Only use it have found for it was in Excel. Makes it easier to find functions

u/Mantergeistmann 7d ago

Yeah, "here's what I'm trying to do; fix this function" is a lot quicker and easier than "Google it, scroll past the irritating YouTube results, and hope someone in a forum a) asked the question, b) had the question successfully answered, and c) isn't blocked by my company's IT policy or behind a paywall."

That's the issue I have - they made LLMs more valuable by making traditional internet search engines unusable.

The assistant on my phone would set an alarm for me immediately and it worked well, so they replaced it with gemini which takes at least 10 seconds to understand what I'm even saying to it. It will eventually set the alarm, after talking to me way, way too much.

Yours is setting alarms? I had my assistant working perfectly fine with Home Assistant, and controlling all the lights in my house. One particular one my brother decided he'd name after his online persona, which is ambiguously pronounced.

The old assistant would have no issues listening to "Ok google, turn on <names> light", rain hail or shine it'd turn on the light in under 2 seconds.

Now with Gemini, I have to

- Be very VERY explicit about pronouncing the name of lights with an over-pronounced american accent (I'm australian, i have to pronounce "shah-nah" as "shay-nah" and things like that or it'll completely misunderstand me)

  • Have my phone unlocked (yeah, apparently gemini cant touch a bedroom light unless you unlock your phone. The old assistant never had this issue)
  • Pray that it actually understands what is being said to it. Most of the time it "doesnt understand" or acts like it has no connection to any smart home shit (including the one light that's setup directly on google home instead of via home assistant).

And specifically regarding alarms, its a crap shoot on whether it will set the alarm, or just tell me it set an alarm but in reality it "encountered an error" and won't say anything, instead confirming with complete confidence that the alarm was set, even when it wasn't.

Honestly, a complete and utter downgrade.

It's infuriating that they couldn't let us keep assistant as an option. But they need to tell their investors about the 200% increase in consumers opening their AI Slopware.

Your story is so aggravating. My Google home mini speaker stopped working after a software update and they don't make that model any more. Of course the new one costs four times what I paid for the Home Mini. It's all a crock of shit. I have so much contempt for this system I just got rid of the stupid fucking smart lights and smart speakers and I don't miss them.

oh they'd be lovely if i could get them to reliably work with home assistant.

I just need a better way to be able to turn them on. I'm thinking of going back to the clapper.

u/zgillet i7 12700K ~ PNY RTX 5070 12GB OC ~ 32 GB DDR5 RAM 6d ago

The damn clapper was more convenient. At least Alexa is still working for me on lights.

3

u/HystericalSail 6d ago

That was my solution, moving to Alexa. At least that home robot just got a minor lobotomy, not a full-on slop makeover. They still expect you to pay for that downgrade, for now.

Oh man, how good was Google Now and the assistant thing, you could shout at it "Hey Google, set a fifteen minute timer" while your hands were covered in flour and batter and it would just work.

Now it doesnt. And it listens when you dont want it to.

2

u/Tripwiring 7d ago

Exactly! It simply doesn't work any more at all. And new speakers cost $150 because they discontinued the $40 mini speakers and intentionally broke existing ones with an update. Why would I want to buy one of these useless bricks after being subjected to this shit?

They enshitified google home, Alexa, and all the others to the point where I don't have anything left except for one "working" mini speaker in my kitchen that I connect Spotify to myself. I don't even bother talking to it any more.

Its all garbage.

Amazon alexa has also turned to shit, I suppose they want us paying for an AI upgrade or something. Either that or they just diverted all the processing power to some other AI task like suggesting the wrong products on their website.

1

u/PipsqueakPilot 7d ago

You're absolutely right. It should be easier to set an alarm. Anyway, I set it for the wrong time and that's on me.

Search engines were going to shit long before llms came about. YouTube search is fucking god awful

u/aVarangian 13600kf 7900xtx 2160 | 6600k 1070 1440 7d ago

tbh google had been becoming shit already before LLMs showed up

2

u/merc08 7d ago

Google was working on their "AI" before they made it public.

tbf everyone works on new stuff for a while before making it public

I have found LLMs synthesise answers without exposing me to the ads on all these web pages. About 60-70% accurate first run research, without the ads.

That's the issue everyone has. It's called "Plan A" within the industry.

noai.duckduckgo.com is giving me the best search results I’ve gotten since before Google and rest enshittified themselves.

I use DDG as well, but they need to allow blocking of more than 5 sites from results. They have added a report button for AI generated sites though, so maybe that was enough.

My issue is that LLM’s shed all cognitive load. Why bother to learn anything when you can just get an LLM to do it for you? Why learn how to research and critically review when llm can spew? Why learn how to code a new language when llm can spew? We are going to have serious problems as a society as cognitive load collectively gets shed

pretty much what i use chatgpt for is a glorified google search

"Just fix it" is a great way to learn absolutely nothing. Every single time you use Excel, you'll be begging the robot for help. Much better to invest a little time and learn every time you get stuck.

Guess I've been using Excel too long, as I know the capabilities of the damn thing by heart at this point.

3

u/fightingthefuckits 7d ago

I'm decent in Excel but if I can explain what I want it's often quicker at writing it than me, or, it can take a while working it out but I can do other things while it does. I've used it for doing mass formatting, for creating summary tabs linked to multiple other tabs. Basically, it's really good for stuff that is just busy work. It's also great for explaining formulas, so, if someone gives you a workbook and you're trying to decipher what they're trying to do, it can explain it pretty quickly.

I mean sure, but we also don’t need ai to do any of that and it ima have to go back and check its work anyway id rather just do it right the first time myself lmao

“Find functions”? I’m using it to make
complex dashboards, project trackers and just to analyze the data. It’s incredible what it cansoc

I don’t mind Copilot summaries of a giant email thread I was added to.

Especially when the end result is “not my fucking problem”.

1

u/Fluid-Sink-2514 6d ago

Reminds me of a standup comedian’s bit I saw recently where he uses ai to compose emails at work because he wasn’t sounding professional. He would write an email to the software team saying “Hey fuckers! Write more code!” And ai would tell him it’s not executive sounding, would he like it to rewrite the email to sound more executive? Yeah! Then he sends it to the software team, who sees the extremely verbose email and decides to feed it into ai for a summary which reads “Hey fuckers! Write more code!”

And you just take its word for it? These things lie constantly. Try using it for anything that you know about, something you know what the right answer should be. You'll see it's just flat out wrong at least 20% of the time.

1

u/BigHowski 7d ago

I'm suprised, I develop in a Microsoft buisness application and it can even give me code that compiles half the time

1

u/-xXpurplypunkXx- 7d ago

Excel and Powerpoint Copilot has been good. I think because the basic functionality is so opaque within each.

Reformatting slides, moving data from one source to another, string conditional logic etc. has become very easy.

1

u/bauul 7d ago

Honestly the integration into PPT and Excel (and Gemini into the Google equivalents) feel like a genuinely decent use-case. Especially for big tedious tasks that would otherwise need VBA or TypeScript

1

u/writesCommentsHigh 7d ago

Run codex or Claude code or other harnesses and they can read your local folders. No microslop needed besides excel ..: and windows if you’re unfortunate enough to have to work on it

You can integrate claude into excel instead though. Legit no point to copilot
