40k News Warhammer 40K app 2.8.0 changelog (v981) - Adeptus Custodes codex, FAQ's and other changes

GW App update to 2.8.0

Hey all! It is once again time for another app update. Most of you noticed the MFM was updated with the new points, but we now also have the full AC codex drop for the app and a load of other changes.

According to my own, obviously bad (since I'm mostly a coder, not a pro player 😂), opinion it is a ton of clean up for previous patch notes.

Worth mentions

First of all, the Callidus seems to have lost Precision on her shooting? Not sure why that is or if it was mentioned anywhere. No longer the character killer of old. She did receive Blast 2 on the Neural Shredder though.

[edit] I'm an idiot. Seems Torrent weapons can't have Precision. That was already in the core rules đŸ«Ł [/edit]

All AP on Chaos stuff was changed to -1 instead of 1. Seems to be a chore update.

Belial can finally be attached to a Terminator Assault Squad.

BA Death Company Captain got hit hard with the nerf stick on its power fist. Went to 3 attacks on a 3+!

FAQ

There were a lot of changes to the FAQs, but I'm not sure if that was just because the AC ones got removed and others got shuffled around or not. So take a good peak at the Core Rules changelog on GDM to make sure!

a lot of these feels like it should be in the dataslate rather than a FAQ; no disembark->heroic, the evaluator and enhancments in transports are all pretty clear RAW, and this should really update their text rather than just be a FAQ.

going through the faction stuff theres a lot here that is just updates (or even changed points!) rather than just FAQs. Im glad GW does update stuff but it feels very haphazard

21

u/steak_and_icecream 17h ago

It does feel like having a FAQ is an anti pattern and if the original rule(s) isn't clear then they should be rewritten.

2

u/Rodot 2h ago

FAQs have a purpose but they should not contain rules. They should only answer a question that is clearly answerable by the rules, but one that is frequently asked either due to how common it is or difficulty connecting many rules together.

16

u/ItsSuperDefective 13h ago

I'm forever confused by what Games Workshop thinks belongs in an faq.

Half the time it's straight up adding rules that simply don't exist without the faq telling you so, and half the time it's "Rule X says Y, does that mean Y? Yes"

7

u/phoenixlrd 16h ago

It's not no disembark -> heroic, it's no rapid disembark to heroic. As far as i'm aware this only effects the Trukk which specifies that models make a rapid disembark move. (could be wrong if there's something new in the SM codex)

1

u/moremorelight 13h ago edited 12h ago

The Trukk is a bit of an outlier as it's an out of sequence disembark which specifies rapid disembark even if the transport didn't move, but I get the impression it's supposed to be a blanket "no charge of any type, including Heroic Intervention, if you disembarked from a transport which moved this turn". Would also apply to something like the Chimera with it's advance & disembark ability, but not a Land Raider where it's ability overrules this

Edit: Actually scratch that, the FAQ specifies "this turn". Maybe it is just the Trukk

5

u/alph4rius 15h ago

GW has called erratas FAQs since the days Ghaz was on a regular size base at least.

7

u/Weekly_Interview_936 15h ago

GW has long used FAQ as a synonym for patch. Same for "developer's commentary", for that matter.

2

u/Due_Wrangler9461 12h ago

Rapid disembark says you can't charge and the trukk forces to make a rapid disembark move so it sounds like it belongs to a FAQ.

The weird part is that the WE rhino does not specify the disembark mode so how does that work?

1

u/Foreign-Presence-679 11h ago

Why are transports so confusing

1

u/Rodot 2h ago

Because people want a way to charge out of them after they move which leaves a lot of different scenarios to cover if you don't want that to be a general rule.

65

u/Horus_is_the_GOAT 17h ago

Confirmed that CP generation for having XYZ as warlord relies on them being alive. RAI definitely won over RAW

23

u/Tracey_Gregory 15h ago

It was always RAW that you lose it. Warlord is a keyword tag applied during list building. The core rules are super clear that in order to benefit from any rules related to a keyword the model must be alive

14

u/ItsSuperDefective 13h ago

People seem to forget that Army Rules are still rules that models have, not necessarily just a blanket thing effecting the game.

