Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

I got these photos 3rd hand so it’s all I have to work with. Someone I know is considering it as a purchase, (seller’s asking $350), and I’ve no clue what the actual value would be. Trying to help the dude out.

I personally love the thing.

Thank you!

Sometimes, all you need is a bike and a trail 🌿🚲

There’s something special about leaving the busy roads behind and getting lost in the quiet of the forest. 🌲

Just me, my bike, and a trail waiting to be explored. No rush, no noise — just fresh air and peace of mind.

These are the rides that remind me why I fell in love with cycling. ❤️🚲

What do you prefer: peaceful forest trails or long open-road rides?

The kids love it when a cyclist stops and makes a big deal out of it.

Even better if you are with a large group. Sometimes the parents come out to see what all the commotion is about. My friends and I hoot and holler as we ride away and make it memorable for everyone.

I stopped for the one pictured yesterday. $2 for a cup. I gave them a $5.

I know that the warm weather is winding down in the northern hemisphere but keep it in mind for next year. Be generous. It makes their day.

Need help!

Waaay out of my element here so I’m very thankful to have found y’all’s community. Hopefully you can see what the issue is in the video; sometimes the tensioner doesn’t want to pull back on the chain, causing slack and then it jumps off. What do I need to do?

Looking for a good road/commuting bike, are my standards realistic?

• Upvotes

I want something for commuting or just to ride on weekends, I hate maintenance so I want something single speed, rim brakes, but also around $150😬, I also don’t want used

Riding in my town. Motorist decided that they wanted to be on the other side of the median. To be clear, I don't think this was meant out of any kind of malice towards cyclists. I think the driver was inattentive. But still, first time I've seen something like this...

Huffy Tune up, handlebar diameter question.

Hi,

I'm tuning up a 1995 Huffy BackWater, and have so far have gotten about 5 speeds out of the 18 gear Shimano. I realize once you get it stable, *don't use the front derailleur. New seat, new brake pads, easy. I put some new handlebar grips on it and noticed they were a bit longer than the original foam grips. Has anyone used those handlebar extensions by Control Tech or FMFXTR?.

The reason I'm asking is because these products say 22mm diameter, and It looks like the inside handlebar is a little less than that. Of course, I have twisted on the new grips so I can't measure exactly now. Probably have to take them off to get the extenders on *anyway. Does anyone know the specs of the inside diameter of the old Huffys? Also I'm considering using some oak dowel rod and glue, why not.

Second hand Triban RC520, good deal and what to look out for?

Hi!

I have been in contact with someone to buy a second-hand Triban RC520 bike. It is the version with a Shimano 105 groupset and semi-hydraulic disc brakes, and I have an agreement to buy it for 350 euros.

Does this seem like a decent deal? And what are things I should look out for when buying it? I've heard that you should check the chain at the big ring to see whether it is loose or not. The bike does seem like it was used quite a bit (or they may be old SPD pedals)?

Talk me out of buying a woom WOW balance bike

Someone talk me out of buy my child a $200 woom WOW balance bike. We say one at the store and my child LOVED it. She can't even walk yet but was having the time of her life. Is it worth it? Just good marketing? Radio Flyer steady start for $50 really doesn't look THAT different? Thoughts, experiences, opinions?

Came from a speedy vintage mtb build and wanted something chill to commute to work and do tours with. I spent days looking at bikes online and since i'm a US bike brands loving german, i had to get it. A bit rare to find between the mainstream brands like cube or bulls. I'm thinking after i've worn down the tyres i'll give it some tan walls (schwalbe fat franks probably) and thats it for add ons for now.

Looking forward to many years with it!

Recently learned how to bike. I mastered the balancing aspect but the starting pedal as boost I find difficult. I also want to try u turns and bike in a straight way. My hands shake way too much and I'm sensitive to road bumps which ruins my control. any advice ?

First bike

Hey everyone, I wanted to get a nice bike for just riding around town chillin. I’ve done some research and it seems like a hybrid bike’s best for me. I wanna go second hand as it seems best for the value and I’m thinking about spending around 400 dollars. As of now I’m looking into the Trek FX2 or Cannondale quick 3/4.
I know there’s probably so much more bikes out there so I’m asking for recommendations. I also don’t know much about sizes or what to look out for when buying used and all that stuff. I’m really new to this lol. Thanks🙏

But how can I lift up my bike seat? Nothing near that I’ve pulled either way will move, do I need a tool to lift it? Or is there something I’m missing
