Events Title: Things going on in Jersey City this week (Oct 14–18) — food crawl, live music, art, Halloween stuff & more

Hey JC,

Back with another weekly roundup. Little late again this week lol, but there's actually a decent amount going on between now and Sunday.

Saturday especially looks pretty packed. There's a Japan Festival at Exchange Place, a Latin food crawl, some Halloween stuff, live music, art shows, and a bunch of other things.

Also shoutout to everyone who's been dropping events in the comments. Found a few more things from you guys that I added below.

Here's what I've got so far:

Wednesday, Oct 14

  • Hamilton Park Farmers Market — 4–7 PM at Hamilton Park. Usual Wednesday market with food, produce, baked goods, local vendors, etc.
  • The Silent Stage: Reeds in Rhythm — 6 PM at Glenn D. Cunningham Library. Live clarinet performance where everyone listens through wireless headphones. Pretty interesting concept actually. Info
  • Jersey City Cabaret: Halloween Show — 7:30 PM at Brightside Tavern. Halloween-themed live music. Tickets are $15. Details

Thursday, Oct 15

  • Raíces con Ritmo: Salsa Stories — 6–8 PM at Andco Grove. Free event about salsa, its history and culture.
  • LezFest Salsa Night — 6–8 PM at SuLuna. Salsa dancing with instructors from Salsa Fever On2.
  • Latin American Film Storytelling — 6–7:30 PM at Lafayette Library. Part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
  • Ghost of Uncle Joe's rehearsal show (Departed Souls) — Thursday night. Someone mentioned this in the comments. Apparently they're doing music from Dolly, Wet Leg and The White Stripes. Check the organizer for the exact time.
  • Clay for Cats — Free Art Preview — 6–9 PM at Atacama Clay Studio (273 New York Ave). You can check out the cat-themed ceramics before Saturday's charity auction. The studio also has a viewing window Friday. Double-check with the organizer before heading over.
  • RENT: The Musical — 7:30 PM at Art House Productions. Final weekend. Thursday is listed as sold out, but worth checking for last-minute tickets.
  • The Laugh Tour — 8:45 PM at Dorrian's Red Hand in Newport. Stand-up comedy, tickets around $25.

Friday, Oct 16

  • Regular Paper Issue 1 Launch Party — 6:30–9 PM at SMUSH Gallery (340 Summit Ave). New independent magazine coming out of JC. They're having music, food, readings and giving out copies. This one sounds pretty cool. Info
  • Game Night at Zeppelin Hall — 6–9 PM. Games and drinks at the beer garden. Worth checking their calendar before heading out.
  • Clay for Cats — Free Art Preview — 10 AM–2 PM at Atacama Clay Studio. Another chance to see the ceramics ahead of Saturday's auction. Hours shared by the organizer, so worth confirming.
  • Ghost of Uncle Joe's rehearsal show (Pet Shop) — Friday night. Another one from the comments. Music from Wolf Parade, Bryan Adams, Prince and Gorillaz. Check for exact details.
  • RENT: The Musical — 7:30 PM at Art House Productions.
  • The Laugh Tour — 7:30 PM and 9:45 PM at Dorrian's Red Hand.

Saturday, Oct 17

Saturday probably has the most going on.

  • Run The Square JC — 9 AM, meeting at Whealth Kitchen. 3.6-mile group run followed by breakfast. All paces welcome.
  • Japan Festival 🇯🇵 — 10 AM–6 PM at Exchange Place. Someone brought this up in the comments, and somehow I completely missed it in the first roundup. Adding it here. Still worth confirming details with the organizers.
  • Free Costumed 5K — Liberty State Park. Another one from the comments. Apparently there's a free costume run happening Saturday. Haven't confirmed the start time yet.
  • Sabor Food Crawl — 11 AM–2 PM, starting at the Main Library (472 Jersey Ave). Guided food crawl stopping at three Latin-owned businesses: Gemini, Ranchero Taqueria and Feliz Deliz. Food samples included. Registration required, and it may be waitlist-only now.
  • Latin Food Fair — 2–5 PM at the Main Library. Ten Latin-owned food businesses with samples. Separate from the food crawl, so you don't have to do both. Details
  • Halloween Yappy Hour — 2–5 PM at 902 Brewing (101 Pacific Ave). Basically a Halloween party for dogs lol. Costumes, pet vendors, drinks, etc. Optional $25 drink package. Info
  • Intro to Salsa Dance — 3 PM at Àbáké Books & Cafe (2 Webster Ave). Beginner-friendly salsa class. No experience needed.
  • Cat, Stick, Easel, Moon — 3–6 PM at SMUSH Gallery. Art exhibition featuring paintings by local artist Rachel L. Bedder.
  • Clay for Cats — 6–9 PM at Atacama Clay Studio (273 New York Ave). Someone shared this one, and it's actually a pretty cool idea. They're auctioning off 30 cat-themed ceramic pieces made by local artists, with proceeds going to JC CatWatch and Tiny Tigers NJ. There's live music, food and drinks too. Bidding starts at $10, and admission is $65. If you're into cats, art, or just want to support a good cause, worth checking out. Tickets
  • RENT: The Musical — 2 PM and 7:30 PM at Art House Productions. The afternoon show is sensory-friendly. Check current ticket availability.
  • The Laugh Tour — 6:30 PM and 9 PM at Dorrian's Red Hand.

