This is the Weekly Question thread designed to allow players to ask their one-off tactical or rules clarification questions in one easy to find place on the sub.
This means that those questions will get guaranteed visibility, while also limiting the amount of one-off question posts that can usually be answered by the first commenter.
Have a question? Post it here! Know the answer? Don't be shy!
NOTE - this thread is also intended to be for higher level questions about the meta, rules interactions, FAQ/Errata clarifications, etc. This is not strictly for beginner questions only!
When do pre-orders and new releases go live?
Pre-orders and new releases go live on Saturdays at the following times:

To the level that it almost never makes it into your lists, or seen others run them much except as a meme. Running a survey here, trying to find out whether other factions have these as well.

Hey all! It is once again time for another app update. Most of you noticed the MFM was updated with the new points, but we now also have the full AC codex drop for the app and a load of other changes.
According to my own, obviously bad (since I'm mostly a coder, not a pro player 😂), opinion it is a ton of clean up for previous patch notes.
First of all, the Callidus seems to have lost Precision on her shooting? Not sure why that is or if it was mentioned anywhere. No longer the character killer of old. She did receive Blast 2 on the Neural Shredder though.
[edit] I'm an idiot. Seems Torrent weapons can't have Precision. That was already in the core rules 🫣 [/edit]
All AP on Chaos stuff was changed to -1 instead of 1. Seems to be a chore update.
Belial can finally be attached to a Terminator Assault Squad.
BA Death Company Captain got hit hard with the nerf stick on its power fist. Went to 3 attacks on a 3+!
There were a lot of changes to the FAQs, but I'm not sure if that was just because the AC ones got removed and others got shuffled around or not. So take a good peak at the Core Rules changelog on GDM to make sure!
Get the full patch notes here for both Factions & Core Rules:

Hey all,
I gathered all the tournament results from BCP for last week, including all Tournaments with at least 20 players and 5 rounds.
All the data is here on my site:
https://warpfriends.wordpress.com/2026/10/14/40k-11th-meta-stats-from-october-12-2026/
Please take a look and let me know if you have any suggestions (I know the site is not pretty 😞 I focus more on the Youtube side of things) And feel free to check out my youtube video for indepth breakdown of the stats!
Also I created Army Report cards for every army, detailing all the relevant information, check them out here:

****META CARDS ARE BACK****
Thanks!

With the new Space Marines codex out, I expected to see fewer Scouts in competitive tournament lists. However, it seems like almost every competitive list is still bringing 1 or 2 units.
I have tried running Scouts in a few games, but I feel like I'm not getting the most out of them.
I often hear people say they're used "for scoring secondaries," but is that really the whole story? I’d love some insight into their core strategy:

I got some great advice yesterday about how to change my Space Marine collection into a more viable list for competing. Basically, I have no bricks. I only have minimum squad counts of a lot of units.
I am leaning towards detachments like Assault or Devastator Brethren, Tacitus Attack Force, and Ironstorm Spearhead. This means I'd prefer Tacitus units, no agressors or heavy intercessor bricks.
I have a Repulsor and a Repulsor Executioner as my only transports right now.
So which of the following below would you recommend? I already have half of these squads already.
Bladeguard Veterans: I think this is the obvious first choice, I have a chaplain or a lieutenant to lead them.
Hellblasters: A box of 10 to form a brick around a lieutenant might be fun. Plus, I could see it being fun to run 2 squads of these, 1 x5 and 1 x10.
Sternguard Veterans: Because their datasheet changed so much, this one is a bit variable.
Jump Pack Intercessors: I've read conflicting things about a brick of these guys. I think it would be cool, as I loved painting them. But I also don't currently have a jump pack character, which I want a captain for the cool factor and I like their ability for movement buffs.
Thank you!

Playing a mele dark angels - Lion, icc, deathwing knights. Seems obvious that my skirmish units should screen against nators ingress. By math they seem to one tap most of my hammers and anvils, meanwhile I kills mostly half the squad. Should I just avoid them and screen with chaf while lion deals with other parts of the opponent army? -1 damage stray also seems to bother me.