1

u/PrimeInsanity 13h ago

True, the wiggle room was in reserves not dead iirc (not specifically for this rule but for another I'm forgetting)

5

u/Dense_Jellyfish3343 17h ago

Not seeing this, any hint on where it could be found?

5

u/Ravensbaine 16h ago

Core rules updates and errata

1

u/La_Maraviglia 10h ago

You run into some truly dumb rules arguments in this sub

Like the 9" coherency 'fire team' bs at the start of 11th

1

u/cop_pls 9h ago

Very important for the Supreme Commander "must be your Warlord" characters like primarchs and Ghaz, and it'll get more important as codices come out. Fumbling Ghaz and having him die on turn 3 loses you a chunk of CP generation. When Tau get their codex, sniping a Shadowsun on turn 2 could really mess up their plan.

49

u/sendaislacker 17h ago

Thanks.

It's bullshit that we have to rely on reddit for this stuff but again, thanks.

86

u/sto_brohammed 18h ago

Thankfully they made this once per battle day 1

30

u/Karmagator 18h ago

Not So Superior Creation XD

5

u/pieisnice9 15h ago

It should be once per battle but I'm a little sad it's nerfed from the current version. I also hate that all of these are on a 2+.

9

u/Slavasonic 18h ago

Unless you also run the character detachment which has a strat that lets you use once per battle abilities one addition time.

37

u/thejakkle 17h ago edited 16h ago

They actually avoided this! It's the same detachment but the stratagem only refreshes 'Once per game, per unit abilities'.
This (and Trajan's moment shackle) are 'once per game, per army' rules.

Edit: The stratagem also specifies Datasheet abilities so would never work on Superior Creation

14

u/Slavasonic 17h ago

Oh damn, I didn’t realize it didn’t work on trajans ability.

30

lol. So angry that people don’t encourage cheating.

14

u/AwTomorrow 17h ago

What? It says it applies to A, Trajann’s is B. If it meant B, it woulda said so.

18

u/Slavasonic 17h ago

Can you share the exact text without omitting anything?

8

u/DrakeIddon 16h ago

this is lifted from the leak text, its one per battle per unit datasheet abiloty so raw it indeed doesnt work on trajans ability as it stands

it also specifies datasheet ability so this will never work on enhancements

7

u/thejakkle 16h ago

Good catch on the datasheet abilities!

3

u/Slavasonic 16h ago

Oh yeah, good point.

9

u/RyanGUK 16h ago

For full visibility:

Trajanns text:

Moment Shackle (Once per battle, per army): At the start of the phase, etc etc.

The strat timing

When: any phase, when a friendly Custodes character model has used a (Once per battle, per unit) datasheet ability.

RAW, the strat doesn’t work on Trajann however best thing to do is email the GW FAQ email for confirmation if it was intended to work that way or not.

The dude you’re replying to doesn’t like that his interpretation is contradicted by the text he’s reading basically. 😅 But if the intention was for it to work, it’ll get corrected.

24

u/thejakkle 17h ago edited 16h ago

Tournaments are great because we play by the rules and leave bullshit interpretations at the door. In 6 years I've not had a rules issue at a tournament that wasn't solved by just checking the books with my opponent. I have had that when I've gone to clubs/LGS. If that makes us "sweaties" so be it, go and play your vibe hammer somewhere else

Edit: Can people lay off the personal attacks on people below please? They're being belligerent and rude, don't stoop to their level

Trajann’s rule says “once per battle, per army”

Strat says “once per battle, per unit”

You don’t just get to decide which parts of the rules apply and which parts don’t 😂 Even the Custodes sub have said it doesn’t work lmao!

12

u/Slavasonic 16h ago

That’s not what either rule says. You are lying.

Low IQ and bad hygiene are correlated. Since you cannot read properly I’d say you’re the one who needs deodorant :)

7

That one is only for datasheet abilities.

0

u/AncientPromotion7467 18h ago

Hahaha yeah I'm sad

-2

u/Weekly_Interview_936 15h ago

GW hates fun.

62

u/Tzare84 18h ago

Somewhere in the rules it says that Torrent weapons can not have precision, probably that's why Callidus was adjusted.

