READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. Yes, this means you. READ THIS FIRST, V6 - How to avoid the Flair of Shame and eternal ridicule
So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.
If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.
If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.
What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.
If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.
CORE GUIDES:
- The sub's official FAQ/WIKI, as curated by the community as a whole.
- Need help picking scope rings? The official Longrange guide to scope ring height (ring)
- Looking at buying a magnum (300WM or PRC, 6.5PRC, 7mm PRC, 338 Lapua, etc) as your first LR rifle? Hollywood's recoil primer - why magnums suck for starting in long range, recoil matters, and it's not about your shoulder (magnum or recoil)
- Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
- The official r/Longrange glossary - because words mean things (glossary)
- LockyBalboaPrime's First Time buyer's guide for rifles V2 (starter)
- JMhawaii's long range starter guide (Link to Google Sheets) (starter)
- Trollygag's 1k yard starter guide (starter)
- Where are ranges or long ranges near me? - Wheretoshoot.org and over600.com (ranges)
- The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please review before asking hunting-related questions, as hunting is not the core purpose of this sub. (hunting)
The 4 key questions:
- What do you want to do/buy, and WHY? - Do you want to buy a rifle for PRS competition? Picking a laser rangefinder for NRL Hunter matches? Looking at scopes for F-Class competition? A tripod because you think they're cool and want to have one when banging steel with friends? What you're planning to do has a lot of influence on what works well, what works poorly, and what is an utter waste of time, so the more detail you can provide the better.
- How far away do you want to do it/what do you want to use it for? - 300 yards? 1,000? 2,000? Distance matters, 'nuff said.
- How much are you willing to spend to do it? What's your budget in currency? Your idea of "on a budget" isn't going to be the same as everyone else's. Saying your budget is unlimited for a laser rangefinder may change when someone suggests one that costs over $10,000. We need to know how much you're willing to spend. It can be a hard limit, a range, or even an approximate - but you need to give a number.
- How much experience do you currently have with it? - Jumping straight into a 375 Cheytac rifle to shoot 2 miles isn't going to go well if you have never shot a rifle past 300. We need at least a basic idea of what your relevant skill level is in order to give advice and suggestions that go with your skill set. While including your experience with other shooting disciplines is helpful, it's not going to be as relevant as most new shooters expect. You can love shooting 10ga slugs all day long from a shotgun, but it doesn't mean starting off with a magnum is a good idea.
When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.

If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.
We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

Reloading related LRHT 144s - Partial Pack?
Does anyone have a source for small packs of Berger LRHT .264 144gr's? I've been buying small packs to test ammo from SubMOAshooting, but they don't seem to have that size avilable. I've been wanting to try a small run of those guys to test on my rifle.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Read the wiki and... still looking for guidance. ARC CDG vs Zermätt something? For loooooong term.
Wife has taken my Bergara b14 in 6.5 (she does love hot cheetos). so I guess Im using this as an opportunity to go a different route than off the shelf but want to stay in the R700 realm.
I want to do a short action and a long action. Short action for 6.5 to keep for myself, and a long action for something less than 300winmag. Leaning toward 7PRC currently.
Is there a good reason to not go with Origin to save money?
For 7PRC I dont see why a medium or thick tang would be bad, nor why I wouldnt want an integrated recoil lug, thus bringing me to SR3/TL3 or CDG instead of the origin.
My biggest concern realistically is longevity of parts support. My state has already passed laws that wil make purchases in the future much more of a hassle, and so the two actions will be what I plan to be my last purchases. If SCOTUS addresses the laws they've passed then ill consider purchasing again in the future.... but that seems like a distant and nearly nonexistent hope.
And last, between the Zermatts and the CDG, which would be easiest for me to rebarrel in my garage? I want to use shouldered prefits so I dont have to deal with headspacing and barrel nuts and shit. So im just assuming the process is gonna end up being the same between the two lol.
Edit: after much hard thinking, I think i will go Zermatt after all. Since this will be the last platform and firearm purchase i make, perhaps in my life, since it doesnt look like the wife will OK us moving to a different state anytime soon or ever. The reason ill go zermatt is that rather than just getting a short and a long action, ill get a short medium and long action. All origin actions to make the finances balance out. So while I may not use the medium action much, i have it just in case the firearms space evolves. Because, again, the laws going into effect here. Im looking to have my gun purchases done forever before April 2027.
Thank you all for your help thus far! (And if my wife gets jealous, ill get her CDG. Because if you cant make a decision, getting all of them solves it all lmao)

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts Arken LH4 4-16 question
Long story short, I was recently given an Arken LH4 4-16 MIL from a buddy who’s had it sitting for quite some time. Putting it on a 16” 6ARC.
My question, I’ve heard very mixed reviews about Arken. So wondering if I keep this optic and run with it, or do I sell it (I know they aren’t worth much) and upgrade to something a little better. Main use case is coyote hunting, anywhere from 1-300yds. I’ll occasionally shoot at the range where I have steel out to 800yds. I mainly dial my scopes vs use the holdovers, have heard mixed reviews of Arkens tracking.
So figure I’d come here and see if anyone has some reps behind it. Thanks in advance!

Rimfire 10/22 as a trainer
I know that it is ideal if it is 22lr bolt rifle, but can we use 10/22 for long range practice? I have a 10/22 takedown and currently it has just a reddot but if I put a power optic shouldn't I be able to use it for long range practice up to 200m?

