Family Drama When inappropriate attire is barely even worth mentioning

This happened all the way back in 2008-2009, so some details are a bit hazy to me. Still, the content of the day is so absurd upon retrospect, and my husband suggested I should post it here (he explicitly stated that he wanted credits for this), so here I am. Facts have been reconstructed from memory and from conversations with my mother.

This story starts on the morning of the wedding. Enter my family: my stepfather (M47), our mother (F41), my half-sister (F2), and me (F11), were invited to the wedding of one of my step-father’s nieces. Our mother usually spent a long time getting ready, and while it was not surprising, it got irritating eventually, especially for an anxious 11-year-old with undiagnosed ADHD. So after multiple times of her asking me if she looked nice (to which I said yes), I snapped back at her with: “Fine, you look prettier than the bride, alright?! Can we go now, please?” And while this answer resulted in her chastising me for being inappropriate, it also managed to get us out of the house.

My mother truly did look very pretty in her flowy, floor-length, beaded sheath dress in white.

Both the ceremony and reception lunch were at the same venue, a house with a yard jointly owned by my stepfather’s family. The small scale and intimacy of the event was not only odd for a family our size, but also for wedding traditions in general in our country (we are Vietnamese). Contrary to my anxieties about being late, the groom was even later. In fact, they did not even seem to be done with setting everything up by the time we arrived. Apparently the aunts and uncles on our side of the family had chipped in to throw this thing together in a rush because the bride was pregnant. This was still quite early in my mother’s marriage to my stepfather, so I have no recollection of ever meeting this cousin or her betrothed before. It was only later that I realised, that as I ran off to play with the other kids, the dishevelled-looking woman in her yoga pants glaring daggers at our mother and her white dress had been the bride herself. Oh yeah, the wearing-white-to-someone’s-wedding part is hardly relevant, I just wanted to lead with that.

One hour later. The groom still hasn’t shown. The bride has also disappeared, presumably to her suite to get ready. There were rumours of traffic and/or lovers’ quarrel among the adults. That was of no concern for us, the children, who were quite content with our children’ things, such as throwing ice water into the neighbour’s yard, or nicking food off plates when we thought nobody was looking. It was good to know where the kitchen was and have access to it. There might have been some puppies as well, which would buy the adults 15 extra minutes of relative peace and quiet from us.

Minutes, not hours. 2 hours later, the groom was still nowhere to be seen, and we children could only repress our gremlin nature for so long. We managed to swindle a few 2-liter bottles of Coke from the adults and found some Mentos. We took these to the sidewalk, by the flowerarch, for we were considerate enough to not cause a disturbance indoors. We were such angels.

Our plans did not pan out the way we hoped, because we were little shits who did not know how things worked. But being outside did divert our attention to the flower arch, and someone came up with the idea of making rose-flavoured Coke, which was followed up with other flower-related vandalisms. And as we were hacking at the flower arch, branch by branch, bud by bud, the bride-to-be came storming out in our direction, red-faced. It was clear she had been crying. She was screaming that we were stupid and destructive, that we ruined everything. I don’t remember how the other kids reacted, but I was frozen in fear and confusion.

My mother came out a few minutes later, having changed into her backup dress, a loose, semi-formal brown number. She said it was “inappropriate for her to wear a white dress now that it was not a wedding anymore” (?!) We stayed for an extremely awkward family lunch afterward.

I eventually learned the following things. At the time I was too young to grasp most of this, but I remember peoples’ reactions, and now, many years later, they sure do make a lot of sense:

  1. The bride was not pregnant.
  2. Sources differed if she had a miscarriage before the wedding, or if she was ever pregnant in the first place.
  3. But she wanted the guy to believe she was, and once he found out, he was understandably pissed off about being lied to.
  4. He had a girlfriend at the time.
  5. My cousin’s hypothetical child may have been conceived in a drunk one-night-stand, which is what caused the wedding rush. They had barely known each other.

So that was the worst wedding I’ve ever been to. My cousin eventually got married to someone else and had kids of her own. She’s doing fine now. Fast forward, I got married to the love of my life earlier this year. Our wedding was small, intimate, and thrown in a rush by our family since the Registry Office took forever to approve our license. I was not pregnant. Our friends have no kids so there were none at the wedding. It was perfect.

