Hated Tropes An adaptation completely botches the original theme and message

Mulan(2020)-They give Mulan superpowers which is not only lame it goes against the message of the original about equality and struggle, plus they removes Shang because apparently having Mulan date her superior was "problematic" even though Shang genuienely respected Mulan and their rank was never brought up

I am Legend(2007)-You know why the story is called "I am legend"? SPOILER ALERT the protagonist is the actual monster, humanity is gone and the vampires have a actual society and the protagonist kills and terrorize them

Animal Farm(2026)-On the very slim chance that Andy Serkis ever sees this, here's the thing Andy,Animal Farm was not a children work it was not supposed to have a happy ending, you never heard of cautionary tales before?

Lilo and Stitch (2025)

Apparently, 'ohana means giving up custody of your sister to study marine biology.

Leaving HAWAII-which has marine biology schools-to do so.

Leaving a full ride scholarship for a partial scholarship because "Hawaiians don't know what Marine Biology is." That movie was so racist.

711

u/NaCl-And-C12H22O11 8d ago

I would imagine that Hawaii is actually the best place to study marine biology, because you know... HAWAII IS SURROUNDED BY THE VAST OCEAN, also native Hawaiians get a good tuition deal, fucking take up that amazing damn deal and stay in Hawaii with your sister!

223

u/Bamzooki1 8d ago

People go to Hawaii to learn marine biology. It's the world's best program. Nani didn't even need to leave. She could've lived at home with Lilo and commuted to uni.

-23

u/First_Foundationeer 7d ago edited 7d ago

No.. it's not the best.

Edit:

All right, you pasty folks really like to imagine things look good on the islands like when y'all fly over for a sweet little summer vacay.

29

u/Kylel0519 7d ago edited 7d ago

Still better than San Diego, would’ve maybe made sense if they went for Santa Barbra, CA (the actual like #2/#3 school in the U.S. for marine Biology) instead of Hawaii, but no she went to a college know for bioengineering and STEM?

Edit: damn your comment became racist FAST

All while missing the undertones about how touristized Hawaii and how that effects the native population for "hey look at how fun theme parks are"....

31

u/TurnoverStrict6814 8d ago

I have a degree from the University of Hawaiʻi and I was born and raised here on the Big Island. There are better marine science programs out there for sure, especially depending on what your area of interest is.
I think it’s actually more important to get out of here and expand your horizons a bit than staying here your whole life.

Granted this is a real world take, not the hot garbage that was the live action Lilo and Stitch.

5

u/anono227 7d ago

Speaking as someone who has a cousin who moved to Hawaii, it is. He went to study, got his Phd, and now works in Marine Biology. Still in Hawaii.

7

u/Severedeye 7d ago

But you have to remember that to a certain group of people California is the center of the universe so the school had to be there.

1

u/BipedalHorseArt 7d ago

Yea, but you need land for laboratories and libraries and Hawai'i doesn't have enough of that. /s

-2

u/First_Foundationeer 7d ago

It isn't. People who don't live here night imagine that because of the pictures, but pictures ain't academic strength. But it's great if you want to surf and be in the ocean.

Honestly the original animated movie, sequel movies, and the series, are all pretty solid. At its worst the series is just fine but I never felt like it had a dog shit moment. It really felt like one of those series that ended good and didn’t need to be continued or remade.

There is no Lilo and Stich (2025) in Ba Sing Sae. Same with no The Last Airbender or Promised Neverland. None of these exist in Ba Sing Sae.

Incidentally, neither does the quote "There is no war in Ba Sing Se." It's a mandela effect

u/Zephronias 8d ago

They stopped my pal Pleakley from crossdressing, the cowards.