19

u/Ylar_ 18h ago

It’s okay though, they forgor there’s still an agents enhancement that gives flamers melta 1 and precision apparently

17

u/Throwaway02062004 17h ago

Gw: You’re taking an agents detachment? How many times do we have to teach you this lesson?

3

u/KindArgument4769 17h ago

But that isn't the only loadout that can take it. It also gives dev wounds and the most common choice (psychic Inquisitor) regularly has that as well. That doesn't make it incorrect.

1

u/Ylar_ 17h ago

It’s not the only option sure, but nobody ever takes the non flamer option because it’s bad

-6

u/sageshitachiwand 16h ago

geniunely who cares about agents

1

u/Ylar_ 16h ago

You must be fun at parties

11

u/Wiebbe 18h ago

Yeah.. That was pointed out in my local gaming community as well. That highlights the "I'm a noob" section of the post even more 😂

I would never play this wrong myself đŸ«Ł

1

u/steak_and_icecream 13h ago

Obviously, it's rule 24.37.01.

35

u/irlchrusty 18h ago

Thanks for doing these, it's genuinely very helpful.

27

u/sto_brohammed 18h ago

It's really kinda silly that GW doesn't publish their own changelog like this. It's not like people memorize all of the rules and then read through every single one of them every update to compare.

7

u/Ordinary__Man 15h ago

It's doubly concerning because if they can't publish a changelog document, it brings into question how poorly maintained their internal documents are since it's a plug in place doc with no downsides.

25

u/Smiling_Tom 18h ago

Captain in phobos got his carbine profile fixed to match that in the book (Assault, precission, rapid fire 1)

4

u/Another_Guy_In_Ohio 17h ago

But they didn’t fix the Lt. facepalm

1

u/mezdiguida 15h ago

Same for Cato Sicarius and his sword profiles.

11

u/AuxiliaryTimeCop 17h ago

GK Purgation squad no longer hitting on 2s with storm bolters. But that was probably just correcting an error.

11

u/Seth_laVox 18h ago

Death company captain thing is worse,  as he is otherwise still on the same weapons as a blood angels captain, with +1A. Except he's worse at power fisting?

16

u/Nassuman 16h ago

I have no idea what GW is thinking when it comes to Blood Angels.

7

u/toepherallan 16h ago

They are clearly too powerful, nerf them and ramp up Calgar and Guillimans power!

11

u/Nassuman 16h ago

"Another 65 points added to Mephiston!"

5

u/Lawrence_s 17h ago

He had this same bug when the Marine Codex dropped. It was fixed and is now unfixed.

App only rules is a mistake.

2

u/Imaginary-History-30 13h ago

Its only really bad because they keep half-assing these changes and so far before launch almost every book has had an errata before its launch. it really shouldn't be this hard to have a decent change log with your app

1

u/vashoom 14h ago

Is this kind of thing way worse this edition that before? I swear, every week there are bugs and errors and updates that half fix things but break other things.

2

u/Ski-Gloves 13h ago

I think it's worse than before, but it's hard to tell whether it's different or we're just being forced to see it more.

1

u/Lawrence_s 12h ago

I think the app has always had problems.

But previously the source of rules would be the Codex and then any changes in the faction pack. The app was almost unofficial.

Now the app is the only source of rules for some factions and it's full of stupid errors is a problem.

9

u/Npf6 9h ago

I think I want to surface the bigger issue here. This is a massive update.

I'm an event TO and we normally lock rules changes about 1 week before list submission to make a consistent playing field for folks to use the models they have in their collection. This clearly isn't going to work anymore so I'm not going to bother with a rules cut off that isn't later than the Friday before list submission.

But the quality of life changes in this pack are high enough to warrant that being overturned.

Games Workshop listen to me; just set a date for rules and FAQ releases. Just tell me which days they are going to happen on so I can account for it in my event packs. Please.

8

u/Fun-Mongoose4282 17h ago

They half fixed the watch master for agents, still references doctrines though

5

u/Toastman0218 15h ago

Watch Master for DW still has the wrong rules.

