How can I celebrate Halloween alone in NYC without feeling lonely?

I'm 24 and my parent has always been strict so l'm not allowed to ever go anywhere. These strict rules have prevented me from making friends. But this year l'm definitely wanting to go out bc Halloween is on a Saturday and I want to have fun. The thing is I will be alone without friends so how am I supposed to have fun when everyone else will be out with their friend groups? Plus it's NYC so everyone is really gonna be with their groups. Is it not worth going out bc I won't have anyone to hang out with? Any advice? Or places to go?

Mandarin speaking community resource groups?

Hi, I have an aging parent who does not speak English. Unfortunately, I'm not living in the same state as her to help out when needed. Are there any organizations out there that she can go to for help with things like seeking affordable housing or applying for a home aid? I'm also open to senior living apts that would have mandarin speaking staff. Thanks in advance

What’s the cheapest towing (company) in Brooklyn?

I need to get my car towed from Coney Island (11223) to Canarsie (11236). I kinda just want to get an idea of how much I am going to spend on that and see if you guys know anyone that’s better and more affordable than just whatever I find first on google. I need it today within like the next 2-3 hours.

Looking for bar in Lower manhattan or Brooklyn where I can drink alone and sad.

Hey everyone, I'm really going through such a rough patch right now and I don't want to go home after the gym. I just want to cry where people don’t know me lol ( The cheaper the better for more drinks , but the price doesn’t matter ;) )

Edit:
“ I just want to cry” in a way that if I shed a tear before I walk in people are not concerned lol.

New Landlord Kicking Out 30 Year Tenants

Hi there, not sure if this is the right forum but a friend from college mom and sister is being evicted from their apartment in Flatbush that they’ve lived in for 30 years. Their landlord died and the kids sold the building to a company that wants everyone out.

They’ve given them an alotted time to find new housing but are having a hard time bc NYC housing has soared and they had a mom/pop landlord. The mom is late 60’s and he wants her to be comfortable. He reached out to his network to for housing leads within their budget.

This is where I’d like insight. Wouldn’t the company need to buy them out and give them a lump sum of money? I know multiple ppl who have done that on the landlord side and received on the tenant side. I don’t want to give my friend wrong information so am asking you guys.

Any advice is helpful. I feel terrible this is happening to him and his family. Sucks bc i know they aren’t the only ones !

Searching for a cozy spot to enjoy a warm cider

• Upvotes

Hi all! Looking for a cozy indoor spot to hang out and have a warm apple cider (or adjacent hot, fruity, non-alcoholic drink). I’m trying to find a place in Manhattan, anywhere from Columbus Circle down to FiDi. I know most people recommend the farmers markets, but ideally we have the option to sit sheltered from wind or cold. If the best choices are the markets, open to one where there is the option to take our drinks indoors nearby, if it does get too frigid.

Bonus points if the spot has games or doughnuts!

Mailbox Key

• Upvotes

I’ve lived in my apartment for seven years and last week, my super asked if he could make a copy of my mailbox key.

The building has 70+ units, and he says they should’ve always had a copy in case I lose my key, since they’d need it to replace the lock or would otherwise have to wait for the USPS delivery person to unlock the panel of mailboxes.

I’ve never lost my keys (really!). I’ve previously had mail keys that were engraved not to be copied, however, though my current key doesn’t have that.

Is it normal for apartment supers to have a copy of your mailbox key?

Searching for my wife’s favorite chips

My wife is originally from Colombia and there they have Margaritas chips instead of Lays. Her favorite flavor was chicken. She’s been pretty upset recently so i just want to surprise her with something she’s been wanting. I’ve searched a bunch but i cannot seem to find it anywhere. Wondering if anyone has seen it or knows anything similar.

NYC Photographer Looking for Assistant, Intern, or Second Shooter Opportunities

Hey everyone!

I’m a photographer based in NYC looking for opportunities to assist other photographers, intern, or work as a second shooter.

I’m particularly interested in event photography and studio photography, and I want to gain more hands-on experience working alongside experienced photographers. I’m hoping to learn more about lighting setups, studio workflows, client shoots, and how professional photography jobs are run.
I have experience with freelance photography and photographing events, and I’m willing to help with equipment setup, lighting, behind-the-scenes tasks, or other things needed on a shoot.

I’m open to paid opportunities and would also consider a short unpaid learning opportunity if the expectations and educational value are clear.
If you’re a photographer in NYC who needs an assistant or second shooter, or if you have advice on how to get started, I’d love to hear from you!

Has anyone been to Faces by AKJ NYC?

Has anyone had experience with Faces by AKJ in NYC, specifically with Amy Naing or Nicole?

I’ve been going there for facial balancing filler and recently started questioning the clinic because of their unusually low pricing ($1,290 for 4 syringes) and how quickly my results seem to fade.

