MOD Announcement PICA (AKA “assault weapon ban”, “high capacity magazine ban”, AWB.) Information!

NEW PICA MEGA THREAD

Again please do not make “Is this gun legal post”

There are a lot of people in this sub giving good information but few I’ve seen giving wrong information. For all questions regarding PICA (AWB) and all the laws regarding it; please see the ISP website before asking questions in the sub. All information is available there.

All registration information is on the ISP website There will be a affidavit form released in October for those of you who are concerned with registration. Registration period is 10/01/23 - 1/01/24.

Those of us in the sub who are active will post lawsuit updates when they become available, you can also follow Freedom’s Steel on YouTube for updates. It’s unlikely this law will be struck down before January, we are all hopeful but be prepared to act accordingly if it is not.

Legal options are: •Sell all AWB guns to an FFL •Store all AWB guns out of state, Illinois has no legal authority over them then. •Register all AWB guns with the state when the registration becomes available. •Destroy all your AWB guns.

The below list has a flow chart at the end to determine if a gun is legal or not.

FOID/CCL FOID Suspended

So my FOID was suspended almost two years ago because of a nonsense criminal charge (passenger had drugs, I got a urinalysis and follicle test after getting out of jail because I’ve never used drugs).

I never surrendered my card or did an FDR. The police took both of my firearms at the scene.

The court stuff is finally over, and I should be able to get my card back.

What can/should I do?

Legal Questions Illinois Dangerous Weapons Question

For Halloween, my family is doing a Spartan theme, which includes helmets, armor, prop swords for the kids and real (not sharpened but definitely real) swords for my wife and I. My question: is it legal to carry a sword (in a sheath on my waist) while trick or treating? My wife (a life time Illinois resident) says it’s legal as long as you don’t carry it with the intent to use it unlawfully (720 ICLS 5/24-1). However, according to 720 ICLS 5/24-6, the law states that it is misdemeanor to “carry or possess a knife with a blade exceeding 3 inches on any land supported in part or whole by public funds,” which to me, would include public sidewalks. However, my wife says that “lands supported by public funds” does not apply to sidewalks that are not adjacent to government buildings or within 1000 feet of a school, government building or public park because if it did, people with valid CCL’s would not be allowed to carry guns on public sidewalks just as they’re not allowed to carry in public parks and government buildings, which we know is not the case.

Another thing is that the law specifically says “dangerous weapons or any instrument with a likeness thereof” which to me would include plastic prop swords as well but my wife argues that does not apply to plastic props.

What do you guys think? I would encourage any lawyers or LEO personnel to weigh in, but all responses and interpretations are welcome.

Thanks!

Gun Laws Pistols vs SBRs vs Rifles with PICA

Question of the day I was hoping to get thoughts on. Firstly, with SBR's not being regulated now, why haven't you gotten your 03 FFL to get one?

We know PICA restricts pistols with threaded barrels, anything protruding behind pistol grip, and pistols accepting magazines outside of the grip. The one benefit of pistols over rifles (for magazines anyway) is 15 rounds vs 10 rounds. However, once you convert that pistol into an SBR, shouldn't all those restrictions go away? So I could purchase an H&K SP5 pistol, for example, add a fixed stock and finned grip prior to transfer and be perfectly legal, right? But then do I have to use a 10 rd mag or is a 15 rd mag okay?

Then there's the thought that SBR's aren't TRULY rifles and therefore should be completely exempt from PICA anyway as there is no mention of them. Any legal opinions or hearsay on any of these matters?

We just got our hands on some Mec-Gar 15-round magazines for the Glock 17.

We know a lot of people have been looking for these, especially with the OEM 15-round magazines being so hard to come by.

If you need a couple, feel free to shoot us a message or contact us through our website, and we'll get you squared away!

Legal Questions Any IL C&R holders considering converting to SBR?

Post image
30 Upvotes

I'm a IL C&R holder with a PICA-registered semi-auto STEN (image is generic) with a barrel extension taking it to 16". With the ATF rule change for SBRs, I'm considering removing the plug-welds securing the barrel extension to restore the STEN to it's former non-anteater glory.

Does anyone else have similar plans with their >16" rifles? Any pitfalls or concerns you are considering?

Even outside of the new ATF rule change, have any IL C&R holders who obtained a SBR via their C&R had any issues or challenges?

