The Yankees have always been viewed like how the Dodgers are now. No one likes a big market team that buys World Series titles.

67

u/Tom_Cruise New York Yankees 6d ago

Crazy but true fact: The last time the Red Sox won a title, they were first in payroll. The Yankees were seventh.

36

u/JonMatrix Boston Red Sox 6d ago

Also crazy but true: The Rays have the highest payroll of the remaining 3 American League teams, but they are 25th overall in MLB.

u/Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop Boston Red Sox 6d ago

And the Brewers are sitting around 20th. I think the 4 Non-Dodger teams combine to barely beat out the Dodgers by themselves in combined payroll

u/Poverty_Shoes 6d ago

I want a Brewers-Rays (or Guardians) World Series so badly. We need a new team to win one. Wouldn’t even mind the White Sox getting another one, especially with how bad they were two years ago. Just not the Dodgers, please anybody but the Dodgers.

2

u/TheFinalJester97 Boston Red Sox 6d ago

Tbf it has been 21 years since the White Sox won the World Series so not an insignificant amount of time AND they had the worst season in mlb history during that span. All this to say I support my Sox brethren!

1

u/Whatever-ItsFine Los Angeles Dodgers 6d ago

Or, think about it like this: what if the Dodgers won? Sounds pretty good, right!

5

u/ELLinversionista Toronto Blue Jays 6d ago

Fucking Rays buying themselves a penant

u/DimmuBorgnine Seattle Mariners 6d ago

Yeah there’s really no truth to thr perception but the narrative matters. The Red Sox built up 100 years of underdog vibes but I think they’re largely gone at this point.

That said I’d never root for the Yankees against them, but I am certainly becoming more mellowed with age in terms of hating the Yankees. The current club is nothing like the early 00s lineups that I detested so much.

u/sup3rdr01d Boston Red Sox 6d ago

I'll hate the Yankees extra for you

12

u/Drnedsnickers2 Toronto Blue Jays 6d ago

Same.

4

u/DimmuBorgnine Seattle Mariners 6d ago

If I was from Boston disregard everything I said before

1

u/brownbearks Philadelphia Phillies 6d ago

Take my hate too

5

u/iBarber111 6d ago

Tf do you mean there's no truth to the perception. The Red Sox have had a higher payroll than the Yankees ONE year (2018).

6

u/PsychoticDreams47 New York Yankees 6d ago

The older I get, the less I care what people think. At the end of the day it's a game that I love watching, and even though yes I want my team to win it all in the end. Once it's over, I move on to the next thing until next year lol.

People that have this undying hatred for The Yankees make me laugh. Like shit dude even I hate some Yankees fans that are just embarassing.

12

u/DimmuBorgnine Seattle Mariners 6d ago

I would argue that increasingly not caring what people think is the best part about getting older

1

u/Away-Eggplant9943 6d ago

This is how I feel as a cowboys fan. We’ve haven’t won anything since the 90s but I still root for the team and hope for the best. The haters are loud but oh well, what can we do?

1

u/Solo-ish 6d ago

Deranged mookie Betts guy comes to mind!

1

u/4694326 New York Yankees 6d ago

I’m with you on not having the same passion about it. Used to get pissed off, but now, I appreciate the game more and just move on to… I don’t know what, drinking some more beers and watching Yankee highlights.

u/Financial-Humor2080 Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago

I just hate New York as a whole so Yankees are included in that.

3

u/ForceGhost47 6d ago

Well, your city is Algonquin for “The Good Land.”

0

u/PsychoticDreams47 New York Yankees 6d ago

You are allowed to hate and love whatever you want man lol. I'll never try to argue that with someone. Like wtf am i gonna do haha. "Hey man! Why? If you really think about it you're wrong because...." is such a stupid thing to do if someone hates or likes something.

Same shit with Anime. One Piece, Naruto, DBZ who fucking cares bruh. LOL welcome to my rant

-4

u/Financial-Humor2080 Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago

you put a lot of effort into not caring

1

u/PsychoticDreams47 New York Yankees 6d ago

Yeah because I think it's dumb to try and make other people feel as if their opinion on what team they do or dont like doesn't matter.....

If i like X and you like Y i don't think any different of you as a human.

u/reserved_seating Texas Rangers 6d ago

True fact for all of life, it’s ONLY the narrative that matters now. Never the truth.

1

u/Traditional_Yam9806 2d ago

Na, the yankees have outspent the red sox other than 3 years and usally the yankees outspend the red sox by a lot.

1

u/Halichoeres_bivittat 6d ago

I was at a conference with a lot of New Englanders when they finally broke the curse and it was fun celebrating with them, but since then they've become as bad as the Yankees.