EDIT: I am not AI. I am not a bot. Just a person who enjoys writing and a memory to share. I understand AI advancing is making people paranoid, but just because someone knows how to form a sentence doesn't make them AI, and it's frankly demoralizing to keep getting accused of being one.

To those who enjoy this post: Thank you for reading and commenting. Glad a chaotic piece of my childhood could bring some joy into your day.

Tacky I am sick of “black tie” weddings with no black tie experience

11.1k Upvotes

I have been to three black tie weddings and not one came close to a black tie experience. All held on grass (two backyard weddings) no passed hors d’oeuvres, NOT ONE PLATED DINNER?!?!?! I just don’t understand. Is basic wedding etiquette gone? Why would you want to have your friends pay for and dress up to attend a high end wedding and provide none of the experience?

Bridezilla/Groomzilla You Get A Day, Not A Weekend, Monday, Or Season!

4.0k Upvotes

I was a guest's plus one at a wedding last month, and since everyone who attended has FEELINGS about a particular thing that happened, I thought I'd put this here.

It was a normal and lovely wedding. Wedding happens, lovely... Reception happens, lovely. Even the send-off was great, and the bride and groom left for a hotel near the airport, as they were flying off very early to Tahiti for their honeymoon the next morning.

The next day, all the guests are doing their own thing, as this was a local wedding. The FOB (father of the bride), however, had a brunch at his house for HIS family and friends, especially for those who traveled. (He and the MOB are divorced, and he has a girlfriend of several years.) It was casual and buffet style brunch, and after everyone had been there about an hour, FOB takes his girlfriend's hand and announces to everyone that they eloped a month ago. They hadn't said anything, because they didn't want to take anything away from the bride and groom.

They took out their rings, to put them on publicly, and everyone congratulated them - hugs, smiles, kisses... Well, who comes through the door but B&G, who overslept, missed their flight, and the next one they could get wasn't for another day.

They were immediately filled in on FOB's news. Groom congratulated FOB and his new wife, but Bride was PISSED. She started having a huge hissy-fit, and burst into tears, sobbing that she couldn't believe FOB would do this on her "wedding weekend."

Now, the family didn't all immediately flutter around her. Some older female relatives wanted to pack her off to bed ("she's just so tired from the wedding stress"), but Bride wanted to stay and be a spectacle. Some of the younger guests said things like, "You get a DAY, not a weekend," and, "You weren't even supposed to be here, you know." (I loved them.)

In the end, Bride and Groom huffed off to beg a room from MOB, but her histrionics put a bit of a damper on the brunch - though one friend made new wife promise to let her throw them a party, so that was nice.

Bridezilla/Groomzilla Worst hosts ever - a wedding I’d rather forget

2.5k Upvotes

Relevant details: Bride (30F) and groom (28M), both from small Midwestern USA towns, lower-middle class. They had been living together several years by the wedding date.

The dress code: Maids required to purchase $250+ purple chiffon dress (and some up to $250 more for alterations). Boys wearing jeans, white button-down, and cowboy hat. Girls are up there looking like Grimace going to prom while the boys are going to drink Bud Light at a dive bar.

The bridesmaid “proposal”: One of the maids hired a pro photographer for college graduation to get pictures with her family. Bride CRASHED HER PHOTO SHOOT to do her bridesmaid proposal. Half her grad pictures are that. For context, we all met at community college and several of us graduated that day. I think bride thought it would be a good time since we were all together?????

The Shower: First off, can we as a society just quit it with this nonsense?? But NONE OF HER FAMILY threw a shower. She has two sisters, aunts, grandma. Groom has family, too. Sadly, both moms are deceased, but still plenty of family. Almost ALL local. So maids had to throw the shower, to which BRIDE INVITED 74 WOMEN! Almost every woman on the guest list was invited! Holy shit, we think, better get a big enough venue! Crap! Meanwhile, groom’s grandparents are retiring and moving cross-country. A few weeks before the shower, groom’s family announced the going-away party for Grama & Grampa is the same day as her shower 💀 Obviously none of groom’s side came. We had 15-20 guests outside the bridesmaids. It cost bridesmaids over $500 for her gift grab.

