Is the performance passable now?

Performance has been improving throughout EA, and it they have even more performance improvement in 1.0. They released a ~10min video focusing on their custom engine and performance optimizations ahead of release.

I've also played it on my Steam Deck and it works well enough for short sessions (25-30 FPS)

Current pre-1.0 barely hits 15 FPS on all low in a built-up base with water on Steam Deck. It's absolutely not playable. I hope there are some tangible improvements in 1.0.

This is not my experience, and I have a large base (4 altars) with several water features including a large waterfall.

That said, the 1.0 patch notes do specifically call out "Improved performance on handheld devices, low-end graphics cards and the Steam Deck."

What are your settings? I have about 10 large buildings with all NPCs and doing anything water related pretty much grinds the game to a halt while neither CPU, GPU, nor memory are fully utilized.

Settings are all either Performance or the feature is turned Off. Resolution scaling is at 80%.

I just ran through my base and was getting somewhere between 20-25 FPS most of the time with occasional drops as low as 15. Not great, but I still consider it playable.

I hope that the performance upgrades do improve Steam Deck performance because I honestly like playing the game in that format.

OK, so your performance is not that far off. My base might be a bit bigger or just hitting some edge cases. I guess we'll see in a few hours if there are any improvements.