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

NFA NFA Enforcement Changes

Crazy stuff from Robert Cekada at the ATF today. Essentially, unless you live in a state that requires you to comply with the NFA, like Illinois, the ATF has elected to no longer enforce the provisions of the NFA as they relate to short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and suppressors.

A very positive step forward at the federal level. Now we just need the states to follow suit.

General Post Optic Cut

Thumbnail youtube.com
14 Upvotes

hello everyone,

I'm just posting in here because we offer optic cuts, we're in Kankakee, and several Chicagoland people prefer to do drop offs and avoid the post office. I totally understand, and shipping delays are something I have to answer for quite often.

all jokes aside, we're listed on the Aimpoint website as an Aimpoint preferred optic cut vendor. we're licensed by holosun. we're signed with Agency Arms. we're subject to random tolerance audits to maintain preferred status.

if you choose us to do your optic cut, you can go to:

www.titan-tactical.com

www.commoncaliber.com

or even hit me up through reddit, discord, business Facebook, etc.

we charge the price that we do because we offer our "bulletproof warranty" on everything, which covers stripped threads or broken screws... I don't care how it happened, I'm going to fix it at no charge.

we also use and supply Grade 5 screws... every screw that leaves the shop was individually turned on a lathe, by me, with a jig that I made for this operation. I am the QC for EVERY individual screw that leaves the shop. Grade 5 screws hold tensile strength of 120,000 psi... if you're wondering why not Grade 8, the answer is that they are much more likely to be broken because Grade 8 is much less ductile than Grade 5, and I err on the side of caution. the difference in tensile strength goes from 120k to 150k psi, and I can't justify using more brittle screws for that.

here's a C&P from our Facebook.

it's Steve here,

sorry that I'm terrible with a camera, all my skill goes into machining. I feel like my poor camera/editing skills look less professional, but my tolerances have caught some notice.

if your optic cut has any slack or play in it, it's going to transfer the energy directly into the screws.

the screws are not meant to hold the optic as a buffer from the recoil, they're only meant to hold the optic directly in a downward clamping force.

we redesigned conventional optic cuts to be more secure with tighter tolerances.

this is why we're listed as 1 of 73 companies nationwide that are listed as an Aimpoint Preferred optic cut vendor. we're licensed by Holosun for all of their optic footprints. we're also THE VERY FIRST (and only) small time shop signed with Agency Arms... they also have the strictest QC tolerances, FYI.

stay tuned for the upcoming Agency Arms servicing through Titan Tactical LLC.

General Post October Classes

Just under two weeks until our Pistol & Rifle Clinic at the ISRA!

We also have a women-only Vehicle Defense course sponsored by our friends at Armed Women of America on October 31st.

These will likely be our last two classes of the year, with the exception of a CCL course coming in November. It’s been a pleasure training with a whole bunch of people from this sub throughout the year, and we appreciate everyone who has come out and trained with us.

Remember, alumni of both Common Caliber and Titan Tactical can use code COMMONCUSTOMER at checkout for 15% off any class.

General Post Flyer on lunchroom tables

These flyers appeared on the tables in the lunchroom next to fantasy football flyers. I thought it was an odd thing to be at a workplace but makes complete sense considering the owners and family are very religious. $300 for a crossbow? Seems like a good deal to me!

Weapon Question Shooting ranges in Illinois with an AUG for rent?

I am a gun lover/FUDD from evanston with hunter education training. I don't necessarily plan to buy a gun in the future, but even if I do I can't buy an AR in cook county. The gun I really want to try out the most is one of my favorite guns in video games: The Steyr AUG. It has been a bucket list dream of mine to try this puppy out, and feel how it really shoots, I even did a whole essay on it at school. Problem is, I can't find any good shooting range here that has one for rent. If you have any suggestions I would love to know.

General Post Gunsmith for Engraving?

My fiancee has (finally) agreed that a suitable engagement gift from her to me is a firearm. In order to make it more sentimental, she has agreed in principle to getting me a gun I want as long as it can be engraved with something personal.

Any recommendations for gunsmiths that can do custom engraving on stocks or barrels?

For reference, I’m thinking a classic wood stock hunting rifle or a revolver.

Thanks!

General Post What's your EDC?

I always see a lot of posts on here about getting a concealed carry license, waiting times, renewals, appeals, etc., but not nearly as much about people actually carrying or what they carry. This is a gun sub, so I figure we should see more guns on here.

