Asking older women about their deceased husbands is like playing Russian roulette
If she's 70+, it's either going to be the most quaint, heart-warming story you've ever heard, or she's about to start listing crimes. He either gave her a flower when they were 4 years old, and they stayed together for 60 years, OR he purchased her from her father when she was 14 and he was 32.There's no in-between. The craziest part is no matter which one you get, they speak about it in the same cutesy way. It's bizarre how they'll fondly reminisce about the time he walked 7 miles just to buy her favorite tea in the exact same tone they use to tell you about the time he committed 4 counts of assault after the Steelers lost. They have a charming nostalgia about him either way. The conversations are always something like:

That really caught my attention! I'll never forget when he asked me on our first date. He said "I can either take you to prom or send you to hell. What's it gonna be?". That's when I knew he was the one."
Me:"... Okay... Edith, did you report that to anybody? It seems a little...strange."
Her:"Yeah, I told the police, but they assured me that I was just having my period.I know he could be a little stern, but that's my Harold".
Me: ...