The bachelorette: Now, at this point you already know we had a multiple-day festival. Cost maids well over $300 each. Bride was irritating, to say the least, and did not contribute financially or otherwise.

The Wedding: A tragedy in Three Acts…

Act One: The Night Before. Air BNB rented, bridal party was “required” to stay the night before nuptials. Twelve people in 3 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms, and wedding the next day. Several party members got kicked out for refusing to come to BNB. Bride & groom had been there one night already and had bought a little food for themselves, but nothing for the wedding party. No fruit, sandwiches, snacks, not even drinks! One groomsman announced he was attending a concert in the city 30 min away that started at 11pm. Bride had total meltdown, locked herself in a room for an hour or so, meaning we were very late to rehearsal dinner. We didn’t end up eating until about 8pm.

Act Two: Wedding Day. For breakfast, the gals woke up to a pan full of heavily-seasoned, cold scrambled eggs and cold sausage links. The dudes had already left. For breakfast. At the venue, they say subs being delivered for lunch. We each got 6” sub - nothing else. Again, no snacks provided all freaking day and dinner was around 6pm! The guests, oh the guests. Not sure how many tables, but over 1/3 were empty, despite RSVPs! Bride picked fights with both her sisters. Bride was furious people not sitting in their assigned seats, but only gave assignments for first three tables.

Act Three: The Real Kick in the Pants
During vows, the couple revealed to their guests that they actually eloped more than a year earlier 😵 Some people actually knew (bridal party knew for sure). After that, nobody was real excited to be there. Like 5 people watched the bride/groom dance and the place cleared out pretty early.

There’s so much more to shame, but those are the highlights.

ETA clarification…
Other maids have not complained, or at least not that I heard. No drama amongst bridesmaids.

Another maid planned the shower. Why she didn’t censor the 74-person guest list, I have no idea. Also, in our area of the USA, family of the bride hosts bridal showers.

Greedy Please don’t have a wedding where you demand costly things from your bridesmaids but simultaneously won’t pay for them

1.3k Upvotes

This is a quick post. Back in my early twenties, I was a bridesmaid for a friend. In this wedding, it was demanded that we had to pay for our own dress, makeup, and hair. It was a good friend and I really wanted to be there for her, but I didn’t have the money to cover all this. Hair alone was $100+.

I like to think the bride wasn’t a bridezilla but maybe just wasn’t being as thoughtful as she could have been. I asked if I could do my makeup and hair myself. She relented but asked if I could at least get my hair professionally done by her specified hair dresser.

I ended up paying for the hair and dress with money I didn’t have.

I know this kinda thing isn’t always top of mind when you’re young, but if you’re going to have a wedding where you demand ANYTHING from your bridesmaids. Please at least pay for it for them. And if you can’t afford it. Then maybe don’t demand it.

Edit:
- Really interesting to see the cultural differences between Europeans and Americans.
- re: those saying hair and dress is not that much to pay for. We also had to pay for a multi-day bachelorette party with expensive activities + hotel and travel.
- re: those saying “you could have just said no.” As someone older now, I agree. But at the same time, it’s not easy to tell someone you can’t be there for them because you don’t have the money.

Cringe talk to your guests, please. It’s not that hard.

Went to a wedding with my boyfriend & the bride & groom didn’t make it a point to see all of their guests (50 or so) to make light conversation at the tables or at a receiving line. Is that the new normal? This is the second wedding in the last several months its happened & it made me mad. Pretend like you’re happy to have me as a guest & want me there. I never met the bride at this one because she wasn’t around much or introduced herself to me (plus 1). Maybe I’m overreacting, but my mom would be so mad if I didn’t at least have a mini conversation with everyone. Even a “hi, thanks for coming” would have been sufficient for me.

Bridezilla/Groomzilla Vienna sausages out of the can, anyone...

1.2k Upvotes

This was a long time ago, but it still sticks in my mind.

The bride had a huge oil portrait of herself made, to where it was a little bit taller than her sitting down next to it. And it wasn't a portrait of the newlyweds - it was just her in her dress. The planner had everyone line up to greet *just the bride* sitting next to this really expensive oil painting and fawn over her. The line took forever.

And then we get to the food... Not joking, y'all... Crackers and vienna sausages. Cold ones. Just gross.

