News/Article The PS5 system itself is running on pc

Recently, we have seen massive developments in PS5 emulators (such as shadPS4 and Kyty), and how rapidly they have progressed in a short period.

Now, developers have successfully booted the actual PS5 system software on PC.

If this momentum continues in the future, it will eventually allow players to run PS5 exclusives directly on PC, marking the end of the era of console exclusivity.

I think most people hate Gen AI especially when used for creative purposes.

This kind of use most people don’t really care about.

Unironically, yes. The horrors of war needs to be felt by the perpetrators or there will be no limits to how far they will go. The more removed people are from the situation, the more abstract it becomes and the easier it gets to ignore the effects it has on the victims.

The drone footage is insane. It's already robots vs. Humans. Pumped to emulate a system I will never buy. I stopped after PS3. I'm not paying a service fee to play online.

There's an old Star Trek episode about that! Kirk and buds visit a planet that is "at war" but gradually realize that both sides have agreed to simply simulate casualties and order their citizens into suicide booths, rather than actually blow up buildings and have a mess to clean up. Ultimately the war is doomed to go on killing forever, because nobody is actually reckoning with the real cost anymore.

Ever heard Dan Carlin's Blueprint for Armageddon series? In podcast episode 55, at about the two hour and five minute mark he retells British Private Alfred Grosch's story of being captured by the Germans:

Captured on 22 March 1918, lying out in the open with a young soldier who has a bad head wound. The first wave of Germans is almost on top of them. Carlin reads his account:

"Leave it to me, boy. We're done. We're prisoners now. Do whatever I tell you."
I wait a second and then "Up," I say, "and take your helmet off." We do so. The German in front of me says "Ah," raises his rifle and takes aim. I mutter to myself: "I hope to God he won't pull that trigger."
For ten seconds we remain so. Then he lowers his rifle, and says what I take to be "wounded?" I nod and say, "yes, yes." He beckons and we approach… The German has spared us. Would we have spared him under the circumstances? God knows. Perhaps not.

The passage ends here.

I'll gladly take my chances and throw myself at the mercy of another human being any day. At least then there's a chance. A mindless machine programmed to kill humans won't stop for anything. There is no capacity for mercy there, no compassion.

18

u/SmashingK 8d ago

I'm not going to be haunting the mind of a machine. At least I can out traumatising a human lol

If you think software development is not a creative job, then you have never developed software.

It's not creative in the whimsical freedom sense, but it's all about using creativity to solve problems.

13

u/GenderGambler 8d ago

Software development is absolutely a creative job, but reverse engineering is not; and it is actually one of the things AI actually excels at

Which is worrying in and of itself, due to several other things we take for granted about software development as a whole.

20

u/Toodlez 8d ago

Very few people consume code as art, though, so its kind of a moot point.

14

u/LeoRidesHisBike 8d ago

By that logic, the degree that art is popular determines how much it is "art". That... doesn't track.

Unless I missed your point.

9

u/Toodlez 8d ago

Im not worried about the definition of art. Im talking about peoples feelings towards AI replacing actors and musicians as opposed to AI replacing programmers.

The general public would be shocked at how much software development is ai "assisted" these days. I went to a software engineering conference a few months ago and there was a survey that said something like 90% of the coders there use agentic ai for coding every day. A few years ago that number (for any ai use) was under 10%. These aren't vibe coders. This was for embedded systems that run our factories and control our vehicles. Seasoned veterans, senior/staff engineers coding with ai everyday. It spread so fast.

12

u/FriendlyKillerCroc 8d ago

My favourite part about Reddit right now is the programming subreddit having rules in place so they can effectively ignore that AI exists because they hate how wrong they were about it for years lol

24

u/emelrad12 8d ago

Yeah.... And totally not because all of those subs are getting flooded by low quality submissions that were done in a single prompt.

10

u/FriendlyKillerCroc 8d ago

No, no. I don't mean the rule about not allowing LLM-generated content.

They literally do not allow you to talk about LLMs. They have designed a policy that doesn't explicitly say that but they left it open enough to allow them to delete everything related to LLMs because it's not relevant enough. It's hilarious.

5

u/Ilikeyounott 8d ago

Is it a problem? Go to ie. /r/claude if you want to see people talk about Claude? If you want to read about things like programming fundamentals you go to /r/programming?

