News/Article “Nobody wants Copilot”: Microsoft pauses Copilot on Windows 11’s taskbar to “incorporate your feedback," as Microslop backlash continues

Literally the only time I activate that shit is when I accidentally hit the key they installed on my keyboard.

That's more elegant than my solution, which was to pop the key cap off with a butter knife.

You can use PowerToys from the Microsoft store just permanently remap the key to a different function.

I just buy mechanical keyboards - so the whole key switch can be removed, and then my keyboard has a pirate smile. Which makes me laugh, so I don't actually fix it.
Remapping would be prettier, but sometimes, I just wanna be a pirate, ya know?

Ah yes, nobody wants the shitty AI that can't even keep conversation context across 2 messages ... I wonder why.
User: Hey, what does this error code mean? <error code>
Copilot: It means this and that. You should do this and that.
User: Ok, I did this and that but it didn't work, what now?
Copilot: It seems like you are having problems with your Code. Please send me the error code so I can help you.
User: I literally send you the error code 2 messages ago!
Copilot: Ah, you're right. It means this and that. You should do this and that.
User: I already did that.

It'd be impossible to run locally otherwise.
All modern chatbots can't do memory at all. When you send a message, the back end has to send them the entire conversation, which they need to process in its entirety, before responding. This quickly becomes a very heavy processing load, but they are utterly useless if this isn't done.

Sort of, they use sliding windows now. It keeps your conversation history warm, so it does have context slip when the context is massive but doesn't need to re-scan the entire conversation history again.

u/PickledPaste 7d ago
This has actually been solved by prompt caching. Claude launched it in late 24 and everyone has copied. It basically scans the prompt for exact matches from prior prompts in the session and pulls the preprocessed memory in. Very helpful for agentic else you would be reading agents.md all the damn time
4
u/mrjackspade 7d ago
Claude launched it in late 24 and everyone has copied
Claude's prompt caching was predated by Llama.cpp's prompt caching. Anthropic was implementing something that was already well spread through the ecosystem at the time and it's remarkable it took them as long as it did.

“Make it work better.”
Pretty much why I don’t use AI, outside of the terrible impact of it. Whenever I end up resorting to checking to see if AI can solve whatever problem I’m having, it either very clearly and quickly doesn’t, or I get sucked into correcting it over and over as a sunk cost fallacy until it spits out the thing I need, which takes basically the same amount of time as it’d take me to do it myself.

I'm a heavy user of an unlimited Claude budget at work, but otherwise have been a pretty light user in my personal life, Opus 5.5 finally made me cave and buy a sub this month, its probably the first model where I'm actually impressed on average by what it can do and how it reasons, and its nowhere near as sycophantic as the older models. I got my first big boy coding gig working for a Fortune 100 company. On my first day, the IT Director introduced me to the team. Everyone seemed nice enough. We passed by a private office where an older guy was sitting smoking a cigarette and reading the newspaper. "This is Jerry. He designed the system you're going to be working on. If you have any questions you can go to Jerry because he knows the system inside and out."
I was seated in my cubicle and a couple of team members came by to give me the lay of the land. One of them said that Jerry was friends with the Director and he was being paid a lot of money as a consultant but he really didn't know the system so it was pointless to ask him anything.
I think it was my second day on the job when I ran an option from a menu and it immediately crashed:
Array index error in table INVEN22
I walked over to Jerry's office. He was puffing away and was reading the newspaper just like before. I asked him to come over to my terminal to help me diagnose the problem. He let out a big sigh and walked over to my cube. He looked at the screen and said "There's an array index error in table INVEN22"
And then Jerry turned and walked away.
Jerry was the first CoPilot.

Yeah, "here's what I'm trying to do; fix this function" is a lot quicker and easier than "Google it, scroll past the irritating YouTube results, and hope someone in a forum a) asked the question, b) had the question successfully answered, and c) isn't blocked by my company's IT policy or behind a paywall."

