Unskippable ad I keep getting threatening texts

I get these ALL the time. I’ve never donated to these “people.” Never supported them. Never voted for them. Nor has my wife. I received four of these today. All threats. Always a telling me it’s my last chance. These are some of the less malicious-sounding ones.

I’m not even sure they’re legitimately from those parties, though I wouldn’t put it past them.

So… report as spam. Report as spam. Report as spam.

It isn’t like it’s painful. Just pretty irritating.

Mark it as spam. If you reply stop, it verifies that your phone number is active

u/Lock_Psychological 19d ago

I’ve reported it… probably 100+ times.

you cant block them. its a new number every time.

193

u/Informal-Comb1989 19d ago

Yeah they spoof numbers and cycle them

32

u/chknboy 19d ago

You could report a number to the IC3 website, they specialize crimes related to fraud and unauthorized contact. I did this to spam callers all coming from the same first 6 digits of the phone number, and I never got a call from them again.

oh, okay. thank you for the info.

u/KevinFlantier 19d ago

That is why you never answer spam calls.

The usual pipeline is :

There is a leak, let's say from your ISP, where they get your phone number as well as your name, maybe your address, your email and some banking info. That list is HOT and costs millions on the dark web.

It will be sold, and those who bought it will immediately spam you in order to

1) verify that the phone number is active

2) try to phish more info by posing as an electricity company / ISP / bank

3) try to scam you into draining your bank account.

But by the time they do that, the list is becoming stale, so they make up a smaller list out of all the people that have answered and that are confirmed to be active, or better yet those who slipped and gave information on themselves. And those lists are endlessly sold again and again. The more you answer, the more you get spammed. Even reading the text is an indication that they should send more spam.

44

u/hottestdoge 19d ago

That's how they did it ages ago. Most spam call centers just dial every number. They set a number range and then go down this list numerically.

59

u/KevinFlantier 19d ago

I have been in multiple major leaks over the last two years and I've noticed a massive increase in spam calls a month or so after the leak every time. And by massive I mean going from 1-2 spam calls daily to over a dozen, with five or so SMS to boot, calling me by name or trying to pass as my bank. They do buy leaked lists.

7

u/Slysparrow9 19d ago

Interesting. I like never get spam calls but I also never answer the phone. I guess years and years of not answering the phone unless I know and want to talk to someone has paid off. Same with texts. If I open it and it seems suspicious, I mark it as unread and report

They sell it as an active “real” number. And you get more spam.

Probably why OP can’t get rid of these spam texts. OP probably replied to a spam text in the past and their number got registered and sold as an active number.

25

u/Oh_Cosmos 19d ago

okay, but even inactive numbers were once active, right? so how the hell do we get off that list? just wait?

If you have an iPhone go to

and turn on the message filter setting. Anything that is a promo, spam, or unknown sender is separated from your regular messages.

19

u/mmwhatchasaiyan 19d ago

This didn’t stop mine. It filters a few, but I regularly (like daily) get ones to mine inbox that say shit like “DEMS PASS BILL TO ALLOW ILLEGALS TO MOVE IN WITH YOUR SISTER” or whatever tf they’re on about. It’s obnoxious. I report and block every. Single. Day.

Neither works. I get similar texts but from legit Dem organizations. The problem is you're telling one of 1,000 to stop. Reporting spam does nothing, as your phone can't recognize any pattern among the texts and the carriers can't actually block political nonprofits.

182

u/SuzQP 19d ago

Welcome to the ActBlue Hellhole. I gave a hundred bucks to Talarico and ActBlue sold my number to every Democrat in the world and each of them is sending beggar-texts on the regular. It is so obnoxious and intrusive I'm not donating anymore.

Somebody at the DNC needs a fucking heads up; this has got to be hurting them financially. Everyone I know is fucking pissed off at this level of harassment.

yeah I donated a few years ago to some ActBlue stuff and I get frequent spam texts. It's annoying.

Somebody I know is helping an elderly person with dementia, and saw their money was being drained by outfits like ActBlue. Lots of little payments every month that added up. The helper thinks this was at least partly due to the checkbox thing: they thought they were donating once, but missed the checkbox that defaults to monthly instead of one-time donation.

Additionally, the person with dementia was getting so much mail (both email and paper) from Democratic causes and happily sending in money, after all $15 isn't that much right? You give once, they spam you with more begging. Now the person with dementia is in a residential facility. The helper collects their mail and discards reams of begging letters.

I'd heard about that with Republican stuff before, I'm ashamed Democrats are doing it too. Taking advantage of the elderly.

If you have a profile on ActBlue, go on there and remove your phone number. I have been trying to stop being buried in political texts for months and finally figured out all the campaigns are getting my number from ActBlue. I took it off and the texts have slowed to a trickle.

26

u/Money-Computer7638 19d ago

Thanks for this glimmer of hope....

