40k News Warhammer 40K app 2.8.0 changelog (v981) - Adeptus Custodes codex, FAQ's and other changes

GW App update to 2.8.0

Hey all! It is once again time for another app update. Most of you noticed the MFM was updated with the new points, but we now also have the full AC codex drop for the app and a load of other changes.

According to my own, obviously bad (since I'm mostly a coder, not a pro player šŸ˜‚), opinion it is a ton of clean up for previous patch notes.

Worth mentions

First of all, the Callidus seems to have lost Precision on her shooting? Not sure why that is or if it was mentioned anywhere. No longer the character killer of old. She did receive Blast 2 on the Neural Shredder though.

[edit] I'm an idiot. Seems Torrent weapons can't have Precision. That was already in the core rules 🫣 [/edit]

All AP on Chaos stuff was changed to -1 instead of 1. Seems to be a chore update.

Belial can finally be attached to a Terminator Assault Squad.

BA Death Company Captain got hit hard with the nerf stick on its power fist. Went to 3 attacks on a 3+!

FAQ

There were a lot of changes to the FAQs, but I'm not sure if that was just because the AC ones got removed and others got shuffled around or not. So take a good peak at the Core Rules changelog on GDM to make sure!

40k Analysis What do you think is your faction's most useless Unit?

To the level that it almost never makes it into your lists, or seen others run them much except as a meme. Running a survey here, trying to find out whether other factions have these as well.

40k Tactica How to properly play Space Marine Scouts

With the new Space Marines codex out, I expected to see fewer Scouts in competitive tournament lists. However, it seems like almost every competitive list is still bringing 1 or 2 units.

I have tried running Scouts in a few games, but I feel like I'm not getting the most out of them.

I often hear people say they're used "for scoring secondaries," but is that really the whole story? I’d love some insight into their core strategy:

  • Deployment: Should I be using Infiltrate to place them near the center of the board early?
  • Board Control: Are they valuable as early-game move-blockers or screening units against enemy Deep Strikes/Scout moves? In case of avoiding deep strikes maybe they'd need to be closer to home?
  • Repositioning: How do you effectively use them during the battle?

40k Discussion What do you do with 10 man assualt hammernators as a mele army?

Playing a mele dark angels - Lion, icc, deathwing knights. Seems obvious that my skirmish units should screen against nators ingress. By math they seem to one tap most of my hammers and anvils, meanwhile I kills mostly half the squad. Should I just avoid them and screen with chaf while lion deals with other parts of the opponent army? -1 damage stray also seems to bother me.

40k List First few bricks to get as a new Space Marine player?

I got some great advice yesterday about how to change my Space Marine collection into a more viable list for competing. Basically, I have no bricks. I only have minimum squad counts of a lot of units.

I am leaning towards detachments like Assault or Devastator Brethren, Tacitus Attack Force, and Ironstorm Spearhead. This means I'd prefer Tacitus units, no agressors or heavy intercessor bricks.

I have a Repulsor and a Repulsor Executioner as my only transports right now.

So which of the following below would you recommend? I already have half of these squads already.

Bladeguard Veterans: I think this is the obvious first choice, I have a chaplain or a lieutenant to lead them.

Hellblasters: A box of 10 to form a brick around a lieutenant might be fun. Plus, I could see it being fun to run 2 squads of these, 1 x5 and 1 x10.

Sternguard Veterans: Because their datasheet changed so much, this one is a bit variable.

Jump Pack Intercessors: I've read conflicting things about a brick of these guys. I think it would be cool, as I loved painting them. But I also don't currently have a jump pack character, which I want a captain for the cool factor and I like their ability for movement buffs.

Thank you!

40k Discussion Incursors vs. Infernus (Reroll 1's 18" vs. +1 BS 12")

I'm having a hard time evaluating these two.
I usually run a heavy dreadnought Iron Hands list and losing the +1 to hit on techmarines and incursors has hurt severely.

Wondering if Infernus Squads are the new Incusor flavour given that:
A) The majority of enemy units will be affected by cover (which Infernus strips)
B) Infernus has better shooting than Incursors overall
C) Negating cover (+1 to BS) is statistically better than rerolls of 1 provided by the Incursors

The only downside being that Infernus only has a range of 12".
On top of this, the Dreadnought detachment already grants them rerolls of 1 to hit.

Has anyone else had success with Infernus replacing Incursors?

40k Tactica Best disposition for DG

I’m debating weather to go purge the foe or priority assets with DG for a RTT next month

If I do purge I’m doing virulent vectorum with Morty,LOC+DST,DP with RR,10 PM+biologus+plauge caster in a rhino, defiler, 10 blight lord termies with either tall man or 10 poxwalekrs not sure which yet and feels very pressurized but SUPER anemic stat check

And

If I do priority I was gonna maybe try something with tallyband and paragons of putrescence maybe? Haven’t made a list for it yet

But I really want to use Morty and withe the drops to blight Lord temries I have been wanting to use them too also with this my first try at death guard I’ve had the army for a bit but never played them out of favoring other armies ATM but feel like busting them out right now

40k Analysis Can we admit the (post 415point price change) Lion panic has been overblown?