I'm having a hard time evaluating these two.
I usually run a heavy dreadnought Iron Hands list and losing the +1 to hit on techmarines and incursors has hurt severely.
Wondering if Infernus Squads are the new Incusor flavour given that:
A) The majority of enemy units will be affected by cover (which Infernus strips)
B) Infernus has better shooting than Incursors overall
C) Negating cover (+1 to BS) is statistically better than rerolls of 1 provided by the Incursors
The only downside being that Infernus only has a range of 12".
On top of this, the Dreadnought detachment already grants them rerolls of 1 to hit.
Has anyone else had success with Infernus replacing Incursors?

I’m debating weather to go purge the foe or priority assets with DG for a RTT next month
If I do purge I’m doing virulent vectorum with Morty,LOC+DST,DP with RR,10 PM+biologus+plauge caster in a rhino, defiler, 10 blight lord termies with either tall man or 10 poxwalekrs not sure which yet and feels very pressurized but SUPER anemic stat check
And
If I do priority I was gonna maybe try something with tallyband and paragons of putrescence maybe? Haven’t made a list for it yet
But I really want to use Morty and withe the drops to blight Lord temries I have been wanting to use them too also with this my first try at death guard I’ve had the army for a bit but never played them out of favoring other armies ATM but feel like busting them out right now

I've been watching some of Art of Wars videos and they keep mentioning how Precision is a damage buff in 11th, but I fail to see how this is the case when it functionally works the same as in 10th?
The only thing it does is make the character group of your choice be the first allocation group, right? Your opponent is still making the saves with the character's save characteristic, so it's not like you're doing anything cheeky like making your opponent do a worse saving throw but take the damage on the character.
I'm just failing to see why they keep saying its a damage buff and it makes killing your opponent's units easier.

Where I go for tournament, my local place does 30 minutes deployment / rules discussion. And then 2.5 hr chess clocks with 75 minutes each.
That's 15 minutes per turn.
I'm probably just not good enough yet, but I am yet to finish a game after multiple RTTs with 15 mins per turn. I don't even see how that's possible unless you're like playing knights or somehing. .
Not complaining, if this the standard that's what it is. And I also understand stores need to fit games in and close etc.
For me personally I'd rather play 4 games over 2 days than 3 games in 1.
I am struggling to enjoy the game when I literally have to not speak to my opponent and just rattle through my turns as fast as humanely possible as if i am just repeating pre determined moves rather than playing the and reacting.
What's everyone else's experience?
Edit: to clarify, my store does not allow to start early if you deploy fast. You must wait until TOs signal the chess clocks start with 2.5 hrs. I never asked why, but I think their logic is to prevent people skipping rules discussions etc.
Edit 2: also savage with the downvotes. As someone new to tournament meta I was not complaining, moreso asking what the overall expectation was timewise. Jeez.

It seems like there are a lot of unexplored niches in defensive and offensive profiles across the game. Is there a math reason for this that I'm too smoothbrained to understand?
Why don't we see units with really high toughness but a low save characteristic? Or something with T 3 or 4 and a 2+ save and tons of wounds?
It feels like this would be a good way of diversifying the kinds of weapon profiles that we see in game. Right now you just bring as much damage 2 and 3 as possible because they punch best into elite profiles, but if we mixed up what elite could mean to different unit types and factions, that could complicate things in a good way.

While exploring factions, I found I really enjoy a few of the imperial agents units, namely the Assassins and the Adeptus Arbites units (vigilants, subductors and exaction squads). I dont really like the rest of imperial agents, and there doesn't seem to be enough to make any list worthwhile so I was seeing how they would go as allies. An army of Sisters and these Imperial Agents looks quite nice in my mind, but I am also looking to play and can't tell if they'd be worthwhile running at all.
Basically, I think they'd look cool together on the board, and I just want to make sure they're not a throw pick. A mid team is okay for me