Here’s a little bit of what I carry every day. The Glock 26 is probably my #1 and what I carry most often. It’s actually my last semi-auto without a red dot, but I’ll be sending it off soon for an A-CUT for an Aimpoint COA.

Every now and then I’ll carry the G19, and if I’m bumming around in sweats or basketball shorts, or wearing something like overalls that doesn’t give me a good spot for a gun, I’ll carry a J-frame.

The 360 PD is excellent for its weight, but it can suck to shoot, and the exposed hammer can get snagged on things. Because of that, I usually carry the 638 instead, but they’re both good guns.

Everything else is with me pretty much no matter what. Here's a breakdown of everything pictured.

Holsters — L to R

Harry’s Revolver Holster — This is a Gen 1, but it’s still probably my favorite snub holster.

Black Arch G26 Holster — Got this one secondhand. It's an actual G26 holster and not one that's marketed as a 26 holster but is actually a 19 holster.

Hellhound G19 Holster — These are excellent holsters. I also use their Apollo competition rig for both teaching and competition. They’re expensive, but worth it IMO.

Guns — L to R

S&W 638 — Hogue G10 grips.

S&W 360 PD — Altamont boot grips.

Glock 26 Gen 5 — Standard Co. trigger shoe and Trijicon irons.

Glock 19 Gen 5 — Slide cut and Cerakote by Landers Weapons Systems, Steiner MPS 1.0, Carry magwell, and Standard Co. trigger shoe.

Gear — L to R

NAR Tourniquet — I like the orange ones because they’re easy for other people to identify. Not everyone knows what a tourniquet is, but saying “go get the orange thing” is easy. This one stays on my person, but I keep extras in my first-aid kits, cars, bags, etc.

NeoMag Speed Strip Clip + Tuff Speed Strip — Nice way to keep extra .357/.38 on you with a much slimmer profile than a speedloader.

Gerber Multi-Tool

Samsung Earbuds

Ridge Wallet — I go back and forth between this and a Recycled Firefighter billfold.

Keys — I always like to have some kind of retention, whether it’s a clip or carabiner. KeySmart key organizer and a Zak Tool cuff key.

Knife — I have tons of folders. This one from CDC is nice, but I also rotate through Benchmades and others.

Ray-Ban Metas — I already wear prescription glasses, so these are nice to have. A lot of what I do at work involves both hands, so being able to take pictures hands-free, answer calls, or record myself shooting matches or instructing is extremely convenient.

Hellhound Spare Mag Carrier — G17 mag with a Taran Tactical +6. If I’m carrying a Glock, whether it’s the 26, 19, or something else, I always carry one of these since it’s compatible with all of the 9mm double-stacks.

What do you carry every day?

General Post Second Amendment “We The People”

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hello, this message is for “We The People” — Second Amendment supporters, firearms owners, and future firearms owners.
I don’t currently own any firearms. I’m 19 years old, and I simply wanted to share my opinions, thoughts, and concerns while spreading awareness and positivity.
As Americans, we have constitutional rights, including the Second Amendment — the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Many of us view this right as an important part of our freedom and our ability to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities.
I believe we should stand together and make our voices heard. We must speak up, show up, participate in our communities, vote, and support organizations and associations that advocate for the rights we believe in.
I unfortunately live in Illinois, where I feel that my Second Amendment rights have been heavily restricted and challenged. But this is something that can affect people in any state. Laws and policies can change, and protecting constitutional rights requires citizens to remain informed and engaged.
Whether you currently own a firearm, are interested in becoming a firearm owner someday, or simply believe in protecting constitutional rights, your voice matters.
Let’s stand together peacefully, stay informed, participate in the political process, and work to preserve our freedoms—not only for ourselves, but also for those who come after us.
We The People. 🇺🇸
Our rights. Our freedom. Our future.

General Post New gun burnout

I have been a gun enthusiast since I was a child. I never got into shooting before I was about 20 because my parents were weird about me liking guns. I am 36 now.

In the past, I would just walk into a gun store and buy a gun that appealed to me, based on aesthetic, or its features.

I have looked into a lot of older guns, and it seems like modern firearms are really cookie cutter.

I don’t want another striker fired wonder nine to add to the pile. I want something actually different and cool.

I guess I haven’t seen a gun that checks those boxes for me in quite awhile. Does anyone else feel this way? Living in IL of course limits our options even further.
