Mandarin speaking community resource groups?

Hi, I have an aging parent who does not speak English. Unfortunately, I'm not living in the same state as her to help out when needed. Are there any organizations out there that she can go to for help with things like seeking affordable housing or applying for a home aid? I'm also open to senior living apts that would have mandarin speaking staff. Thanks in advance

in search of vegetarian wings

hello all. i went to a college with a beloved establishment known as d.p. dough. while i wasn’t a calzone girl i did particularly enjoy d.p. dough because they were a rare spot that served vegan wings (known as dunkers 🕊️) with a variety of different flavor options (buffalo, sweet and spicy, etc). iirc they were seitan wings which is personally my favorite kind of vegan/vegetarian wing. wings are the only meat item i “crave” since leaving meat behind 15 years ago and i do think it mostly has to do with the sauces but that’s beside the point. the point is that i cannot for the life of me find a place in nyc that sells vegetarian WINGS (not breaded tenders). yes i can just buy daring chicken and make them at home but sometimes i just want to order a 12 piece and have it delivered to my door because i live in new york city and i’m spoiled and that seems like something i should be able to do.

i live in queens but work in midtown and am often in brooklyn near park slope so willing to commute. i’m also not vegan so vegetarian only will work. please help!

tldr; looking for vegetarian wings recommendations.

Where/how do you meet new people irl?

I am 29F, South Asian.
I think I am fairly outgoing and funny but I hate making plans with a group of friends so I usually find myself alone at bars and restaurants. I am very, very used to it as an only child with some healthy levels of trust issues and self-reliance but it weirdly makes it harder to speak to strangers. I am recently single and I want to put myself out there and meet new people. I do smile but I am mostly left alone or they not even look?
I do get some attention on Hinge so it might not be my appearance. Maybe I am not going to the right places or maybe it’s because of my very evident wired earphones? Where do you go to meet new people? How does it work?

E-bikers and delivery drivers

I almost got hit by delivery drivers twice today in Brooklyn and I’m really frustrated. One was an e-biker who ran a red light and the other was Vespa. I was in the cross walk both times and luckily I’m very aware and was able to jump out of the way. Is the city doing anything to control these delivery guys? It’s out of control and it’s been getting progressively worse.

How much does a cat fecal sample cost at your vet?

I just spent about $130 so I’m curious. This was to test my kitten for parasites.

I’ve read about the infamous straw hat riot, and the knocking people’s hats off across Manhattan is famously referenced in ch.1 of Moby Dick. How big of a menace generally was knocking people’s hats off in pre-hatless times in NYC?

Making the most out of living here

Hi! I’m 25(f) and I’ve lived in nyc for a little over a year now for work (ues). I’m very introverted overall and have a hard time with getting myself to try new things and talk to new people. I feel an immense amount of uneasiness cause I live here, which is something I’ve wanted, but struggled to actually take advantage of living here and doing new things on a regular basis. I have done things here and there on the weekends or when people visit, but as far as my day to day, I find myself just being at home, as much as I want to go out and try stuff. I spend a lot of time in Queens cause I have a field based job there, but I feel like I’m in such a state of like existentialism of what I want in life and not knowing enough of what I actually enjoy, to the point where it’s paralyzing and I have no idea how to start just actually living here. Most of my days end up looking the same. Is this normal

NYC Therapy Scratch therapy/ASMR massage in the city?

Hi! This might be kind of niche but I’m obsessed with head/back scratching ASMR and would looove to go to one of those sessions. Does anyone know of a place aside from whisper wave that offers something like that? I’m surprised I can’t find anything online in the city!

Do you ever remember people you walk by on the street?

Maybe extroverts like remembering people's faces or details about others. Personally, I don't remember people.

Hip hop/lofi bar

Is there anything in the city that is similar to Incredible Coffee in Tokyo? A place to have drinks while listening to records, but also not a sit-down, reservation type of place. TIA

Searching for a cozy spot to enjoy a warm cider

Hi all! Looking for a cozy indoor spot to hang out and have a warm apple cider (or adjacent hot, fruity, non-alcoholic drink). I’m trying to find a place in Manhattan, anywhere from Columbus Circle down to FiDi. I know most people recommend the farmers markets, but ideally we have the option to sit sheltered from wind or cold. If the best choices are the markets, open to one where there is the option to take our drinks indoors nearby, if it does get too frigid.

Bonus points if the spot has games or doughnuts!

Does anybody know why the Empire State building is flashing different colors and strobe lights tonight?? It is after midnight on October 16, 2026. The website says that it is supposed to be official white, and yesterday was magenta. Will post a video.

Rent/use a typewriter?

I’d like to use or rent a typewriter (classic is ideal) for a few hours to type up a wedding sermon. I’ve been asked to officiate a wedding and I’d like to give the typed copy as a framed gift to the newlyweds. Located in Brooklyn but I can travel anywhere in the city. Thanks!

Lost wallet - mail to address, or MTA lost and found?

So someone left their wallet on the train. I’ve gotten different opinions on what to do, trying to decide between from mailing it to their address in their ID, to just giving it to the MTA lost and found. In the past I tried returning to the bank but they refused to take it, and it seems from research the post office also discourages dropping off wallets. The wallet has some vital docs in there so I’d feel better giving the owner the best chance at getting it back

What’s the cheapest towing (company) in Brooklyn?

I need to get my car towed from Coney Island (11223) to Canarsie (11236). I kinda just want to get an idea of how much I am going to spend on that and see if you guys know anyone that’s better and more affordable than just whatever I find first on google. I need it today within like the next 2-3 hours.

Can I legitimately claim donations money as income on housing connect?

Long story short, I recently went from working 2 jobs to just 1, and now my income puts me in a weird spot with NYC Housing Connect. I make too much for one AMI category but not enough for the next one, so I basically don’t qualify for either studios or 1 bedrooms. It’s just me on my application, too.
I was wondering, if I started donating plasma for extra money, would that count as additional income that I could report to Housing Connect? Could it help push my income into the next AMI bracket so I can qualify for more apartments? And how would they verify it as income since there’s no payslips?

Wine & Cheese bar

Back in 2022 or 23, I was taken on a date to a wine bar/restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen where they would serve you a spread of cheeses paired with the wine you ordered. I went to go look it up, and it has since closed permanently. Is there anywhere else in the city that does the same thing or something similar? It was such a cool place and the staff were all so knowledgeable. It was called Caselulla.

Mailbox Key

I’ve lived in my apartment for seven years and last week, my super asked if he could make a copy of my mailbox key.

The building has 70+ units, and he says they should’ve always had a copy in case I lose my key, since they’d need it to replace the lock or would otherwise have to wait for the USPS delivery person to unlock the panel of mailboxes.

I’ve never lost my keys (really!). I’ve previously had mail keys that were engraved not to be copied, however, though my current key doesn’t have that.

Is it normal for apartment supers to have a copy of your mailbox key?

Looking for a whimsical looking place to take grinch/whoville themed photos

• Upvotes

Would prefer it not be a backdrop or have to travel to Florida :)

I did it a few years ago by setting up a few props at a park, but I want somewhere at looks more whimsical, if possible

I live in Southeast Queens, but willing to travel up to an hour or two away.
