Video PS5 Emulation becoming viable on lower end PCs!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Using Jetsku's KytyPS5 Fork as it has some fixes in both Astro games.
Build is an RTX 5060 + Ryzen 5 5600GT (Same performance as a 5500, 6c/12t), 16GB RAM. Game is Astro's Playroom.
It's still getting around 35 fps in the main lobby, but inside the actual levels its hovering around 45-60fps! Not sure I'd call it fully playable yet, but the progress is amazing.
More gameplay and settings used, guide (english subtitled): https://youtu.be/yMw7_cGbicw
Edit: fixed link. Meant lower end when compared to most showcases of these emulators being 5090s, X3D chips and DDR5... Better wording would be "current-generation lower end".
Also, people seem to be wildly overestimating the 5600gt. Genuinely can't run any triple-A RPCS3 game at a locked 30fps.

This hardware is almost on the level of the PS5 itself. Emulation has always required hardware that is noticeably more powerful than the emulated hardware, so in this case, it is lower-end.

u/Mobile_Antelope1048 10h ago
It’s not emulating tho, it’s more of a translation layer like proton

Yeah but functionally it does the same thing. Translation requires less system overhead, but requires some system overhead nonetheless.

I have heard about this, that KytyPS5 and AnyPS5 are practically the same thing. But if I understand correctly, some part is still being emulated for now, rather than fully working as a translation layer?
13
u/Mobile_Antelope1048 10h ago
I’m not well versed enough to explain.
But translating is wayyyyy less ressources hungry than emulating. So once optimized it should be pretty ‘light’
17
u/necessarycoot72 10h ago
in essence, an emulator is emulating the hardware in software. A translation layer is different. instead of emulating hardware, you translate, in this case ps5 system calls into something windows or Linux can understand.
a windows to Linux translation layer like wine and proton has very little overhead. so little in fact that you can play competitive FPS games with little difference in performance. Only difference between KytyPS5 and wine is that wine has 30 years of Dev time meanwhile KytyPS5 has less than a year though AI might make up for this short coming. only time will tell.
11
u/KilloMaster 9h ago
Translation is really like two people having a conversation with each other but needing a third to translate everything. It works but takes a little bit of time, because the sentences needs to be far along to have the right context.
Emulation is just you out with your dictionary and trying to understand it all, you’ll get there but it takes time. Take a group of friend with you and you’ll get there faster.
3
u/StudyPuzzleheaded413 10h ago
I know. It's just that on KytyPS5's GitHub, project is described as both a translation layer and an emulator at the same time.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Literallyapig 2h ago
they're not really the same thing. kytyPS5 is a real-time translation layer, anyPS5 actually converts the ps5 binary to the system's native binary format (ELF for linux, PE for windows) and links it to a reimplementation of ps5's system libraries, with the shaders being converted to SPIR-V. in simpler terms, it basically ports the game to your system of choice (linux and windows are the one supported).
anyPS5 would be closer to N64Recomp or XenonRecomp (for 360), but anyps5 seems to aim at being much more straightforward to use.

Lower end is things like the GTX 1050 Ti, Radeon 760M, ARC A380 & below to me. Maybe at most i'd say things like the GTX 1650/Radeon 780M/Intel ARC 7Xe are low end (but those are still quite potent as is).
I'd hardly call a 2080 low end though. That's not low end in the slightest, even in 2026. That's lower mid range imho. Go to places where real low end systems are common (i.e r/lowendgaming) & they'd laugh at you calling a 2080 low end.

Yeah? The PS5's apu is technically on par with a 3060 in terms of raster performance, and that card only launched a year after the ps5
The point is to showcase that entry level systems can emulate PS5 games though, not to compare the PS5 to modern hardware
2
u/mackerelscalemask 4h ago
I wonder how well an 8GB 3060 would do with this app? Must be a bit short of native PS5 performance due to translation layer and current state of the code (early alpha).

