Why do Dominicans hate the Yankees so much? Because of Big Papi?

46

u/Specialist_Ad_6921 Baltimore Orioles 6d ago

Because all the Puerto Ricans are Yanks fans!

13

u/Flythagoras Pittsburgh Pirates 6d ago

There are more Pirates jerseys in PR than there are in Pittsburgh.

4

u/GreatBarrierQueefDD Atlanta Braves 5d ago

All 21

3

u/StatPaddingChampsNY 5d ago

I don’t know of one PR co-worker who’s not a Yankee fan. There’s even a co-worker straight from PR, never lived in NYC, he’s a die hard Yankee fan.

I work in TX.

1

u/SayAgainYourLast New York Yankees 5d ago

Not because they love the Pirates, but because of beloved legend Roberto Clemente.

Not negating your truth but I think there is a definitive distinction because Doninicans adopted the Red Sox as their main team because of the Dominican stars that led the Red Sux to their curse breaking and subsequent WS wins.

The love and support for Roberto Clemente didn't really have that same effect.

I grew up in NJ/NY and everyone I know that also grew up there are very staunch Red Sux fans. It's so annoying. Lol.

No we’re not.

Hell no we aren’t. Fuck the Yankees.

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 6d ago

It’s not Dominicans, it’s star players on rival teams who presumably get tons of flack (to put it lightly) from Yankees fans on social media (or in Ortiz’ case, in the press)

It’s not like you see Teoscar Hernandez or Jose Ramirez talking big shit

84

u/KingTutKickFlip Boston Red Sox 6d ago

It is actually Dominicans too though. There was a huge amount of pro-Red Sox vibes in DR for a long time because of the Dominican megastars they had- Papi, Pedro, Manny etc

35

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 6d ago

Oh for sure, but then you have a huge Dominican population in NY with tons of second and third generation Yankee fans. And I’m sure there are plenty in the DR itself too. I mean, Oneil Cruz was named after Paul O’Neill lol

15

u/Radthereptile New York Yankees 6d ago

Maybe his family were big Reds fans.

8

u/jawndell 6d ago

Yeah all the Dominicans in NY LOVE the Yankees.  They probably talk mad shit about other teams when they go back to DR.

2

u/tinydancer_inurhand 6d ago

I’m pretty sure there is a subset of Dominicans in NY who are Red Sox fans. Cardi B is a Red Sox fan from youth.

1

u/brianmcg9 Boston Red Sox 6d ago

Most of the Dominicans also a live in the Bronx and upper Manhattan so they are in close proximity to Yankee stadium

1

u/yankee4life New York Yankees 6d ago

And Jasson Dominguez being named so because his dad loved Jason Giambi

5

u/jumpinjacktheripper Boston Red Sox 6d ago

ya it’s not that dominicans particularly hate the Yankees it’s that dominicans particularly love big papi and that became a classic papi moment as soon as he said it

1

u/mrspoopy_butthole New York Yankees 6d ago

Jose Ramirez isn’t a star player?

3

u/Yachiru5490 Cleveland Guardians 6d ago

Right, because that's "future HOF" player Jose Ramirez

0

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 6d ago

I’m saying that he is a star Dominican player on a team that has played the Yankees in big games, and doesn’t really talk his shit like that

I would bet a lot of money that Caminero deals with a lot more Yankees fans in his mentions than Ramirez, and I mean that before he ever played the Yankees in the postseason

2

u/Maximum_Barracuda_46 Pittsburgh Pirates • New York Yankees 6d ago

He's played the Yankees in the postseason 4 times?

1

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 6d ago

I feel like I’m in opposite world lol. My comment says Ramirez IS a star player who HAS played the Yankees in big games

Hey I’m in New York and doing my part to hate the Yankees from inside

Wow, that is dedication. To hate the Yankees so much you move to NY to destroy them from the inside. /S

23

u/SiphenPrax New York Mets 6d ago

People in New York hates the Yankees too. Almost half the metro area hates them!

9

u/Radthereptile New York Yankees 6d ago

Mets do not make up half the metro area. I don’t think you all even get half of Long Island.

7

u/SiphenPrax New York Mets 6d ago

“Almost”

And we absolutely have a lot of fans in Long Island and North Jersey. No as much had the Yankees fans but I see Mets merch being worn all the damn time

8

hahahahaha “almost.”