I’ve also had a hard time finding independent reviews or information about the injectors themselves, which makes me a little nervous.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s been there, especially regarding their results, filler longevity, and overall experience. Positive or negative experiences welcome!

Is Queens Low Cost Veterinary Center an okay vet for a pinch?

I want a vet to check an issue with my dog, but I'm having money problems at the moment.

Doing some googling, the ACC and Google both say Queens Low Cost Veterinary Center are a low-cost option. $25 for an exam, $300 for dental. It sounds too good to be true.

Cute Halloween Sugar Cookies?

What the title says! I'm a sucker for a cute, holiday-themed frosted sugar cookie. You know, like these. Having a weirdly hard time finding them- although I do live in south Brooklyn and Tasty Pastry had some excellent ones! But no luck other than that so far.

Looking specifically for locations in Brooklyn or Manhattan. I'm hoping to wander around this weekend or next and look at Halloween decorations, so bonus points if the cookies are in a neighborhood that's got a lot of those up! Thanks so much in advance!

Wash and fold vs housekeeper

I live in a 1 bed in Manhattan with my partner. I pay $150 a week for a cleaner to clean the apartment, wash my sheets, towels and clothes in the basement laundry and change my sheets. I’m considering switching to a wash and fold service and biweekly cleaning at $100 to save $ and because I’ve had some issues with my cleaner ruining clothes. Finding it hard to estimate the savings but I assume I’d cut costs in half.

I haven’t used a wash and fold before so don’t know if it’s going to make my life better or worse. Looking for advice on whether I should stick with what I have or switch it up.

meal deals like tesco?

i live in nyc and have for over 20 years. i travel to uk often for work and love a 'tesco meal deal': a sandwich, a healthy snack, and a drink for under 8 dollars.

is there anywhere in this city that offers even close to that?

yeah the sandwich is premade and in a box, but quality (at least imho) is not like a gas station sandwich and much better than the premade 9 dollar sandwich i see at keyfoods (or its many diversely named 'upscale' versions).

something like this is what i hope to see out of the mamdani gov stores.

Where to buy shelf brackets? (Not Home Depot)

• Upvotes

EDIT: I have checked my local hardware stores, I’m specifically looking for a decorative option that’s also heavy duty and they only had basic black metal.

Hi all, I’m looking for heavy duty shelf brackets, preferably something a little decorative if possible, but would rather buy from a local store instead of a big box place. I know thrift stores sell these sometimes, but I’m on a timeline so don’t really have as much time to hunt. Any recommendations?

TIA!

Global Entry v Mobile Passport Control (MPC) at JFK

I've been satisfied with TSA Pre-check but it's about to expire, and I'm considering "upgrading" to Global Entry (which includes TSA Precheck). Wondering what people's experiences are at JFK with Global Entry v the free MPC app. I've never felt I needed Global Entry, since I usually fly into JFK and I get to skip the regular line with MPC. But it's been more than a year since my last international trip, so curious what recent experiences have been - both with using MPC v Global Entry at JFK, and with processing times/getting an interview scheduled for Global Entry.

My credit card will reimburse Global Entry or TSA Pre-check, so cost really isn't an issue, I'm just wondering if Global Entry is worth the extra hassle for getting approved. Versus if I just renew my Pre-check, it seems it's just a matter of clicking some buttons online and paying the fee.

I fly internationally maybe 1-2x per year, and about 2-3x domestically.

EDIT: You've convinced me! I'll get Global Entry. Thanks for the responses.

Is there a place to get free or low cost X-Rays or MRIs without health insurance?

I thought I sprained my hand a few weeks ago from a bad fall, but despite having regained full mobility since then, it still hurts a lot at certain angles.

I just want to find out if it’s broken or something worse, or if it really is just a sprain and I only need more time to recover. I have found a few options, but I want to know if there is a better option that was all inclusive (physician visit and x rays in the same building).

So far the only all inclusive option I’ve found is NYC Health+ Hospitals financial assistance program but I’m unsure how long that process will take before I can get an x-ray.

Even so, according to their chart, it’s still going to cost me at least $150 for an MRI, but I don’t see an option for X-Ray.

And if I do find a place to get X rays for cheap, it seems like I still have to find a physician to give me a formal referral to even get it.

Other options I’ve looked into:

CITYMD: Potentially $450 for the visit + X Ray

Charles B Wang Community Health Center and Institute.org offer income based or sliding scale fees if I need to get a physician referral, but they don’t do x-rays themselves.

Radiology Assist: Average price is around $65, but no virtual consultations available in NY so I’ll have to go to one of the above options first for a referral. That could take anywhere between 1-4 business days between doing both, so not ideal but is my current top choice.