Lady spent all that money, thousands, on a Louvre-sized oil painting of herself, while the reception theme was apparently "3 year old's snacks".

Gotta wonder if the couple's still together, but I'd have to ask my ex, and that ain't happening.

I did not attend this wedding. The contrast of the dress to the guests attire is striking. Having a revealing dress is one thing, but it looks like an other wise completely normal wedding??????? This is so bizarre

Family Drama Laundry list of all things wrong with pre-wedding & wedding events

My cousin who is the bride is getting married in a few months and my partner and I are in the wedding party.

-MOH texted all the bridesmaids demanding a surprise $350 for the bridal shower, I didn’t respond in the group chat or send the money because I was in the hospital. Cousins future MIL asked why I didn’t send my money or answer in the group chat and if I “really wanted to be a bridesmaid”.

-the bridal shower had an event that was blatantly racist as the main attraction.

-all signage, invites and name tags for the bridal shower were made without approval from anyone by brides future MIL with AI and made zero sense. It was like ChatGPT threw up all over.

-bachelor party is axe throwing, dinner at a local steakhouse and an overnight stay at a hotel. Total cost: $560 per person, $50 for axe throwing, $300 for dinner and $210 for hotel, unless “copious amounts of alcohol are consumed at dinner, then every one will have to chip in more to cover the bill”

-all bride and grooms uncles, grandpas and male cousins are also invited to the bachelor party, and some of them are bringing their wives and girlfriends.

-wives and girlfriends also went to the men’s suit fitting because “they can’t be trusted”. I was invited the day before and politely declined.

-cousins registry for bridal shower and wedding are all household goods… for a home they don’t have (they are looking to move in together before the wedding in two months, but can’t find a place in their budget) So I had to buy her sheets for a king bed she doesn’t own, which are now sitting in a storage unit. She also registered for three different sets of plates, cutlery and glassware.

-bride sent out an after party invite in a group chat to everyone in the wedding party with a typo on it, the groom called her out in the group chat telling her she didn’t proof read it.

-brides future MIL has taken over MOH duties on her own accord. The MOH added her to our bridesmaids group chat and she now sends over ten texts in our group whenever she needs to relay information. If we answer, she verbally assaults us, if we don’t answer, she verbally assaults us.

-grooms uncle became an ordained minister online and is going to “surprise officiate their wedding”. They aren’t telling the bride or groom until the day of the wedding, they think someone from their DJ company is going to officiate. This idea was approved by the bride and grooms parents.

-their horribly behaved pet is going to be IN the wedding ceremony & pictures because the bride “wants him there on her big day”

-there is a 200 person minimum for the wedding venue, so the
guest list is a bunch of random people the parents of the bride & groom cobbled together.

-the brides entire wedding ensemble is well over $12,000 and they “can’t find an apartment they can afford”,

I could go on and on. These are the key points I can remember right now. If I wasn’t so invested in seeing how everything plays out on the day of the wedding, I would drop out of being in the wedding party. First and last time I will ever be a bridesmaid.

Cringe People are getting out of hand with the micro weddings

Micro weddings are extremely cringe.

Acquaintances with a young woman who has been planning her wedding for quite some time. She finally got engaged earlier this month, so she can start planning in earnest.

Her family has money, so all we have heard about at work is how her dream wedding is flying out to Iceland with an exclusive guest list of 8-10 people, hiking to a waterfall, and then exchanging vows. Cool. Whatever floats your boat. Sounds like a nice plan. HOWEVER, she plans a follow up party so “everyone who wasn’t invited to the ceremony can celebrate with them.” She plans on having a honeymoon registry and traditional registry so they can “upgrade” some stuff in the brand new massive house they just bought. She claims the micro wedding is in the name of saving money (girl, what?! She knows how expensive that travel is…she and her mom went there just a year or two ago) and because she “hates being the center of attention.” Then why have a big party afterward?

If you’re that concerned about saving money, just elope. And if you do the ceremony with an exclusive, tiny guest list but then throw a party later/after for a bigger group, that just looks like a money grab. I’m so tired of people being like, “our day is soooo intimate and soooo exclusive because we are sooo important” and then spending thousands on a destination wedding and then posting about it one hundred times online. If it’s truly that intimate and special, don’t share it. If you are going to do the tiny wedding and then do a massive reception for your B list and beyond, that’s tacky. You can’t have it both ways. Sorry.