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Barrel Length
Looking for some general advice. Building a 6.5 PRC which will strictly be used for range and maybe some PRS competitions. I'm having barrels made with Bartlein and using a Terminus Zeus action with an MDT chassis. Question is what length of barrel would be recommended? The barrel blanks are 32" and seeing as it is strictly for long range use I was thinking of keeping it at 28".

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts What do alpha tier optics sell for used?
I'm upgrading my PRS optic. My budget is $3200. I can swing maybe a few hundred more, but that's it. At that price I was thinking I could get my hands on a used ZC527 or maybe even a ZC840, but I can't even find used ones for sale. What are the chances that if I hang in there long enough something will show up in my budget? I don't mind waiting, I just don't want to pass up on a refurbished G3 if there's zero chance a ZCo is going to pop up in my budget. Aside from AA Optics and SH, is there anywhere else I can look?

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts Where can I learn to use reticles?
I've read the pinned posts but I cannot find anything that teaches me how use use the different (and especially my) reticle.
I have a GPO Centuri 4-16x44i C OPMOD scope with a PLRi reticle.
I will be taking a class to learn to shoot out to 600 yds. I need to have it sighted in @100 yds before the class. I'm not worried about that. I want to know how to use the reticle from my 100 yd zero, out to 600. I don't want to be the limp dick in the class holding everyone else up. If I have questions I want them to be intelligent.
How much? NA, the money has been spent.
I have only shot at 200 yds, many years ago, in NRA High Power matches with iron sights (M1 Garand).

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Does suppressor choice matter for accuracy?
I'm putting together a precision 6.5 creedmoor gas gun, LMT with probably a proof barrel, and I'm trying to decide on a suppressor.
I'd love something with the lowest back pressure I can get (to make tuning easier or not necessary, and to avoid gas to the face), but huxwrx cans kind of suck. This got me looking at the various options (I'm wide open to suggestions), and wondering if suppressor choice affects accuracy, or if they're all pretty much the same in that regard?
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts 22 Creed Action
Hello,
To preface this, I have never assembled a custom bolt action. I have assembled numerous ar’s but I’m wanting to do a custom 22 creed.
I am honestly overwhelmed by all the choices of actions and barrels available. I’m wanting something semi light weight as this is gonna be a dedicated thermal rifle that I want to lug around. What would be the best action/barrel combo?
Thanks guys, I’m new and don’t have too much of an idea of what I’m doing yet😅

Ammo help needed - I read the pinned posts Looking for caliber suggestions
Would like to plan out my first custom bolt action build and am looking for caliber suggestions. This build is not for PRS or hunting either necessarily. Mainly it will be a nice “plinker” I plan to shoot at a max of 1000yds at a local range.
My priorities are having a round that performs well out of a shorter 16”-18” barrel, low recoil so the missus will shoot it too, magazine fed, and not a barrel burner. I plan to have the barrel profiled for a reflex style suppressor and would prefer to not make that a frequent expense. I’ll also be reloading for this if that changes anything. And lastly, parts availability/compatibility as far as being able to find pre fit barrels, actions with the appropriate bolt face, mags, reloading supplies, etc. Hope I’m not asking for too much.
My initial thought is 6 ARC would probably fit the bill but looking for any recommendations. Any help is appreciated!
Edit: I don’t expect everyone to understand my goal or vision for this build and that’s fine. I am just trying to make a fun plinker build and purely am looking for any caliber suggestions if there are any that might perform decent out of a shorter barrel. This is not a competition gun at all. I have no intention of using a barrel longer than 16” or 18”. I am fully aware that more barrel means more performance. I am just looking for caliber advice for this idea.

Accessory/Gear help needed - I read the pinned post Accutac BR4 vs FD4
Building out my dream custom rifle and going to outfit her with her own bipod. Currently running a jazzed-up Harris, which I’m very fond of, but would like to get something a little different.
Have narrowed my choices down to the Accutac BR4 or the FD4. Bipod will be used for PRS, so the fast deployment mechanism of the FD4 is attractive, but I also really like the fact that you can deploy the legs of the BR4 at 45 degrees (not possible with the FD4). I lean slightly towards the BR4 for that reason (and have had my hands on one before), but wanted to see if anyone had experience playing with both of them that can offer their opinions. Does the lack of fast-deployment actually hinder anyone’s game? Is the 45-degrees leg setting something that sounds good, but doesn’t really get used?

Cheeto-fingered Bergara You Cheeto Fingered Poors Got Me
No pics because it looks like the bizillion B14 HMR posted here. Have access to club steel to 1500 yds, several lanes to 800. I’m at 200 now with an AR15. Once I decided on 6.5CM I started looking at semi. DD then Noveske. Guy at one of the ranges convinced me to go bolt action by suggesting I add a different action to the collection. Looked at a Barrett MRAD then a Tika then ended up back at Cheeto.
B14 HMR, “demo” Strike Eagle FFP 3-18x44 ($540, brand new, known dealer), Atlas bipod, for now a Q Speakeasy/Cherry Bomb from my 300 BLK SBR or the Lahar 30K on it previously. I want to work out past 500 before I dedicate a can. Perhaps a TBAC. A goal for nothing else to motivate me to learn quicker and stick with it. Everything I own except my VP9CC EDC has a can. Pistols too. More pleasurable to shoot that way.
Looking forward to learning a new disciple and firearm type. And getting more flair of shame.

RANT MDT Availability in UK
Anyone shed some light on why MDT stocks are so low in the uk and also why some companies are charging extortionate prices when they do get them in stock
for exampl bagnallandkirkwood charge £407 then livens will charge £335..
and does anyone know any US companies that ship to uk ? ie stocks ?
