Hated Tropes An adaptation completely botches the original theme and message

Mulan(2020)-They give Mulan superpowers which is not only lame it goes against the message of the original about equality and struggle, plus they removes Shang because apparently having Mulan date her superior was "problematic" even though Shang genuienely respected Mulan and their rank was never brought up

I am Legend(2007)-You know why the story is called "I am legend"? SPOILER ALERT the protagonist is the actual monster, humanity is gone and the vampires have a actual society and the protagonist kills and terrorize them

Animal Farm(2026)-On the very slim chance that Andy Serkis ever sees this, here's the thing Andy,Animal Farm was not a children work it was not supposed to have a happy ending, you never heard of cautionary tales before?

Lilo and Stitch (2025)

Apparently, 'ohana means giving up custody of your sister to study marine biology.

Like, what the hell is Disney trying to do with these live action “adaptations” that are nothing like the original story they’re based on?

Now, I’ll admit that the Jungle Book adaptation was actually a decent movie, and I’ve heard mixed reviews about the Lion King movies, but, as you said, they COMPLETELY butchered everything Lilo and Stitch represents to make a new version of the original(and extremely well made) movie that got so popular it not only got a semi-successful cartoon series, a sequel film AND a prequel film, but it also got a friggin anime. Like, why? What do you have to gain by damaging your own work with a message you can’t seriously think people are going to accept?

And this is the first I’m hearing of Mulan getting friggin super powers(all I knew about that movie before hand was that Mushu got cut out).

Don’t know much about the The Little Mermaid or Snow White remakes, but everything I’ve heard about them suggests they were straight up awful.

Little Mermaid actually made several improvements over the animated version insofar as addressing plot holes, and fleshing out characters, and the animation is gorgeous. Easily one of the best live action adaptations.

Didn’t it create another plot hole though?
King Triton’s trident is shown to be able to resurrect the dead in the new one, so why did he not resurrect his wife (her death being the whole reason he hates humans so vehemently)?

Hold on, I might have to rewatch it because it's been a minute. Who got resurrected?

Triton - Ursula kills him instead of turning him into a little worm thing in the finale.

Huh, ok, fair enough.

My point still stands for the others though XD

Lion King was actually pretty good, the chief complaint was that the animals weren't stylized or emotive enough, and not everyone thought that was necessarily a problem.

Snow White, however, is one of the rare ones that I started and gave up on before finishing.

The live actions are a definite mixed bag.

"Lion King was actually pretty good, the chief complaint was that the animals weren't stylized or emotive enough, and not everyone thought that was necessarily a problem."

As an animation fan and an animal fan I couldn't stand it. They took one of the most colorful movies set in a very colorful real life place and made it brown, and then they made 'realistic' lion models that emoted significantly less than real lions, let alone their animated versions. Upset Simba and sad Simba looked far too similar.

I recall one of the first reviews I've seen about it focusing exactly on that: How plain and unimpressive where the visuals of the movie. They went extra far to make it look realistic, to the point it looks way more bleak than the real environment they represent.

That review even mocked that extremely realistic style for how they took their time to erase the animals genitals and anus, like everything is extra realistic, but the characters can't shit.

My thing is the animals looked too real. Everybody looked the same. And I personally hated the music

Yeh, though I gotta say it’s kinda weird how you can go from having a remake like the Jungle Book that respects the original movie and has a well put together plot, to a remake like Lilo and Stitch where they just straight up chuck everything from the original story out the window. I imagine it’s probably a matter of different directors and writers(some of which probably shouldn’t have been in those positions, evidently), but it still seems odd that Disney wouldn’t try to maintain some sort of consistency across their remakes.

And lol I heard the lead actress for Snow White apparently also threw a fit over how poorly the movie did.

Also, if I might ask, have you seen the prequel they made about Mufasa and Scar’s childhood? I’ve been considering watching that one, but given that it’s exclusively live action, Ive been hesitant to say the least.

I mean, wouldn't you be upset if you thought you were going to have your big break in an iconic role but instead got met with tons of hate, a lot of which for stuff you had no control of? It'd be a rare person who didn't crash out.

I thought it was OK, although truthfully I was more interested in the animation than the plot. The plot might have been a bit taka, but it was definitely pretty to look at.

Insofar as the level of emoting they were capable of, it seemed increased in the prequel, but if I'm being honest with myself, I could have had the entire movie narrated by David Attenborough and been happy as a clam, so I may not exactly be the best person to ask. I was more fixated on the cutting edge animation than anything.

Honestly one of my biggest gripes with Lion King was Can You Feel the Love TONIGHT taking place largely during the DAY

Dunno, I saw only the songs, and they looked horrible compared to the original. So lifeless without the animation. Can't say much on the story tho