5

u/SaintsNoah14 19d ago

Will have to check this. My cousin in another state that shares only a last name with me is getting messages for me

21

u/GravitationalEddie 19d ago edited 19d ago

Replying STOP tells a single campaign to stop using your number as a campaigning contact. Sending in a Statement of Residence with no phone number is more likely to help. Campaigns have access to your contact info on your voter registration. You can't stop the mail, but you can stop calls and texts.

17

u/Lock_Psychological 19d ago

I’ve done that as well. It doesn’t stop.

→ More replies (4)

10

u/Sunder_ 19d ago

So there's not much you can do about the texts, but I've noticed the texts go away when you deal with the calls. For phone calls, you answer, mute, and put the phone down till they hang up. It probaby flags some kinda of time wasting measure or they flag it as a dead number because there's no response. Slowly they remove your number from the list, and said list is likely tied to texts as well.

27

u/Hizam5 19d ago

Never reply STOP, that’s for sure; I agree. But the spam never stops with these no matter how many times you report it. And when/if they do stop, another one just takes its place

I was getting bombarded by texts saying “hi it’s claire, im an arborist working in your neighborhood. Let us know if you need your trees cut” about twice a day for all of July and August. Those have stopped but in its place are calls saying they’re the IRS and want to help me pay my taxes (I have spam block so they just leave voicemails). I block each one and new number calls me 4 hours later.

The most ironic and non believable part is it always says the “US Internal Revenue Service” is calling me from somewhere in Canada 😂

9

u/Xaphnir 19d ago edited 19d ago

In my experience replying stop does actually get them to stop for a little bit. Before I tried it I had an endless barrage for something like 2-3 years despite not replying a single time and just blocking and deleting the number every time. Not replying to them will not make them stop.

If I had to guess, they have some way to tell that your phone number is active simply from the fact that you received the text.

Voter intimidation is a felony.
Report it.

491

u/Lock_Psychological 19d ago

Oh… I’m sure they’ll claim they were just giving me one last chance to send them money.

282

u/Suspicious-Coach-644 19d ago

They can claim it sure but threatening language to secure votes is still a felony.

195

u/Lock_Psychological 19d ago

True, but…
1. For all I know it isn’t really them. Just some other scammers.
2. If it’s them, they’ll hide behind equivocation.
3. Either way, they don’t get into trouble. They never do. Trouble is for people like you and me.

166

u/No_Ocelot_2285 19d ago

The reason they don’t get in trouble is because people like you and me let them. Start with something simple like this, and then find the next thing you can do, and then the next.

Absolutely real. They have drained the bank accounts of his supporters with constant threats like this since 2016. Terrible for their mental health and grasp on reality as well.

23

u/Brave_Maybe_2891 19d ago

My wife is one of the people that bought a ticket to his rally so his supporters couldn't get a seat and she got texts like this for a few months until she blocked them. They were usually claiming that she was personally selected by Trump or she was in a small group personally selected by Trump. They would claim that he had a personal message just for her from Trump if she donated a few bucks.

18

u/Itchy_Tumbleweed_417 19d ago

Oh it’s totally real. Do you remember when TikTok ruined one of his rallies by signing up for a ticket and then not going?

I don’t remember if I was part of that or the very next one, all I know is he was supposed to have a rally about an hour from me so I got a ticket, planning not to go, and he ended up canceling because of the weather. It was a perfect 70° day.

Anyway I don’t remember how many years ago that was but I still get emails from him and my inbox that I used for spam stuff looks exactly like that

They stopped texting me after I started replying to the text about the Epstein files. Human beings actually get those replies so I guess they figured they should unsubscribe me since me trying wasn’t working.

They are always so threatening. I wish I saved the last one I got but it was something like this.

“PRESIDENT TRUMP knows you haven’t responded and he is making a list. Respond now and match the donations of other FREEDOM fighters in your area or stay on the list FOREVER.

YOU do not want to be on the wrong side of HISTORY when 2028 comes.”

It’s always so weird that they capitalize random letters like it adds some sort of urgency to the threats.

19

u/PatricksMustache 19d ago

My father gets 15-20 of these texts per DAY, but it's his own fault for responding to/donating to various "Republican candidates" (via the candidate website links in the emails they sent him, and his credit card info was *somehow* stolen six months later). The bigger problem is that he's finally so fed up with it he just leaves his phone on the night stand and on silent all the time now. So not only is it hard to get him when he's at home in the living room watching his Fox News, we have no way of finding out or finding/tracking him if his 84-year-old ass leaves the house somewhere and something happens.

I joined a political messaging session once a few years ago. (I forget what cause exactly, it was either reproductive rights or voting rights in Michigan.) There were a handful of us on a Zoom call; we ran a messaging app that used a VOIP phone number, and texted a template message en masse to our lists, about 20 at a time. We then monitored the replies for a time so we could talk back live to anyone who answered immediately.

We had been instructed on how to reply to hostile messages. "Fuck off" or reply like this was an immediate removal. So it's possible, if you replied within a half an hour or so, that you had a real person reading your reply and responding accordingly.