1

u/Ektar91 8d ago

How

2

u/Funkycoldmedici 7d ago

All the ‘Nani abandons Lilo to the foster system to fuck off to a lesser university instead of the better one that she gets for free’ is just not in the movie. The whole movie makes a point of the ohana idea with their neighbor they’ve known and been extended family with their entire lives. Nani doesn’t have free college available in Hawaii, that’s just not a thing. She does have a full-ride scholarship to UC, and it is a higher rated marine biology school than UH. Being an island doesn’t automatically make it a better school. The UH campus isn’t even near where Nani and Lilo live, it’s an hour+ flight away on another island, not a convenient commute.

So the movie ends with Lilo and Nani realizing having this bigger family, Nani getting to pursue her dreams for free, and she has an alien portal gun, so she is still in Lilo’s room with her any time she wants. Everybody wins. Don’t get into from memes.

22

u/DuelaDent52 8d ago

Huh? You’ve got it backwards. She HAS a full ride scholarship to UCSD. The gag of mispronouncing marine biology is across two characters, one of whom is elderly and the other is like six.

99

u/foxfire981 8d ago

Native Hawaiians are provided full ride scholarships to University of Hawaii. In other words she's already given the option, since she lives on the same island as the university, to basically just go to school without losing her home or giving up her sister.

And the UC scholarship still will not cover travel costs and basically any other expenses than the Uni. So basically the movie is claiming the only way for her to get the education that are wants is to go to the mainland.

And other than the "college educated social worker" everyone else acts like they've never heard of it if a native Hawaiian.

15

u/Benoit_Holmes 8d ago

This isn't accurate. There are scholarships for native Hawaiians but they are not all full ride, and full ride scholarships cover things like room and board and sometimes have things like a living stipend (though the movie never specifies).

Also she does not live on the same island as the university. She lives on Kauaʻi which only has a community college. The University of Hawaiʻi is located on O'ahu.

4

u/TurnoverStrict6814 8d ago

This isn’t true. At all. Financial aid and scholarships specifically for kanaka exist, but it’s not just provided.

-2

u/captainfalcon200523 8d ago

To be 100% fair, she does have a magic portal gun. But also this whole movie, the movie that was made to say “Tourists are a bunch of shit bags and should leave Hawaii alone”, was all an ad for Alani.

24

u/TrioOfTerrors 8d ago

And UCSD has the Scripps Institute which is considered one of the premier marine biology centers in the world.

2

u/LazyEights 8d ago

This is really one of the things that they shouldn't have expected audiences to know but you're absolutely right.

Whatever your opinions on Nani giving up custody of Lilo while she went to school, the notion that there's no reason for her to leave Hawaii to study marine biology just isn't factually correct.

She wants to leave Hawaii because UCSD has a better marine biology program than any school in Hawaii.

2

u/TrioOfTerrors 8d ago

I agree. 4 or 5 lines of dialog about how Scripps had been her dream since before their parents died and she had sacrificed that to take care of Lilo and suddenly the custody thing combined with the portal for instant visits whenever makes much more sense.

1

u/TheLordOfAwesome2 8d ago

It's the kind of racism that clearly comes from a place that is oblivious to the fact it is racist.

1

u/King_WhatsHisName 7d ago

Leaving a full ride scholarship in Hawaii - which allows you to study marine biology with both tuition and residency absolutely free if you belong to a natively Hawaiian people (which Nani does) - for a lesser scholarship in California across the Pacific Ocean, where a massive body of water will separate you from your sister whom in the original movie you fought tooth and nail to keep from being taken away by CPS

Thank you Disney, very cool

0

u/Funkycoldmedici 8d ago

She has a full ride scholarship to UC San Diego. There’s literally nothing in it like “Hawaiians don’t know what marine biology is.” Making shit up isn’t necessary.

0

u/Greydragon38 8d ago

Wait that was a point actually made in that abomination of a remake?!?

145

u/adipose1913 8d ago

Not just marine biology schools, the University of Hawaii has arguably the best Marine Biology program on the planet. It's an absolutely insane plot point.