The assistant on my phone would set an alarm for me immediately and it worked well, so they replaced it with gemini which takes at least 10 seconds to understand what I'm even saying to it. It will eventually set the alarm, after talking to me way, way too much.
→ More replies (4)7
u/MrDeeJayy Ryzen 7 5700X | AMD RX 6700 XT | DDR4-3200 32GB 7d ago
Yours is setting alarms? I had my assistant working perfectly fine with Home Assistant, and controlling all the lights in my house. One particular one my brother decided he'd name after his online persona, which is ambiguously pronounced.
The old assistant would have no issues listening to "Ok google, turn on <names> light", rain hail or shine it'd turn on the light in under 2 seconds.
Now with Gemini, I have to
- Be very VERY explicit about pronouncing the name of lights with an over-pronounced american accent (I'm australian, i have to pronounce "shah-nah" as "shay-nah" and things like that or it'll completely misunderstand me)
- Have my phone unlocked (yeah, apparently gemini cant touch a bedroom light unless you unlock your phone. The old assistant never had this issue)
- Pray that it actually understands what is being said to it. Most of the time it "doesnt understand" or acts like it has no connection to any smart home shit (including the one light that's setup directly on google home instead of via home assistant).
And specifically regarding alarms, its a crap shoot on whether it will set the alarm, or just tell me it set an alarm but in reality it "encountered an error" and won't say anything, instead confirming with complete confidence that the alarm was set, even when it wasn't.
Honestly, a complete and utter downgrade.

It's infuriating that they couldn't let us keep assistant as an option. But they need to tell their investors about the 200% increase in consumers opening their AI Slopware.
Your story is so aggravating. My Google home mini speaker stopped working after a software update and they don't make that model any more. Of course the new one costs four times what I paid for the Home Mini. It's all a crock of shit. I have so much contempt for this system I just got rid of the stupid fucking smart lights and smart speakers and I don't miss them.

5
u/fightingthefuckits 7d ago
I'm decent in Excel but if I can explain what I want it's often quicker at writing it than me, or, it can take a while working it out but I can do other things while it does. I've used it for doing mass formatting, for creating summary tabs linked to multiple other tabs. Basically, it's really good for stuff that is just busy work. It's also great for explaining formulas, so, if someone gives you a workbook and you're trying to decipher what they're trying to do, it can explain it pretty quickly.

If I want to use AI I want it to be contained in 1 program that I choose to open and use.
This having it integrated into everything is getting ridiculous.
I don't use AI but I still want to be able to if I ever need to. I just don't want it all over the place and forced on me.
6
u/Envy661 MRInvidian 6d ago
Its not a tool made fo general consumers. Its an enterprise tool that only AI tech bros actually care about, and should be on enterprise versions of the OS only. Otherwise, keep it confined to one place and let people use it if they want, or uninstall it if they don't. A lot like Cortana. The more MS forces users to do things, the more people will find workarounds to not have to.

The problem is the economy is fucked.
The "customer" to Microsoft isn't really the users of their software. Its the Shareholders.
And Shareholders are drunk on this AI idea
So if Microsoft wants "customers" they need to sell to shareholders that their AI offering is growing. More users! More usage! More! Look at our growth
But its all fucked. They drive out the consumer. But shareholders are still fucking giddy. How?!
Because the economy is fucked! Its circular logic. They're all in on AI because the AI bubble is booming. If you invest your money elsewhere you're leaving money on the table. Why make 5% growth when you can make 10%?! When will the bubble pop? Who knows, but until then there's riches! Risk assessement? NOT IN MY HOUSE! CHOOCHOO
Like I don't consider myself an investment expert. I'm young, but not that young, and when I talk to economic folk about how fucked the risk on investment in America is right now they literally just shrug and tell me "well its the biggest market still". It is increasingly feeling like there's no adults in the room anymore.

They should have just made it an app, with the options in the app to integrate it into other apps like Office.
I use the Claude app, use AI in VSCode etc… but I like to specifically pick what I install and how I like to use it.
Obviously they would be sued either way as including your own AI is like including Internet Explorer as default as the anti competitive nature of that.

Well that’s it really, they wanted to force AI into everything and then have people use AI rather than existing tools to operate their computer.
Then when people are too far in they start charging a monthly subscription much the way Office went.
Businesses overnight would be screwed, facing new monthly costs they would find hard to avoid.

I'm not paying AI inflated prices on a new computer just so Microsoft's AI can exist on my machine (I'd disable all AI functions anyway).

