Hated Tropes An adaptation completely botches the original theme and message
Mulan(2020)-They give Mulan superpowers which is not only lame it goes against the message of the original about equality and struggle, plus they removes Shang because apparently having Mulan date her superior was "problematic" even though Shang genuienely respected Mulan and their rank was never brought up
I am Legend(2007)-You know why the story is called "I am legend"? SPOILER ALERT the protagonist is the actual monster, humanity is gone and the vampires have a actual society and the protagonist kills and terrorize them
Animal Farm(2026)-On the very slim chance that Andy Serkis ever sees this, here's the thing Andy,Animal Farm was not a children work it was not supposed to have a happy ending, you never heard of cautionary tales before?

Mind you, all of the changes to Mulan 2020 were meant to specifically pander to China, which is ironic because China ended up fucking hating this movie.

I’ve listened to multiple retellings of the original Mulan stories and I have no idea why they made those decisions. All they had to do is take the Disney Mulan and change it so she has more of an active combat role, and beat the enemy general in single combat like she does in one of the original stories. Not add in some magic chosen one bs.

u/Win-level 8d ago
My theory is that Disney wanted Mulan to be seen as a personification of China and that meant they could not have her had any flaws, because that would mean that China has flaws and the Chinese government does not like that, so Disney then made a person that was always perfect, super powerful and that just needs to "believe in herself " to do anything that way they could do some pandering, but to the detriment of the story.

In one of my favourite retellings she doesn’t have many flaws and it works great. She’s hard working, talented, disciplined and loyal. She does almost everything right. She steps in to save her father, goes off to war, rises through the ranks, leads the assault on the rebel general, bests him in single combat then quietly retires.
The live action version makes it a journey of self discovery, owning her femininity and claiming her destiny and screwing what anyone else thinks of her. But she’s a character defined by what other people think of her. She goes to war out of duty, and it is a sacrifice. She knows who she is, and has to endure it so eventually she’s allowed to retire and finally be herself.

I mean that's often what happens when people not in the group try and pander to a group. They fail miserably at the attempt and it becomes insulting.
Another example: Miles Morales Thor. Basically did a "if Miles was Thor and everyone was black it would basically look like Harlem." A Hispanic creator was responsible. Black comic fans were not impressed.

I almost thought sticking to the more "realistic" ending was ballsy, but then of course they decide to end it with Nani being able to use Pleakly's portal gun thing to visit in person whenever she wants anyway. So none of it matters, I guess.
Also, fuck Disney for being cowards and not letting Pleakly crossdress.
→ More replies (5)49
u/grendus 7d ago
The irony is they still could have used the portal gun, just in reverse.
Have Nani be using the portal gun to commute to school. Do a slow pan through the house with David seeing Nani off to school, Jumba helping Lilo with a school project (and Pleakly freaking out about him including some comedic sci-fi element), Stitch teaching tricks to the neighborhood dogs or some other sight gag, and you're golden. Nani is able to go to school now because she's not alone trying to raise her sister, but she's still there for Lilo, not just visiting regularly but together as family.
The moral is still that Nani shouldn't have had to give up her future to take care of her sister, but it doesn't forget that Ohana means family... not just the family that you're born with, but the family you make.

Like, what the hell is Disney trying to do with these live action “adaptations” that are nothing like the original story they’re based on?
Now, I’ll admit that the Jungle Book adaptation was actually a decent movie, and I’ve heard mixed reviews about the Lion King movies, but, as you said, they COMPLETELY butchered everything Lilo and Stitch represents to make a new version of the original(and extremely well made) movie that got so popular it not only got a semi-successful cartoon series, a sequel film AND a prequel film, but it also got a friggin anime. Like, why? What do you have to gain by damaging your own work with a message you can’t seriously think people are going to accept?
And this is the first I’m hearing of Mulan getting friggin super powers(all I knew about that movie before hand was that Mushu got cut out).
Don’t know much about the The Little Mermaid or Snow White remakes, but everything I’ve heard about them suggests they were straight up awful.

