I'm someone who carries a small pocket knife daily (think Swiss Army knife or grandpa's pen knife). I'll be in NYC a bunch in the coming year and thought I'd check into knife rules because I feel naked walking around without one. I mean, how am I going to cut my apple or open a box?
From what I understand (reading here and elsewhere), knife laws have softened a bit and people can legally carry many types of knives up to 4" (the Swiss Army knife is less than 3). But it ALSO (same link) looks like people cannot bring ANY knife on transit, no matter how small. And since I don't know when I'll be walking or ubering vs. transit, that means I don't really know when I can carry it with me.
So NYC ... Is it really the case that pocket knife carrying New Yorkers who use multiple modes of transportation don't exist? Or do they just flaunt it and hope for the best?
My plan was buy a knife at a kitchen or sporting good store, use it for the duration of time in the city, then drop it in the mail to myself on my way to the airport. But if I can't just stick said knife in my pocket or backpack and leave it there for when I need it, I guess I'll skip it. Though that would really make my on-the-go dining or package opening a real bummer.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
