Discussion ššÆļø Musicians whose careers stalled after Covid
Camila Cabello was huge 2017-2019, but her popularity really dwindled post Covid. What other musicians were popular in the 2010s but fizzled after 2020s?Ā

u/memopepito Jun 15 '26
Thereās a lot of rappers that were really blowing up before Covid that I never hear about anymore- like Lil Baby, Roddy Rich, and A Boogie for example.

Chainsmokers fall off was more because their style died, not because of covid specifically. The house/edm/house pop kind of ran its course even by 2019
130
u/freshoffthecouch Jun 15 '26
That could be said for a lot of them, Covid was also the end of that decade and music has changed pretty significantly

The music of Chainsmokers, for me, hold so many emotions that is hard to specify. It followed me through the best days of my life. University years, being on an exchange program in North Sweden.
Paris was my favorite music even before that. Then I met a girl with who I fell in love so deeply I will never do again, simply because Iām not a teen anymore. We lived together for half a year and were sweethearths - I still think of those days fondly, even after everything bad happened later.
Her favorite band was also Chainsmokers, and her favorite from them was also Paris.
Iām sad they didnāt stay as popular as they were around COVID. Their etherian style is so calming and moody Iām yet to find a similar band.

43
u/StanIsHorizontal Jun 15 '26
This makes me think which artists from the late 2010s actually survived covid. A lot of the older artists that are still around I think were already well established.
Covid really flattened the landscape by putting a lot of young careers on ice and then they had to compete with all these new acts and the established ones, who were somewhat insulated but also had more reason to make sure they got everything they could out of their careers
Come to think of it, I think this same phenomenon happened in a lot of job markets

Whatever the reason or someone's feelings, including my own, her objective commercial peak was Badlands and I would be a psychopath going to every tour date if she still made music even slightly resembling that era.
During American You(th) she was just smoking cigarettes, listening to music, and snacking with fans. Had a mysterious and strange aspect. But, the music is boring and the culture surrounding music & concerts is just not what it was a decade ago, people in a box office line circa 2015 would spit in your face hearing the price of the same artists now. So, my interest has just waned.

Not an artist who fell off bc of covid, but an album: Chromatica by Lady Gaga. It was supposed to be THE club music album of summer 2020, especially for the LGBT community. "Rain on me" with Ariana Grande had me so pumped for Gaga Summer lol but then covid happened, and their line "I'd rather by dry, but at least I'm alive" took on new meaning

It's really a shame how the up-and-comers of the late 2010s had their careers stall out because of covid killing their momentum.
Which has also led to an odd side effect of late 2000s/early 2010s musicians still being relevant, long after the next wave should have pushed them out of the limelight.

I've heard some similar stories from actors/actresses who signed multi-picture deals with a studio, and couldn't get out of the contract till they fulfilled the allotted requirement, which included -- in their cases -- a couple of bad movies with scripts they knew were awful from the get go. And because of that, they missed out on opportunities to do other movies that were extremely successful.