EDITING TO ADD: I should utilize this throwaway for shitty opinions more often and post shit like this, because the amount of butt hurt responses are sending me into outer space. Thanks for amusing me! 😇

Cringe Wedding invite did not say ceremony and reception are 2 different locations. I'm finding out less than 24 hours before wedding

1.7k Upvotes

Ok, if I'm out of touch just let me know

Last wedding I went to was a zoom wedding in 2020. I just don't know people who get married I guess. So maybe it's normal to not list 2 locations on the invites?

Got the wedding invitation by regular mail months ago. 5x7 flat card with nice looking invite on one side. Names, date, time wedding starts, and a location. Underneath the location address it has a single line which reads "reception to follow"

Backside of the card was a giant QR code to RSVP. There was certainly room to have both addresses and state there is a ceremony venue and then a reception venue. QR code was for RSVP and gift registry at the knot website. I looked at the knot website once and promptly put the invitation on the fridge like my mom taught me

If it wasn't for my husband deciding to check the knot website in case there were updates I suppose I would have found out in a few more hours. The ceremony venue is suited for the ceremony and reception. It's a park where there is a stage area a tent can be added. It also has a very nice and new paved pavilion with the best handicap accessible bathrooms you've ever seen in a park. My husband is brother of the groom and has mobility issues so I never questioned if there was more than 1 location. The 2nd location is an event center so it should also be handicap friendly. I'm so confused why the invite didn't have both locations on it

Family Drama Late Photographer, Forced Birthday Celebrations, Momzilla, Secret Invites with Unknown Cancellations

My wedding in 2017. And Holy Crow, buckle up for the drama!

For starters, me and now husband paid for our wedding out of pocket with no financial aid from family or friends. Did lots of DIY for cost savings. And it turned out gorgeous! Ceremony was a dream. The rest was a NIGHTMARE.

I was in nursing school and living at home. My mother could not butt out of planning. Because shipments were coming to our house, she would accept them while I was at school and immediately return products if she didn’t like the decor. SO many fights as it took extra expenses to cover return costs and reorder to get back our supplies. We did eventually change shipping address to now husbands address to end that ridiculous BS.

While looking for a venue, we wanted to go to a town hall for reception that had sentimental value to now husband. I don’t know what possessed us, but we gave the ok to my mom coming at her request. She didn’t like it. Said it looked like a bowling alley. Wasn’t to the “standard” of our family and would embarrass her (not accurate as all it would take is drapes with lighting along the walls to set the tone). Huge outdoor area with a park for families and a country view of a basilica in the background that’s regionally famous and looks like a castle. Just peaceful and beautiful. But she threw a tantrum. Started screaming at the staff there, swearing at them, stomping her feet, threatening to disown me, balling, going in and out slamming the door. We already put down the deposit. But after the staff watched her dramatics, they pulled us aside and made excuses as to why they couldn’t host us and refunded our deposit. We lost our dream site. In the parking lot my mom laughed and said we’d thank her later. It was devastating.

The invites were also a disaster. I had already sent them out with my parents address listed for RSVP. The closer we got to the deadline for RSVPs, I noticed people I didn’t know responding…We had received a few notices of being unable to attend; my now husband and I agreed those openings would go to him as he didn’t have as many invites left for friend due to him having a larger family.

Something was fishy. I interrogated my mom. Turns out she was running to the mailbox every day, opening RSVPs, hiding ones that couldn’t come, then sending invites to her personal friends INCLUDING PEOPLE ON MY “ABSOLUTELY NOT INVITING” LIST because I had very bad relationships with them. By the time I knew, we reached full capacity and it was too late. My now husband was screwed over and we were beyond pissed she stole those seats from him. But we were in the 9th hour and it was too late to change things as it was a week from the wedding.

Then set up. My mom wanted an alcohol free reception. We were having a luncheon and were supplying beers. When friends who were helping set up came with cases of beers, she threw a hissy fit; cussing them out, balling we didn’t love her, stomping her feet, claiming I had zero respect for her. Too bad so sad. That was a gift from my FIL so he could share some beers with close friends. And we’re not a dry household. Perfectly appropriate for a luncheon.

