Custodes are one of the better purge armies but purge is not the strangest disposition as it gives good opponents a lot of power to deny points

Issue is that to beat Custodes you need to practice trading. Their units are very expensive and a good player will not let you approach for free. You need to slap chaff down to bait them in if you want any hope of winning. So you will basically be handing them free kills for the first few turns of each game.

But if they have to trade their 300 point unit for your 45 points chaff unit you trade wayyyyy up? There are a chunk of missions into purge where you don't really need to approach them. You can do your primary in your own half of the board and just wait for them to come to you

Yes, that's my point. That trading is too valuable against Custodes to rely on denying points.

But you can do both things? There are a chunk of missions where you can just not really put anything forward for a turn or 2 and you will just naturally outscore them on primary if they arent getting kills.

If they push you can potentially trade way up on points.

Purge Stodes seems to be really on the stodes player to both know when to push and to get the most out of their units

I think you mean "you can do either things" not both. You can't trade into your opponent and deny them kills

That's a fair point, but I don't know that the distinction really matters because you are handing them the choice in a lot of situations. In several missions they'll have to pick between the two and either one is an advantage for you unless they can trade correctly/pick off a unit for free.

This is why the Alarus captain is better than people seem to think, they don't read the last segment. The Alarus captain threatens almost the entire table.

If youre running an Allarus captain wouldnt you just be running Lions of the Emperor anyway?

3

u/Sorkrates 9h ago

yes, but the Allarus captain gives you T1 ingress with his unit, effectively. Since the previous post was about how you want to get in and kill early, that's a tool for doing it.

And if you're opponent knows that (they will probably ask if you have T1 ingress option prior to game start), they simply just screen, and the rule on his datasheet is meaningless.

3

u/OrwellTheInfinite 6h ago

No? Because your deployment and movement is directly impacted by denying the ingress move.

3

u/LoganGrimnard 5h ago

The more you control your opponents actions the easier it is to win and the rule on the datasheet means that your opponent is never safe and no objective is beyond your reach the amount of pressure it generates is insane.

Obviously as a good player you'd warn your opponent regardless of if they ask. That doesn't change the value of the ability.  If nothing else it forces them to spread their screens and/or maneuver differently to account for the threat.  Getting in your opponent's decision cycle like that is very valuable.

Maybe, I certainly am, but that doesn't mean teleporting across the table T1 isn't powerful in every detachment.

I always feel like turn 1 ingress sounds better than it is.

I don't understand this sentiment though. According to listhammer Purge is the second highest winningest disposition over the past four weeks. Two of the top four lists at BFS this weekend were Purge, and another went 6-0 at another 100 person GT.

I keep hearing the pundits regurgitate that Purge is weaker, but it's consistently done fine, if not better then fine.

Felt like the lull in purge wins were due to purge being tacked onto shit detachments in the dispo shuffle in the first dataslate. Now codex factions have access to pretty splashable 1dp purge detach, we're gonna see a surge of them

a surge of purge

"Surge in Urge To Purge" That SoB meme.

Pretty sure purge didn’t turn out to be the easy win people expected as the scoring is quite opponent reliant, ironically if Custodes are popular Purge might be quite bad as guaranteeing a unit dies won’t be easy at all

u/FuzzBuket 13h ago

Yep, custodes v custodes purge mirror is genuinely a slog, aside from potentially aquillions/telemon/or trajan your units don't easily kill other custodes units, especially if they get aoc or -1 to hit up.

Into -1 to hit a guard squad kills a guard and a half if both are on objectives

I'm more worried about T&H

6

u/Dorksim 14h ago

At this point in time I cant see how youd build a competitive list without being tempted to bring the Dreads. T&H on Mirotoi slots in fantastically.

I think T&H is going to be Custodes' best disposition. Especially with the detachment that gives everyone Fights First. It lets you stage on your points before opponent's go-turn and then when they go on their go-turn you're getting to swing back during Fights First instead of having to tank all their charges. That'll temper a lot of players' aggression.

9

u/DailyAvinan 14h ago

Folger says it is the only disposition, do not play anything else.

3

u/Weekly_Interview_936 14h ago

The only other one I could see actually working is going to be Priority.

Recon basically requires disposable position/action monkeys, ideally with deep strike. Which Custodes don't have. Purge needs more kill power than I think Custodes can reliably provide since having to wipe whole units to get points is harder than it looks. And disruption just sucks for everyone.

But T&H and Priority both need solid walls on which the opponent breaks themselves and that is what Custodes are built to be.

u/ErasmosNA 10h ago

Fundamentally i think youre viewing this army incorrectly. Fights first is only strong if your opponent willingly charges multiple units at the same time. Custodes dont even have enough volume of units where you dont want to commit a number of units to 1 model/unit.

If youre going Emissaries youre also giving up all the other shield hosts of which most are better specifically because fights first isnt great.

Custodes are fast enough to be able to alpha strike turn 1 in solar watch. You can get better defensive strats and utility out of emperors chosen. Sitting there and letting your opponent choose how they want to hit you rather than forcing them into a choice is just inefficient.

u/Weekly_Interview_936 10h ago

The idea of this play is to force your opponent to slow down their strategy while you sit on objectives and rack up primary points. The benefit of FF here is that it interrupts the "go turn" concept by making a melee opponent have to rethink whether they want to actually go all-in and do all their charges and lose the charge benefit for every charging unit after the first.

While Custodes probably do have T1 unga-bunga range, I also all but guarantee that unless you actually effectively table your opponent T1 that you'll lose on score a quite badly if you go full-unga-bunga. You're not likely to wipe units for scoring on Purge and you're out of position for scoring most other dispositions' missions. Plus you're bogged down in melee and going to get counter-charged since your in range of the enemy's entire army.

2

u/Xathrax 9h ago

While I agree with most of your points I would say Solar cannot alpha strike turn 1 into anything of value outside of short deployments and terrible placement from your opponent.

-4

u/Eejcloud 9h ago

Ah I see what this is. Trying to tank the Custodes winrate so you can avoid nerfs.

6

u/FuzzBuket 13h ago

Morotoi being take and hold or EC being prio is the real sauce.

I still think purge is a trap for melee. Especially custodes. If you've got strats for AOC/-1 to wound/-1D you can shut down a melee activation and if you can deny them an activationand their primary? Thats something good opponents will exploit.

Obvs newstodes are fast and that makes PTF better than it was 3 months ago when it was just a huge trap for them. But if your opponent tries to deny you your still vulnerable to being starved of points.

Obvs the purge mirror is great if your army is half a dozen units tops, but your opponent can and will just gun for your sos.

T&H was always better, they felt so much better once they moved to it from purge. Purge is just not as good for a hyper elite army. Although with the movement increases it might play better then before

3

u/Ezeviel 13h ago

Please do play purge into my recon GSC, we'll tie on primary and i will kick your ass on secondaries