They are absolutely not entry level cards. Holy cow Nvidia marketing has done a number on the public. Just because they axed their 30 level cards doesn’t mean the 60 level becomes bottom barrel, did we just totally forget the 5050 exists? An entry level card does not have a $300 MSRP even in 2026 dollars.
52
u/reader4567890 7h ago
5050 is low end too. This isn't simple, the 5060 is an entry level gaming GPU of the current gen. Price doesn't come into it.
By the amazing logic displayed in these comments, a 1070 isn't low end because the 970 exists.
33
u/Xecular_Official R9 9950X3D | RTX 4090 | 2x48GB DDR5 | Alphacool 9h ago
The msrp difference between the 5050 and 5060 is only ~$50. I'd argue that the 60 series are still entry level cards even if they aren't the absolute cheapest model Nvidia offers
A different brand would be a better value anyways for someone who is on a tight enough budget for $50 to matter

I played Astro Bot last year on the PS5 Pro and it was a really fun experience, does this emulation (or whatever it is) have full support for the Dualsense?
Trust me, if you are gonna play it, it has to be using full features.
13
u/agente4242 RTX 5060 | R5 5600GT | 16GB DDR4 9h ago
Yep, dualsense is fully supported. In fact, either a dualshock 4 or a dualsense is required in Astro games due to the touchpad mechanics. No way to get around it currently, as far as im aware.
2
u/BlueTemplar85 9h ago
Wait, what touchpad mechanics, and why other controllers with touchpads (like the two Steam Controllers) would not work ?
6
u/agente4242 RTX 5060 | R5 5600GT | 16GB DDR4 7h ago
There's a level (in Astro's Playroom at least) where you control your character using the touchpad only. I'm assuming steam controller wouldnt work because its touchpad simply acts as a mouse, and a mouse doesn't work in that level.
2
u/Entitled-Prick 7h ago
Different ways that they're coded if I'm not mistaken. The Steam controllers basically have two small mouse track pads on them, and they're coded as such for use with steam's UI (like using them to type in tandem on a Steam Deck). The PS5 controllers are straight up touch pads that have parameters built to be natively recognized by the game/emulation. Hopefully they'll add in support for others in the long run too.
2
u/BlueTemplar85 6h ago
So there are no actual physical differences, it's just driver(-interfacing) support that is still missing in the 'emulator' ?

u/Cookies3000 PC Master Race 9h ago edited 9h ago
I find these posts a bit misleading. Ive tried the emulator with Astro Bot too, with that certain fork of the emu and even the non RT fixes.
What nobody talks about in these posts is that shader compilation is a huge problem.
The game basically freezes, it drops to 0-5fps because the GPU has to wait for the CPU. And thats every time a new asset/animation or any other visual effect in general gets loaded. Its not a very playable experience.
Once I played thru a level before and I play it again its nice and smooth 60fps because its cached. You basically have to play thru the whole game once to have a decent experience the second time.
32
u/PeachMan- R7 5700X3D, RX 7800XT 8h ago
Shader compilation is always a big hurdle for new emulators. Go look up old threads about CEMU alpha builds with shader compilation issues. I used to have to do the same thing; load a level a few times before it ran smoothly. But it's not an issue anymore.
This emulator is not ready for prime time yet, but that's fine. This progress is very encouraging.

Couldn't this just be resolved by forcing shaders to pre compile on game launch?
4
u/VickZilla 6h ago
The way games are programmed now they don’t really announce that kind of stuff ahead of time. It takes a lot of effort to find out the shaders you need in advance
→ More replies (3)3
u/Virtual_Bar7818 6h ago
Is this what Sony made a whole big deal about with their storage speeds?
3
u/VickZilla 6h ago
That’s part of it yeah! But the biggest different that those speeds make would be for much larger assets like textures and models that are live streamed into the game to minimize loading screens
Shaders are very small but they require CPU cycles to get compiled which is where the stutter comes from

It's typical PCMR misunderstanding of the world outside this community
Someone getting into gaming on a budget at the low end is more likely to get a used 2070
Someone really on a budget might even get a 1080, which you can get for £100 in the UK and can still handle 1080/60 in a lot of cases. That's low end, budget gaming, not a fucking 5060 lmao

I also hope so. Static recomps require far less CPU power.
2
u/Fickle-Culture8252 7h ago
That would make a lot of sense, wouldn’t it?
Emulation is not that different from programming languages that work on top of some model of virtual machine (e.g. Java and JVM).
First step for languages+VM is interpretation (emulation): just interpret the (byte)code as it comes. But it’s slow, so you try to implement JIT compilation that would be creating native code.
And if you can just static compile it… well, why wouldn’t you?
