Enshrouded 1.0 - Launch Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp7PZXkyxxY194
u/Maine_Made_Aneurysm 13h ago
Enshrouded did something I don't think I've ever seen a game do before and that's adding fully functional water physics to a game that did not have it at the beginning.
Likely it was already integrated with the engine before they made the game.
But when they added the water in the update there was just so much shit you could do.
It amazed me how just how much it improved the level of creativity I could have with base building.
Base building was already super interesting because of how small you could go with fine detailing. Then you could suddenly do underwater bases or bases with aquaducts or fountains and stuff.

u/Ubsurv 13h ago
I dont think water was integrated into the engine since they literally made the engine for this game. The enshrouded community basically begged for water so they made it happen and blew it out of the park honestly.

u/Maine_Made_Aneurysm 11h ago
I was one of the people begging for it honestly.
It was always sunny and the shrouded areas always felt off without rain so I very much wanted weather added to the game.
The rain actually collects in areas with water update so they had to create a way for players to let it drain.

3
u/azlan194 11h ago
I think No Man's Sky is also like that. Initially theres nothing you can do in the water. Then they added underwater constructions and vehicles in later update.
2
u/xalibermods 10h ago
The biggest difference is you still can't do anything with water in No Man's Sky.
1
u/Maine_Made_Aneurysm 11h ago
Kinda, i don't think water actually existed in enshrouded before they added it though.
As someone who has a very limited experience with coding but who's played a shit ton of different games. It just feels borderline unheard of for developers to add full on water physics to a game that was already that far into development.
The only game that seems similar in hindsight is minecraft with how long it's development cycle was.
It reminded me of how I felt playing minecraft when that first took off almost 20 years ago
2
u/azlan194 7h ago
Yeah, with Minecraft, its definitely the update that brought Redstone and Piston since movable block was not a thing previously.
2
u/iusedtohavepowers 10h ago
It was super odd that the whole map had no water anywhere on it. At least that I remember

I really like that you can just build on to the pre-existing structures in the game and essentially bring a dead old town back to life.
12
u/miasmic_cloud 11h ago
The building in this game is incredible. I get a lot of videos suggested in YouTube of people showing off their builds and it's absolutely mind-blowing what you can do in this game.
Two in particular I can remember was someone who built a massive tree-house base and another who built an entire sprawling castle on top of these super tall mountains in the game.
And I'm like dang, look at my rectangle house with the roof that doesn't line up for some reason.
2
u/Elegant-Presence8596 11h ago
I dug into a mountain and created my version of the Mines of Moria, even made a huge bridge over a massive chasm to do the bridge of Khazadun. It was a lot of fun.
4
u/Packrat1010 8h ago
You should give Portal Knights a try. My favorite build was my husband and I more or less renovating a destroyed castle.
4
u/BetweenTheRoots 6h ago
I appreciate the recommendation
3
u/Packrat1010 6h ago
They're actually the same devs! I forgot about that until after I commented. Maybe there was some overlap on the level design philosophy there.
1
u/Austounded 6h ago
Why didn't I think of this, I built a town from scratch in a ravine. Very satisfying work but takes forever.

Kinda forgot about enshrouded. Pretty cool, I don’t know why it didn’t hook me to play early this year. I’m usually into this kind of thing
21
u/joestaff 14h ago
It came out right around the same time as Palworld or Valheim, I think
25
u/PromiscuousScoliosis PC 13h ago
Palworld and valheim are several years apart lol
And I don’t think I played enshrouded on launch. Think I picked it up in like January this year
Edit: wow I didn’t realize enshrouded has been around since 2024 that’s crazy. Yeah looks like is did come out same month as palworld in January 2024
Valheim was 2021
13
u/TheDirtyBubble69 13h ago
The 1.0 releases are one month apart
1
u/PromiscuousScoliosis PC 13h ago
1.0 is almost irrelevant now that games are sold and playable for years before that. “Early access” might as well be the regular release
7 Days to Die had hard copies being sold in GameStop for YEARS before their “1.0 full release”
11
u/mildly_anonymous 12h ago
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. I’d assume the people who wanted to play valheim or palworld were playing it the years it was in early access, not just waiting until the day it 1.0 to have interest in it. Especially palword was a cultural phenomenon before its full release. Valheim had a pretty significant modding community before full release.
→ More replies (1)2
u/PromiscuousScoliosis PC 11h ago
Idk man. It just seems to be that “1.0 release” should be viewed as basically just a big content update, not “alright, now it’s out for real!”
Except for a situation like BG3, where the early access was actually the first little bit of the game. It was really a long demo more than early access. But a demo that you paid a good chunk of change for LOL
Like I loved palworld and Valheim and 7 days to die, but it wasn’t like 1.0 took it from basically a demo to “wow, now it’s a full game!” It was a full game before they just dropped a big content update
1
u/Justhe3guy 5h ago
No it came out 3 years after Valheim and ‘almost’ exited early access before it with a landslide more features and content added in the much smaller timeframe