It had a boldened sentence about abortion being the number 1 cause of death in my state. Abortions have been totally outlawed in my state for almost 5 years. The leading causes of death are heart disease & cancer. In fact, heart disease and cancer make up over 50% of all deaths in my state.

Throughout the brochure there’s a dozen sentences thrown in to guilt trip about murdering babies and bible verses “proving” we’re all going to hell for every abortion performed in our state. I’ve never supported anything like MAGA. I’m a social worker in a deep red state in a city that’s been neglected for decades.

I've never voted R. I've never registered R. Every week lately I'm dumping a fistful of conservative propaganda from my mailbox into the recycling. They don't care what you're registered as.

I've gotten the same threatening texts, and I've never registered or voted R. This is an attempt at vote manipulation and intimidation, not unlike the disgusting mass texts minorities got right after Trump was re-elected telling them to get into various colored vans to be taken to reeducation centers. Someone is out there mass spam texting people, and their intentions are not good.

Okay bozo. Not one person in history has felt threatened by JD Vance. 😂

Oh, I don’t feel threatened. I do worry he might steal my wife’s eye liner.

That’ll make her angry.

And you wouldn’t like her when she’s angry.

I've occasionally received texts like this from the Trump campaign, and it's an interesting look into the psychology of the average Republican.

u/Lord_Lorden 19d ago

I mean they need the fear of eternal damnation just to make "moral" decisions. Kinda tells you all you need to know about a person if they need religion to direct their morality.

Most likely phishing attempt to hack your phone.

65

u/SuzieDerpkins 19d ago

It’s a scam. You’re on some data list. This one is clearly targeting gullible Trump voters.

25

u/Lock_Psychological 19d ago

And apparently people who never have and never would vote for him.

Well… that’s not entirely true. I’d vote him most likely to soil his pants in public.

During our last federal election in Australia, the Trumpet of Patriots party spent $60 million AUD on a texting campaign. It was the first time a political party attempted a texting campaign and it netted the party a total of ZERO seats.

More info, for those who want to point and laugh.

Show us the vicious ones, this is reddit, we love that shit

u/FormerFastCat 19d ago

You know if you respond with "Fuck off" It auto unsubscribes you right?

53

u/doublelxp 19d ago

Just block the number and report it as spam. Never respond to an unsolicited text.

19

u/Aiming4UrFace 19d ago

I've been getting the same texts and I just reply fuck you and it unsubscribes me. However I still get upwards of 3 a day

Wait until the never-ending parade of scams when you turn 60! I block them, I report them, they just switch to a new number within minutes.

u/Prestigious_Pop_7381 19d ago

I hate political season, since when did I ok all these fools try to fear monger my phone.  There’s enough of there bs on tv all day

12

u/JacoRamone 19d ago

Don’t reply at all. Delete and report as spam.

15

u/Sonamdrukpa 19d ago

Yeah they don't give a shit what you think about politics

6

u/Sneaky-Reasons 19d ago

Yes I agree with you. I got one the other day that said “now is the time! Tell us what side you’re really on. Give us $10 to prove your alliance to democrats and keep us in this country” and then the same link style. I wasn’t answering the Republican ones so they switched to Democrat now I guess 😂

Under normal circumstances, I would call this a lazy and obvious false flag campaign.

Given what I've seen actual elected officials say on their verified social media or TV, I don't know what to think.

Delete, report spam. Don’t reply stop or fuck you or anything.

These things are hydras. You reply stop, they stop, but they sell your info to 3 other places that start spamming you instead. Better to avoid interacting entirely.

39

u/neophenx 19d ago

I'm not saying this is the BEST way to deal with them by any stretch of the imagination, but I tend to reply to them with an image of something that would probably be widely considered very uncomfortable content. Something like a drawing of a very weirdly drawn female enderman or creeper from minecraft, or some classic "seduce the dragon" shenanigans.

21

u/phishinfordory 19d ago

Any response at all is a verification of your phone number. Your best bet is to ignore it and reported a spam.

As soon as you click that link you’ll be fucked. Don’t do it. Never click any link! I had one from my banks fraud dept 5 years ago and ended up having to close my account & didn’t have access to my money, while on vacation, for days until I opened a new account at home. I also had to get my phone wiped bc they put spyware on it & could remote control my phone! Never click any links! Let the scammers stay mad

8

u/AutoGrind 19d ago

Give us the number

15

u/ripnrun285 19d ago

Honestly this seems like an obvious scam, but our government is currently running the biggest scam in the history of the country.. so I can’t even call it, anymore. Smfh.

22

u/NerdfestZyx 19d ago

This is either a phishing scam, or they want your voter info to remove your name because they believe you will vote blue

7

u/KingZombiKiller 19d ago

I got very similar ones but they worded it like they were breaking life changing news to me. I just told them to go fuck themselves and ended up getting a human response from someone named Jay

Scammers really be getting angry lately. They act like it's their constitutional right to scam you and you're at fault if you don't respond.
