I would argue beating the Yankees in 2004 was the beginning of the end of the Yankees being the evil empire. He’s most likely done more for Yankee haters than any other person in recent history

I have nothing against Ted Williams and I know he can’t put the team entirely on his back. But Ortiz has to be the greatest Red Sox to ever play. The guy managed to join the team as a cast away from Minnesota, bringing that swag into the locker room (along with Millar and others) and finally beat the Evil Empire to make them look pedestrian.

Completely agree, Ted is probably the greatest hitter ever, but Big Papi was the leader of 3 WS teams and was clutch in every playoff run. That’s to say nothing of the role he played post Marathon Bombing.

Except they won a world series a few years later in 2009. Firing Girardi when he had a bad team playing well in favor of the Cashman & Boone marriage that has a good team playing poorly was the downfall of the Empire.

Also the Yankees built their trophy case in eras where they could simply outspend the rest of the league and guarantee they had rosters that were competing for World Series. Present day MLB has much more parity and there are many ways to build successful baseball teams.
