Hey y’all,
Figured since we have an FFL list I put up a while back we should have a range / club list too since we get questions every now and then.
Post any ranges you like to visit, include the below format if you’d like.
Name -
Location -
Indoor / outdoor -
Membership required? -
Full auto / FRT Friendly? -
Caliber restrictions (Ex, pistol only) -
Feel free to leave more / less info or any feedback if there’s anything that should be added.
Cheers!

Hey y'all,
After seeing some posts where we're recommending different shops, and posts of those asking for recommendations, I thought it may be a good idea to try and compile a list of NC FFLs.
Feel free to comment your preferred / local dealers, their location, and what you like about these places.
Thanks,
Barn.

To preface, obviously I’m not a lawyer, I just wanted to start a discussion with other people about this stuff on the hopes some smart fellers see and can contribute
I’ve seen a handful of discussions saying AOWs are exempt from NC’s definition of “weapons of mass destruction” and, therefore, do not have to be registered under the NFA, and I’d like to see what others think about the logic here
To preface, I just wanted to start out with the way the current situation is, to my knowledge; the NFA is not close to dead, and the only court-ordered action so far is for plaintiffs (GOA members, those buying from PSA, those who live in the district, etc.). Those who are not plaintiffs are able to get what they can because the ATF not enforcing registration for everybody. The way it seems, it is sort of like how weed is illegal federally still, but they do not enforce action against those states where it is legal. As such, it is why “compliance” in the state’s general statute means more than “4473 is compliance,” as the NFA exists, unchanged, still there, and to be considered legally owned as a “weapon of mass destruction” as defined in NC’s law, it has to be registered under the NFA, otherwise it is completely illegal to be owned by state law. Clear as mud because I cannot type well lmao. I think most of us know this by now, but I just wanted to provide some bit of pretext
Now for the AOW stuff:
NC § 14-288.8 defines what weapons fall into the category of “weapons of mass destruction,” as well as the exceptions to how they can be legally owned, where (b)(5) lies, saying “comply with NFA blah blah blah garbage.” The statute clearly defines rifles and sort of defines shotguns
I’ll just paste the two subsections for reading here:
“(c) The term "weapon of mass death and destruction" includes:
…(2) Any type of weapon (other than a shotgun or a shotgun shell of a type particularly suitable for sporting purposes) which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant, and which has any barrel with a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter; or
(3) Any firearm capable of fully automatic fire, any shotgun with a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length or an overall length of less than 26 inches, any rifle with a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length or an overall length of less than 26 inches, any muffler or silencer for any firearm, whether or not such firearm is included within this definition. For the purposes of this section, rifle is defined as a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder; or…”
Now is where it seems to get even more convoluted. We’ll start with rifle first, as irs the easiest. Obviously it just straight defines an SBR, I assume in full consistency with the NFA (I haven’t read the full NFA so I have no idea if it gets more specific and weird); if it can be shouldered and is short, rifle. which means short barreled rifle federally, and “weapon of mass destruction” by the statute, thus needing to meet compliance with the NFA to legally own in our state
Now, obviously, foregrip on pistol that was never considered a rifle—can’t be shouldered and is now an AOW, yes? It falls clear out of NC’s definition of “rifle,” as it is not intended, made, etc. to be fired from the shoulder. Since braces are not “intended” to be fired from the shoulder, AOW as far as I know. Good, legal to own at the state level, and now not being enforced federally. I don’t see why it would not be legal in the state without registration
Now shotguns and smooth bore firearm firing x. Boy oh boy
There is no clear definition of shotgun here like there is rifle. The closest we have is where it mentions being suitable for sport. That’s great, because weapons like the Shockwave are 12ga weapons, falling out of the definition of shotgun. Cut the barrel and you have an AOW, being exempt from the NFA while also beating state law, right? The problem is the fuckass last part of the sentence: “…and which has any barrel with a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter…” A converted AOW from a 12/16/18ga smooth bore firearm is above .5in diameter barrel bore. Then, obviously, shotgun defined as a shotgun while being under length requirements = SBS and “weapon of mass destruction” and register to be legal and so on.
It sounds dumb, but the kicker is in United States v. Tomlinson, 67 F.3d 508 (4th Cir. 1995). To my understanding in the reading, the state successfully argued that his Mossberg was not a shotgun, and instead a 12ga firearm that exceeded the bore limitations, thus being considered a “weapon of mass destruction” under NC law. It was later appealed, yes, but it was for a technicality in the courts or something and did not have anything to do with that decision, to my understanding. It was considered “not-a-shotgun” because it was not suitable for sporting purposes since it could not be accurately fired from the shoulder without a stock
“Well ok, if AOWs from smooth-bore firearms over a half inch are no go, how does the Shockwave and such exist?”
Interestingly enough, there was a letter by the state’s Attorney General in 2017: “…the weapon described is a weapon of mass death and destruction, but because it falls within an exception listed in N.C.G.S. 14-288.8(b)(5), its possession alone would not constitute a crime.” Shockwaves and similar are “weapons of mass destruction,” but since they fall out of the NFA (basically there is not a single federal law for them), the AG interpreted is as falling into (b)(5) (compliance with the NFA), whereas an AOW made from one would still technically fall into the NFA today since the NFA exists unchanged, meaning to fall into “compliance” at the state level, register
Two things to note, however—something like a .410 AOW also falls completely out of state definitions, from what I can tell, since, obviously, less than a half inch. Second, the interpretation argument there MAY lend some credence to an interpretation of “compliance” being 4473. However, we are comparing the Shockwave thing between a federal law that does not exist and the interpretation of state law in relation to federal law that DOES exist still, so I would not hold my breath for anything other than non-enforcement for now, especially given our AG’s previous statements on guns
All in all, that’s a lot to say, but I just wanted to throw it out there to spark discussion among people smarter than I am.
TL;DR:
To my understanding, AOWs from pistols seem okay, and from smooth bore firearms under one half inch bore barrel diameter are also okay, but anything one half inch and above are a grey area at best with supporting case law against them; let alone the language in the statute. At the end of the day, I’m sure the state can still decide to nail you on what they want or not on what they don’t regardless (shouldering brace, etc.)
At the end of the day, don’t ask don’t tell and who cares, but I like talking about it because it’s good to know what rules you’re breaking
The more I read, the more asinine our country’s and states’ gun laws are, fucking hell it’s ridiculous

