Hispanic Heritage Month: El Mariachi’s Ofrenda

Hi all! Today marks the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15th - Oct 15th) so I thought I’d share the Ofrenda (offering) that my mom sets up each year at the restaurant to celebrate and honor the tradition of Día de los Muertos. Día de los Muertos is primarily celebrated across Mexico on Nov 1st and 2nd and is a celebration of life that blends together indigenous tradition with Spanish-Catholic tradition. During this time, it’s believed those who have passed over from the physical world into the spiritual realm can return to celebrate with family and loved ones over food, drink, and music.

A large part of this tradition is the Ofrenda. This is an offering made in the form of an altar to the loved ones being celebrated. Our Ofrenda at El Mariachi is decorated with:

- Marigolds (bright orange flowers used to help guide the spirits to the altar)
- Calaveritas de Azúcar (tiny sugar skulls playfully decorated with frosting)
- Our Lady of Guadalupe (patroness of Mexico)
- Papel Picado (traditional Mexican folk art made by cutting intricate designs into delicate tissue paper, represents the element of air)
- Candles (to help illuminate a path for the spirits, represents the element of fire)
- Jarritos de Barro (traditional clay pottery mugs, represents the element of water)
- Pan de Muerto (“Bread of the Dead”, sweet Mexican bread that represents the element of earth) will be displayed closer to Nov 2nd

In the center of the altar is an old photograph of my mom’s parents. My grandparents passed away in 2008 and 2009, but when my mom opened the first restaurant in 1996 they were both by her side helping the business get off the ground. They also lived in the same household as us growing up and helped raise me and my siblings. They introduced me to much of my Hispanic heritage.

Along with the Ofrenda, I have included pics of the dining rooms with our fall decor, our seasonal special Apple Cider Margarita, and one of my favorite dishes on the menu: Pollo El Mariachi (grilled chicken topped with Oaxacan cheese and our creamy chipotle sauce). I hope you all will stop by and check out the Ofrenda, food, drink, and atmosphere in person.

If anyone has any pics of their Ofrendas or ones they’ve seen in the past, please feel free to post them below!

Who chose Kroll to investigate Dan Pickett—and what was the AMC Board thinking?

Albany Med’s board says it hired Kroll to conduct an independent review of the allegations involving Dan Pickett and their impact on the health system. That choice deserves an explanation.

The New Yorker documented Kroll’s work for Harvey Weinstein. After one accuser recorded Weinstein admitting he had groped her during a police sting, her settlement required her to turn over her devices to Kroll so copies of the recording could be removed. The reporting also describes Kroll supplying Weinstein with information about accusers and journalists. The recording survived, other women spoke out, and Weinstein was ultimately convicted in cases involving other accusers.

That history does not prove Kroll will handle Pickett’s case the same way. It does make the board’s choice astonishing for a hospital system asking employees, patients, and the public to trust its investigation of a sexual assault allegation. A Columbia Memorial nurse has already raised that concern publicly.

Who proposed Kroll? Did the board discuss its Weinstein work before hiring it? Is Kroll being asked to find facts about Pickett’s conduct and leadership, or to measure Albany Med’s exposure? Can employees speak without fear of retaliation? Will the board release a meaningful account of what the investigation finds?

At some point, the board itself must be held accountable—not only for this decision, but for the pattern of decisions that has left many Albany Med employees questioning the direction of the organization they serve. Who is actually driving these decisions, and where are the other board members when choices like this are made? These are prominent people who put their names behind Albany Med’s leadership. They should be prepared to answer for it publicly.

The people best positioned to demand that accountability may be the employees themselves. If employees believe Albany Med has made one troubling decision after another, they may need to stand together, speak with one voice, and make clear that they are not willing to accept a culture of secrecy, poor judgment, or disregard for their concerns. No employee should feel ashamed of or embarrassed by their affiliation with their institution, yet that is the risk when leadership repeatedly undermines trust and morale.

Pickett denies the allegation, and the investigation should follow the evidence. But the board cannot simply stamp “independent” on a firm’s contract and expect everyone to stop asking questions. It chose this firm. Now it needs to explain why.

I went on my daily walk Saturday and made a new friend! I reached out and it crawled onto my hand. It decided to stay with me until I came back around to my house and put it in one of the flower pots outside. I continued on my walk and when I came back again, I was looking for the katydid but didn’t see it. Then it jumped out from the flower pot and onto my jeans!

WTF is going on at NYS DHSES?

CW: Harassment, toxic management, and zero accountability

I’ve been talking to a few people who work or worked at the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES), and the stuff coming out of that agency is wildly concerning. I’m posting this because people there are terrified, frustrated, and running out of options. To give some context on the culture leadership has set: • Former Deputy Commissioner Rayana Gonzales was investigated for workplace harassment before leaving the agency earlier this year. • Joe Collorafi, another high-ranking official, was previously investigated for sexual harassment years ago, yet managed to return and is now sitting near the top of the ladder. You can Google these and their guilt is public.