u/AsinineArchon 11h ago
I tried it a couple years ago and it was alright but felt a bit shallow. Hoping 1.0 added some depth
28
u/AbheyBloodmane 14h ago
I dropped many hours into the EA. Will our characters transfer over from EA to 1.0?
23
u/OneRFeris 13h ago
Yes- but if its been more than a year since you played, just start over.
You can always load your old character into your new world, and drop your backpack upgrade, glider, and grappling hook off for convenience.
1
u/AbheyBloodmane 8h ago
That's not a bad idea honestly. Basically any gear worth porting over, keep. Everything else start fresh.
1
u/OneRFeris 7h ago
I would refrain from transferring combat equipment.
Personally, if I go too long without finding a combat upgrade, I start feeling irritated. If I gave myself high level gear at the start, I'd make that feeling a guarantee.
1
u/AbheyBloodmane 7h ago
I'm the opposite. I'll probably bring all of my combat equipment anyway. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Do the player characters still have the build of a hobbit?
9
u/HisDudenesssss 9h ago
There's apparently a new toggle to make your character have normal proportions now
9
u/Sarothu 12h ago
Neat! How much larger is the game's map now compared to its initial early access release size?

Could some longtime players illuminate me on how solo friendly this is? As a dad with a job I just don’t have time to rope friends together for this, so I’m curious about this aspect. I don’t mind a bit of a grind though.
10
u/SadroSoul 10h ago
Been playing since EA launch. It's very solo friendly. The game has many difficulty sliders to modify the experience including things that affect combat (enemy aggression, numbers, health) and the grind (gather more or less resources per action, speed up factory times, etc.). You can really tune it to how you want to play and drop the difficulty if you find a quest or boss too difficult to do solo.
As the other person said, story quests are server based, but they did add a way for a player to re-do a quest that was already completed on a server. If you're just solo, that won't matter.
Truly a fantastic game and I can't recommend it enough. The changes the developer has made since EA launch are truly astounding (huge and diverse new biomes, fully simulated water to mention just a couple). And the 1.0 changes look amazing. They've hit almost everything the community has been asking for. I have a lot of faith in the devs to keep this game going and improving.

u/scott32089 5h ago
I played until the snow biome, and had an AMAZING time. could not put it down. Told myself I’d shelve it and come back after 1.0. Literally only game I tore myself away from to save the rest for later. Perfect single player survival romp.

u/Joshatron121 3h ago
I did the same thing! It seems to be a pretty common thing with this one. It's very good - super excited for tomorrow.
2
3
u/Arafelll 10h ago
In my opinion it's better solo. The quests are server-based so if your friends come on and do a bunch of questing, you come on and the quests are gone and you don't get (most of) the rewards. I think their working on fixing this, I haven't seen if they've done so in 1.0 though.

u/TitsTatsNKittyKats 10h ago
I thought they already fixed this in a previous version?

u/JackFunk 10h ago
I started playing a couple of months ago and am solo. It's great. I find it better than Valheim in that there is more to do and the grind is less. Building is fun and exploration is great.
1
u/TheSharpestHammer 9h ago
I played ~100 hours solo and ~50 with friends. It's very soloable, and quite fun, especially with the sliders so you can fine tune the difficulty.
1
u/xaradevir 4h ago
I only played it solo and enjoy it a lot, the main thing I did was disable dropping items on death.

u/Wuyley 11h ago
For those of you playing this on a controller on PC, how does it handle?
I just spend so much time at my desk for work so anytime I can play on a steam deck / controller is a bonus for me.
2
u/miasmic_cloud 11h ago
Works and feels great on a controller on PC.
Obviously things that might require a fine touch like building are a tad better on mouse and keyboard but I've had no issues with a controller.
2
u/SadroSoul 10h ago
Seconded. Been playing with a controller since the EA launch and haven't had any issues. Even fine-grain things like placing single blocks in a build work well.
2
u/TheSharpestHammer 9h ago
It works very well with a controller. All of my playtime is with a controller.
4
u/Steelkrill 10h ago
Heard about this but haven't tried it yet, is it good?
5
u/SadroSoul 10h ago
It's fantastic. The game is absolutely gorgeous with very diverse environments, the exploration is fun, the combat is sufficient (and should be improving in 1.0), and the crafting/building system is really in-depth. I've never been interested in base construction/building in games like these but I've spent so many hours expanding and refining my mountaintop village that current spans four flame altars (the things you place that govern where you can build).
They only negative for me is that the story is pretty minimal. The quests are mainly to guide you through the biomes and lore is delivered mostly in letters and notes found in the environment. There are a few cool nuggets, but the story is definitely not the main selling point here.

