What chemicals exactly? We do know that all food is "full of chemicals" right?? This is a funny video but the message sounds like complete bull shite.
Off season vegetables are usually just shipped in from other parts of the world with different growing seasons. It has a much bigger carbon footprint than local, seasonal produce and that is indeed bad for the planet. But the idea that it's somehow poisonous to eat is just wild fear mongering

u/Accurate-Tiger4298 1d ago

Strawberry season for Florida is December -April, with peak crop around March.. Which is why they are out around Valentine's Day. Strawberry season for California is April-August, with peak crop around June.
Strawberries from Aug-Dec are almost always imported, but we produce in season for a little over half of the year.

u/frogguts198 1d ago
Seriously, one time I was up in Oregon during the summer and I got to eat the reddest, juiciest, most delicious, local home grown strawberries I’ve ever had in my life.
They were almost blood red, not pink/white like most out of season, mass grown, store bought strawberries at the local Kroger chain. I need to go back there again next summer and try to get some more.
13
u/sheetset 1d ago
i dislike those huge white-on-the-inside strawberries! they’re so bitter and not at all sweet. 317
u/Jagjamin 1d ago
A variant of bok choy in Thailand is called phak kwangtung hongte. Kwangtung is the Thai word for Guangdong. They have Guangdong bok choy and Hong Kong bok choy (phak kwangtung Hong Kong), Hong Kong bok choy is a bigger variant / cultivar.

To be fair, it's Federal regulations that make pharma commercials the way they are. You're required to state the side effects, and you also can't show people doing anything extraordinary, like a rheumatoid arthritis patient water-skiing, because that would represent a "take this medication and you'll be able to waterski too" promise. So you have to portray the patient doing the most mundane stuff possible so as not to overpromise.
11
u/DYMongoose 1d ago
They don't regulate enough. Prescription medicine should not be marketed directly to patients who lack the knowledge and education to understand what the product is - hard stop.

Tbh kids taste the bitter compounds in vegetables more than adults because we lose that as we age. She may have an overtuned sense of bitterness. Others have said steaming, but also try sweet glazes or complex sauces. Sweet counteracts bitter, and drowning the bitterness in other flavors can also help.

I started eating broccoli when I was little by having my mom pour melted cheese on them. She would compare it to macaroni and cheese. That slowly morphed to a little butter and dryer parmasean cheese, and then broccoli all by itself. Love love love broccoli to this day.
Similarly, I started eating spinach and carrots on my own, because I wanted to imitate popeye and bugs bunny respectively.
12
u/lewd_robot 1d ago
Anything green tastes bitter to her.
She might have the gene that makes them taste extremely bitter.
There's not much you can do to get around it other than try to find things that mix well with the bitter greens. But even then, the bitterness might overpower everything else.
On the plus side, people with this gene also frequently can't stand chocolate because it's pretty bitter too.

Try everything. Work through each vegetable in various ways to prepare it.
Start with anything simular that they might like and try to prepare with the same flavors.
IE: Like pickles? cucumbers with a light brine or vinigarett...could also just pickle your own.
My best success has been with fresh and steamed. One of my pickiest loves steamed broccoli. Only found this out through constant trials.

Cucumber salad- slice it and brine it with water, soy sauce, ginger, and sesame oil. If she likes you can add red onion, red pepper flakes, or anything else spicy she likes.
16
u/cinemachick 1d ago
Is it a taste thing or a texture thing? I personally don't like onions unless thoroughly cooked because I don't like the crunch in my head. I thought I hated peas because we only had canned ones growing up, once I tried steamed I loved them! Turns out neurodivergency lends itself to being picky about this sort of thing.
Also, you can supplement with multivitamins and fiber powder while you get her used to vegetables. Threatening her with fasting only makes her associate hunger/unpleasantness with veggies and could lead to disordered eating later in life

I have this issue, I’m 45. I’m both autistic and a super taster, I can’t eat or drink anything bitter or it comes right back out. That applies to alcohol, coffee and green vegetables (except lettuce with a sweeter creamy dressing). I know how absolutely terrible it is for my health not to eat it, but I can’t physically do it. The only positive is, I don’t have a drinking problem.
→ More replies (1)5

I’m on the spectrum but according to my dna I am lacking a certain gene that would allow me to taste really bitter things. So alcohol tastes fine to me, but I can’t digest it and it makes me really sick. So, also no drinking problem here but for a different reason lol.
Weird how varied our bodies can be, even under the same umbrella of neurodivergent tastebuds/flavor preference.

I do stews rather frequently, having the vegetables cooked with other things that are more palatable does a lot for the flavor. Texture might be an issue for her if she's neurodivergent.
I like to add a bag of mixed vegetables (carrots, corn, green peas, green beans) to chili, once cooked the vegetables have a texture similar to the beans and taste like the savory tomato sauce.

Broil them in the oven with lots of butter, bacon bits, garlic, and onions. Let them cook until the outer layer is almost black, then drizzle in balsamic reduction or if you’re my grandma, maple syrup.
They taste like candy and have a much nicer texture than steamed