Why did they decide to make animal farm a kids movie? When I think of Orwell, "kid friendly" isn't exactly the 1st thing that comes to mind.
You're allowed to make media featuring anthropomorphic animals that isn’t explicitly for children, I promise. We aren't doing to draw and quarter you out in the street for being a furry
412
u/StillShmoney 8d ago
It comes down to the tragic fact that animation is simply not respected as an art form. A lot of studio execs simply see animation as a medium for children. This leads to nonsense like the terrible marketing for Transformers One.

The irony then that it was made by Andy Serkis, who built his entire career on demanding respect for animation and motion capture performances.
94
u/StillShmoney 8d ago
I think there’s a cognitive dissonance when it comes to cgi vs animation. The lion king remake is a perfect example of this. It’s more or less presented as a live action remake, however it’s so heavy on the cgi that it’s effectively still an animated film just made in a different style of animation. Something about the photo realism (or at least the attempt of it) comes off as being above animation even if it’s effectively the same thing.

Betty from Rugrats.
In the more recent series, they turned her into a lesbian simply because she is big and masculine, thereby discarding the show's original message: she was married to Howard (a smaller, more nervous man), and while they had reversed gender roles, it didn't matter—they were a happy family.

There was also a funny bit of dichotomy between Betty and Charlotte (Angelica's mother).
Betty is a classic power feminist. She takes charge in her house, she's big and loud and athletic, she marches for the cause, and she...doesn't do a whole lot. She works at a coffee shop. Her parenting is...questionable at the best of times, though she does love the twins more than anything, she fawns over them and excuses concerning behavior (granted, they ARE babies).
Charlotte, by comparison, is a businesswoman. She's strong-willed, career-driven, and happens to be the CEO of Mega Corp. She's also a total badass. Of course, you'd imagine a woman in her position would struggle to make time for her family, and you wouldn't be totally wrong. She's got a lot of responsibility to juggle. However, compared to Betty and even her own husband, Charlotte is an incredible parent when Angelica has her attention. In fact, she may be the only adult in the show who consistently corrects Angelica's behavior, and in a very nurturing way at that.

Yeah but she is at every neighborhood and family event in person. She may be on call for work but she is there and doesn't push her daughter away for it. There's even times like in the first movie where she is hanging at the cookout and trying to be friends with the other adults.

u/Anita_Hero838 8d ago
She does spend most of her time doing business on the phone, but when she does parent its top notch

Netflix Devil May Cry
There’s a consistent theme throughout the games that while demons are inherently evil, theyre able to grow, change, and develop compassion and emotion through the experience of human compassion, hence the title “DEVIL MAY CRY.”
In Netflix DMC, not only are humans distinctly related to demons, but are called “Makaiins” (which in Japanese is related to the underworld) and used as an allegory for genocide.

Worst part for me was how unfunny Dante
As soon as that clip of Dante’s “pretend I shot those guys” I just knew this was gonna be abysmal ass cheeks
Dante makes stupid jokes that don’t make sense plenty of times, but he doesn’t care because he can back up his trash talk anyways while being charismatic and cool about it. Nante’s based on TikTok attention span’s version of a badass
34
u/neroselene 8d ago
Initially when the series was first revealed I was under the impression that this was Dante pre-DMC 3 (aka. Tony Redgrave) given the White Rabbit and lack of Ebony and Ivory. So, I was willing to faintly give him benefit of the doubt as it being at his most inexperienced. But, well...it just got worse as time went on.
Thing is though, the series itself is kinda weird as it feels like it tried to merge Pre-DMC 3 dante with DMC 3 Dante in terms of his development for some reason which is probably why Dante feels so inconsistent.