9

u/Funkycoldmedici 8d ago edited 8d ago

This always gets said, but UC San Diego’s marine biology school is higher rated than university of Hawaii. Nani and Lilo also live on Kauaʻi, while the closest UH campus is on another island an hour flight away.

The movie also stresses the extended family thing with their neighbor Tutu doing the whole ohana thing long before their parents died. So it’s very close to begin with, rather than strangers.

The last scene shows Nani playing with Lilo in Lilo’s room. She has an alien portal gun so she can pop anywhere in the world instantly. She’s never farther than the next room.

These complaints are just people who didn’t see the movie and repeat misinformation.

5

u/DuelaDent52 8d ago

The “arguably” in “arguably the best” is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Not to diss Hawaii’s programs at all, but it feels less like people are actually concerned about any societal issues in Hawaii and just want a moral excuse to justify not liking a change from the original when it’s perfectly okay to just… not like it.

236

u/No_Prize9794 8d ago edited 8d ago

Hawaii also doesn’t just have some marine biology school, it has some of the best marine biology programs in the world as well. This makes Nani leaving for mainland to study marine biology an even bigger fumble

52

u/Dakotasan 8d ago

I’m not Hawaiian so correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t college also free for Native Hawaiians?

65

u/MTDLuke 8d ago

No it’s not

there’s lots of scholarship options for native Hawaiians but there isn’t overarching “free college”

5

u/Dakotasan 8d ago

Ah. Thank you for clarifying

31

u/Mannekin-Skywalker 8d ago

No, but of she’s good enough for a full ride scholarship to California, Hawaiian universities would probably bend over backwards to get her in. These scholarships are specifically meant to prevent brain drain like this.

15

u/Dakotasan 8d ago

As I said, Hollywood seems to think SoCal is the center of the universe

1

u/lou-ravenpuff 7d ago

Not necessarily free, but you do get a higher chance if you're a native if I recall correctly

23

u/RaymondBeaumont 8d ago

can conform. art vandaley studied there.

but does the film really end like that??

36

u/TheWorclown 8d ago

Yes. Yes it does. Nani gives up custody of Lilo to go study marine biology stateside.

6

u/DuelaDent52 8d ago edited 8d ago

No, it doesn’t. Nani loses custody of Lilo like in the original, but her community steps up to keep Lilo where she is and then they (especially Lilo) convince Nani to pursue her dreams of going to college.

0

u/Funkycoldmedici 8d ago

It ends with their home wrecked, and the neighbor who has looked after them since they were kids adopting Lilo. Nani has full ride scholarship to a higher rated school, and a portal gun. She portals in to Lilo’s room, and can do so any time she wants.

I do not know why people lie about how it ends.

4

u/LazyEights 8d ago

UCSD has the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, which has a more prestigious marine biology program than any school in Hawaii.

Only saying this to clarify her desire to study there. Hawaii's programs are great. But wanting to study at Scripps is very understandable, it's arguably the best in the world. Not that Disney should have expected a casual audience to know that offhand.

3

u/First_Foundationeer 7d ago

Scripps is far better, but maybe the film makers thought the audience had some idea of college..

37

u/APreciousJemstone 8d ago

It would only be worse if they lived in Brisbane which is right next to the Great Barrier Reef. THAT IS AN INCREDIBLY HIGH BAR

12

u/cjyoung92 8d ago

Brisbane which is right next to the Great Barrier Reef.

Only about 500 km from the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef, but sure, right next to it.

Townsville or Cairns would be a better example

11

u/Kennian 8d ago

Has the best program on the planet to, at least as far as i can remember

1

u/lou-ravenpuff 7d ago

The craziest part is that if you're a native, you have a much higher chance of getting a full scholarship at Hawaii. So she basically wasted a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

255

u/under_the_c 8d ago edited 8d ago

I almost thought sticking to the more "realistic" ending was ballsy, but then of course they decide to end it with Nani being able to use Pleakly's portal gun thing to visit in person whenever she wants anyway. So none of it matters, I guess.