Sunday, Oct 18

  • Black Girls Shoot Too Photo Walk — 1–3 PM around Jersey City. Free photo walk, good opportunity to meet other photographers and creatives. Check with the organizer for the meeting spot.
  • RENT: Final Performance — 2 PM at Art House Productions. Last show of the run.
  • Cat, Stick, Easel, Moon — 3–6 PM at SMUSH Gallery. Another chance to check out the exhibition.
  • Live Irish Music at The Hutton — 5–8 PM in the Heights. Traditional Irish music. Might be worth making a reservation.
  • SMUSH WORK/SHARE — 6–8:30 PM online. Artists can share what they're working on and get feedback. Sliding scale, $15–$30.

That's everything I've come across so far.

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of stuff though. Especially smaller events that mostly get shared through Instagram stories or random flyers around town.

Also, for anyone who's seen me post these before, I'm one of the people working on YourScene. It's an app we're building to make finding local events a little easier.

We're adding more Jersey City and NYC events every week, including stuff people mention in these threads.

If you want to check it out: https://yourscene.app

Contact: [support@yourscene.app](mailto:support@yourscene.app)

Still working on it, so if something sucks or you think we're missing something, genuinely let me know. That's part of why I've been doing these roundups.

And if you're hosting anything this weekend, drop it below. Doesn't have to be some huge event. DJ sets, house shows, food pop-ups, community meetups, whatever.

Appreciate everyone who's been contributing to these. Hope you all have a good weekend!

AMA AMA Announcement: Aaron Weiner, independent candidate for Hudson County Commissioner (District 4). Tuesday Oct 20, 6 PM ET

Hi r/jerseycity!

We’ve got an AMA coming up with u/aaronweinerD4 AKA Aaron Weiner, who’s running as an independent for Hudson County Commissioner in District 4.

Here’s how it works: drop your questions in this thread anytime before Tuesday. On Tuesday, October 20 at 6 PM ET, Aaron will come on and answer them, and he’ll also take new questions live for about an hour and a half. We’ve done it this way before and it worked well, since it lets people who can’t make the live session still get their questions in.

Here’s Aaron in his own words:

I live in the Heights and I’m running as an independent. Outside of the campaign, I’m a physical therapist, data analyst, and anatomy and physiology instructor. I’ve spent a lot of time during this campaign knocking on doors and talking with people around the district, and one thing I hear pretty often is that people either don’t know what county government does or aren’t sure why they should care about it. Fair question.

County government touches more of our daily lives than most people realize, from the county budget and taxes to roads, parks, healthcare, education, transportation, and other services. I’ve also been trying to be clear about what a commissioner can actually do and where the county has to work with Jersey City, Trenton, or someone else.

So ask me whatever you want. My background, why I’m running, what I think the county should be doing differently, something on my platform, or even something you think I’m wrong about.

Keep it civil. Tough questions are fine, but the usual sub rules still apply.

Drop your questions for Aaron below and see you Tuesday.

Saigon Cafe

Almost 30 years downtown. This place is a true neighborhood gem. Few places with actual fresh food and family recipes, and this place is one of them. If you haven’t been, go.

Apparently they the land lord is raising the rent and another hotpot restaurant with terrible lighting is moving in. Very sad to see a quality restaurant leave downtown.

Discussion The new ShopRite F*cks Hard, and Solomon’s Flesh is Ripe for Harvest

• Upvotes

Today, I had the pleasure and luxury of rolling my 800 pound body into the newly opened ShopRite. The clean, polished escalators paired PERFECTLY with the brutalist design of the interior 🥵🫃🫃🫃

Truly…. It was 💋 CHEFS KISS 💋 perfection…

Now, we as a city can rightfully claim that our ShopRite is superior in size, luxury, and strength to the inferior and much dirtier Hoboken ShopRite, and our glorious Jersey City grows ever closer to pillaging and conquering our pathetic tech bro neighbors. 😍😍🔥🔥🫃🫃🫃🫃

As it was written in the ancient Jersey City prophecy, Solomon, who was the third and final ruler of holy lands, is destined to be the final ruler of Jersey City 😭😭😭💅👁️👄👁️🫃🫃🫃🫃

This can be seen by Solomon’s ABSOLUTE FAILURE as a mayor, which was foretold eons ago. His disregard for public safety and sanitization by removing the public trash cans 🚮 signals that his supple and tender flesh is ripe for sacrifice under the next blood moon 🌕 🩸🫃🫃🫃🫃

Very soon… 🔜 by the pure and testing RAGE of Jersey City’s inhabitants, we will storm the hollow mayors office and feast upon is supple flesh 🤤🙏🙏😭💅💅🫃🫃🫃🫃🫃