His tantrum over DMC5’s announcement is hilarious; a grown man throwing a fit like a little, spoiled child all because he didn’t get the attention he wanted is both insanely hilarious and ridiculously embarrassing. It’s not like the game wasn’t known prior to 2018, Dan Southworth accidentally leaked the game back in like 2015 at a con, I believe. So the game had been known for quite a while, but Shankar still threw a fit over it because his narcissism wasn’t satisfied LOL.

If I want to sit down and watch something reasonably entertaining, or have something on in the background while I'm working out or doing meal prep, it's great. The characters feel compelling, the world is fleshed out. It's fine.

Aladdin’s remake absolutely bothers me for a similar reason. We’ll consider the Disney Aladdin the “original” here, even though I know it’s technically an adaptation as well.
Aladdin is supposed to be the hero, and he’s on a Hero’s Journey. At the very end of the animated film, it is Aladdin the Street Rat who wins. He is stripped of everything he thought made him worthwhile and won with his own two hands, his own skill, his own abilities. No genie. He outsmarts a literal sorcerer by himself. Abu is turned into a toy; Carpet is turned into thread. Genie is incapable of helping. Aladdin is ALONE. Jafar even says “Without the Genie, boy, you are NOTHING.”
The live action remake took ALL of that away from him. The ending gave the win to literally everyone else. Aladdin just sort of stands around while Jasmine has a badass fight and then Genie beats Jafar by himself. Aladdin doesn’t even get a chance to prove that he was worthwhile the whole time. They wanted Jasmine to be a Girl Boss so bad when she was freaking awesome in the animated film by herself. Girl was resourceful and smart and cool.

There were only three things in the movie, that I liked:
- Will Smith didn't tried to imitate Robin Williams and made his own Genie.
- The Sultan made the impression of being at least some kind of ruler and not the totally naive man-child that he was in the animation.
- Jasmine seemed to be a good educated princess, who knows the surrounding kingdoms and called Aladdin's bluff with his fake kingdom after she studied some maps. It needed the intervention of the Genie, that his bluff didn't blow up.

I have not seen the new Animal Farm, and I'm not excusing what this one did, but none of the adaptations have ever gotten the ending right. Every single one ends in an uprising. The book just ends on a dark, somber note that this is how things are now.
Would love an adaptation with the OG ending.

Too many of these stories in a dystopian setting tty to end the thing on a "happy" note after an uprising and it just feels so lame every time.
I feel like 1984 has the best twist on this idea: let you believe the main character stumbled upon the underground resistance, only to tell you at the very end that it was all a carefully orchestrated illlusion to "course correct" the main character into total submission. There's no hope; once freedom has been completely taken away from the individual it's too late to change anything.
Way more impactful than "good guy found other good guys hiding and he's JUST who they've been waiting for to bring down an entire system built on subjugating the masses.

A major theme of the Halo games and novels is seeing how far someone is willing to go for survival, shown in how Master Chief and the other spartans are child soldiers who willingly accept their role as weapons and the last hopes of humanity
This falls apart in the Paramount show when Master Chief abandons the war against the covenant because he doesn’t like that he’s a child solider
83
u/NDinoGuy 8d ago
My "favorite" part of the TV Series is how right after the bad haircut girl (I don't remember her name) got done doing shrooms in the forest and saying how she wants to abandon her home planet, watches her father get brutally murdered by the Covenant, then suddenly just becomes a die hard Insurrectionists against the UNSC (even though the Covenant killed her father, not the UNSC).
But why are the Insurrectionists even a thing in the TV Series? Because her father was told to do it by a bunch of desert witches.

I think it’s even worse than that. In the original lore, I believe Catherine Halsey (the one in charge of the Spartan program) and captain Keyes talked about whether or not to use something to make the kids completely obedient to them like altering their memories or mind control. They rejected the idea on the off chance that if any of the Spartans ever recover their memories or break out of the mind control, there’s a high chance they’ll betray the UNSC. So they decided that the children will all be told the cold truth that they’ve been kidnapped and will never see their families ever again on day 1

A lot of Spartans see it as a necessary evil, and have accepted being child soldiers because humanity lives, and it would have fell and doom everyone to extinction if it wasn’t for the Spartans.

