Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Your town / village board.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

School Bus PSA

We've been seeing more and more posts about school bus tickets in recent months. With schools starting up again I suspect we will begin to see even more questions. If you have questions regarding school bus tickets, please keep them limited to this megethread as we will be removing all posts moving forward.

Some information regarding the laws and some general guidance regarding school bus stop signs:
  • If a school bus has it's stop arm out on the same road as you, you must stop regardless of which side you are. This applies to two lane (1 lane each way) multi lane roads and divided roadways (e.g. Broadhollow road, William Floyd Parkway1, etc). If the stop arm is out before you pass the bus, expect a ticket.

  • If you are driving perpendicular to another road that a bus is stopped on (i.e. they are at or near a stop sign on a road you are crossing), you are not required to stop. Proceed with caution and be aware of any children that may be crossing the road to get to the bus.

  • If they are on a side road, school lot or driveway adjacent to the roadway, you do not need to stop. Proceed with caution.

  • Flashing yellow lights do not mean stop; they mean to proceed with caution and to be prepared to stop. If you see flashing yellow lights, slow down and anticipate the stop sign being deployed. Sometimes a bus is waiting for students to pickup and may sit with flashing yellow lights for a number of minutes, so do not stop and block traffic if the stop sign is not out.

Information pertaining to school bus enforcement can be found on the Suffolk County page here, and the Nassau County webpage here.

1 Note: There was some debate about this a few years ago. It is still a law, but there was a question regarding Suffolk County enforcement of the law.

Train Station mixed use Apartment buildings

My town is finally putting up this building after years of delays. We had gotten the 10 million dollar grant that many towns have gotten to redevelop downtown. Me, personally, I’m excited for it. My DT area is really run down and I’m hoping this will liven it up and bring new, young, money in.

My question is for those who have had this built in their towns, has it done anything for the local economy or changed anything in either direction about the character of your Downtown.

I’m aware that I’m posting this in the Land of NIMBY lol. But my town needs something like this IMHO.

This building went through A LOT of brand name changes ! Originally W.T. Grant/Grant City (fall 1972-December 1975), later Woolco (March 1977-January 1983), then Caldor (May 26th of 1983-April 1999), and finally Kmart (November 14th of 1999-October 20th of 2024), then the last full size one in the mainland United States. This store is now a Target: https://massmarketretailers.com/target-gives-a-preview-of-new-bridgehampton-n-y-store-ahead-of-opening/

Bar Patron Pleads Guilty to Arson

Paul Lucia, 60, of Islip Terrace, pleaded guilty to Arson in the Second Degree and other related charges for setting fire to Riley Fibbers in East Islip. The defendant was irate that he was asked to leave the bar by staff members.

“The defendant admitted to intentionally setting fire to a local business, risking the lives of staff and patrons inside,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Violent crimes such as this will never be tolerated. The prison term he now faces holds the defendant accountable for what could have easily turned into an enormous tragedy.”

The evidence at trial established that, on November 20, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Lucia was a patron at Riley Fibbers Pub & Restaurant in East Islip when he was asked to leave by staff after taking a picture of one of the staff members.

The defendant drove away in a white Jeep Patriot and returned at approximately 7:30 p.m. with a gas can and a lighter. Video surveillance shows that Lucia exited the Jeep and dumped liquid from the gas can near the rear entrance of the restaurant. The entrance was open and occupied by patrons and employees at the time.

Shortly thereafter, flames erupted on the premises as Lucia walked back to his vehicle and threw the gas can over a fence onto the adjacent property. He then immediately drove away.

Riley Fibbers incurred fire damage to an exterior awning and the kitchen. Thankfully, no one was hurt or injured.

A witness at the scene provided a license plate number for the Jeep that Lucia was driving. Those plates were found to have been reported stolen one week prior to the arson.

Detectives with the Suffolk County Police Department’s Arson Squad conducted an investigation and recovered the cap to the gas can from a flowerpot outside the bar as well as the gas can from the adjacent property. A certified ignitable detection canine from the Suffolk County Fire Marshal’s Office was deployed at the scene and indicated the presence of ignitable liquids in several locations.

The following day, members of the Suffolk County Police Department located the defendant driving the white Jeep on Sunrise Highway and initiated a traffic stop. Lucia was placed under arrest, and a lighter that was used in the arson was recovered from inside the vehicle.

LI Real Estate Best places to live

Hi everyone! My husband just got a job in Stonybrook and we were looking for the best places to live near that area; willing to commute up to half an hour to an hour! We are 25-29 and looking for lively, walkable neighbourhoods! We don’t have a budget, preferably more modern. So far we have looked into The Core at the Station Yards in Lake Ronkonkoma and The New Village in Patchogue. We would appreciate all the help! :)

Help me underatand LI traffic

Hello all!

I will be moving to long island for work. It will be around Amityville for reference. Which areas do ya'll recommend to live in to have a tolerable drive commute 30-45min that is more west. For example, how is hempstead, garden city, great neck, hicksville, etc. Google maps shows a range between 30m-1h15m. I cry. I'm accustomed to ~50min commute however I'd prefer below that.

Recommendation Wine tours

I’m looking to book a wine tour for about 14–16 people and would love some recommendations!
My husband wanted to rent a party bus and plan everything ourselves, but I was thinking going through an actual wine tour company might be easier.

I remember doing a few wine tours about 14+ years ago, and all we had to do was pay the driver and they took care of the rest.

Is that still how it works? Is it better to book through a wine tour company or just rent a party bus and plan it ourselves? Would love to hear any recommendations or recent experiences!

Golf lessons near Suffolk/Nassau

Beginner golfer here looking to get a good lesson, preferably not insanely expensive, basically need a lot of help with basic swing mechanics.

I am near the border of Suffolk and Nassau so looking around that area, I'm of heartland golf park in deer park since I work in that area, not sure about cost or any other pro at another range that might be a good fit?

any self serve (u pull it) auto junkyards?

i'm trying to find some parts for my car. most of the junkyards do it for you, which is way pricier than just paying a small fee and pulling the parts yourself. anyone know if there are any on long island? i couldn't find any. i know there are some in ct, but it wouldn't be worth it when factoring in gas and wear/tear costs.

LI Real Estate Home Price increases in just the last two years??

I know home prices have been nothing but extra loopy since COVID but what has happened in just the last two years?? I’m looking mostly in western Suffolk and there are houses sold 1-2 yrs ago that would go for 50-100k more today. With rising rates and economic uncertainty, this feels so backwards to me. Everyone says the best time to buy is now but with rapid increases like this, I feel like I’ll always be playing catch up

Question Why are are contractors allowed to buy homes and knock them down pricing out the actual families?

So obviously the housing market has been crazy for some time now but all over Nassau county so many contractors are buying homes, knocking them down and then rebuilding them to sell for 1.5 million. Why is this allowed? It feels like this shouldn’t be legal and prices out all normal families trying to buy their first home. How hasn’t there been any legislation to stop this.
