I hate the idea that people push that unattractive men (and women,I guess) are more likely to want a relationship and treat their partners better.

u/bkgn 6d ago
Someone thinking that no one wants to interact with them only because of some perceived flaw in their looks is usually a sign of a deeply flawed personality.

Yes and no. We have to remember that attraction is a spectrum. I've met loads of unconventionally attractive men and women who just don't carry themselves well due to past experiences. Some of the people who believe they are so unattractive aren't truly "ugly", they've just been treated as ugly their entire lives that they just slap that label on themselves.
I mean i'm a dude and I personally find loads of the "conventionally attractive" celebrities god awfully ugly(but I place personality over looks). Simply because of the things they say or do, meanwhile someone with the polar opposite mindset will believe they are an angel simply because they have a pretty face or nice body.
And of course there are the people who fit perfectly in your comments category. Like the guy we are talking about.

I'm asexual, which means I don't experience sexual attraction. Sometimes I feel like I'm studying aliens when I watch non-asexual people talk about what's attractive. Attractiveness as an ideal is pushed so much that what non-asexuals experience as attractive looks incredibly dull and generic if you don't experience attraction. Like I see someone say someone else is hot and it's always some guy who looks exactly the same as all the other attractive guys.
9
u/Gloomy660660 5d ago
I’m aroace and am super curious what other asexuals experience… Personally, there are a handful of people I think are super handsome, I call it aesthetic attraction haha So while there’s no sexual attraction, something about their appearance coupled with their mannerism makes me gravitate towards them

I feel you, I'm bisexual but place personality above looks. So to some of my more understanding friends I'll say I'm a pan-forward bisexual who prefers women. I still feel that attraction to physical characteristics, but once I experience someone's personality I will either like that person more or the physical side immediately drops because they suck as a human being.
Needless to say, I'm used to being let down lmfao.
25
u/Inevitable-Level-687 5d ago
I've felt an attraction like. Once in my life. It wasn't sexual attraction but there was a "hot damn" moment.
I heard him say the words "hey, what's that garbage you like to watch?" to his girlfriend and it died instantly.
That's the closest I ever came to sexual attraction and it disappeared the moment he was a dick to someone he loved lmao
I COMPLETELY forgot about that until I saw your comment!
12
u/RAMDOMDUDDS 5d ago
And its completely valid. I fell head over heels for a new girl in my school all the way back in middle school, then I actually talked to her and she was such a bitch(I don't call anyone that), but I mean straight up disregard for others personal opinions while expecting everyone to respect her own, joked about tearing another kids paper up.
The very next day she got suspending for both fighting in the locker room as well as knocking two kids lunch trays out of their hands.
Some people can be otherworldly attractive physically, while being the most vile in personality. But on the other side of the coin I've met someone whose both incredibly kind as well as beautiful. Unfortunately nothing came from that but hey, glad for the experience.

Yep, 1 of my biggest (teenage) heartbreaks was from a conventionally unattractive guy, but I really liked him cause I thought he was nice. Apparently after awhile I found out he was only with me cause all of his friends said he was ugly n he wouldn't ever b able to land a hot girl. I was just a game n proof to his friends that he could... Ssssooo fucking nice... 😂

I had a similar experience unfortunately, he treated me more like an objectified trophy than anything and he openly admitted to it multiple times. It took me a minute to find her. I actually think they’re in par attractiveness wise, which is about average. The difference is that she puts some effort into her appearance and he put 0 effort in.
The moral is that even if you’re at or below average looking, if you take care of yourself, you’ll be fine. Speaking from experience btw.

u/jakethepeg1989 6d ago
Yeah, I was thinking that in the wedding pic on this post.
Like, you might not be prime Brad Pitt. But tucking your shirt in and combing your hair will go a hell of a long way to make you look presentable.

u/hofmann419 6d ago
He didn't even tuck in his shirt and the tie was way too short. Plus, the suit definitely wasn't tailored. I can understand not having the money to get a fancy suit, but tucking in your shirt is the absolute bare minimum, especially for a wedding.
And judging from the other pictures, he definitely hasn't put in any work in his appearance at all. He could look significantly better with a nice outfit, better glasses and a good haircut.

Well, at least she needs to stay married to him for at least 7 years before getting the passport, and we don’t really have alimony in Sweden. Child support is only 150-200 EUR a month depending on the child’s age. I do hope she loves him!

If she married him pre-2022 and it was already 3 years by then, she probably already have the citizenship.