Lilo and Stitch 2025
This is one-half "Missed the point" and one half "Dude, you had something pretty good!"
The Nani vs. Social Services conflict worked in the original because in that version? Nani & Lilo had nobody but each other. They GAINED an 'Ohana in the film and showed "Yeah, they can take care of Lilo and Stitch".
The remake attempts to be more grounded in reality - but adds Tūtū. See, when you add a pre-existing 'ohana in the form of Tūtū & David (instad of David being a coworker / close friend of Nani)? You fundamentally change it. Why doesn't Tūtū help out more...? It just feels more like she's just there to act as a deus ex machina.
And I don't think Lilo being in Tūtū's care is a bad thing - this is actually hānai. The "Dude, you had something good here!" part -they could have easily had it be established that Lilo's in Tūtū and David's care, but Nani's arc isn't "Social services will take my sister away" so much as "If I take this opportunity, I'll be abandoning my family" while we see moments of Tūtū speaking to Nani as an adult. The experience shows "Goodbye" is not forever and they will still be 'Ohana.

Definitely The Electric State, the book has more eldritch horror tone that explores the consequences of mindless consumerism, humanity addiction to technology and corporate influences
Netflix and Russo Brothers however turned it into the most generic corporate marvel style buddy action movie that somehow cost as much to make as an Avenges movie, didn’t help either that it had a character that was basically a product placement as well as having the cast comprise of the most overcasted actors in Hollywood playing the exact same roles they already had done.

I’m sorry I need to complain about Mulan as well - just because the original is one of my favorite movies and one of the best of the Disney Renaissance.
Mulan wasn’t a “princess” she was a HERO. She was brave and strong but more than that, she was CLEVER. She didn’t overpower her enemies, she outsmarted them. She was extremely competent and good at her job, not because she was the strongest but because she was really good at spotting her opponent’s weaknesses, and effectively taking advantage of them.
And Shang respected her as a solider way before he started to admire her as a woman. Reducing him to “love interest” really doesn’t do either of them justice. Their relationship was much more equitable and charming than that. I could imagine they actually LIKED each other, like, as people.
And it’s so funny that after she leaves, the Emperor basically tells Shang, “GO GET HER YOU IDIOT!” He knows ball haha 😆
Anyway Mulan is goated and deserves better then what it got

The Wheel of Time series has a complicated magic system where each gender has a different manifestation with different specialties, and the male half of the system had been horrifically disfigured in a way that anyone who uses it will eventually go mad, leading to societies where woman hold a lot more power as they're the only ones to use magic safely.
The chosen one prophesized to save the world is specifically a man, creating an interesting contradiction where he's supposed to save everyone but is also doomed to go mad. As such people are less eagerly awaiting his coming as they are fearing the coming of this incredibly powerful wizard who might level a country when he snaps. It leads to an incredibly hostile environment for our protagonist when he learns he's the chosen one and shapes much of the series.
But in the Amazon series they throw that out the window and make the chosen one unisex so they could have their stupid mystery box plot where they tease every important character as being potentially the chosen one to generate buzz on social media. This also involves neutering great moments from our protagonist so it's not too obvious, leaving him feeling like a complete wimp even if he hadn't spent the entire first season whining about his girlfriend (which also wasn't in the book). God these books deserved better.

I actually like the fact that it was so bad it got cancelled. This being my favorite series ever, I was extremely disappointed after S1 thinking the general public will now forever relate this wonderful tale with whatever happened in the show.
Luckily, they made it even worse, got cancelled, and everyone ever completely forgot about it.
I’m optimistic that in 20, 50, or even a 100 years, the entertainment industry will evolve to the point where they will be able to adapt fantasy series (any other genres as well) as good as LotR was done.