Day of disaster. We hired a photographer that we didn’t know at the time was a friend of my moms (they hid that fact to manipulate the hiring so my mom could dictate photos behind the scene). I had met with photographer prior and outlined very specific photos we wanted and emphasized we only had an hour because we weren’t going to make our guests wait to eat.

Photographer showed up 90 minutes late with the excuse of having a cold and that it was her birthday so she had “an excuse” 🤬🙄😤 The groomsmen got 15 minutes of photos (thank God they turned out nice). After the ceremony, photographer initially refused to do our requested photos. Later found out my mom gave a different list of photos to do. AGAIN, WE PAID FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER. We actually had to fight and threaten violation of the contract before she’d do our photos. By then, we had 15 minutes before needing to leave for reception.

Then the literal icing on top of the cake. At our reception unannounced, my mom stopped the start of the luncheon and brought out a birthday cake for our photographer and prompted the ENTIRE room to sing her happy birthday before lunch. We were LIVID. And after all of this, my mom had the gall to go to my now husband at the reception to tell him he owed the photographer an apology for being so rude about making her take our requested pictures and making her feel bad on her birthday.

WOMAN, IT IS OUR WEDDING, OUR MONEY, OUR CONTRACT. If that photographer didn’t want to work on her birthday, she didn’t need to take the job.

THE AUDACITY.

We left for honeymoon the next day. I blocked my mom’s number knowing she’d keep her crap up. When I unblocked her number, 30 missed calls and 50 texts telling me how much we embarrassed her in front of her friends and how ungrateful we were.

Suffice to say I went no contact with her for a while (due to other issues too). We’re back in contact, but she is a very narcissistic woman. We have no qualms cutting her off if she doesn’t reign in bad behavior.

Lol, it was a time. Really soured the experience for us. If we had known, we would have eloped and had a party to celebrate. But we’re coming up on 10 years, have a gorgeous child, and continue to love one another through all the ups and downs in life. And watching my now husband go off on my mom that day boosted my mood, making our first dance joyful as he conveyed his group of friends was pulling her aside in another room to tell her to tone it down or be escorted out ❤️😍

Family Drama We got this letter in the mail, have no idea who sent it

Post image
12.3k Upvotes

This letter was mailed to my house in an envelope that had no return address and our address looks like it was written with someone’s non dominant hand. As you can see the names of who it is from have conveniently worn off. It’s addressed to my husband, his brother, and spouses. Not only is the letter infuriating on its own but it’s not even true! We DID buy gifts for the last two family weddings both me and my brother-in-law’s fiancée bought gifts for them that are obviously from both of us as a couple. But here’s where it gets weird. We have NO idea who it’s from because the one family member that is getting married in 2 weeks swears they didn’t send it and is horrified that someone would send it and there is no one else in my husband’s family that is engaged or planning a wedding!

Edit to answer a few commonly asked questions and statements

Did I receive thank you notes? Yes I did…did I keep them?… no. One wedding was almost 2 years ago and the other was over 3 years ago and I don’t typically keep those kind of things. I never thought I would have a reason to tbh..

What did I gift? A dishware set that was on the registry for one wedding and money for the other one. I’m not sure what my brother-in-law and his fiancée gifted but she did sent to evidence of their gifts to my MIL who is investigating this note further.

Did the envelope have an area code? Yes it did but unfortunately we all live in the same state and the zip code is the general area most of his family lives in.

It must be the MIL- well the first thing I did was send this to my own mother in law who was PISSED to say the least. She immediately confronted my husband’s aunt because that was our first guess as well. His aunt was out of town when it was sent and was horrified by the letter. She swears she didn’t send it, she even called my husband and pointed out that if she had a problem with us she would confront us to our face not through an anonymous letter.. which is true, she can be blunt. We also aren’t even attending the upcoming cousins wedding and already RSVPd a while ago that we couldn’t make it and she’s aware of that so it wouldn’t make sense for them to send this letter.