SOLOMON WILL beg for our forgiveness through a pathetic pre-recorded PSA….. but we will provide none. 💦💦💦🥵🥵🥵🙏🙏💅💅🫃🫃🫃🫃

After Solomon is finally consumed… our frenzied thirst for blood will spill into Hoboken, and soon we will FINALLY conquer their weak and fragile city, and turn it into our vassal of pure PLEASURE 😍😍😭🫃🫃🫃💅🫃🫃🫃🫃🫃

Morris Canal Park Dogs

As a dog owner myself, I love seeing so many dogs enjoying the wonderful park we’re lucky to have in our neighborhood. However, over the past couple of weeks, it’s become increasingly difficult to walk my leashed dog due to the growing number of off-leash dogs. My dog loves other dogs, but after some scary experiences with off-leash dogs, we no longer allow him to interact with unfamiliar dogs in public. Having unleashed dogs throughout the park that do not have reliable recall has really impacted our ability to enjoy the park and I have noticed it with other leashed dogs/owners as well.

By no means do I want to prevent dogs from meeting up with their doggy friends and I enjoy seeing other dogs play together. In the past this has not been an issue as many off-leash dogs and their owners gathered toward the top of the park, which allowed me to comfortably walk my dog along the perimeter and give us space.

Just a friendly reminder to please be considerate of those walking leashed dogs and anyone who may be uncomfortable with unfamiliar dogs approaching them. We all want to enjoy our beloved park, and being mindful of one another helps keep it a safe and welcoming space for everyone.

Is It Safe???? Teenagers posing as electricians

• Upvotes

Hi guys, I moved to jersey city about a month ago and I live around journal square. Today at around 6:30 pm, two teenagers (there might’ve been more, I’m not sure) rang the bell and claimed they were electricians. They looked pretty young, especially the one that rang the bell, well dressed too but he didn’t look like an electrician.

Anyway, he rang the bell, said he was an electrician and asked me to give him access. I didn’t but he still tried opening the door. He tried around 3 times and then he looked at his friend and just walked away.

I’m not sure how to feel about this since I live alone and my living room faces the main road.
All I know is I never called for an electrician and something seemed off.

Has this happened to anyone before?

Greenville, Jersey City

Hey everyone! I’m considering moving to Greenville near Danforth Ave and would love to hear from people who live in the area. I’ve been hearing a lot of mixed reviews. For context, I’m a 26-year-old woman planning to live on my own.

Specifically South Greenville near Danforth Ave and Bayview Cemetery, around the Ocean Ave/JFK Blvd area.

I currently work in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, so I’d be commuting to NYC regularly. I’m curious about the safety, walkability, and things to do nearby. I don’t have a car at the moment, so being able to get around easily is important to me.

I found an apartment I really like, but I’m trying to get a feel for the neighborhood before making a decision. Would you recommend living in this area?

I’d appreciate any honest opinions or advice!
Thanks!

Discussion Meanwhile at the new ShopRite in Metro plaza

Okay technically it's not Metro Plaza anymore it's Hudson Exchange and I went late 10pm to check out the store on opening day.

and it was nice. Bigger. Taller inside slightly. But it definitely seemed larger. it smelled slightly of fresh paint.

Here are some pics.

First pic is the shopping cart escalator down which is out of order.

Second pic is a wide shot of the lower level interior.

There's an olive bar which IMHO should have matching clear plastic lids that cover these ginormous buckets of olives.

And some pretty baked goods.

It's nice. The floors are polished concrete, and the aisles are mostly a lot wider. you could see how they're sort of riffing on the same layout.

fruit and vegies when you come in just much wider. dairy on the far wall. freezer sections right before that. soda before that. but now other drinks are broken out to a different aisle which is now simply 'soda'.

I originally liked that metroplaza's SR was smaller then the bayonne shoprite but whatever.

life is change.

Following the Shoprite opening, Everton is now fully open. And the Modcop location opening is aiming for mid 2027. Not sure about the Japanese restaurant.

(also yes I know the rent prices are high, but these are market rates for new "luxury" buildings downtown, and no you cannot find similar amenities for these prices in Manhattan. Brooklyn/LIC yes).

Detroit-based electrical engineer looking to relocate to NYC/Jersey City — seeking referrals or recruiter connections

Hey everyone! I’m currently based in the Detroit area and looking to relocate to NYC or Jersey City. I have a master’s in electrical engineering and experience in electrical project engineering, utility SCADA systems, industrial automation, and controls.

My background includes coordinating engineering projects, developing scopes, working with vendors, and collaborating with cybersecurity, gas control, and measurement teams. I’ve also worked on real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance projects.

I’m interested in Electrical Engineer, Project Engineer, SCADA/Controls Engineer, or Field Engineer opportunities in NYC and the surrounding New Jersey area.

If your team is hiring, or you know a recruiter who works with these roles, I’d appreciate a referral or introduction. Happy to share my resume and discuss my experience through DM.

Thanks for any leads!
