r/BABike Official Bike Tag Rules

I'd like to thank everyone who voted on the poll regarding use of public transit when carrying the tag from one location to another. The ayes won the day on the question and the resulting rule has been added to the rules below that I copied from the Chicago biking subreddit.

\Moving forward, please link this post on the Bike Tag Rules link when posting the new mystery location. Also note that I have added language regarding a requirement to post photos directly to Reddit rather than using hosting sites like imgur or others.*

BIKE TAG GAME

This is a game that r/BikingATX plays, that was then adopted by r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by r/chibike! that was then adopted by us at r/BAbike!

Credit goes to u/america_yall of r/BikingATX for starting the game.

THE GAME

A game of "Tag" wherein the player who is "IT" posts a picture of their bike at a "mystery location." Someone must find that location, bike there and take a picture of their bike in the same spot. They may then bike somewhere else and take a picture of their bike in this new "mystery location." Both pictures are posted in a self-post and the game starts over.

HOW TO PLAY

  • You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.
  • Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.
  • Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."
  • Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!

HINTS/CLUES

  • Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.
  • If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.
  • Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.

THE RULES

  • Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.
  • Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.
  • Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).
  • Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride. Given the difficulty of cycling across the Bay in the northern region, limited use of public transporation is acceptable if carrying a tag across. This public transit is confined to:
    • Treasure Island Ferry
    • Bart between Embarcadero and West Oakland Stations
    • Bus bridge between San Rafael and Richmond
  • Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time directly to Reddit rather than hosting sites like Imgur.

Help build a User-Contributed Routes Library!

Hey folks! I'm really thrilled to say that I was recently granted access as a mod on this sub for the sole purpose of building out a user-contributed routes library for anyone looking for new rides in their area or a new part of the Bay Area they're looking to explore. I love this sub and hopefully can make a positive contribution through that.

I am currently working on a subreddit wiki that will host this library and would like to ask your help in that. The first ask is if you use a linked route and enjoyed it, feel free to reply to the comment with that link and tag me in that reply. (e.g "Hey u/inquisitab, you might want to add this route to the library!") I'd like to include routes that folks have ridden since there would be some confirmation of the route's rideability.

A couple of notes about contributing routes:

  • RidewithGPS routes are preferred but Strava routes are out due to inaccessibility to non-paying users. I believe Garmin routes are accessible since I've shared those before with success.

EDIT: Strava routes are accessible and fine to share. Not sure where I’d heard they weren’t. * Please share whether it is a road, gravel or MTB route. I am building libraries for each discipline and it would make it easier for me if it was clearly labeled. * If you share a route you created, be sure that it isn't starting at your house unless you would like folks gathering on your driveway! Choose a public location that is generally used by cyclists for the start of their routes (e.g Java Hut in Fairfax). * I will generally be adding loops unless there are out and backs that are better than any looping options. * The routes will be categorized by starting city so please feel free to share in your comment tagging me where it starts.

Any tips for using Lyft Bikes to and from the King Street Caltrain Station

I live in the Outer Richmond and just got a new job where I could be taking Caltrain to work. Getting all the way across the city would be like 70% of my commute time on the bus so I've been trying out the Lyft Bikes. Does anyone have strong opinions about how well that could work?

I've got a station with good availability near my house (been testing it out just for rides around town/stalking it in the mornings). I'm fine with biking and have a helmet already.

I think my biggest concern is how many bikes are at the Caltrain station around 6PM, is it a total ghost town or would I probably be OK? EBike would definitely be preferred but I'm good with old bikes too, especially if I can just ride to a more full station a ways down my route home.

Anything else I should know or anything I don't seem to be considering that I should be? I do have a car for rainy days so backup plans are already in place too.

Thanks!

Film crew on Skyline above Windy Hill

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Climbed Page Mill and headed north on Skyline. The Highway Patrol had Skyline closed just south of the Windy Hill overlook. Assumed it was road construction or some such. But when they released the traffic, it looked like someone was setting up for a party of some sort; tables and chairs with tarps for the sun and lots of catering trucks. A little further on, I saw why: a big film crew with countless trucks and equipment and people, using the extraordinary view of the bay as a backdrop. Shame it was so hazy. Anyone know of any filming in town? Could it be more Ted Danson sightings?

PSA- AAA roadside service will now pick you up if your bike breaks down

They’ve offered this service in other parts of the country; however, not here in California up until recently, now that they are merging their operations for a larger western AAA organization. Here’s the link for more information.

Skyline watershed ridge trail dead end

Post image
30 Upvotes

I know the trail is not fully open, took it to avoid going up the sketchy part of skyline. Looks like at the end all the gates are locked, plus it has more barbed wire fences than a prison.

Is there any information on when we'll be able to use it to bike all the way to Kings mountain?

are they going to try to connect it to the other skyline trails, Sawyer camp etc, or are we f*d having to bike up and down the dangerous 92/skyline sections?

New Bike App for learning/teaching explaining gears

Riding in the bay area has led me down the rabbit hole of loving gravel and climbs - and trying to understand what really matters in a good climbing bike. This led to a passion project - a site for learning about gearing and comparing gear sets.