Also, fuck Disney for being cowards and not letting Pleakly crossdress.

47

u/grendus 8d ago

The irony is they still could have used the portal gun, just in reverse.

Have Nani be using the portal gun to commute to school. Do a slow pan through the house with David seeing Nani off to school, Jumba helping Lilo with a school project (and Pleakly freaking out about him including some comedic sci-fi element), Stitch teaching tricks to the neighborhood dogs or some other sight gag, and you're golden. Nani is able to go to school now because she's not alone trying to raise her sister, but she's still there for Lilo, not just visiting regularly but together as family.

The moral is still that Nani shouldn't have had to give up her future to take care of her sister, but it doesn't forget that Ohana means family... not just the family that you're born with, but the family you make.

6

u/TheRealRichon 7d ago

But the reality is that sometimes you DO have to give things up to care for your family, and that's what makes the original Nani so heroic and inspirational. Her entire character is cheapened by allowing her to fulfill her dreams, when she's supposed to be a George Bailey archetype.

41

u/sufficiently_tortuga 8d ago

Getting rid of the benign queer elements of the original made me not want to even try watching the live action.

16

u/BalancedDisaster 8d ago

So why wouldn’t she just use it to commute to classes?!

4

u/Sean_13 7d ago

It is really weird times when cross dressing has been normalised for decades (E.g. Bugs bunny) but only now is it deemed unacceptable

1

u/1_Am_Andrew_Ryan 7d ago

Yes, because now it will upset some men.

1

u/Nick_Wild1Ear 7d ago

Men who were boys watching Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry and Ms Doubtfire etc etc etc

116

u/Kilroy0497 8d ago

This one becomes especially stupid, when you remember that she’s going to California to study it when they live in HAWAII!

58

u/Dakotasan 8d ago

Californians try not to be egocentric challenge

15

u/Kilroy0497 8d ago

Yeah that sounds about right. Like I know most of Hollywood thinks that whole state is in the end all be all of everything and can do no wrong, despite the streets apparently being covered in turds at the moment, but I mean, a simple google search could have told them their being stupid in this regard, and then they wouldn’t have had to spit in the face of original and its message so hard. Of course then again, I’m pretty all these live action remakes exist mostly to spit in the original’s face, but still.

-9

u/Dakotasan 8d ago

And Californians wonder why every other state hated California…

1

u/Anybro 8d ago

That's the south california. A good portion of northern california is a lot more well rounded. Especially in the mental department, and we look at our southern brothers and wondering, what the hell is going on down there? Trust me, we're just as confused as the rest of the states.

4

u/Dakotasan 8d ago

Maybe I should narrow it down to the Hollywood/LA area

113

u/LilMissy1246 8d ago

As an adopted person myself, it’s so awful to make it seem as if giving up a child is something that should be done casually. Some adoptees have PTSD due to being taken from their families at a young age and not having a parental unit as a child until later (only if they’re adopted). It’s such a serious subject matter and it just makes me ick. I know it’s acting and all but…poor kid.

3

u/DuelaDent52 8d ago edited 8d ago

It wasn’t really done that casually, though? Nani retreats into herself over it partway through the film.

36

u/TheGeckoWrangler 8d ago

Like, what the hell is Disney trying to do with these live action “adaptations” that are nothing like the original story they’re based on?

Now, I’ll admit that the Jungle Book adaptation was actually a decent movie, and I’ve heard mixed reviews about the Lion King movies, but, as you said, they COMPLETELY butchered everything Lilo and Stitch represents to make a new version of the original(and extremely well made) movie that got so popular it not only got a semi-successful cartoon series, a sequel film AND a prequel film, but it also got a friggin anime. Like, why? What do you have to gain by damaging your own work with a message you can’t seriously think people are going to accept?

And this is the first I’m hearing of Mulan getting friggin super powers(all I knew about that movie before hand was that Mushu got cut out).