13

u/FriendlyKillerCroc 8d ago

Yes it's a problem lol They can't even move in the room because of the size of the elephant but they are all just staring at the floor secretly hoping it leaves of its own accord while posting mostly shitty articles about small projects people are working on, and making sure none of them mention LLMs in any capacity.

The name of the subreddit does not imply its about fundamentals, it suggests that it covers the whole spectrum of programming. If someone went there with no knowledge of the industry, they would come away with never even knowing that the biggest change in the industry's history happened lol

I'm guessing you are a regular there?

I think there's a bit of Jevons Paradox going on in the world of software. Increased efficiency is leading to more software being produced. And the coders are still there, because if you tell the ai "build a ps5 emulator" you will get nonsense. There needs to be a competent human involved.

8

u/throwaway490215 8d ago

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree, but the average dev at the average company is vastly underappreciated as people seem to approach them with an 'off-by-1' error.

They think of them as parts of the IT silo, a subsection or as an assembly worker to some product.

Devs are manager level position. HR is a bit different as functions don't call in sick, turnover rate for ideas is different as people expect re-orgs to be done in weeks what management will allow months if not years for humans, but devs are at the heart managing the processes of an organization.

As AI improves, we'll find more and more companies have to change culture to adapt to that.

Companies who value their skill of 'human powered work' are going to get left behind the places where software experts are placed as peers in the top level meetings that set company workflows.

Companies that have done this in the past 2 decades have been some of the most successful, but it wasn't a full-blown trend yet. With AI the benefits to do so has increased dramatically.

4

u/BorKon 8d ago

You are missing the point. Yes you still need developer to be involved. Only that you dont need 50 people for something, you need only 5. And as this continues to improve you will need less and less.

3

u/iloveuranus 8d ago

Is it? Even in the days of automation where a machine can bore 10k holes/hour and cut 100,000 bolts and nuts in half a day and can machine out 50,000 fittings.

There's still a need for the guy who can do it by hand and can cut them so perfectly that air pressure will eject the fitting, or bolt and strip the threads out. Skill isn't something that gets tossed in the dustbin.

2

u/ZeroV2 8d ago

True, but now you need a team of 5 guys who can do precision work instead of the 5 guys who do precision and the 5000 who do mass production.

Top tier coders and devs will babysit AI code and entry level or journeymen will have to find something else to do

This isn't taking developers jobs.

Someone who can actually code is way more effective when using these tools compared to someone without coding experience. Companies aren't hiring the latter to develop.

43

u/xaxis-yaxis 8d ago

Which is exactly what we see in the market now, there's way less graduate and junior roles available than there were even a few years ago.

Companies are gonna realise there's a shortage of competent senior developers down the line simply because there aren't enough juniors getting experience.

The massive developments in modding and emulation over the last few days is not even making paying jobs more efficient.

Translating the 1s and 0s that a program is run on into a "source code" that can then be run on other hardware or operating systems is what the latest AI models do to make this possible. Previously a human would have to painstakingly do this by trial and error, and since the people who own the copyright to this code already have the real source code (unless they lost it) there was not really anyone doing this for an employer.

I'm sure I'm missing something and that this will affect jobs in some other way, but so far I've only seen this help fan projects and pirates.

A good coder understands that its just a tool line any other

29

u/SpacePumpkie I use Arch btw 8d ago edited 8d ago

A good human being understands that the real problem is how the companies are managing the shit and closing access and charging an entry fee to what always has been publicly accesible information. Heck, even all the research on LLMs and GPTs was done publicly mainly in tandem with university researchers until OpenAI closed it off because they saw profit and kicked off the race in private (but not after having taken advantage of what everyone else was doing out in the open).

All this tech should be one hundred percent open sourced because the models were taken from the open research community, the knowledge for training was taken from the open internet and all previous created works, and now they charge for access and don't give anything back to humanity's pool of knowledge. Instead they're trying to keep it gated and charge for access to it. After having taken all they could for free (and illegally).

5

u/No_Brother1599 8d ago

Open weight models are available. The only barrier to entry is the cost of hardware

→ More replies (5)

2

u/BoopinSnoots24-7 8d ago

They're not charging an entry fee to the information. The information is public. What they're charging for is their models, which are so far removed from the initial public research on LLMs that is like comparing a Ford Model T to a modern day Ferrari.