I miss when things were kept the same way for a long time. Like Windows XP and 7, they were the same thing for a long time. I mean, they still are. Nowadays, things change everyday, you wake up the next day and there're a dozen of new things, I didnt even had the time to learn or use the "old" things. I feel so overloaded.
9
u/tekanet 7d ago
I just don’t have the time needed to understand things. Part of that is due to me being older, but when I started working an OS was updated every few years, a program once a year. Now every day I open Claude Code CLI or Visual Studio Code and they have an update. I feel overloaded too, I just can’t read the changes let alone understand and test them.

They also are going to respond to states. Multiple major European countries have already executed or are in the process of switching away from Microsoft products for all public sector usage. That's not minor. Every branch of their install base has some portion of it that is concerned or upset about things MS is doing; they can't just pretend it's not happening and be indifferent to it if they intend to continue having their services be used. You don't stay on top by doing nothing.

3
u/Dick_Nation There's nothing to see here. 7d ago
It's pretty likely, yes. The average consumer user is just using an OEM install of Windows and a minute fraction of those users are paying an additional fee for OneDrive, or Office, or something along those lines. Meanwhile, corporate customers are paying licensing for entire fleets at once, with a bunch of redundancies and backups, and full product suites to be used by every employee. When I was running a Windows machine, I paid a Windows license once, and declined to use a single other Microsoft service. Meanwhile, I worked for multiple employers during that time that had us using Outlook, Excel, Word, Publisher, OneNote, and so on. Losing me as a home consumer to Linux will be a rounding error on their books, but dropping an entire organization of thousands of licenses, that's an annoyance.

Yes and no. The cause and effect isn't necessarily "I use windows at work so I'll use windows at home" especially now every app is basically a web page. If people start using linux at home, they start commenting "oh this would be less frustrating if we were running linux" and suddenly the need to run windows starts to disappear, may as well use whatever Microslop app your company demands you use in a browser on linux at that point
6
u/Lashay_Sombra 7d ago
They are not really scared of Linux on desktops, people have been saying it will take over for 30 years yet its never really got above 4% on desktops
If they start seeing high general usage (it not the IT students) in collages (how apple got its foot in the door) they might get concerned but until then they will not care

If there was a version of Windows that only had the Windows features I actually use, it'd just be the start menu, File Explorer and the legacy control panel.

I feel like this must be why Swiftkey feels like it's gotten worse recently. It feels like it didn't have nearly this much trouble guessing what I wanted to write before this year. And it's also another place where they've tried to shove copilot.

It's also not because people don't want AI, Copilot is just shit.

As soon as I updated to 26H2 I ran the Chris Titus script and cleaned it up again.

I'd like to think all those times I told it to kill itself actually made a difference.

They told me my hardware was trash and would no longer be supported. I looked at current prices for gaming PC's. I decided running bazzite would serve my needs.
Wont be coming back.

For edge an update enabled some kind of predictive text which was annoying cause I can touch type and trying to complete sentences was so distracting.
After I disabled it it asked for feedback which I was gonna do but it wanted info I did not want to provide.

AI has some really powerful and interesting uses as a tool when deployed in specific, controlled ways.
The 'everything machine' these companies are trying to make it be by injecting shit like Copilot into everything is the opposite of how AI should be used.

They should put it behind a paywall because companies will suck dick for AI, sadly.
For us normal people no we dont wanna

I tried CoPilot for troubleshooting a local Windows issue which you'd think would be its bread an butter. Complete waste of time.

Nobody wants "Muse" or whatever Facebook's bullshit is, either. No matter how much they spend advertising it on Reddit.

My workplace is SUPER pro AI.
So much so that the management level right above me is mandated to use AI to write emails for them.
Its crazy to me.

And I like using Copilot if you know how to use it. But Microsoft messed up the Android app, where the new version has such limits that people are leaving it. You practically can’t send any files anymore, connect to OneDrive on the account, only PDF for reading can be sent, and even that has issues. I’m staying on the old copilot version, already with the grey icon and the legacy label because it’s almost abandoned. For now it still works and I don’t have the limits the newer version has, so I’ll use it until they disconnect it completely. Then I’ll think about which AI to use for my work.