8

u/C4790M 17h ago

Huh decimus kill team gained the gravis and tacticus keyword but not the Phobos keyword despite there being a Phobos guy in there. They also gave him the tacticus +1 toughness but no movement buff so I’m not surprised they forgot

So no shoot and remain hidden in Phobos shadow force, but you can give the unit transhuman in gravis siege force or +1 to hit in shooting in line breaker which seems like a nice force multiplier

2

u/Rollingplasma4 17h ago

They didn't have phobos keyword last edition. So I am not surprised.

1

u/whydoyouonlylie 17h ago

Take 2 Decimus Kill Teams with DW Support and Tacticus Firestorm and Gravis Linebreaker. Get Rapid Fire on the 2 Gravis models and also +1 to hit natively on all the Tacticus models. You also get access to the charge mortals on 3+ on the whole unit from the Gravis stratagems despite only having 2 Gravis models. Probably not gamebreaking but very silly.

6

u/Daemos_Cyphus 17h ago

Windriders ost are now able to ingress turn one and same for seer council stratagem. That is nice

3

u/Avenflar 17h ago

The Sudden Strike maneuver got nerfed by being limited to the end of charge phase, though : /

8

u/sageshitachiwand 16h ago

it straight up didn't work before, seeing as its trigger was after pile ins

1

u/Daemos_Cyphus 17h ago

I will take the trade anyway. Been able to start attrition T1 is huge for Windhost. And it's not like our melee was oppressif because of the sudden strike...

1

u/Dan185818 13h ago

It's good they clarified that, because while many tournaments ruled that wording didn't allow t1 ingress, they were reading the rule wrong. It's good that GW cleared it up. Obviously play by the TO interpretation during the tournament, but now they'll hopefully fix it

1

u/Daemos_Cyphus 11h ago

And WTC was ruling the don't. And in my area it's WTC ruling thzt apply to all tournament. So yeah, glade they did FAQ this.

1

u/Dan185818 10h ago

Yeah, that was the big one, but I have seen others take their lead from them.

20

u/giuseppe443 17h ago

damn GW not making the callidus weapon the exception to precision + torrent rule is sad

8

u/moremorelight 17h ago

True, D6 + blast 2 torrent attacks with anti infantry 2+ and ap -2 is fun though!

5

u/giuseppe443 17h ago

its more about the character and its lore.

4

u/Capable_Warthog7884 15h ago

It still has a precision melee weapon

3

u/ashortfallofgravitas 18h ago

Callidus lost precision because torrent weapons cannot have precision in 11e

4

u/Sly_Guy77 15h ago

Couple other bugs got squished I was happy to see. EC Tormentors now no longer get flagged as having the wrong wargear selection no matter what they have selected, Lord Exultant in app was updated to T5. Over in Iron Hands land, they fixed that Caanok Vaar can now attach to terminator squads and is no longer just locked to terminator assault squads.

3

u/Aggressive_Price_177 17h ago

Does someone else spotted damage reductions now affecting dev wounds? I can't find it and someone on discord said

8

u/Colmarr 17h ago

It depends when the reduction occurs. If reduction is at wound allocation, it doesn’t apply because dev wounds end the attack sequence before you get to the allocation step. If the reduction happens earlier (there are some that apply when the target is declared IIRC) then the reduction works.

1

u/Aggressive_Price_177 16h ago

"each time an attack is allocated to this model..." would work?

5

u/Colmarr 16h ago

Nope. When an attack inflicts dev wounds, the attack sequence ends after the wound roll. As allocation only happens after the save roll, the damage reduction never activates.

2

u/Scenesfrommymemory 10h ago

An attack is allocated to the model at the point of selecting the target. Wound allocation and attack allocation are not the same

1

u/Colmarr 8h ago edited 7h ago

Not true.

An attack is targeted at a unit (04.02). There is no allocation to a model until you are in the save step (05.03)

Magnus the Red’s Impossible Form would work against dev wounds because it applies when the attack is made, not when it is allocated.

“Impossible Form (Psychic): Each time an attack is made against this PSYKER (excluding Psychic Attacks), subtract 1 from the Damage characteristic of that attack.”