2

u/BeardedPuffin New York Mets 6d ago

Mets aren’t the Clippers or Nets. They have a ton of fans in the metro area. I don’t know the exact percentage, but it’s definitely closer to 50% than the other NY “second teams”.

Los mess ni verga valen

6

u/stormwalker29 Texas Rangers 6d ago

My Yankees hate is somewhat diminished since 2010, just because the 2010 ALCS is my #2 sports memory of all time (I was there for Game 6 and the absolute bedlam when A-Rod struck out to send the Rangers to the World Series). Not gone, because they're still the Yankees, but I don't hold the playoffs in the '90's against them so much anymore.

(if anyone is curious, #1 is obviously the 2023 World Series. #3 is the 2023 ALCS, which is only behind the 2010 ALCS because I was *there* in 2010 and I had to watch 2023 on TV).

1

u/Halichoeres_bivittat 6d ago

It's the same reason that Manchester United has so many fans outside of Manchester and the Lakers have so many fans outside of LA. Big market teams with a history of success attract otherwise unaligned fans. Plus celebrities wear their gear so people get to know the logos.

24

u/PaladinGodfather1931 Philadelphia Phillies 6d ago

I've never seen a Mets fan try to steal Mookie Betts' glove on an foul pop.. and I've seen Phillies fans throw batteries at JD Drew.

3

u/Medical_Squirrel3946 6d ago

Yes, but Mookie Betts is the greatest American alive and JD Drew deserves to have batteries thrown at him.

38

u/GuyForgett Boston Red Sox 6d ago

Terrible take that’s factually incorrect

0

u/mememachine_420 New York Yankees 6d ago

I’m saying Yankees and Mets fans literally grow up across the street from each other all across NY/NJ/CT. The only functional difference between an average Yankees fan and an average Mets fan is who their families root for.

10

u/mondaybeers Toronto Blue Jays 6d ago

Mets fans have a humility to them that is necessary to survival as a Mets fan. It’s an evolutionary response.

2

u/Old_Jellyfish1283 Cleveland Guardians 6d ago

This kind of just makes the point though that Yankees fans are pricks for no reason. It’s not a “NYC thing,” it’s uniquely a Yankee fan thing. Same exact environment but only one of thems an ass

3

u/dwpea66 Los Angeles Dodgers 6d ago

They are literally the same people from the same area, but Mets fans manage to be chill af... so it must be a Yankee thing

8

Manhattan, where do you live?

4

u/NuanceManExe New York Mets 6d ago

Next I’ll be telling you the sky is blue

3

u/Medical_Squirrel3946 6d ago

This is like when during the World Cup, English fans were getting angry that everyone like the Scots and didn't like them. Just like I said to the English, no you aren't the same and we like them cause they're fun and lovable and you're a bunch of pricks who just happen to share an island with them.

1

u/mememachine_420 New York Yankees 6d ago

Yeah this is just a weird false equivalency lol. There are very obvious political, historical, and cultural differences between England and Scotland. Distance-wise, Edinburgh to London is farther than NYC to Pittsburgh. They are in no way the same people. The point I’m making is that Yankees and Mets fans come from the same/very similar cultural backgrounds, live in the same neighborhoods, go to the same schools, lead similar lives, etc.

The only differentiating factor that determines Yankees/Mets fandom for the vast majority of fans is whether their parents are Yankees or Mets fans. There are maybe some slight geographical differences (obviously Queens vs. the Bronx but also slight variations based on neighborhoods, Long Island vs. NJ vs. CT, etc.) but largely they’re the same people, the Yankees just have many times more fans than the Mets

Isn’t the normal NYC alignment

Giants/Yankees/Rangers

Jets/Mets/Islanders

6

u/JDStraightShot2 New York Yankees 6d ago

Yeah, Yankees/Giants and Mets/Jets are pairings bc each duo used to share a stadium before the Giants and Jets moved to Jersey. Hockey is a little different bc the Islanders are really Long Islands team, so most NYC natives are Rangers fans if they care about hockey. There are also the Devils in Jersey, which leans Yankees. There’s a some correlation where Islanders fans are more likely to be Mets/Jets bc those teams played at Shea in queens which is very easy to reach from LI, while getting to Yankee Stadium from LI is a bigger pain

Everybody roots for the Knicks though, which is why the city exploded so much more for their run than any other teams

0

The only reason everyone hates the Yankees is their fanbase.

