Has Big Papi done more damage to the Yankees as a player or as a commentator for turning this phrase into something so catchy?

154

u/pitabread12 Boston Red Sox 6d ago

It’s truly incredible that he managed to rack up one last W on the Yankees even after retiring

9

u/Fit-Television-888 New York Yankees 6d ago

One last W? It's the gift that keeps on giving for him, he'll get one every year the Yankees are good enough to make the playoffs in the current state of the team

u/MeanCantaloupe69 6d ago

Just one? He had a pretty good time when the Dodgers beat the Yankees too.

Definitely as a commentator. Look, Big Papi was a great player, but there’ve been hundreds of great players. Papi is probably not one of the 100 greatest players ever (ranked 259th in bWAR).

But as a commentator, this man is a generational hater. As much as he tortured Yankee fans as a player with clutch performances, his hate will live on for decades - haunting generations of Yankee fans for decades to come. Even Yankee fans born after Big Papi’s career ended must now suffer this nightmare he hath brought upon us.

Definitely as a commentator. Look, Big Papi was a great player, but there’ve been hundreds of great players. Papi is probably not one of the 100 greatest players ever (ranked 259th in bWAR).

But thanks to playing when and where he did (and being absurdly clutch), he's literally the all-time leader in postseason WPA. Mostly not against the Yankees, to be fair (not that every Sox win didn't hurt you guys a little), but he did pretty much single-handedly win the 2004 ALCS.

103

u/Elitist_Daily 6d ago

Just because I was curious after seeing your comment, 0.46 of his 3.2 total postseason WPA came from the single grand slam vs detroit in 2013 lmfao

1/7th from a single hit is insane given that he's also the postseason WPA leader

48

u/TKenney3 6d ago

That hit gives me chills everytime. Could watch it on loop and never get bored. That’s gotta be one of the clutches hits in playoff history. It turned the whole series around. Without that hit the Sox’s are down 0-2 going back to Detroit

This dude carried 3 different teams to World Series titles including breaking the curse. I’m sorry but the stats can go fuck right off. Papi is a top 5 player of his generation and better than every player the Yankees have had since he joined Boston. Full stop. He’s absolutely a top 100 player in baseball history.

123

u/FireRedJP New York Yankees 6d ago

He's not even that bad as a manager but something has to change, theres got to be some culture problem that creates the exact same summer collapse that costs us the division and home field advantage every year.

45

u/SleepyGorilla Tampa Bay Rays 6d ago edited 6d ago

I think most fan bases would be very pleased if Boone was their manager and was putting out the results he does with the Yankees. Yankees fans talk about wanting more though, and I honestly think that's valid. They have a historic franchise with a history of winning it all and they have a franchise history of doing what they need to do ($$$) to make it happen. So when the team continues to fail despite continuing to pump that much money into, it's a failure when they don't win it all. It's a unique POV compared to pretty much any other team's fan base, but doesn't make it wrong.

13

u/24RoDieselFuel24 New York Yankees 6d ago

Personally the most frustrating part is the amount of waste in this team. Over 162 the Yankees still win a lot but it’s not as much as they should. They constantly give away games. It really shows when the bats go cold or injuries happen. When the quality of the play becomes important the Yankees lose but it doesn’t seem to be addressed. They don’t know how to win a tough game. For the last 8 years they brute-force their way through the regular season and lesser teams in the playoffs. Inevitably, they play a team that is close enough or more talented that plays cleaner baseball and they get mopped. Pair that with some truly baffling personnel choices, horrible roster construction, and an apparent lack of accountability, and it’s no surprise this plays out year after year.

LMAO. He's a mediocre manager. He's a great friend to his players and an even better yes man to the front office. But, he sucks at his job. He has a history of players deteriorating under his strength and conditioning staff. I'm not going to get into the defensive and base running atrocities. Players somehow forget those when they spend time with the Yankees. Their "winning seasons" are lipstick on a rotting carcass.

Agreed. I knew the rays were gonna spank us. We’ve haven’t played that well all year. The offense has been mediocre and with the injuries as well, it was a long shot.