2

u/PrimeInsanity 13h ago

I have heard that being someone TOs have been told for tournaments but never in text

3

u/Catmantus 16h ago

Saw this at the bottom of the 14th October update.

1

u/Wiebbe 16h ago

So is the Tank Shock stratagem update. This section is ordered on when they were added (newest to oldest), so the change to the consolidation was part of a very early update (931).

1

u/AMA5564 15h ago

Is this a change?

3

u/Vitev008 13h ago

Hooray, you can search "move" again without the app crashing

1

u/Wiebbe 12h ago

Amazing! I forgot about that bug 🎉

2

u/Icy-Context5774 18h ago

Thank you

2

u/Tomaskraven 12h ago

I don't understand some of these changes... Are they from todays update or from previous updates too?

For example, Logan's Storm Bolter BS was already 2+ before today.

1

u/Wiebbe 10h ago

The errata was published today, but the app data already had BS 2+ since the 2 October update. The errata just makes the earlier fix official. The errata section lists errata published in this update; it does not mean every listed stat changed today.

That is why it is in a separate section and not under Logan himself.

2

u/Halcyon_Paints 7h ago

Did they fix the aggressor shooting problem?

2

u/Paradise_2142 15h ago edited 15h ago

Kayvaan Shrike still doesn't have epic hero lol

Edit: they at least fixed an issue that was made in the last patch where caanok var couldnt lead terminators

2

u/Paradise_2142 12h ago

Edit 2: shrike got epic hero added through the faction pack update

1

u/Harbinger_X 18h ago

Thank you for doing the Lord's work here.

1

u/coggdawg 10h ago

Were there any points changes from what the reviews were listing?

1

u/GolgariDethCreap 5h ago

So for Dark Angels, the Land Speeder Vengeance could take the Nightforged Battery three times pre codex. After codex, it was flagged as an error with a max of one, but was misspelled "upgarde", so folks thought it was a coding error.

The spelling has been fixed, and still shows a max of one... are we to believe this is actual factual now?

1

u/Past-Match1011 4h ago

Seen there is an update, then notice nothing has changed for guard so go back to not caring

1

u/Foster-40 1h ago

Sisters Penitent Host can now use the vows (aka "Holy Waagh") in their own command phase instead of start of the Battle Round. Thats a pretty big one. Triumph wording for auto 6 has been fixed, exorcists got cheaper (!?)

1

u/AMA5564 15h ago

Always appreciate the mining work!

-5

u/Haunter232 17h ago

Can someone explain to me why Lysander gets to keep his flat -1 to hit

12

u/sageshitachiwand 16h ago

because he's competing with the likes of Lion and Gueberto for the chapter slot

4

u/ShakespeareStillKing 14h ago

Gueberto is a peak name.

Btw, Lysander isn't even the chapter master. Nor is mr Garadon. They're like, company captains or something.

4

u/Haunter232 13h ago

So you’re telling me that every other -1 to hit unit in the game loses their -1 to hit but some yellow terminators get to be -2 to hit in cover just because the yellow space marine player’s OP space marine rules aren’t as good as the blue or green space marine player’s rules

2

u/c0horst 11h ago

.... Yes.

3

u/JKevill 17h ago

Cause he’s real expensive

2

u/Elegant_Work_5413 15h ago

bro is one of the most expensive characters marines have and that's his only unit buff.

1

u/Zanan_ 17h ago

Valraks the CEO /s

-13

u/WalkRealistic9220 15h ago

SM should have been emergency fixed. Now we have 3 months of suffering

11th has been a massive disappointment so far

14

u/Novel_Yesterday3309 15h ago

They don't need an emergency fix. They're not breaking the game or anything as far as I can tell.

5

u/Vegetable_Spray_756 13h ago

Deathwatch terminators probably need some kind of stepper for taking them outside of deathwatch. They’re kind of disgusting atm.

1

u/Laruae 4h ago

They shouldn't be getting 3 guns without taking the full 10 man.

-12

u/WalkRealistic9220 15h ago

Because they are fighting other space marines. Played well they do literally everything better than everyone. I know they want to boost sales with the new codex but that should not be how balancing is done at all