This isn't a commercial site - and it's still a prototype - but if you want to take a look - Gears Explained | BikesExplained

It has some nice animations and eventually will more of a teaching tool. But for now - a great place to compare drivetrains. Comments and suggestions appreciated.

Edit: Updated the app as of 10/15/26 at 4:43

This guy (Michael Vandeman) attacks mountain bikers in the East Bay Hills (he has been convicted for it). Please consider leaving a negative review on his Amazon book page ('Frequently Asked Questions about Mountain Biking - why MTBing should be prohibited')

Does anybody have a good century ride from Santa Cruz to San Jose or anywhere starting in San Jose. I want to do a route that someone has done before and not start something where I end up lost lol. Thank you!

Who has done the Sea Otter Classic Fuego XC? Would love to get takes on the course difficulty

Trying to better understand the level of technical difficulty around the Sea Otter Classic Fuego XC course. I'm a competent rider and just getting into MTB races. All of my riding is in the east bay hills (basically Tilden and Chabot) and I don't shy away from good climbing. I had a great time at EBDC and am looking for something else to train for. From the course description, it seems fairly similar to EBDC in some respects, except for the "infamous sandy climbs". Can anyone who has done the Sea Otter shed light on exactly how it compares? What is the breadth of ability/fitness level at the race itself?

Looking for BIPOC gravel homies in Oakland / east bay

Hey yall! Looking to make some friends with other riders of color in the east bay. I’ve done various group rides but sometimes it’s just nicer to have a smaller squad, y’know? I ride all up and down east bay hills from wildcat to chabot. Love to get sendy 🤙🏽 hmu if you wanna ride! Trying to get more consistent and do a couple of 20~ mile rides during the week and a longer 40-60 mile ride on the weekend. Down to get out to Marin or even the peninsula or SJ on the weekends!

I’ve gotta back in to ripping around in the Hardtail. But what do you guys think should be the ride for Rockcobbler?

STOLEN — BOLO My Red Trek FX2 in SF

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hey bike friends, my red Trek FX2 was stolen outside of Rainbow Grocery in SF, Sunday, October 11, between 230p and 3p. Thieves cut the lock.

Thieves may also have my KASK hi-vis orange helmet. Ugh, sickening.

I have the serial number in case you see someone with it.

Alright-it's finally happening now-Bikeshare Everest Attempt at Twin Peaks starting today at 6 PM

Semi-live progress will be posted here: https://bs-on-bikeshare.com/

It's only 1.25 miles-between Cole Valley (MUNI Tunnel at Carl and Cole) and Twin Peaks up Clayton St. I'm aiming for roughly 22 minutes per interval and 56 intervals total. My hope is to finish well under 24 hours but we will see how it goes:

I may post some updates throughout the ride on my personal Instagram, otherwise most content will probably be next week: https://www.instagram.com/42apples/

Bike fit OPEN WEEKENDS

I need to get my bike fit as I am having pain/ saddle issues. I cannot seem to find a place that is open on the weekends in the South Bay (calling that within 20 miles of San Jose). I know there have been tons of threads about fit reccomemdations, and all of these places have hours like Tuesday through Thursday, 1 to 4 PM.

At this point I am not even looking for the best bike fit, I am looking for a place that does bike fitting on Saturday or Sundays somewhere in the South Bay.

Around the bay century

Hello!

I’m planning to ride a century around the bay. Does anyone have suggestions for good restaurant/cafes along the way? Big plus if they have outdoor seating for groups or just a general good vibe/not a chain.

Any route tips? I’m mostly just planning to follow the bay trail but if you have any info I may miss, I’d love to hear it.

Thanks!

Triathlon bike fitter recs in SF?

I have a road, gravel, and triathlon bike and have never had a proper fitting done before. I’d love to get my triathlon and road bike fit (gravel I think I can deal with) ideally by someone who is very familiar with fitting Tri bikes. Any recommendations? And if you also got two bikes done by the same fitter how much did it cost?

Thanks for the insight!

Any cyclists needing a dental cleaning? 🚲

Hi everyone, my name is Lauren and I am a dental hygiene student at Chabot college in Hayward, CA! I am also a casual cyclist in my free time! A few group rides I have been on are the primavera, grizzly peak, and the cinderella! I’d be glad to learn more about the sport during our appointments together or to get recommendations for local rides.

I am working towards my graduation next year and am looking to provide cleanings to people who have not been to the dentist in a few years, or who do not have dental insurance. Our clinic offers low cost cleanings overseen by licensed professionals. These appointments are more involved than your usual dental cleaning as we are learning to be well rounded and thorough hygienists.

I am looking for:
Adults who have not been to the dentist in 3+ years.

Please note, this is a school setting, therefore the appointments take 3 hrs and a more involved cleaning may take up to 4 visits to complete. Appointments are Wednesday or Friday morning or afternoon (8:30am-11:45am or 1pm-4:15pm).
Kids under 18 take one appointment only, and we offer sealants to protect their teeth from cavities!

*My school does not fix teeth/ cavities, this is solely for teeth cleaning. However the dentists on staff can diagnose any problems you may have so you know what needs to be addressed with a dental school or office*

If you are interested message me for more info!
