It'd be impossible to run locally otherwise.

All modern chatbots can't do memory at all. When you send a message, the back end has to send them the entire conversation, which they need to process in its entirety, before responding. This quickly becomes a very heavy processing load, but they are utterly useless if this isn't done.

Sort of, they use sliding windows now. It keeps your conversation history warm, so it does have context slip when the context is massive but doesn't need to re-scan the entire conversation history again.

Nobody is using sliding windows and haven't for years. They do compaction. Get too much context, write a summary and continue.

This has actually been solved by prompt caching. Claude launched it in late 24 and everyone has copied. It basically scans the prompt for exact matches from prior prompts in the session and pulls the preprocessed memory in. Very helpful for agentic else you would be reading agents.md all the damn time

Claude's prompt caching was predated by Llama.cpp's prompt caching. Anthropic was implementing something that was already well spread through the ecosystem at the time and it's remarkable it took them as long as it did.

What the hell are you talking about?

I can run local models that have like 200k context. The biggest ones online have 1 million+ and memory to handle it for bigger stuff.

Co-pilot is shit, thats why nobody uses it.

This is fair but including the button, the additional (often reserved) hardware and the pricetag to match on modern machines and phones is their fault.

I was trying to access the NNAPI on my Pixel phone for a native android app and there's apparently no way into that for third parties (and even if there was, this thing is barely capable of holding 2 apps in RAM, getting better token throughput on a 500M Q2 model is kinda pointless).

People tried local AI and now think all AI sucks, meanwhile real cloud agents are sadly life-changingly amazing and coming to a blood-sucking job-stealing subscription near you, powered by the hardware you could have bought to actually run these yourself but that was hoarded by corporations to hold you hostage to the service industry as you get priced out.

And while we waste time claiming this is just a temporary buzz or phase, real people are losing real jobs and much, much worse is coming. Entire industries are gonna disappear. Computer security is in grave danger in general as the mass of badly security systems is now easy prey to reverse engineering and one-prompt hacking. Privacy is dying under mass surveillance that can finally work like dystopian movies had warned us about, but we never had the tools to go through with before. This is a worldwide emergency situation, one we can actually come out of with higher living standards, short work weeks, more worker rights, but we all know we won't.