I got a misdemeanor charge around 7 years ago for assault on a police officer (bar fight and we got tangled up). Do I have a chance to ever concealed carry again?

I was told in concealed carry class earlier this year that you have to notify police that you have a CHP even if you are not carrying a weapon, I even asked for clarification to make sure I didn't misunderstand what he said.
Are you guys doing this? I'm applying for mine this week and I guess I will do this until I'm explicitly told not to. Sounds kinda silly, and honestly had me on the fence of if I wanted to even go through with it. Other people I spoke with say they don't until they are asked for their license, and then they pass their permit along with their license. That makes sense in an automotive stop, but what about just out and about in public beyond a quick convo in passing? I suppose I will do as instructed in class, but curious if anyone else has been told this.

So with today’s ATF announcement, do we believe NC still be requiring buyers of suppressors, and SBS/SBRs to fill out a form 4 going forward? Hope not.

So I was involuntary committed at 10 and 12 years old. Today I'm 32 years old. And I've known since I was 25 or so about my IVC prohibition. However after a hiring a lawyer who originally was paid for doing a hearing. He chose to go a expungement route. And when the judge rejected it. He hid that rrom me until I requested the judges response. The judge litteraly told him in writing he had to do the petition. On top of that he had me go to the wrong type of psychiatrist for a evaluation that cost me over 1500 dollars. So I was approved by my sheriff to buy 3 different handguns that I still have since 2018. However I just gave on it, because I didn't know any other lawyer at the time who could help. Plus I didn't feel like wasting thousands of more dollars. I haven't committed a crime of violence or a victim crime ever. I do have a dismissed expunged drug possession charge from 2012. And fictitious license plate dismissed. That was my license plate from one vehicle, that I installed on a 30 year old truck I was test driving while some repairs on it. I still have the three handguns. And yet I never received a call from my local sherrif to turn them in. Yet she's the one who approved me to the permits. I did my 4473 on all three of them and was able to walk out with a sig p320, s&w shield and bodyguard on three different occasions. But got denied twice when trying to purchase a 10/22 for plinking. My lawyer couldn't explain to me why this happened.