AI companies charging you to use their product makes perfect sense. The only economic problem is them not sharing revenue with those who created the data they train on.

Even then, it's not that straightforward. If you post your art on Instagram, Meta owns that data. If you post on Reddit, Reddit owns that data. If AI labs were to compensate their sources, the vast majority of that would go towards private companies who you willingly already provide your data/work to.

There is no precedent for this level of scope, and it doesn't seem like there is really a feasible approach yet to compensating individuals. I do hope they figure it out soon.

2

u/xaxis-yaxis 8d ago

This is actually entirely meaningless when the entire junior/grad market has basically been annihilated over the last few years.

There's a fraction of jobs at that level compared to 5 years ago. Coders aren't so scared of AI in that they don't know how to use it, they're better than basically everyone else at it, but because companies are cutting jobs for AI.

You can't be a software engineer if there's not enough jobs for software engineers.

3

Imagine a carpenter that enjoys working with wood and spent all his life mastering his craft. Then someone invents a machine that does all the carpenting autimatically.

Sure it makes mistakes. Not many people care. And working without the machine is not reallly legible anymore because it's that much more fast. Now your job as a carpenter is to talk to a machine so that it makes something instead of you.

Sure some people will say it's just a tool that they will now use instead. But I personally don't see myself being a programmer in the era of AI. For me vibecoding feels as much different from coding as dancing. And I don't really see myself in any other profession that isn't being consumed by AI.

3

u/BoxOfDemons PC Master Race 8d ago

It's more akin to if you're a carpenter, and you still plan and draw out the build, mark every nail spot, and the tool just hammers the nails for you. At least with actual competent coders using AI.

2

u/this_is_a_hellscape2 8d ago

I work w/ powershell rather regularly @ my job. AI has definitely been a boon for getting the bones of whatever convoluted script I'm trying to implement, together.

I still feel rather negative about folks who leverage AI in technical and creative spaces in a way that amounts to "computer, create [thing] for me" and then calling it a day though.

You can stupidly vibe code and still get tons done. Especially with these newer models. I have friends who don't know shit about tech making some really pretty, useful, interesting apps. I couldn't care less that they just vibe coded it over the course of a weekend. They find value you in it, enjoy it, and creates value for them. They don't "need" to know how to code more than necessary.

2

u/devi83 8d ago

if you vibe code you can still setup gates and tests for the agents to follow and stay on script

→ More replies (1)

2

u/SpacePumpkie I use Arch btw 8d ago

Yeah, the main problem is not so much the what but the how with AI companies.

The models are being trained for profit on all the knowledge openly available on the internet without any regard for who owns those works and how that knowledge came to be. And given back to us for a fee (vastly subsidized with the current bubble). But now those pools of knowledge dry out (stackexchange has collapsed in visits, while being an incredible source of knowledge for AIs, etc etc) because we don't go there anymore, we only ask the LLM, that of course doesn't contribute back to that pool of knowledge, the conversations we have with them remain private for those companies to train further models, but only for them.

So we have a lot of companies, taking publicly available knowledge (illegally in most cases), closing it off for their own and only profit, wrecking the hardware market in the process, and locking everything down behind a paywall.

And right now we're in the "get you hooked for free" phase. We'll se how much fun it is when they start raking up the prices to offset the actual cost and get their profit.

You'll probably find that the people who are doing these things can probably code quite well. it's just that things like Claude can help speed things up massively. Things that used to take months/years to do can probably take a few weeks now.

55

u/gutster_95 9d ago

That is the misconsumption of AI: A coder still needs to know what the Bot is coding. Those emulators arent a "Okay Claude make me a emulator" prompt. They require knowledge how OS works, what instructions need to be converted, what even needs to be translated, how shaders work etc etc.

A normal AI Dude wouldnt be able to do this stuff in that amount of time thats for sure.

22

u/Vaxtez i3-12100F/32GB/RX6600 9d ago

Exactly. People are acting like the people doing this have 0 clue, when the people doing these PS5 Emulators know fully well what they're doing. A kid can't just tell Claude to just make them a fully functional PS5 emulator as is.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/DependentAnywhere135 8d ago

Eh I don’t know about that. With the right prompt you could absolutely have Claude make an emulator. A good prompt isn’t a small paragraph it’s a full write up of required milestones, how to score and verify work and actual work process. Then having AI build out the architecture and set up a loop. Human input after that can literally just be running the software at set points and writing down what needs improvement.