I read I am Legend when the movie was first advertised, just getting a vibe for what the movie would be like. Not only did it have clever concepts about a post-apocalypse I had never thought about, that last chapter and that last line goes hard AF! The last line just completely flips the concept of protagonist and antagonist, and completely changes your perspective on the character you have grown with and empathized with for hundreds of pages. Blew my mind to punch a reader in the gut like that on the very last line.
Then the movie happened, and I did not feel those feelings. Decent infected movie with some cool scenes, meh ending, but did not have the punch (or even the same plot or themes but whatever) of the book.

u/jayhof52 8d ago
I also love that, in the book, Robert is just a guy. Just a dude from LA who survived and tried to make what he thought was the best of things to try and survive.
It sort of made his experiments both more meaningful and more chilling in context of the final line. Having him be a doctor in the most recent adaptation killed that.

I love the book and cannot stand the film. The first half of the movie is pretty good; everything up til the rampaging drive at the pier is fine. It does a great job of showing how Neville is deteriorating and how he latches onto Sam for any sense of emotional support.
However, the survivors being guided by visions from God COMPLETELY misses the point of the book. The book held religion as an object of curiosity, as Neville tried to theorize why the vampires feared the cross. What he learned was that people, in their final desperate days of illness, turned to religion in droves, and it offered them nothing. It made them fearful of the major symbols (the cross, the star of David, the crescent, etc.) because they felt unworthy of being saved, given that they all died despite their devotion. The film ignores that nuance entirely and just has the girl survivor be like "god told me there is a survivor compound" and never interrogates where that vision came from, or how utterly amazing it would be if a person did serve as an oracle.
And the ending is garbage.

The remake of The Stepford Wives.
The original is a chilling thriller about how men treat women. It's also a mystery, as we don't know what is happening to these women and experience it alongside the female protagonist as her friends change personalities and her husband grows more distant. It's a fantastic movie and I would recommend it to anyone.
The remake is a joke. Actually though - they tried to make it into a comedy for some unknown reason?? Every character is super rich and campy, they add in a gay couple which doesn't even make sense because it's about misogyny* (also all these crazy sexists are apparently fine with gay people), and in the end everything is instantly fixed and everyone is now happy since the main husband decides not to turn his wife into a slave so he's a hero, and the main villain isn't a misogynistic society, but one woman who wants everyone to be a tradwife.
I don't understand how you could misinterpret the original so badly.
Not to mention how the remake can't can't even decide if it wants to go with the original cyborg replicates or if the human-women are just being mind controlled. The 'changed' women can do things like be a literal atm or have their rubber hands melt if they leave them on the stove, but once the hero-husband flips a switch it turns out all the women only had chips put in their head and are now back to normal! Even the one who's hand melted??? I hate this movie so much.

O incluso a Hyoga.

Animal Farm was published in 1945. The Second World War wasn't even over yet. Tens of millions of people were dead, millions more were internally displaced, and most of Europe, East Asia and the Pacific were in ruins.
But yes, clearly kids nowadays have it much worse and deserve a happy ending to cheer them up, unlike those spoilt war orphans.

Netflix’s White Fang. In the original book, White Fang goes with his nice new master to California, where he eventually saves his nice new family from danger and gets a nice new family of his own. In the Netflix adaptation, White Fang gets released back into the wild despite living with humans for most of his life.
There was a biography about Jack London that I read in high school, where I remember it says that White Fang was supposed to complement Call of the Wild. White Fang is a wolf who gets domesticated, while Buck is a domesticated dog who becomes wild.

James Bond in the novels: A blunt instrument in the hands of British intelligence. Morally ambiguous, often brooding and fatalistic about his unattached lifestyle and his short life expectancy as a disposable asset. Themes include the morally questionable nature of Cold War espionage and Britain's changing status in a postwar world.
James Bond in the films (up until the Craig era): Cool spy man with crazy gadgets and a babe on each arm. Themes include lasers, cackling villains, scantily clad women, and how awesome it is to be a spy.

The original (1991) is a phenomenal commentary on freedom vs society and how extremes can cost your everything.
