I'm single by choice and someone who leans heavily toward introversion and deals with both hyper-awareness and social anxiety. In general, I feel like I am merely existing and have these walls up that are so damn high that even I can't break through them. I'm in my head a lot and often think about how I come across to people. I pick up on energy and notice things most people probably don't. To an outsider, I likely look independent, confident, and put together, but me putting up that front is just a way I've learned to protect myself.
I've arrived at this strange place in life where no one that I know will keep in touch unless I message first or they want something from me. Even when I do make an effort to reach out to someone, the conversation usually doesn't last very long, and there's no interest shown to connect offline. Some people are quick to say they have to go, while others engage in emotional dumping and then go silent... makes you feel like that's all you're good for. I haven't even hung out with a non-family member in over two years, and that person lives in the U.S. (I'm in Canada).
I have family and people I can talk to both online and in person, along with a personal writing page on social media of over 20k, but there's no one I'm close to. Seeing that number all the time just feeds into the loneliness, too, and I've scaled back on my social media usage because of how polished and filtered everything is. I also grew up in a household where positivity and encouragement were foreign things, and I have two older siblings (brother and sister) who are pretty much absent from my life. There's this internal void that I can't seem to fill no matter how much I focus on myself and the things I'm working toward, both personally and professionally. It's something that's been there since I was younger. I've gone through the majority of life as a chameleon, someone who can maneuver their way socially and adapt to different personalities and environments but doesn't really belong anywhere.
Over the years, I've been wronged more times than I'd like to admit: been intentionally led on before, got caught up in the wrong circles, compromised my values to fit in, and often accepted scraps from people to avoid being alone. Eventually, it all caught up to me, and one day, I stopped being that person who was constantly there for others or willing to open their door to just anyone. I found myself reevaluating the few so-called friendships I had and made changes as a result. And even though it meant disconnection, I don't regret it, because I'm more at home in my own body and realized that I deserve better.
I feel left behind, like I'm starting over at an age where I should probably have everything figured out. It's become incredibly difficult for me to put myself out there and find my people. It's like part of me has shut down and lost the ability to connect, while the other part expects to be rejected due to past conditioning. I don't open up easily at first, and I imagine there's something about the way I carry myself that gives people the impression I'm uninterested even though it's the opposite. The only place I can realistically see myself making a new friend is at the gym I go to. I haven't been going consistently enough, though, and I need to work on that. Gaining weight and being out of shape, after working out consistently for years, just makes everything feel worse.