1
u/DashingMustashing 5h ago
Definitely ranks in the top 3 of the genre for sure. If you're into building/exploring games you will absolutely love it.
11
u/otterpoppp 14h ago
played this game co op on a whim. realized how much content there was and how fun it was and now we're 120+ hours into it... and still not done. we finally built a fancy new base. i totally recommend if you're in to open world survival craft games and like playing co op. i will say that singleplayer would be pretty meh, it's definitely enhanced by multiplayer.

I’ve just started Dune Awakening but Enshrouded has been at the top of my list for awhile now. Should I finish Dune before starting Enshrouded or just jump straight in?
1
u/frequent_bidet_user 11h ago
I'm literally doing the same thing, been playing Dune the past 3 weeks having a blast about to finish steel tier, got my classes unlocked. I am going to continue playing Dune (I own enshrouded) here's my rational; I think big monumental updates usually come with their fair share of bugs and you can usually wait a few weeks to a month for some updates. So I figure Enshrouded is gonna be in a great spot to pick up after I've had my fill of Duning.
Here's the thing too lol I also really like RuneScape Dragonwilds, great time to be a fan of the genre. I ended up putting RS down for Dune but I fully want to go back to that also.
1
u/Kommander-in-Keef 11h ago
Can you “finish” Dune? Also from what I understand the endgame can be a hundred hour journey to get to.
4
u/ZurinArctus_ 11h ago
For me it's a part of HOLY TRINITY of survival-action-rpgs: VALHEIM-PALWORLD-ENSHROUDED
5
u/Akabaneist 10h ago
Is the performance passable now?
6
u/SadroSoul 10h ago
Performance has been improving throughout EA, and it they have even more performance improvement in 1.0. They released a ~10min video focusing on their custom engine and performance optimizations ahead of release.
I've also played it on my Steam Deck and it works well enough for short sessions (25-30 FPS)

Jumping on this conversation, would you guys recommend Enshrouded or valhiem to a group of 4 friends that play games together once a week?

u/Lemesplain 9h ago
Valheim is an absolute slog at times. Difficulty spikes are brutal in each new biome, you’ll rarely get a moment of peace to gather resources, and you’ll almost certainly be ambushed by a sea serpent as you struggle against uncooperative winds. That sea serpent’s goal is to delete the hours you spent gathering ore and sink it to the briny depths.
Enshrouded gives you a wing suit and says, “let’s go flying weeeeeeee.” You’ll eventually unlock a grappling hook and there’s a double jump in the skill tree.
Enshrouded does have difficult parts, but the general vibe is a good fun time. Valheim’s vibe is an eternal struggle against an unfair and uncaring world.
Both games are good, but they’re good in very different ways.

I ragequit Valheim at one point because of the base attacks. I think it was the bats.
They flew in and killed all of my tamed 2-star boars. That was literal weeks worth of work to find, capture, feed, and domesticate … all deleted in an instant.

I don’t even think it qualifies as “aggro range,” when the game just spawn in new mobs already aggroed onto you.
Night time in the forest is insane for the number of mobs that come flying out of ever nook and crannie
1
u/Batbuckleyourpants 9h ago
Valheim feels far more aimed at Coop.
2
u/Lemesplain 9h ago
Having multiple people can definitely help ease the difficulty spikes… but it means gathering 2x, 3x, 4x the materials for everything.
Ran into that issue with my group recently. We did a Valheim 1.0 run, and the swamps were terrible. Each crypt had like 2 muddy piles of iron. Solo, it would've been enough to gear up for bone mass. But as a group, we ended up sailing across the whole map to find enough.
1
u/Slow_to_notice 17m ago
Yeah this has always been an issue with Valheim sadly, as much as it is technically co-op friendly, it just also really isn't with just how expensive damn near every recipe is...