The Current Issue

The immediate problem involves another manager at DHSES (let’s call him See Pee). He was on probation until earlier this year after getting promoted to a higher role. During his probationary period, multiple women reported him for sexual harassment. Despite official reports being filed, nothing seems to have been done. He remains in charge and is reportedly on a massive power trip—acting extremely rude, condescending, and hostile. In front of witnesses, he even outright threatened retaliation against an employee just for asking a question about comp time. He also used to take things from women's desks and hide them or mess with them like taking the batteries out of their mouse. See Pee also shows outright favoritism toward his previous team. Women in the office shouldn't have to come to work to be stared at and have inappropriate comments made about their bodies by a married boss with a kid. But See Pee answers to Joe and no one is surprised that leadership hasn't solved this—From what I heard HR is also inept and made matters worse.

Why "Just Quitting" Isn't the Answer People are leaving work in tears. Some have left from this but finding a new job isn't easy, and simply quitting doesn't fix the problem—it just leaves the door open for new hires to be targeted and harassed next.

My Questions for the Subreddit: • If reporting/HR is ignoring sexual harassment and retaliation threats within a state agency, what external channels actually work in NYS? (e.g., NYS Inspector General, EEOC, Union reps, Media, Governor's office?). Reports were filed with another outside organization too but resulted in no change and now can't be done because of their time limitations. • Has anyone dealt with accountability issues like this at state agencies before, and what was the most effective way to push back safely? Appreciate any advice or insight from folks who know how NYS state government processes work!

Albany Common Council to vote on Resolution for NYS Legislature to authorize the City to enact an earnings tax on all commuters who work in Albany.

Thumbnail albanyny.gov
62 Upvotes

I guess when Albany can't keep its house in order, they take it out on the commuters. And with most NYS and government workers, they have a firmly captive audience because folks will not give up their entire pensions because of this. It will however deter new government employees from wanting to work in Albany.

Language from the resolution here:

"Council Members Johnson, Balarin, Anane, Adams, Hoey, Jones, Lumpkin, Robinson,

Williamson introduced the following: RESOLUTION 113.102.26R

A RESOLUTION OF THE ALBANY COMMON COUNCIL REQUESTING THAT THE NEW YORK STATE LEGISLATURE GRANT THE CITY OF ALBANY AUTHORITY TO IMPOSE A TAX ON THE EARNINGS OF NONRESIDENTS WHO WORK WITHIN THE CITY.

GENERAL PURPOSE OF LEGISLATION

This resolution calls on the New York State Legislature to pass enabling legislation allowing Albany to levy a tax on the earnings of nonresident workers within the City. Approximately 60% of Albany’s tax value is exempt from taxation.1 Many of the largest sources of this tax-exempt property value are also some of Albany’s largest employers, including New York State’s offices and agencies, college campuses, and hospital facilities. Albany sees a massive influx of nonresident workers every workday, with some reports estimating the daytime population of Albany to be nearly 70% higher than its resident population.2 Much like City residents, nonresident workers benefit from the public safety and emergency response investment, sanitation services, infrastructure, and the municipal works of the City of Albany.3 Unlike City residents, however, they do not contribute to the funding of these cost-intensive services through an annual property tax. By enabling Albany to levy a tax on the earnings of its non-resident worker population, the New York State Legislature will open a new revenue stream for the City that will benefit the City threefold. First, it will increase City revenues at a time of grave financial uncertainty, helping the Applyrs Administration in its historic efforts to close the existing fiscal gap. Second, it will shift a portion of the tax burden for the City away from residents, who already face the financial strain of rising property taxes and other necessary fees. Finally, it will more evenly distribute this reallocated portion of the tax burden to nonresident workers in the City, whose large number will allow for a fractional contribution of earnings per individual to total a significant contribution to the funding of these essential municipal services."

Looking for Activity Buddies and New Friends Around Albany!

Hi everyone! I'm hoping to expand my social circle and meet more people around the Albany/Capital Region.

如果有會說中文的小伙伴,歡迎來找我玩! I'm also open to meeting people from all backgrounds.

I'm especially interested in meeting people around my age who enjoy doing things together, such as volunteering, trying new activities, playing sports, going on walks or hikes, and checking out local events.

I'm happy to explore places around the Capital Region, roughly within a 30-minute drive from Albany. I'd especially appreciate free or low-cost activities that are easy to join regularly, since I'd love to make getting out and socializing a regular thing.

I also tend to prefer daytime activities or events that wrap up earlier in the evening, since I like to get enough rest.

I'm hoping to meet people who enjoy getting out and doing things together, rather than only chatting online, and hopefully build genuine friendships along the way.

If this sounds like your kind of thing, feel free to comment or message me! I'd also love to hear about any fun local activities or volunteer opportunities. We could start with a group activity in a public place.

Looking forward to meeting some new people! :)

Does anyone have any info on this cat? It is super friendly and comes around a lot but it doesn’t have its ear clipped and I can’t tell if it is a male/female neutered or spayed. Any info would be great! There is also another orange cat that I see frequently

So, it definitely feels like a Spring Day, right?

Just as the title says: the air feels very much like the snow is melting somewhere. It is very humid, again, and our first frost is sometime this week. Maybe. Supposedly. This weather pattern is absolutely fucked.

October 2026 marks the 81st anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a federally recognized initiative that celebrates the achievements of individuals with disabilities in the workforce. Now in its fifth year, New York State expanded this annual recognition into Disability Rights and Employment Awareness Month (DREAM).