I see it every time the Yankees come to town. They will fight you on your home turf for cheering for your own team. Any other fan will just be happy to watch baseball and talk baseball with someone else.

85

u/GiannisIsTheBeast 6d ago

The Yankees have always been viewed like how the Dodgers are now. No one likes a big market team that buys World Series titles.

60

u/Tom_Cruise New York Yankees 6d ago

Crazy but true fact: The last time the Red Sox won a title, they were first in payroll. The Yankees were seventh.

36

u/JonMatrix Boston Red Sox 6d ago

Also crazy but true: The Rays have the highest payroll of the remaining 3 American League teams, but they are 25th overall in MLB.

15

u/Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop Boston Red Sox 6d ago

And the Brewers are sitting around 20th. I think the 4 Non-Dodger teams combine to barely beat out the Dodgers by themselves in combined payroll

7

u/Poverty_Shoes 6d ago

I want a Brewers-Rays (or Guardians) World Series so badly. We need a new team to win one. Wouldn’t even mind the White Sox getting another one, especially with how bad they were two years ago. Just not the Dodgers, please anybody but the Dodgers.

2

u/TheFinalJester97 Boston Red Sox 6d ago

Tbf it has been 21 years since the White Sox won the World Series so not an insignificant amount of time AND they had the worst season in mlb history during that span. All this to say I support my Sox brethren!

47

Yeah there’s really no truth to thr perception but the narrative matters. The Red Sox built up 100 years of underdog vibes but I think they’re largely gone at this point.

That said I’d never root for the Yankees against them, but I am certainly becoming more mellowed with age in terms of hating the Yankees. The current club is nothing like the early 00s lineups that I detested so much.

7

u/PsychoticDreams47 New York Yankees 6d ago

The older I get, the less I care what people think. At the end of the day it's a game that I love watching, and even though yes I want my team to win it all in the end. Once it's over, I move on to the next thing until next year lol.

People that have this undying hatred for The Yankees make me laugh. Like shit dude even I hate some Yankees fans that are just embarassing.

“Buying World Series titles” is kind of the point of free agency.

14

It's actually just the point of baseball or sports in general. Winning.

3

u/pragnesh_89 6d ago

As a Mets fan, lol we can't even do that. Just spend spend and spend more. And don't win.

2

u/Ame_No_Uzume 6d ago

Their fan base is like that of Dallas Cowboys of baseball. They have to remind everyone of their 27 World Series titles, while not having done anything since the early 2000s in the post season.

2

u/dwpea66 Los Angeles Dodgers 6d ago

They're also corny af lol. They lean so hard on the "were an important legacy team" thing.

And then the fans just go ahead and boo their own players.

2

u/PeterDTown Toronto Blue Jays 6d ago

It's so much more than that. Yeah, buying championships is annoying, but the yankee organization and the fans are just constantly dripping with arrogance, even when there's no justification.

2

u/DiamondHandsDarrell Los Angeles Dodgers 6d ago

That's what happens when the best team doesn't win 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

Yankees title teams were just barely outspending number two. Hell, the 1998 team actually had a lower payroll than the Orioles. I don't begrudge the Dodgers or what they're doing, but it's a whole other universe from what the Yankees ever did.

1

u/throw69420awy 6d ago

If you’re against buying titles idk how you even justify being a baseball fan lol

1

u/OptimalExperience495 6d ago

If they could’ve bought them over the past 17 years, they would. The thing is now they make way too much money without even having to win a World Series, so it’s like they don’t even care anymore

1

u/clydeftones 6d ago

As a Yankee fan, really wondering when we get to have the success tied to the reputation. Our modern era successes are the product of a home grown core and bargain free agents.

1

u/Fit_Temperature3810 5d ago

how does that relate to the players though? you think they hate on LA signing Kyle Tucker for $67M/WAR or Tyler Glasgow for $5M/IP? nah, they’re salivating on those teams setting ridiculous market value and would jump at the chance to be on those teams.

Just going by the most vocal players who happens to be Dominican. Started with Ortiz, Vladdy now Junior

5

u/Jealous_Gene134 Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago

i feel like its pretty easy to tie it all together. papi hates the yankees cuz hes a red sox. hes the face of the team. vladdy hates the yankees, cuz its a divisional rival, hes the face of the blue jays and probably looked up to papi as a role model. and then at this point its a tradition. AND, its the yankees. what more of a reason do you need for people to hate them??