Don’t know much about the The Little Mermaid or Snow White remakes, but everything I’ve heard about them suggests they were straight up awful.

20

u/RavenKweenX 8d ago

Little Mermaid actually made several improvements over the animated version insofar as addressing plot holes, and fleshing out characters, and the animation is gorgeous. Easily one of the best live action adaptations.

10

u/AustisticGremlin 8d ago

Didn’t it create another plot hole though?
King Triton’s trident is shown to be able to resurrect the dead in the new one, so why did he not resurrect his wife (her death being the whole reason he hates humans so vehemently)?

7

u/RavenKweenX 8d ago

Hold on, I might have to rewatch it because it's been a minute. Who got resurrected?

9

u/AustisticGremlin 7d ago

Triton - Ursula kills him instead of turning him into a little worm thing in the finale.

3

u/TheGeckoWrangler 8d ago

Huh, ok, fair enough.

My point still stands for the others though XD

10

u/RavenKweenX 8d ago

Lion King was actually pretty good, the chief complaint was that the animals weren't stylized or emotive enough, and not everyone thought that was necessarily a problem.

Snow White, however, is one of the rare ones that I started and gave up on before finishing.

The live actions are a definite mixed bag.

13

u/ZeroiaSD 8d ago

"Lion King was actually pretty good, the chief complaint was that the animals weren't stylized or emotive enough, and not everyone thought that was necessarily a problem."

As an animation fan and an animal fan I couldn't stand it. They took one of the most colorful movies set in a very colorful real life place and made it brown, and then they made 'realistic' lion models that emoted significantly less than real lions, let alone their animated versions. Upset Simba and sad Simba looked far too similar.

3

u/MrKnightMoon 7d ago

I recall one of the first reviews I've seen about it focusing exactly on that: How plain and unimpressive where the visuals of the movie. They went extra far to make it look realistic, to the point it looks way more bleak than the real environment they represent.

That review even mocked that extremely realistic style for how they took their time to erase the animals genitals and anus, like everything is extra realistic, but the characters can't shit.

8

u/ThatOneGuyHOTS 8d ago

My thing is the animals looked too real. Everybody looked the same. And I personally hated the music

6

u/TheGeckoWrangler 8d ago

Yeh, though I gotta say it’s kinda weird how you can go from having a remake like the Jungle Book that respects the original movie and has a well put together plot, to a remake like Lilo and Stitch where they just straight up chuck everything from the original story out the window. I imagine it’s probably a matter of different directors and writers(some of which probably shouldn’t have been in those positions, evidently), but it still seems odd that Disney wouldn’t try to maintain some sort of consistency across their remakes.

And lol I heard the lead actress for Snow White apparently also threw a fit over how poorly the movie did.

Also, if I might ask, have you seen the prequel they made about Mufasa and Scar’s childhood? I’ve been considering watching that one, but given that it’s exclusively live action, Ive been hesitant to say the least.

5

u/ZeroiaSD 8d ago

"And lol I heard the lead actress for Snow White apparently also threw a fit over how poorly the movie did."

I mean, wouldn't you be upset if you thought you were going to have your big break in an iconic role but instead got met with tons of hate, a lot of which for stuff you had no control of? It'd be a rare person who didn't crash out.

3

u/RavenKweenX 8d ago

I thought it was OK, although truthfully I was more interested in the animation than the plot. The plot might have been a bit taka, but it was definitely pretty to look at.

Insofar as the level of emoting they were capable of, it seemed increased in the prequel, but if I'm being honest with myself, I could have had the entire movie narrated by David Attenborough and been happy as a clam, so I may not exactly be the best person to ask. I was more fixated on the cutting edge animation than anything.

7

u/Raincoat19 8d ago

Honestly one of my biggest gripes with Lion King was Can You Feel the Love TONIGHT taking place largely during the DAY

2

u/Hot_Statistician_466 7d ago

Dunno, I saw only the songs, and they looked horrible compared to the original. So lifeless without the animation. Can't say much on the story tho

41

u/wipedoutmom 8d ago

That ending genuinely just infuriates the shit out of me. I get rabid

6

u/javjam 8d ago

People be leaving out the biggest thing.