Edit: People are claiming that the response to Lion at 415 was not to think he was broken. This is objectively wrong. The top replies in the thread which announced his new price:

"Still incredible at 415. Just park him in the middle to cause all kinds of problems for the opponent that they cannot ignore"

"Probably still too strong of a datasheet but it's a step in the right direction"

"And is still worth itĀ "

"There's just legit no reason to give him a 3++."

"Good. He should be even higher."

https://www.reddit.com/r/WarhammerCompetitive/comments/1wmdkg1/lion_will_cost_415_according_to_gw_partner/

______________________________________________________________________________________________

I fully expect to get downvoted for this, and I 100% understand. The Lion is a frustrating model to interact with for many lists, and can create feels bad moments. Go ahead and downvote away if that applies to you.

However, it's pretty clear he's not OP Broken. DA managed a **45%** winrate and 0.7 overrep ast week with the new codex, and a big part of it is the Lion.

https://listhammer.info/?faction=Dark+Angels

Lion showed up in less than half of the X-1 lists. Generic SMs are at a 53% winrate, significantly better than DA's 45%.

While everyone was focusing on his wounds, toughness, and save, all non-DA players ignored the *massive* nerf that he recieved on his abilites. All of them trigger off of DARK ANGELS, not ADEPTUS ASTARTES. As there is no mechanism for genetic SM units to gain a divergent keyword, this means the Lion does nothing for the vast majority of the SM range, and also does not get Lone Op from them. If it's not in the DA supplement, they do nothing for the Lion and he does nothing for him.

Lion next to a Deathwing Terminator squad? Gives them the 5+++ (in of itself a meaningful nerf. I piloted Lion giving 4+++ to Dreadnoughts to multiple X-1 results), RR1s to hit and wound in melee, and gets Lone Op. Lion next to Assault Terminators? No dice, no benefit either way.

This is a severely underlooked aspect of the Lion. While he is an absolutely deadly option, he is a melee missile that does not give out benefits to the majority of the army in many builds, and can only realistically engage and kill one unit at a time. And he REALLY doesn't like the Terminator-equivalent meta where his effective damage is reduced significantly by 4++ and possibly -1 damage on Assault Terminators in Terminator Storm.

If the Lion was what people have wailed about, DA would not be sitting at a 45% tournament winrate after the codex. Generic SMs are 8% higher, and RG has nearly the same durability as the Lion (4++/5+++ is mathematically equal to 3++ into non-mortal damage, and even into mortal it's only a 5+++ bs 4+++), and his abilities are all keyed to ADEPTUS ASTARTES. This not only means he benefits all SM codex seclections, he even gives reroll 1s to hit and wound to DW (both shooting and assault). This is a massive improvement compared to the Lion. In fact, it's such a better phrasing that if you could legally do it, RG is objectively better for a DA list than their own Primarch.

So can we agree once again that online 40k discussion is always pure reflexive response, and that when we let things actually hit the table, they may not be what they seem? Plenty of people were arguing 2 points. 1. Lion would only be balanced at 450+ or 2. There was no point at which the Lion could be balaned. He would either be undercosted and broken or overcosted and worthless. Yet we *do* see the Lion make X-1 competitive lists. DA are just weak enough that it doesn't matter and the whole faction is back on the strugglebus, as is tradition. (The heights of Transhuman 9th and broken CoH+DFP are by far the exceptions for DA. They have spent much more time bottom 5 in 40k history than even top half).

Simply put, I would kill for the weaker, old 10th ed 265 Lion back, even tho he has 10W T9. He was cheap enough to use as a melee missile, without needing to maximize his auras (which applied to everything, and were thus wete easier to maximize). Now he is so expensive that you both need to build a list of purely DA supplement units (and generic infantry with DA characters attached) AND manage to get him into consistent combat while his army benefits from his aura. It's an incredibly thin line to walk and can be easily disrupted. Tournament results give a clear representation of where rhe faction struggles, and it's when an opponent forces them to abandon that game plan.

Edit 2: As I said in the comments, I will come back to the thread and eat crow to every single commenter if the Lion does not see a points reduction or keyword change on his abilities in the next dataslate. So if I'm wrong, you have that to look forward to.

For all rhe "only one week" responses, how long dis it take for the community to come to consensus that the Destrier was a middling model that was okay, and the Defiler was game warping? That was discussed literally after 1 week of results. Obv RG is not an OP problem akin to Defilers, but he is amazing while Lion is usable, but not seeing a lot of lists. And DA and SM comp players have had the rules and ppints for 3 weeks. The results this last week were the culmination of all the prep that they did before that. And in that prep, top tier comp players who are DA specialists or have won GTs/Majors with them moved off of eirher the Lion (see Tony Bennet's published DA list) or off the faction in general (John Lennon, who has crushed tournies with DA in the past, choosing yo go UM+RG over DA+Lion for his supermajor). Okay, last edit, but I'm just getting a lot of the same replies.

40k Analysis Marines are in a weird place

Played a few battles with the new Marines and they play weird. The extra thoughness doesnt seem to matter much, they die just as fast as before. Lack of ignore cover makes them hit on 4+ on average. Played a game vs orks and they even shoot more and better then marines...orks shoot better then marines, how weird is that.

Im still looking for tactics that work, but overal Marines feel pretty weak. Im a missing someting? There are some strong combos, but cost alot of points. And when you fail to kill something the unit always dies in return.
