why wouldn't they charge this if people are willing to pay it?

You can't complain about this if you willingly spent your money on coffee this expensive.

If you paid 17 dollars for that, you don't deserve 17 dollars.