No Captain Gantu. No huge shark man thingy.

Absolute travesty.

10

u/CatoOFthelake 8d ago

its not outwardly stated in the original movie but Nami's fears of losing Lilo to the system were entirely founded especially from a historical perspective so it seems disingenuous to just chose to.. gloss over that??

1

u/Quaelgeist333 7d ago

Isn't the song she sings Lilo the night before they think she'll be taken away a song by the actual last queen of hawaii in big part about indigenous children being taken away

Didn't the agents also try literally everything to take lilo away too?

3

u/Ruri_997 8d ago

Let's not forget the Stitch anime

16

u/thefinalhill 8d ago

Ohana means family. And back when the original was aired that meant sticking together no matter what. The 'no matter what' lead to a lot of toxic families. The remake tried (and failed) to show how family can mean different things for different people.

13

u/muqrxo 8d ago

I appreciate them trying to take a different approach I just don’t think it properly paid off in the live action.

2

u/Quaelgeist333 7d ago

I think this severely misses the context of Nami and Lilo being indigenous and only having each other while the government wants to take away Lilo for anti indigenous reasons
It wasn't really about "no matter what" I feel

1

u/Hero_of_the_toons 7d ago

I still can’t believe that abomination is getting a sequel

1

u/RadBoyHours 7d ago

I think the remake is butt-ass HOWEVER I respect the point they make in the remake that's never really named in the animated movie which is that Nani is also basically a kid. Nineteen is very young to dedicate your entire life to raising what is essentially a daughter you didnt ask for, no matter how much you love them, so I think the priority of Nani being allowed to pursue things she wants without being forced to raised Lilo alone is a solid, realistic addition to the story.

Everything else sucks tho

1

u/tetsuo9000 7d ago

Nani in general was done so wrong I the adaption. Sydney Agudong isn't even native Hawaiian.

1

u/mini1006 8d ago

It also makes the movie make zero sense. She fights to keep custody of Lilo just to end up giving her up to the system anyways?

Not to mention the fact that the foster care system had a history of stealing indigenous children from their families. Who the heck decided this was a good idea?

1

u/Foxlikebox 7d ago

Came here to say this. The message of the original movie was that Nani literally did anything in her power to keep Lilo with her because they were all the family they had left at that point. This change completely spits in the face of that.

0

u/ToonMasterRace 8d ago

You can tell that film was written by a childless millennial cat lady

0

u/Kirajudgeoftoons 7d ago

Most likely the people whom worked on the LA remake were victims of parentification as children, watched Lilo and Stitch and with their warped brains thought it is an movie that glorifies it so in their misguided minds this is their way of giving Nani justice

She wasn’t “burdened.” She WANTED custody of Lilo!! That’s the whole point of the movie! She’s fighting so hard so she doesn’t lose custody!! The movie is about fighting for your chosen family. Nani didn’t HAVE to be Lilo’s guardian. Lilo could have gone into foster care

That's unfortunately a very common outcome of the foster system, actually. Lots of homeless kids and young adults.

Adopters want babies the vast majority of the time. They're not adopting foster kids, especially kids with connections they want to keep. Kinship care tends to have far better outcomes for the children in custody.

You should look any of this up before you keep saying something so boneheadedly wrong.

I’m sorry but this is the most stupid thing I’ve read all day from someone completely ignorant about “the system.” No, IRL this is exactly what would happen - they reach out to next of kin before anyone else because the goal is to keep children with their families - especially with native families. It’s why even the most horrible parents are given endless chances to reunite with their children because studies show children statistically experience better outcomes if they are reunited with family. Most kids actually DONT wind up in the foster care/adoption system - which can be a traumatic and horrible experience for many children, especially for siblings who get separated!