226

u/Semantia Toronto Blue Jays 6d ago

I hate the Yankees as much as anyone, but at a certain point isn't it acceptable to just say "that's the playoffs".

It's just a crap shoot. Over a full season it's clear they are, and have been a good team. The exact same thing could have happened to the Rays and I wouldn't have been surprised.

Maybe I'm just coping from the Jays last year, but making it to the Division Series is still impressive. Only one team can win it all.

123

u/SirFerguson New York Yankees 6d ago

if we had played our best, sure. but the top down decision making and sloppy play, especially after last year’s world series embarrassment (a series I didn’t have a lot of confidence going into even at our best but still) have become a problem. I don’t mind getting outplayed by a good Rays team - it’s basically a semi annual tradition at this point because that franchise builds winners. But to be swept after a shutout and a 5 error game… it’s the team.

45

u/mikebrownhurtsme New York Yankees 6d ago

u/osound New York Yankees 6d ago

The Yankees under Boone literally don’t win playoff series against higher seeded teams, so yeah, this shit was obvious.

You would figure being unable to overachieve in any capacity during the playoffs over a 9 year period would prompt a change though.

52

u/DataLore19 Toronto Blue Jays 6d ago

Nobody wants to hear it but the real challenge is getting into the playoffs. The World Series winner is just the hottest/luckiest team that gets in.

You could easily make the argument the Jays outplayed the Dodgers last year but it's only 7 games and we got unlucky enough and Yamamoto was hot enough to tip the scales.

The playoffs is just a fun tournament for the best teams in the league and doesn't necessarily determine who the best team is. You already had 162 game sample size to determine that.

Watching the Yankees all year it really wasn’t clear to me that they were good despite the W/L record. They had so many games with 0 or 1 runs scored. The roster varied nightly, as did the batting order and who played what position. Boone sets the lineup like I set my fantasy lineup on the toilet every morning; he tinkers like it’s his job. This never looked like a real contender because there’s no cohesion. Not sure which other teams could say they have the same issue but it’s the same story every year at this point. We succeed because of our payroll despite all the massive issues that inevitably cause us to lose after the WC round every year

My Yankees hate is somewhat diminished since 2010, just because the 2010 ALCS is my #2 sports memory of all time (I was there for Game 6 and the absolute bedlam when A-Rod struck out to send the Rangers to the World Series). Not gone, because they're still the Yankees, but I don't hold the playoffs in the '90's against them so much anymore.

(if anyone is curious, #1 is obviously the 2023 World Series. #3 is the 2023 ALCS, which is only behind the 2010 ALCS because I was *there* in 2010 and I had to watch 2023 on TV).

As a Yankees fan, I am furious that the front office are going to waste Cam Schlittler and Ben Rice. That's all.

I've been a lifelong Mets fan in a sea of Yankees fans, and somehow this dude hates the Yankees more than I do.

The Rays hatred towards the Yankees runs deep and it a bit underrated unless you’re a rays fan. We have at least one bench clearing moment every year against them. We even fought in the preseason

Man the Yankees really are just one massive disappointment. You’d think this much embarrassment and mocking from opponents would be enough to make big changes but nah let’s just win 90 games next year then get embarrassed again. Whose turn is it? Orioles wanna step up to the plate?

We deserve this. It's up to us to put an end to the shit talk, but we refuse to. This is what happens when that's the case, as has been the case for years now.

I think it will be interesting to see how the dodgers will handle being forced to cut stars to become salary cap compliant.

I am TERRIFIED to see how good a Rays team will become when they are forced to spend to a cap floor.

51

u/Remarkable_Junket619 Texas Rangers 6d ago

They have the best front office and analytics department in baseball and it's not even close. The fact that they're able to be so consistently competitive AND have a top 2 farm system while being the 2nd poorest team with piss-poor attendance is legitimately insane

Also that translation, is not reflecting how much he’s belittling the Yankees. The fact that he’s saying “yankita” he’s emasculating them. In Spanish it’s a cutesy way of calling something by ending it with “ita”

“What are the poor little Yankees going to say now? Let them watch the whole thing, talk now little poor Yankees, what are the poor little Yankee’s going to say now? Daaaaa Yankees lose”
Pure cinema