watchu on about valheim is cake in terms of survival games. Soulmask is just a better game in general imo and then u have green hell
4
u/SeanAker 12h ago
Valheim definitely grabbed me a lot more, I played a fair bit of Enshrouded but I kinda forget the general gameplay because it didn't really jump out at me. It's not bad from what I remember, but I'd definitely recommend Valheim.
Valheim's main sticking points are being kinda resource-grindy and the bosses being spongy, but those are both mitigated a lot with multiple people.
2
u/-haven 11h ago
With Valheim and that little of time I would highly suggest changing the server settings to increase the various drop rates/ore through portal. Even with tons of EA hours into Valheim we still increased our 1.0 rates on top of having more playtime together.
I don't recall if Enshrouded let you do the same. It's been a year since playing it's EA. We had put a hold on playing once they gave us a 1.0 release timeframe back then.
Both have been fun playing around with a group.
1
u/Justraxx 11h ago
I'd recommend enshrouded. Plenty of things to do in short periods of time. There are essentially quest to save npcs and progress the story, whereas valheim is a boss rush game, the only way to progress is to call the boss, beat it, go next boss. And getting around, and exploring is much more fun in enshrouded. Valheim is slow walking, or slow boating.
1
u/SadroSoul 10h ago
Can't speak to Valheim, but a group that plays together regularly is the target audience for Enshrouded IMO. All story quests are server based and guide a group through the game's story and progression (but you can re-do a quest that has already been completed on a server if you missed a week). Plus some of the fights (especially if you up the difficulty settings) really come alive when you have a party with a good mix of magic/healing, melee, and range.
1
u/malexj93 7h ago
Enshrouded is much better for such an infrequent meetup. Valheim is very slow, great for people that spend several hours playing games many days a week, and for groups that like to asynchronously work towards shared goals. A group like that will tear through Enshrouded in a week. My group of 4 played 1-2 days a week, for like 5-8 hours at a time, and finished (EA main quest, not 100%) in about a month with 70-90 hours each. About the same investment in Valheim got us maybe halfway through what was out at the time (2023) and progress felt extremely slow.
1
u/oxedei 7h ago
I havent played Enshrouded since some health regen spec made you invincible, but if youre only playing once a week I'd probably not pick Valheim unless your play session is multiple hours long OR if you play scattered throughout the week, as you can buy a server for Valheim and just leave it up and let people join by themselves and do some progression.
It's a very slow paced game
1
u/MovingOnward2089 4h ago
Enshrouded feels much more like a whole world with places to explore and a history to learn, Valheim was fun but once you’ve seen one plains or mountain biome you’ve seen them all.

Played Enshrouded in EA, haven’t played since NPCs were added to bases.
It was undeniably the best survival game I’ve played. The building mechanics were outstanding, the co-op elements were fun, and I enjoyed the combat as far as survival games go.
My only issues were that the quests felt more like tasks rather than genuine accomplishments, and the max level glider (while valuable) made traveling across the map an insanely easy task.
Would love to come back to this one and sink more time in. Curious about all the changes.
3
u/lordraiden007 11h ago
Did they ever fix the atrocious combat? No hitstun for enemies, terrible "parry" timings, borderline cheat mode magic class, useless ranged class, repetitive enemies, etc.?
2
u/SadroSoul 10h ago
1.0 seems to be handling a lot of that criticisms. Mages went from OP in early EA to annoying to play and now they are tweaking them again to have more utility (CCs, AoEs, more diverse attacks).
I've been a Ranger the whole time and the overall bow gameplay hasn't changed too much, but they've added some interesting skills.
They made a point to highlight the increasing diversity of enemies in the 1.0 path notes. There's a new enemy faction in the new biome with 14 new enemies, and they added that they've added 37 new enemy types as a whole to the game. Which means that there are 23 new enemies added across the existing factions. Should be a good buff to enemy diversity.
1
u/DashingMustashing 5h ago
Pretty much yes to all of that. Some in past up dates and some coming to 1.0.

u/adkenna PC 13h ago
Timed exclusive to PS5 or permanent? I own this on PC but have held of playing it whilst I wait for it to come to Xbox to crossplay with my friends.
2
u/SadroSoul 10h ago
There's no exclusivity deal. The devs chose to defer the Xbox launch to early 2027 to make sure they could get the game to run well on it. There's no crossplay yet either - the devs say they want to do it but didn't give a timeframe.

Love this game, have about 500hrs in it cause of multiple playthroughs. I wanna play again but they need to add some kind of end game. Once you finish all the story missions, the world is just dead. I also wonder if they increased the size of your base. Havent played since update 7. I was putting portals next to each other to make my base bigger but was still limited.

Does this game have that annoying crafting pryamid like Subnautica?
Example: to get an axe, you need 4 iron bars, to get a bar you need 4 ingots each, to get an ingot you need 4 iron nuggets, to get a nugget you need 4 iron ore?
7
u/Holzbesteck 13h ago
There is a crafting system like that, but it didn't feel that annoying, because lower tier tools can be used to mine several of the higher tier tools. There are like 7 different axes that require different ingredients, but you don't need axe 5 to mine stuff for axe 6, axe 3 or 4 will do.