1

u/Sorry-Reaction7139 5d ago

Thats when their best players were homegrown just like today lol

1

u/DimmuBorgnine Seattle Mariners 5d ago

Yeah bro, I don't know what to tell you I was 11 OK

1

u/Hebrewhammer8d8 5d ago

Derek Jeter enter the chat?

1

u/Traditional_Yam9806 2d ago

Holy propaganda. The yankees have had a higher payroll other than 2017, 2018, and 2019 (only barely, too, other than 2018, by the red sox). Otherwise they've had a far higher payroll.

17

u/oruuuus Boston Red Sox 6d ago

Yeah man the Sox are consistently one of opposing fans least liked teams in the league too, it’s fine

3

u/Drunken-Flunkee Toronto Blue Jays 6d ago

Blue Jays in 92 and 93, leading payrolls.

2

u/Illustrious-Leave-10 Detroit Tigers 6d ago

“This just in… World Series winning teams have large payrolls”

1

u/WHYlSTHERUMGONE St. Louis Cardinals 6d ago

Oh no, the billionaires are fighting again

2

u/Tom_Cruise New York Yankees 6d ago

Doesn't your owner fully own his team privately after selling an oil company he built with George W Bush using Skull and Bones Yale influence before joining his cabinet?

Bro your team is owned by the OG Elon. 🤣

0

u/Whitesox_are_neat Chicago White Sox • Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago

True but yall did it for a lot longer

Acting like a dodger fan being dense

0

u/sir_mrej Boston Red Sox • Boston Hunters 6d ago

Yes but the Red Sox didnt have a long string of it. The Yankees did. And the Dodgers are on their way.

1

u/Tom_Cruise New York Yankees 6d ago

Is this a real comment?

Over the 15 years they won those four world series, the years they won they were to 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, and 1st.

Over the past 30 years they've been in the top 5 for 22 of those years.

We are brothers, sir.

1

u/iBarber111 6d ago

Not really. Red Sox haven't been top 10 since 2021. Yankees have been top 3 every one of those years. That's not the same thing at all.

1

u/Tom_Cruise New York Yankees 6d ago

Well ... I never said you weren't the little brother 🤣

-1

u/DOWNVOTES_SYNDROME New York Mets 6d ago

and what was the reason the red sox and the rest of baseball had to start spending 200 million+ a year on payroll?

just funsies? or was there an evil empire of assholes who was buying all the players and everyone else had no choice?

3

u/Tom_Cruise New York Yankees 6d ago

Physician, heal thyself

14

u/HomerJSimpson3 Boston Red Sox 6d ago

“Buying World Series titles” is kind of the point of free agency.

14

u/LordTiddlypusch New York Yankees 6d ago

It's actually just the point of baseball or sports in general. Winning.

4

u/pragnesh_89 6d ago

As a Mets fan, lol we can't even do that. Just spend spend and spend more. And don't win.

2

u/Ame_No_Uzume 6d ago

Their fan base is like that of Dallas Cowboys of baseball. They have to remind everyone of their 27 World Series titles, while not having done anything since the early 2000s in the post season.

2

u/dwpea66 Los Angeles Dodgers 6d ago

They're also corny af lol. They lean so hard on the "were an important legacy team" thing.

And then the fans just go ahead and boo their own players.

3

u/PeterDTown Toronto Blue Jays 6d ago

It's so much more than that. Yeah, buying championships is annoying, but the yankee organization and the fans are just constantly dripping with arrogance, even when there's no justification.

2

u/DiamondHandsDarrell Los Angeles Dodgers 6d ago

That's what happens when the best team doesn't win 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/WokePredator 6d ago

Yankees title teams were just barely outspending number two. Hell, the 1998 team actually had a lower payroll than the Orioles. I don't begrudge the Dodgers or what they're doing, but it's a whole other universe from what the Yankees ever did.

1

u/throw69420awy 6d ago

If you’re against buying titles idk how you even justify being a baseball fan lol

1

u/OptimalExperience495 6d ago

If they could’ve bought them over the past 17 years, they would. The thing is now they make way too much money without even having to win a World Series, so it’s like they don’t even care anymore

1

u/clydeftones 6d ago

As a Yankee fan, really wondering when we get to have the success tied to the reputation. Our modern era successes are the product of a home grown core and bargain free agents.

1

u/Fit_Temperature3810 6d ago

how does that relate to the players though? you think they hate on LA signing Kyle Tucker for $67M/WAR or Tyler Glasgow for $5M/IP? nah, they’re salivating on those teams setting ridiculous market value and would jump at the chance to be on those teams.

1

u/XxsteakiixX Arizona Diamondbacks 4d ago

It’s funny how much the dodgers rewrote it but yes growing up I remember the Yankees being “THE TEAM” like how nfl was the cowboys and nba was the lakers

1

u/kuttymongoose 15h ago

Is that the Dominican reason tho?