Having coding experience is highly beneficial, but it’s really not necessary. Claude can be setup on a loop to build a functional emulator with minimal human input.

3

u/gutster_95 8d ago

Yea but than you have a scenario where your Emulator glitches out and all you can say: It doesnt work. Than AI thinks they found a fix but breaks it in other instances, because you are only fixing symptome after symptome but never the underlying problem. And here is why Vibecoder usually fail at complex tasks. They dont understand why the problem occur and AI only fixes the problem but not the root of the problem. Having a good understanding what plattform you are using to build on, unterstanding steps in Software development cant be replaced by Claude. Because half the stuff Claude would spit out wouldnt be understood by a normal person.

Nuance!? In my tribalism app!?

3

u/zeldavxa 8d ago

well i mean. it still is stolen datasets and quitebpolutting plus the political issues arising from catering to thenproviders of it. But this also has the issue of making the code harder to review/fix/patch/understand so these projects might have a really poor shelf life

2

u/jpglew 8d ago

Anyone doing software work nowadays will tell you ai has become a central tool whether they like it or not. The output you can achieve with it outweighs the occasional mistake it makes, and for simple tasks or for projects with limited scope it doesn't make sense not to just use it, even if that means buying it for a month yourself and having it do it, because for most people it's a no brainer choosing to spend $50-100 for a custom piece of software that otherwise would have taken weeks to figure out how to do themselves, or cost hundreds of times more for someone else to do it for them.

3

u/shawntw77 8d ago

And when its being incessantly forced down our throats. Its a great tool no doubt, but my little air temp and humidity gauge does not need AI to track history when a few relatively simple lines of code can do the exact same thing, or just exist as an even more basic product without tracking, I only need to know the current temp and humidity in my room.

4

u/Dry-Engineering9224 9d ago

i don't think most people care either way, besides companies pushing for it so hard.

1

u/MaybeMort 8d ago

I care that I can't afford to upgrade my pc too.

1

u/PossibleVariety7927 8d ago

They come with the territory. That's the issue. People who are anti AI are so caught up on the art, that they hate the whole thing. Which is weird, because I couldn't give a shit about the art. Don't like it? Don't use it. If someone else wants to use it, go for it. Iunno why everyone's all uptight about fucking people using AI to do quick art designs for them. So much cheaper and saved time... Like insane amounts of saved time. Sure, there's some 13 year olds trying to pass off AI art as real art. But again, I couldn't care less.

It's one of the weirdest obsessions. I think it's because Redditors are just young kids mostly and that's their ONE skill they have, but AI is taking them all. So who cares lol

1

u/AstraBed 8d ago

There's people actively hating on the guys on YT who are merging games just for fun😭✌🏻

There are clearly bad uses (terrible uses even) and good ones, but sadly like with all things people are just too stupid to actually go read and understand it, they instead prefer to act tribal even if we have all human knowledge in the palm of our hand all the time

1

u/nokafein 8d ago

Ah, good old hypocrisy. Some people’s jobs are more important than the others it seems. Ai is bad but only in these 2 disciplines I decided it is. For the rest, ai is ok.

Have some backbones lads. Either reject something or be in favor of it.

1

u/Away_Candidate_4746 8d ago

Idk what world you’re living in, but every other day the front page has some game studio getting roasted for using AI to help with development. It’s funny how some people hate it when it doesn’t benefit them and then they like it once they can play Wolverine without a PS5.

1

u/Long_Pomegranate2469 8d ago

So coding jobs are worth less than creative purposes. Gotcha

1

u/BSchafer 3090 FE | 5800x3D | Samsung Odyssey G9 8d ago

I think most people are so dumb they don’t understand the difference.

1

u/flow_fighter 8d ago

It’s bizarre to me how many people see AI decompiling as “slop”.

Like yes, the things coming out of it (game in a game) are most certainly vibe coded, but the actual decomp itself is primarily just verification checks on code-to-system data points.

It’s more-so simple code and a “yes/no function”

1

u/1v1RightMeow 8d ago

Well I mean when a greedy multibillion company tells you that buying isn’t owning, they kinda did it to themselves really. You’re right though I don’t like Ai for a number of reasons but it can be useful if done right.