My mother in law has the letter and envelope now and is trying to handle this a bit more discreetly, although I don’t disagree that we should just post it in a family group chat… I will update when I find out who sent it but like I said in the original post no one else is engaged or planning a wedding that we know of…

Horrible Vendors There were thumbtacks in my water glass

My sister got married this weekend. It was absolutely beautiful, she planned it all herself and it was amazing. Almost no drama with anyone (guests or wedding party), food was good, photographer did an absolutely AMAZING job, it was awesome. I was a bridesmaid and it was so much fun, everything went smoothly…until dinner.

We got to the hotel for dinner, and I was at a table with my parents, family friends, and my brother. It obviously had a water glass, which I drank from periodically throughout the night. All well and good until I came off the dance floor to get a sip (by then it was getting low) and glanced at it thinking “it’s weird that there’s still ice in there, it’s been a couple hours.” I looked closer and it was not ice. There were 4 clear thumbtacks sitting in my water glass. Luckily I didn’t drink any.

By that time I was two margaritas and a large amount of champagne deep, so I thought it was more funny than anything. I showed it to two of the friends who were sitting at our table thinking “hey look at this silly thing that happened to me,” and they did not see the humor in the situation. For context, these are two pretty big middle aged guys who take no shit, one of which was in the army and the other in the coast guard, both very close with our family. They were like “this is unacceptable” and went to find a manager. Meanwhile, I just wanted another water glass, figured they’d handle it, and left to go dance some more.

I come back and the manager is standing next to one of the guys, holding a fresh water glass. She apologized profusely and I just laughed it off and took the water and that was the end of that. Not the worst thing that could happen, and not a disastrous, wedding-ending event, but still a little crazy and we still can’t figure out how the thumbtacks ended up in the glass. I wouldn’t say the vendor was horrible as the rest of the evening went fairly smoothly, although the DJ did not play the playlist my sister had given him (that he had requested!), but the songs were all bangers so no one really minded. Other than that and the priest reading the wrong passage during the ceremony, there were no issues.

We all had a great time so I’d consider it a success, I just thought the whole thumbtacks thing was a little wild and worth sharing.

Wedding Party Landlord asked my husband and I to be in their wedding party

So this was ages ago, but I still think it was one of the most bizarre weddings ever I ever attended.

My husband and I were looking for a new apartment and came across a nice two family. The landlords (not married) and their two-year old son lived on the first floor and we lived on the second floor. We became friendly, but we were only living there a year when they asked us to be in their wedding party. We thought it was kind of awkward, but we honestly weren't sure how to say no and it not get uncomfortable.

Well, they planned a HUGE church wedding and reception. She picked an incredibly expensive bridesmaid dress in my absolute least favorite color and it did not look good on me IMHO. Again, I didn't want to be difficult, so I didn't make a fuss.

Her MOH was her soon-to-be SIL, and a friend I never met. The groomsmen consisted of his brother, a friend, and my husband.

Her mother was an A1 biotch. She wanted no part of the planning, but complained about everything. About two months before the wedding, the bride had a huge fight with the groom and he left the house for two days and the SIL threatened to not be in the wedding.

One month before the wedding her mother called me and said that the MOH hadn't planned (or paid) for a shower and she wanted me to organize (and pay) for one. That's where I drew the line and said absolutely not. I reminded her a shower is to help a bride prepare her new home. They already lived together, had a child together, and owned a home. If she wanted her daughter to have a shower, she could plan and pay for it. Needless to say, her "shower" consisted of a BBQ with me, my husband, her father and his wife (not the mother), and the groom's brother. Whatever.

The morning of the wedding, the little one was in rare form from the start of the day. He was supposed to be the ring bearer, which consisted of him walking down the aisle in a tuxedo, sucking on his bottle, and screaming throughout the entire ceremony. I looked at my husband and like he could read my mind "don't pick him up and take him in the back - he's not your responsibility."

The one moment I did feel bad for the bride was when she went to give each of the mothers a rose, but her mother was a no-show at church. I found out later she threatened to not come if the father brought his new wife to the wedding. He brought her. I found out later the mother went right to the reception to wait for everyone to arrive.

Another awkward moment was when my husband and I were trying to decide on what to put in the card as a gift. He said "how about our rent check." lol

After the wedding, they drove home with us b/c they failed to arrange for the limo to bring them home. I helped her get out of her dress and that was it. Very awkward.

A year later we moved out and I heard the following year they were divorced. A total mess from beginning to end.