3

u/GenericUsername1262 6d ago

Also the Yankees played Vladdy Sr when he tried to bring Vladdy Jr to the game one time. So Vladdy had that memory.

2

FYI Vladdy hates the Yankees because of his dad and his carbon copy Griffey story. The Gary Sheffield over Vladdy Sr offseason, plus he got booted off the field as a kid, same as Ken Griffey Jr.

Pedro Martinez as well. His post game had me cracking up

Hmm or maybe it's just because they are all players that played their entire careers in AL East...

u/Viracochina 6d ago

I hate them because my sister was rooting for them one time in 2004 while trying to impress a guy she was dating

u/reagan_baby New York Yankees 6d ago

The Big Papi era Red Sox definitely made Sox fans out of a lot of Dominicans. So you'll see Sox hats in NYC because if that. But upper Manhattan and the Bronx are filled with Domincans. They don't hate the Yankees.

Because you should and it's fun.

For the life of me I can’t remember the last liked Dominican on the Yankees.

Because fuck the Yankees. Biggest egos in the league.

u/turnstile2243 Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6d ago

Their fans are legit the most annoying in sports. They talk the loudest, and complain the loudest. They are also spoiled as shit and will hang all those mickey mouse rings over your head even though half those are when plumbers were playing baseball.

Just overall, very fucking annoying lol. Seeing it first time at their stadium too

Vladdy specifically has said it was due to racism he experienced at their ballpark, I’m not sure about the other Dominican players reasons… although Caminero and Vladdy are close friends

Big Papi gets shot by his own people in the Dominican.

1

u/Fun_Ad5823 6d ago

Because they all want to play for the Yankees and are lowkey mad they aren't on the team

1

u/jumpinjacktheripper Boston Red Sox 6d ago

i think it’s just that everyone hates the yankees and dominicans love big papi. so when dominicans beats the yankees they get to celebrate their win and quote a national icon in one go

1

u/throw69420awy 6d ago

I see plenty of Yankees hats in the DR, also see plenty of Red Sox hats

1

u/surebudd 6d ago

It’s not just Dominicans, it’s everyone. Nature is healing. Da jankees looooooose

1

u/Prize-Flamingo-336 New York Yankees 6d ago

Kinda. The Yankees, for being such a huge baseball team in the city with such a large Dominican population tend not to have alot of Dominican players. The Red Sox cornered that market in the 00s with the triple threat of Manny, Ortiz, and Pedro. Also, I will always keep saying this, the Yankees DONT LIKE TO HAVE FUN and to Dominicans, baseball IS fun! Check the highlights from the WBC. Compare Austin Wells playing for Team Dominican to him playing with the Yankees

u/Mobile-Language8398 Cincinnati Reds 6d ago

It isn’t a DR thing… just ask Ken Griffey Jr

1

u/CuriousFT Boston Red Sox 6d ago

Dominican here, piling up on the comments, we as a culture love to tease and brag and pimp (as u can see on our celebrations). Most of the time is good fun, sometimes tho annoying people get overboad talking smack about a team and talking about its history and and shitting in the other teams. It gets tiring real quick, specially when they keep losing.

1

u/Masterank1 New York Yankees 6d ago

Most Dominicans are yankee fans though. The Dominicans you see who hate them are major leaguers who play for rival teams. Of course they hate the Yankees, and no it has nothing to do with Puerto Ricans.

u/TheDayman_240 6d ago

I remember when they found a Big Papi jersey buried in the concrete when they were building the new Yankee stadium. That construction worker is an absolute legend for that.

Feels like he's angry he's not on the Yankees and has to work for Tampa Bay.

Twisting into yeah f them ...but in heartbeat would go to the Yankees if possible

1

u/TserriednichThe4th 5d ago

dominicans do not hate the yankees lmao. yankees are probably the favorite of dominican teams alongside chicago and boston.

1

u/DependentBid4497 4d ago

big papi definitely played a part but the red sox rivalry goes way deeper than that lol

I thought it was the racism of the Yankees franchise. Not the players on the Yankees- the front office, security, etc.

Because they love baseball.
