Video PS5 Emulation becoming viable on lower end PCs!

Using Jetsku's KytyPS5 Fork as it has some fixes in both Astro games.

Build is an RTX 5060 + Ryzen 5 5600GT (Same performance as a 5500, 6c/12t), 16GB RAM. Game is Astro's Playroom.

It's still getting around 35 fps in the main lobby, but inside the actual levels its hovering around 45-60fps! Not sure I'd call it fully playable yet, but the progress is amazing.

More gameplay and settings used, guide (english subtitled): https://youtu.be/yMw7_cGbicw

Edit: fixed link. Meant lower end when compared to most showcases of these emulators being 5090s, X3D chips and DDR5... Better wording would be "current-generation lower end".

Also, people seem to be wildly overestimating the 5600gt. Genuinely can't run any triple-A RPCS3 game at a locked 30fps.

It’s not emulating tho, it’s more of a translation layer like proton

Yeah but functionally it does the same thing. Translation requires less system overhead, but requires some system overhead nonetheless.

Really impressive tech. I've been playing Dark Souls Remastered on my Z Fold 8. Lol

How do you play dark souls on your z fold? Emulating it through Eden?

GameNative :) it uses wine and a VM of Linux locally on the phone. Runs pretty good! 60fps 720p!

I don't know how I forgot the things you can do with android...

Now you can use droiddeck to install an android version of genuine SteamOS lmao

Phones are now mini-steam decks

Give DroidDeck a shot, too. Been using it on my S24 Ultra and been doing another Skyrim playthrough for shits 'n' giggles. Runs just fine on medium settings, barring typical Bethesda jank.

Tbh Dark Souls Remastered runs ~60fps at 720p on 8gen2.(Thats how I beat it last time. Galaxy tab s9 11".)

Might be 1080p then, I just assumed it defaulted to 720p

Fair enough, If I had a device with a newer chip and more ram I would most likely try and get elden ring and bloodborne to a playable state.

Edit: I bet ds3 would be great on the fold. Hope you enjoy that fun gadget!

Also runs 1080p60 on retroid pocket 6.

Usually use my Folds to stream Moonlight (local is like >5ms latency and ~30ms remote) but jfc we are progressing rapidly on the mobile side. I think it was maybe a week between getting Frame and seeing compatibility appear for Snapdragon processors. Crazy since the Frame uses gen 3 chips and the Fold 8 uses a gen 5.

I have heard about this, that KytyPS5 and AnyPS5 are practically the same thing. But if I understand correctly, some part is still being emulated for now, rather than fully working as a translation layer?

I’m not well versed enough to explain.

But translating is wayyyyy less ressources hungry than emulating. So once optimized it should be pretty ‘light’

in essence, an emulator is emulating the hardware in software. A translation layer is different. instead of emulating hardware, you translate, in this case ps5 system calls into something windows or Linux can understand.

a windows to Linux translation layer like wine and proton has very little overhead. so little in fact that you can play competitive FPS games with little difference in performance. Only difference between KytyPS5 and wine is that wine has 30 years of Dev time meanwhile KytyPS5 has less than a year though AI might make up for this short coming. only time will tell.

Translation is really like two people having a conversation with each other but needing a third to translate everything. It works but takes a little bit of time, because the sentences needs to be far along to have the right context.

Emulation is just you out with your dictionary and trying to understand it all, you’ll get there but it takes time. Take a group of friend with you and you’ll get there faster.

I know. It's just that on KytyPS5's GitHub, project is described as both a translation layer and an emulator at the same time.

Could just be because emulation is a concept a lot of people already understand and the end result is the same. If you tell people it's doing the job of an emulator then they'll probably understand enough without needing further explanation.

I dunno, AnyPS5, for example, explicitly stated on its github page that it is not emulation, so that people wouldn't get confused.

It's just a guess. If you want a concrete answer you might have to message the devs.

they're not really the same thing. kytyPS5 is a real-time translation layer, anyPS5 actually converts the ps5 binary to the system's native binary format (ELF for linux, PE for windows) and links it to a reimplementation of ps5's system libraries, with the shaders being converted to SPIR-V. in simpler terms, it basically ports the game to your system of choice (linux and windows are the one supported).

anyPS5 would be closer to N64Recomp or XenonRecomp (for 360), but anyps5 seems to aim at being much more straightforward to use.

Kytyps5 is an emulator

Technically important. Functionally just a pointless technicality that few people care about.

Isn't that exactly what emulation is?

3

u/mekwall 11h ago

Not quite. A translation layer converts calls from one API or system interface into something the host supports. Proton, for example, translates Windows API calls and DirectX instructions to Linux-compatible equivalents, while the game's x86-64 code runs natively.

Emulation is broader. It recreates the behaviour of another system, which can involve emulating hardware, CPU instructions, operating system services, or some combination of those.

The distinction isn't absolute, though. Modern emulators often use translation layers internally. Since the PS5 and modern PCs both use x86-64 CPUs, there's no need to emulate most CPU instructions. But recreating the PS5's system interfaces and hardware behaviour is still emulation. It's just much more efficient than emulating an entirely different CPU architecture.

2

u/King_Ass_Ripper69420 11h ago

Not exactly, but for high level emulation, its very a similar concept.

2

u/Newtonjar Asus RoG 10h ago

Not quite. For example, one of the most famous translation layer software is called Wine (which proton is built on iirc) which recursively stands for wine Is not an emulator

I'm not the most technical person, so I wouldn't be able to articulate the minutiae

Emulation is software that is mimicking hardware, meaning if you emulate n64, you are emulating the hardware (the n64) and then running the software (the game) inside that hardware emulation.
