You gotta meet Flo! I don't know his real name, where he's from or where he went, but if you meet a generous man with coke in a nasal spray bottle, that's your man!
I get coffee from the field behind my house, pretty much as fresh as it gets. My creamer is made from fresh milk that’s milked at a dairy farm 3k away.
let the guy enjoy is shitty watery coffee man. he's just going to continue throwing stupid brand names at you like that makes up for him drinking shitwater.
tbf french roast isn't always "cheap" and was considered top notch specialty coffee like 20-30 years ago. Coffee has trends just like anything else.
That being said because most specialty coffee has moved to light/medium roast (for good reason) it is safe to assume that pretty much any dark roast is shit and cheap.
But I wanted to split hairs bc dark roast doesn't always automatically = cheap.
They could have been considered top notch but doesn’t mean they were by today’s standards. There’s no reason to roast beans “dark” other than to hide defects and inconsistencies, or to appeal to people that don’t know how to drink coffee any other way.
I'm certain it's pour-over. This is most likely specialty coffee. If it is specialty it demands a higher price because it requires much more care, attention and experimentation than a classic cup.
It's like comparing a hershey's chocolate bar to a single-origin, fair trade dark chocolate. Or a fast food hamburger to one you make yourself off a grill. They're both edible, they both do the trick, but there's a difference in price point for a reason.
Got a chuckle out of me that you don't mention the Hershey chocolate vs single-origin fair trade dark chocolate and say you don't understand the point.
Instead of a homemade burger compare a michelin starred restaurant burger vs a fast food burger. Michelin burger will be 3x the cost of a fast food burger but is still just meat, bread, and extras that you'll poop out in a day
In the same way that a rum nicer than Bacardi or a tequila better than Jose Cuervo is pretentious and unnecessary - sure.
If you’re drinking it for the buzz, whatever stuff you have is great. If you’re drinking it because you enjoy the flavor, the upper limit is what you can afford.
It’s not, some people enjoy the differences in flavors among specialty coffee. It’s a hobby like craft beer. People can certainly go about it in a pretentious manner. Those stupid espresso workflow videos certainly don’t help haha
That’s like saying a well-cooked premium cut of steak is pretentious and unnecessary because you could just eat hamburger. They’re different foods for different markets
It's a ridiculous price even for specialty coffee but for anyone that drinks coffee it's worth trying out a pourover. Most people haven't had a coffee that doesn't demand dairy/sweetener to be enjoyable
It's not theatrics, it's just that pour over has to be done by hand and can't be made in a big batch in a machine, so you are paying for the extra labor.
Playing off whiskey as if it doesnt get pretentious is pretty funny to me. They're doing as much bullshit as anybody but maybe that's just because of my proximity to bourbon land
I am not a coffee person by any means, but I thought it was supposed to be black? Where I am from coffee is usually drunk with milk anyhow, but before the milk is added it's an opaque black colour.
Indianapolis, I believe it is Amberson Coffee & Grocer. Whatever OP got was their own fault though. Never had something come out looking like that from them
Probably, but it's hard to blame people for not knowing that. I mean my dad drank Folgers when I was growing up. Cheap coffee is a... cheap way to get some energy.
Top tier beans that actually express the fruity notes inherent in coffee beans (a fruit after all) are pricey and take a bit more time to prepare.
If everyone drank top tier brew, it would be completely unaffordable.
Go on their Google reviews and the first one you see has the same thing pictured here. A quarter-half jar of “top shelf” coffee. No opinions about this place but just pointing out that it’s clearly an option here, and that it disappoints people.
It disappoints one person at least from the 100 reviews I skimmed. That place has some pretty phenomenal feedback.
But top tier coffee is a whole different world from Starbucks or Folgers. Coffee is a fruit and tastes like it when good beans are roasted lightly. The traditional "burnt" taste in every day coffee comes from the beans... being burnt.
I will forever love this movie because when I watched it with my 13yo daughter recently, as Simba is presented to the animals she exclaimed, "Wait, he doesn't yeet him?" because she's only ever seen the memes.
Interesting that one of their Google reviews says a regular serving of coffee is 4 Oz and a latte is 12 Oz but the difference is not explicitly mentioned. So if you want a large coffee, you're payjng out the ass. Also, great on them for being environmentally friendly but getting a hot coffee in a random glass jar is 1) uncomfortable to hold and 2) hard to trust measurements. Insane way of doing things if you ask me lol.
For everyone deeply confused by the term "3rd wave," it means coffee that is sourced from a single origin and then roasted in-house.
First wave is the European espresso.
Second wave is coffee beans sourced from wherever they are cheapest, mixed altogether and then mass roasted into oblivion to make affordable drip coffees in the western world. Think Folgers, and then much later- Starbucks.
Third wave is obviously going to be more expensive if it is sourced from a single origin (Peru, Ethiopia, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, Colombia etc: these are the best beans because they come from the volcanic aftermath of the ring of fire surrounding the equator and have perfect pH soils for growing aromatic and complex beans) typically brought over quickly, and roasted in-house, means the coffee makers have to buy their own equipment instead of having it done at a huge warehouse.
I'm not justifying the price. I'm just giving a little history lesson from a hospitality veteran, who fucking loves coffee.

That's.... Coffee? In what corner of hell?!
