Moments when New York feels small?

• Upvotes

I lived in a small town and the other day ran into a high school classmate in the hallway at work. We share the floor with a PR company she just started it. It’s surprising how often similar things happened to me in the 10 years I’ve been here, and got me curious about other small-world instances.

in search of vegetarian wings

hello all. i went to a college with a beloved establishment known as d.p. dough. while i wasn’t a calzone girl i did particularly enjoy d.p. dough because they were a rare spot that served vegan wings (known as dunkers 🕊️) with a variety of different flavor options (buffalo, sweet and spicy, etc). iirc they were seitan wings which is personally my favorite kind of vegan/vegetarian wing. wings are the only meat item i “crave” since leaving meat behind 15 years ago and i do think it mostly has to do with the sauces but that’s beside the point. the point is that i cannot for the life of me find a place in nyc that sells vegetarian WINGS (not breaded tenders). yes i can just buy daring chicken and make them at home but sometimes i just want to order a 12 piece and have it delivered to my door because i live in new york city and i’m spoiled and that seems like something i should be able to do.

i live in queens but work in midtown and am often in brooklyn near park slope so willing to commute. i’m also not vegan so vegetarian only will work. please help!

tldr; looking for vegetarian wings recommendations.

Voting before 11/3

• Upvotes

Not sure where to ask this, but here it goes. I have never voted by mail but looks like I might need to and hoping those who have experience doing this can give me quick advice.

I have to travel starting 10/23 to TX and I won't be back until 11/4. I'm registered to vote in Manhattan. Looks like I can request a ballot to vote early. Anyone know how long it takes for ballot to arrive to you (if I request it today, hoping I get it before I depart on Friday night). And for those who have voted by mail, is it as simple as completing and dropping off at any post office?

(also, I wouldn't normally travel at this time but Dad's in the hospital in TX and this is when I can go)

Does anybody know why the Empire State building is flashing different colors and strobe lights tonight?? It is after midnight on October 16, 2026. The website says that it is supposed to be official white, and yesterday was magenta. Will post a video.

Dog owners.. how do you clean dog poop when on a walk?

What products do you take with you on walks to clean up? Especially if your dog has diarrhea? Trying to be a courteous owner

I usually try to wait until my dog poops at my building’s potty area before going on walks, but she gets so excited that she still poops on the walk sometimes.

I have dog poop bags that I use to clean up, but wondering if there’s anything else I should buy or bring that’s useful?

E-bikers and delivery drivers

I almost got hit by delivery drivers twice today in Brooklyn and I’m really frustrated. One was an e-biker who ran a red light and the other was Vespa. I was in the cross walk both times and luckily I’m very aware and was able to jump out of the way. Is the city doing anything to control these delivery guys? It’s out of control and it’s been getting progressively worse.

Looking for a whimsical looking place to take grinch/whoville themed photos

Would prefer it not be a backdrop or have to travel to Florida :)

I did it a few years ago by setting up a few props at a park, but I want somewhere at looks more whimsical, if possible

I live in Southeast Queens, but willing to travel up to an hour or two away.

Hip hop/lofi bar

Is there anything in the city that is similar to Incredible Coffee in Tokyo? A place to have drinks while listening to records, but also not a sit-down, reservation type of place. TIA

I’ve read about the infamous straw hat riot, and the knocking people’s hats off across Manhattan is famously referenced in ch.1 of Moby Dick. How big of a menace generally was knocking people’s hats off in pre-hatless times in NYC?

Rent/use a typewriter?

I’d like to use or rent a typewriter (classic is ideal) for a few hours to type up a wedding sermon. I’ve been asked to officiate a wedding and I’d like to give the typed copy as a framed gift to the newlyweds. Located in Brooklyn but I can travel anywhere in the city. Thanks!

Mandarin speaking community resource groups?

Hi, I have an aging parent who does not speak English. Unfortunately, I'm not living in the same state as her to help out when needed. Are there any organizations out there that she can go to for help with things like seeking affordable housing or applying for a home aid? I'm also open to senior living apts that would have mandarin speaking staff. Thanks in advance

Making the most out of living here

Hi! I’m 25(f) and I’ve lived in nyc for a little over a year now for work (ues). I’m very introverted overall and have a hard time with getting myself to try new things and talk to new people. I feel an immense amount of uneasiness cause I live here, which is something I’ve wanted, but struggled to actually take advantage of living here and doing new things on a regular basis. I have done things here and there on the weekends or when people visit, but as far as my day to day, I find myself just being at home, as much as I want to go out and try stuff. I spend a lot of time in Queens cause I have a field based job there, but I feel like I’m in such a state of like existentialism of what I want in life and not knowing enough of what I actually enjoy, to the point where it’s paralyzing and I have no idea how to start just actually living here. Most of my days end up looking the same. Is this normal

Can anyone give me some locations of „vintage“ photo booths in the upper west side or near Central Park? I want something like a picture strip of 4 pics.

Thank you ❤️

Lost wallet - mail to address, or MTA lost and found?

So someone left their wallet on the train. I’ve gotten different opinions on what to do, trying to decide between from mailing it to their address in their ID, to just giving it to the MTA lost and found. In the past I tried returning to the bank but they refused to take it, and it seems from research the post office also discourages dropping off wallets. The wallet has some vital docs in there so I’d feel better giving the owner the best chance at getting it back

Can I legitimately claim donations money as income on housing connect?

Long story short, I recently went from working 2 jobs to just 1, and now my income puts me in a weird spot with NYC Housing Connect. I make too much for one AMI category but not enough for the next one, so I basically don’t qualify for either studios or 1 bedrooms. It’s just me on my application, too.
I was wondering, if I started donating plasma for extra money, would that count as additional income that I could report to Housing Connect? Could it help push my income into the next AMI bracket so I can qualify for more apartments? And how would they verify it as income since there’s no payslips?

Wine & Cheese bar

Back in 2022 or 23, I was taken on a date to a wine bar/restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen where they would serve you a spread of cheeses paired with the wine you ordered. I went to go look it up, and it has since closed permanently. Is there anywhere else in the city that does the same thing or something similar? It was such a cool place and the staff were all so knowledgeable. It was called Caselulla.

How can I celebrate Halloween alone in NYC without feeling lonely?

I'm 24 and my parent has always been strict so l'm not allowed to ever go anywhere. These strict rules have prevented me from making friends. But this year l'm definitely wanting to go out bc Halloween is on a Saturday and I want to have fun. The thing is I will be alone without friends so how am I supposed to have fun when everyone else will be out with their friend groups? Plus it's NYC so everyone is really gonna be with their groups. Is it not worth going out bc I won't have anyone to hang out with? Any advice? Or places to go?

NYC Therapy Scratch therapy/ASMR massage in the city?

Hi! This might be kind of niche but I’m obsessed with head/back scratching ASMR and would looove to go to one of those sessions. Does anyone know of a place aside from whisper wave that offers something like that? I’m surprised I can’t find anything online in the city!

Dental Abscess and Fistula

Hi all! Anyone have recs for a good dog dentist? My dog has a dental abscess (potentially a fistula) that my regular vet said goes beyond his skill set. He recommended going to an actual dog dentist 🤦‍♀️. Thank you!!