1

u/BaconIsntThatGood PC Master Race 8d ago

Nah there are a lot of people that are adamant it has no place in programming

1

u/Key-Conference1870 8d ago

Especially there has been some medical breakthroughs. I’m not qualified enough to talk about this but we just hate generative AI.

1

u/AtreyuTrinity 8d ago

I use ai a lot for work but I am in this boat, generative AI is what I hate, and way way more energy intensive.

1

u/moep123 8d ago

another factor why it is hated is also because it's over usage in all fields. people using it as therapy stuff etc. and because of the overly usage everything else on this planet gets continously much more expensive.

1

u/HustlinInTheHall 8d ago

Every week some game discloses that AI was used in development and people lose their shit.

Meanwhile I guarantee every studio game released in the last year used AI in development.

1

u/M_H_M_F 8d ago

At the end of the day, AI is really a specialized tool that is helpful in particular scenarios and not a giant band-aid to be applied to everything.

Being a tool, it still has to be watched and corrected.

1

u/lukkasz323 8d ago

This kind of use is Gen AI.

1

u/SeatBeeSate 8d ago

People hate Gen AI because it's going to lead to socital and ecological collapse.

1

u/gokuby 8d ago

Which is insane cause this use of AI is one of the potential dangeous parts. We're already insanely close to decompile every software in existence.

1

u/pyrotato 8d ago

I'm the creator/maintainer of an open source app that lets people stream "media" no matter the provider (if you know what I mean)

Not a fan of LLMs in the rest of my life, but i will use them to steal back, thank you very much.

1

u/logicom 8d ago

Except that this will greatly accelerate the move to cloud streaming services. If anyone with a little bit of knowledge and a Claude subscription can reverse engineer an entire console's OS and port it to Windows then we simply won't get consoles anymore.

1

u/G0dZylla 8d ago

So hypocritical ( not talking about you) it always boils down to this kind of phrasing it was all a moral front untill AI actually becomes useful

1

u/DataHellfire 8d ago

I don't like gen ai

Ai code means they have a higher chance of using ai in the creative aspects

However ai being used as a tool for cool things is of course cool

Also I hate the umbrella "I hate ai" because a lot of things are a form of "ai" (machine learning algorithms fall under AI if I recall correctly)

1

u/Lord_Bobbymort 8d ago

I do because less and less time will be spent by curious people trying to do something cool with their time doing decompilation and emulation projects, learning things, using their brains, and progressing our society with critical thought.

1

u/IntingForMarks 8d ago

oh yeah. Artists out of jobs, very bad. But software engineers out of jobs is very nice lol

1

u/Frank__West 8d ago

Can't say you hate AI but then say. Oh but this is fine. Like pick a lane buddy.

1

u/x_wbmr_x 8d ago

Exactly. I have no hate for people who use it as a tool to achieve new things we couldn't before. It's the generative shit, slop and bots that I hate so god damn much.

1

u/EKmars RX 9070|Intel i5-13600k|DDR5 32 GB 8d ago

Ye GenAI sucks so much. Coders don't seem to have the same dispathy towards it being applied to their work. I guess there's not the same culture of viewing code as output of human expression, even if its used for art like games.

1

u/iloveuranus 8d ago

Nah I hate it because it takes my job.

1

u/AshRemnants 8d ago

This is literally the same thing. People are mad that AI is taking money away from artists. What exactly do you think you are doing when you are taking away purchases from the artists who makes games?

1

u/willdabeast180 8d ago

This will lead to far worse things. Things we cannot comprehend yet. Stuff like this was so difficult for people that it was PART of the security systems, now that security system is gone. It’s games now, it’s bank accounts, personal data, your car, etc everything in the future.

1

u/BitterCommission3987 8d ago

Nope, people are just weirdly selective about it. The other day someone posted a hobby project for the game Trackmania, the idea was cool and people were already using it, but reception was pretty negative on his first post, and the owner had to make a post explaining himself, which didn't help either.

The cause? Use of AI. I swear that being an open source developer has to be one of the most ungrateful jobs there is. Dude decides to do something nice for the community on his own free time and people are expecting top tier, AI free code.

1

u/Notoisin 8d ago

This is creative.