I've been playing 40k for a few months now (~1-2 games a week), and I'm looking for ways to improve at the game during the week when I don't have 3 straight h of time to play a game.
Obviously, playing actual games is the best way to learn, but I'm wondering what I can do outside of games to improve my decision-making and overall understanding of competitive 40k.
I'm looking for resources or exercises that help you practice specific aspects of the game, such as:
I'm interested in practical resources I can use to actively practice these things, rather than just general advice to watch battle reports or play more games. For example specific YouTube channels that explain the reasoning behind competitive players' decisions, rather than just showing battle reports, websites with guides for different terrain layouts, deployment strategies, or lines of sight on the different maps, tools or exercises that let you simulate deployments or just places for learning advanced competitive concepts that aren't immediately obvious to newer players.
I play Thousand Sons, so faction-specific resources are welcome too, but I'm mainly interested in improving my fundamentals and overall game knowledge.
TLDR: Basically, if you wanted to get better at competitive 40k during the week without being able to play actual games, what would you do, and what resources would you recommend?
Edit: Just edited the games per week because I was getting a lot of comments about it. I did play A LOT during summer holidays, and that's why the average I posted was so high, but this past month post-holidays I can no longer play that much and I'm puilling 1-2 games a week, that's why I was asking for help. My bad for just posting an average that is not the true reality of where I am right now.

Genuine question for the the Space Marine players, especially now the new codex is out. For context, I’m coming at this as an Imperial Fists player, so I’m well aware I'm pretty biased in this but still...
Right now Company Heroes can only be led by Captains in Tacticus Armour, plus Calgar, who can attach to almost anything. Every other Chapter’s Epic Hero is locked out unless they happen to be in Tacticus.
Look at where that leaves a few of the Epic Heroes:
So my question is: if characters like Tor Garadon or Lysander could lead Company Heroes, would that actually be a problem? My thinking is that it wouldn’t be and you’d be giving the Epic Hero Captains one additional unit instead of their usual options.
I think it would give the non-Ultramarines named characters a decent, flexible bodyguard option that doesn’t depend on what armour they’re wearing. Right now that’s basically a Calgar-only perk.
That’s exactly why I’d like some outside opinions. Is there a combo I’m missing that would make this broken or OP? A specific detachment rule, a stratagem, or a character ability that gets silly once it’s on Company Heroes?

I kind of like the Daemon Prince, but I would like to try a list that doesnt use Mortarion, Defilers or daemons like Rotigus or the Great Unclean One. Maybe using some other vehicles or a different strategy?

I’m having trouble tryna fill out my DG list and wanted some tips about how the army works from the other DG players, things I’m worried about are afflicting enemies since the plague caster and deathshroud care about it a lot and wondering what else I should flesh out the army with to help the DP get its lone op. There is no warlord because I was gonna run Morty but he is expensive and on the fence about it. I’m considering taking DG to a RTT next month I been trying to work out CSM but they feel too underpowered rn against most things. Also my plan is to have the blight lords and death shroud in reserves with the plague marines in the rhino.

What are some units that are perfect for holding the expansion? One thing Im typically finding in my games is I almost always misjudge what I should use to hold my expansion no matter what army but it’s even more apparent in CSM because either its a cheap unit that dies or a shooting piece that gets charged and dies or it feels to important to just leave there all game. I’m wondering what everyone else has found success with? I was thinking beasts of nurgle maybe a 2 man I know it’s expensive but I seen a dude park a wraith brick with technomancer they’re before so I feel like 2 beasts is pretty good maybe some nurglings to move block too since im going have them anyway
r/WarhammerCompetitive • u/Impboy83 • 11h ago
Played a few battles with the new Marines and they play weird. The extra thoughness doesnt seem to matter much, they die just as fast as before. Lack of ignore cover makes them hit on 4+ on average. Played a game vs orks and they even shoot more and better then marines...orks shoot better then marines, how weird is that.
Im still looking for tactics that work, but overal Marines feel pretty weak. Im a missing someting? There are some strong combos, but cost alot of points. And when you fail to kill something the unit always dies in return.

We had a question regarding it and the answer seems… weird.
Per the dev wound rule, it by pass the attack allocation phase and becomes mortals wound. Most if not all of the damage modification ability (c’tan, Avatar of Khaine, Rogal Dorn) needs an attack to be allocated to the model….
So, is dev wound effectively ignore these rules?