Hey all, with the mods' OK, I'm looking for beta testers for The Bolt Hound, a classifieds 2A marketplace built specifically for NC and SC. I'm a local NC gun owner and firearms enthusiast, and building this solo because I personally want a simplified place to BST without bloat.
What I'm looking for:
- NC or SC residents, 21+
- People who buy, sell, or trade locally
- Willing to poke around, try to break things, and tell me honestly what's annoying
What you get:
- Early access before public launch
- A permanent Beta Tester badge on your profile
- Direct input on features, using the feedback page on the site
Apply here: thebolthound.com/beta
It takes about 2 minutes. The application asks only for a few fields, and I don't share or sell it. Invites go out in small waves from support@thebolthound.com, so keep an eye on your spam folder.
Happy to answer questions in the comments.

I’m 19 and a Florida resident driving through NC. I legally own a handgun that was gifted to me by my mom. I don’t have a concealed carry permit.
I have a hard-sided lockbox and would like to keep the handgun secured underneath my driver’s seat while traveling. Would that be legal in NC at 19, or would the locked box still be considered carrying a concealed handgun “about my person” under G.S. 14-269?
If not, where/how would I need to store it while driving through NC? My mom really wants me to have it for my safety, but I don’t want to get into trouble for it

Edit: I'm retaining https://williamslawonline.com/
Before anyone recommends Ron Shook who frequents this sub- I've already spoken to him and have kept him up to date on my journey, he is truly awesome. He gave me his time then refused payment. Unfortunately I'm too far out of range for him to handle my matters.
I need an attorney to help confirm that I'm safe to possess a firearm in the state, but my situation is "uncharted" grounds in North Carolina. I am one of the lucky few participating in the early invite/beta test of the federal firearm rights restoration program (https://justice.gov/ffrr). My federal civil rights attorney does not practice in NC, where I live.
I'm approaching somewhat uncharted grounds in North Carolina. I had a WA State felony that was vacated by the sentencing court, the plea was withdrawn and the indictment was dismissed. My official WSP background check is clean, the WA courts say I have no conviction in the state.
I had a federal case, which does not seem to have a "substantially similar" charge in North Carolina and may not qualify as a felony under the NC Felony Firearms Act.
To be on the safe side, my 925(c) application includes both cases.
My concerns are: 1) Does NC consider my vacated case a conviction? 2) Does NC consider my federal case a felony in regards to the NC felony firearm act? 3) Will NC honor my grant of relief under 925(c)? 4) Once relief is granted, am I safe to possess a firearm?
I'm ready and able to retain an attorney, but I'm struggling to find one. Most hear "federal" or "Washington" and reply "we only handle NC cases". I have retained amazing WA and Federal attorneys that are handling those aspects. I only need assistance on the NC side of things.
Any referrals would be appreciated.

Need to get a barrel chopped down soon. Preferably around Hillsborough if possible. Thanks
I have an AR Pistol I’m looking to get rid of. I got offered $300 from Hyatt and I understand I’m going to take a loss on it but that’s practically giving it away. Unfortunately Armslist hasn’t worked out and neither has tacswap. New to the area so if anyone has off loaded a gun to a store I’d love your recommendations. I’m trying to sell to get another edc so any help is appreciated!

Super excited to get this moving for the Carolina firearms community.
The Bolt Hound is a Carolinas-focused online classifieds marketplace built to make local buying and selling simple and clear. Designed specifically for users in North and South Carolina, it offers a cleaner, more modern alternative to traditional forum-classifieds hybrids with an emphasis on local connections and an easy-to-use experience.
Soon I’ll be looking for people to test out the website and provide feedback!

Hey everyone! I’m looking for a place in the Durham/Chapel Hill/Raleigh(or within a hour drive) area where I could legally shoot on private land.
I’m hoping to find somewhere that:
- Allows target shooting with the landowner’s permission
- Doesn’t have the typical indoor/public-range caliber restrictions
- Has a safe setup/backstop suitable for rifle and handgun shooting
- Would potentially allow me to come out occasionally rather than needing a formal range membership
I’m obviously willing to follow any rules the landowner has regarding safety, hours, cleanup, etc. I’m not looking for anyone to give me unrestricted access to their property—just trying to find out if there are legitimate private ranges, clubs, or landowners around the Triangle(or within a hour drive) who allow this.
If you know of somewhere or have a lead, I’d really appreciate a DM. Thanks!
