I made a new friend who recently got laid off and is living on unemployment. Real estate agent. Things were going great then we started to have disagreements.
The big one is our approach to dating. She's on the apps and constantly going on dates. Having fun dating until she finds her person. I personally gatekeep access to myself so I don't approach dating that way. She recently went out with this guy we met at a bar, twice her age, bicoastal, and she's not that interested in him. But she wanted the free meal. She was really excited and texted me about the date and that after they went to a venue. She told me I should loosen up. I personally find her comments disrespectful. This is something she has said often. Finally I replied back about my views. Fast forward the next day she's passive aggressively telling me about how good the date went and also she can't hang out because her unemployment didn't go through.
That day I was really busy and really could not give a damn about her dating life. I was swamped with work and honestly felt like her texts were a nuisance. I felt like she was trying to guilt me into my perceived judgements of her because she's on a tight budget and guys pay for things.
The day before that I mentioned wanting to get into skiing this winter. She said she wants to wait for the alps instead of going a few hours away. But I told her no reason to go to Italy and that's expensive for beginners. She told me she's already thinking about being a rich man's housewife.
I'm pretty independent and about my bag. I don't think men are a dwindling natural resource and I really really really can't rely on a man or entertain men for free perks. We haven't really been talking about I'm wondering if this friendship is worth salvaging
Even with a job. Budget and priorities are just interesting. Like I went shopping the other day for houseplants and she window shopped for a Chanel bag despite wanting plants too. When I mentioned I never owned a brand bag and it's not my thing she alluded that my tastes just werent elevated yet due to our two year age difference. 26 and 28.
Also if we go out to a bar, she wants the guys to be cute and interested in us for chance of free drinks and Uber home. I try to find things in her budget but even activities for free it under $50 she can't commit to. Constantly daydreaming about luxuries but never seems to buy anything. Just talk. I recently bought a new TV and linked her it because it was a great price. She seemed mad about me buying it in a way I can't explain.
I feel like we are compatible in lots of ways but her income level keeps her in a poverty mindset. I have had this problem with other pals and ultimately it led to jealousy or resentment that made me cut them off. I'm starting to feel like I should only make friends at and above my income/debt/financial level because even meeting woman with great income, sometimes they are spending like there's no tomorrow and maybe make 3x my income but have huge debt.
In a city like NYC where everyone mingles, what to do?