1

u/RegalKillager 8d ago

If I can throw my two cents in: Generative AI for creative purposes is obviously more evil, but use of AI like this doesn't really do anything to take away the baggage of how fucked the circumstances behind the LLM's creation are. The tool is still pretty filthy even when it isn't directly costing people jobs.

1

u/froli Ryzen 5 7600X | 7800 XT 8d ago

Frontier AI si scary good at decomping and recomping stuff now and that's exactly what emulators require.

27

u/EuropeMaxxing 8d ago

Because most of decomping is difficult but boring work. An agent doesn't care about boredom.

4

u/LivingUnglued 8d ago

It’s verifiable work so it’s easier to train the AIs on

1

u/10thDeadlySin 8d ago

It's also very well-paid work if you can do that, because it's a fairly rare skill set.

An agent doesn't care about salary, either. ;)

The same AI that makes PCs so expensive we can't buy them as console replacements anyway.

9

u/mujhe-sona-hai 8d ago

In a way though it's making your current pc last longer since nobody can afford the latest hardware anymore. Back in the early 2000's your shiny new PC would become hopelessly outdated in just 3 years due to how fast progress was then.

Tbf, you still need decent gpu and 32gb ram, prices of them have gone 3-5x due to ai even for ddr4, even sata ssd and hdd prices have gone up a lot and nvme is out of hand. PS5 console is either out of stock or costs 2-3x of what it should be after 6 year of its launch. I'd rather have actual cheap hardware and maybe even console itself with slow emulator progress over the years instead of this fking ai consuming all ram and storage in world

What really irks me about this sub is the fact that plenty of posters forget that there's more to personal computing than just gaming.

It's something you see all the time. 'Oh, but with Proton, this and that, Linux is actually good for gaming now, save for a bunch of kernel-level anti-cheat multiplayer games nobody cares about!'

Sure, I'm not going to claim otherwise. What about my thermal imaging camera, though? Is it going to be supported? I'm not even going to ask about SolidEdge, because that's cheating. Every once in a while I'll sit down and compose a tune. Are my Audio Imperia VSTs going to work fine on Linux?

I remember one post - somebody asked about gaming on a workstation-grade card and most people clowned on the OP, because who games on a Quadro? Some people seem to find it unfathomable that a PC can be used for something that has nothing to do with games.

Ai likely played a huge part of it but i also think that the release of GTA VI really motivated people to work on it with much more "passion". If it wasn't for GTA VI, i doubt that people would have cared that much. Maybe i'm wrong but that's my theory.

7

u/StopTheMeta2 8d ago

It's because the PS4/PS5 architecture is closer to that of PC's. The PS3 was extremely hard to reverse engineer and emulate, but people achieved that without AI.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/Alfa_Centauri03 8d ago

I'd also throw in Sony's decision to stop releasing physical games. Spite is a very powerful motivator.

5

u/XavinNydek PC Master Race 8d ago

I don't think many people actually care about physical games, if they did physical PS5 sales would be much higher than they are (about 15% and dropping fast).

What was a possible motivator is Sony's decision to stop releasing their exclusive on PC. If you can just get PC versions of all the PS5 games, which you can do to this point, there's really no reason for an emulator (unless you just really like Sony's awful UI I guess).

Not really. Most of the anti-AI hate on this sub was driven by increase in PC component prices. That increase is due to ALL uses of AI.

nah a lot of people seethe about any AI. People are actually criticizing medical advancements that will save lives because they were made with AI

6

u/mujhe-sona-hai 8d ago

Only young people in Western countries (especially America) seem to be vehemently anti AI. AI's got a pretty positive reputation in China and in my country for instance. It's probably because all the data centers to build AI is in the US and the costs get passed to the locals and since English is the language of the researchers and the internet it's completely filled up with slop while there's basically no "AI slop" in Hindi since AI is still so bad at it.

2

u/Quick_Society2794 8d ago

We all hate ai because much of what it is being used for is useless empty garbage.  AI has good real world applications, it's just not visibly being used that way and it's being forced into everything despite not being ready to be forced into everything.

1

u/SunGreene42 8d ago

AI is mostly a problem because of capitalism, in a socialist system it would be great, assuming it can't turn against us like all the sci-fi films, but I think all the problems with AI are problems just because of capitalism.