Those can sometimes go together. Chronic insecurity and lack of self confidence means thinking about how you dress is incredibly painfully uncomfortable. If you make an effort and look in the mirror and still hate what you see then why bother. It's hard to break that cycle

u/tracy_ogbert_jordan 6d ago
If you make an effort and look in the mirror and still hate what you see then why bother.
beyond that, if you don't make an effort, then people can't make fun of your failed attempt at looking decent.
self-esteem issues are a real motherfucker
71
u/Skellyinsideofme 6d ago
Yes, this is what happened to me when I injured myself and suddenly gained a lot of weight, after previously having a conventionally 'fit' body.
It didn't take long for me to stop doing a lot of my self care, and stop trying to wear nice clothes.
If I hadn't tried to look nice, then I couldn't have failed in looking nice.
It's a horrible place to be and it can be difficult to climb out of that hole.

36
u/Candle1ight 6d ago
Health and cleanliness makes you feel better regardless of your looks. Taking a shower and wearing clean clothes feels good, working out feels good, losing weight feels good, etc.
When it comes to fashion though? Trying on different clothes and realizing that I hate myself in all of them just makes me want to blow my brains out. My fashion will always be shit.

Find a brand/style of jeans you like. Buy them in 2-3 shades (I like light, medium, and black.) Then get half a dozen crisp, clean cotton t-shirts that fit in colors you prefer. Get 1 pair of sharp sneakers. You’ll be good.

I can back that. I got severely depressed and tried to cut everyone off and self imprison myself to my room. I stopped doing anything really. I'm back to it all but actively don't want a group of friends. Only trusted people that I call as such but everyone at a distance. I love my me time and need a ton of it. Family is plenty for me and I'm not married or have children. My parents need plenty babying and I can barely manage that. I don't give a fuck about fashion anymore. I used to be so stylish in my own unique sense that girls would play with my hair and hangout with me and rub my shoulders and stuff. Being part of my friends circle meant you had access to a lifestyle, my dress sense was a major part of that.
Now I couldn't give a flying fuck
70
u/VicisZan 6d ago
I had a similar but opposite problem. I was OBSESSED with being clean because I had such bad acne that it utterly destroyed my entire personality for almost 2 decades because I was taught that having oily skins means I should never ever touch moisturizer because it would be so much worse.
Turns out I have dry skin and it’s oily because it builds up on my skin. If I moisturize I get almost none.
Now I’m suddenly losing weight, enjoying being outside and I’ve almost completely stopped using tech because I was always outdoorsy as a kid and it turns out I still prefer it. I was just too ashamed to actually do it.
Edit: a typo

I think that's the consequence of feeling like your ugly and unworthy of love. You don't see the need to look any better (you'll still look ugly), and you lack the practice/experience with basic things like how to care for yourself (hair styles, products, proper clothing sizes, etc..)

Exactly. There are levels to attractiveness but this guy with average effort is average at MINIMUM But if you put in bottom 1% effort you'll get bottom 1% results.
Just be self aware. You aren't unlucky. You just don't try. Call it what is it.
If they happy though that's there business and not caring about your appearance shouldn't disqualify someone from being happy so I'm glad things are working out for him.

48
u/insanelysane1234 5d ago
I had a coworker tell me something like that as well. He said something to the extent of "you are really not my type at all, but everyday that I see you, you're getting more beautiful and now I think that you are stunning. How can that be?"
We were young and he apparently was learning the lesson of personality over looks right then and there 😂
15
u/Aelle29 5d ago
Same. Had a (female) friend who was just ugly as fuck. Crooked ugly nose, protruding mouth, unclear skin, fat in the wrong places, and not in a harmonious way at all.
But with time I started finding she had charm. By the way she talked, her personality, and familiarity. I didn't find her ugly anymore and I even found her beautiful sometimes.
Personality, facial expressions, posture, social ease, confidence and likeableness really all play a major role in how beautiful you'll be in the eyes of others.
(dont tell incels that though, they'll make death threats)
8
u/DangerousLoner 5d ago
I have a friend who is not good looking at all from some congenital abnormalities that have carried over into our adult lives. She’s painfully thin with features too large for her small frame but her laugh can light up a room and children/babies love her. She glows when she holds a baby and she’s just so full of beautiful cheerfulness. It’s magnetic
9
u/Yoshi9105 5d ago
I've experienced this. I've honestly started feeling romantic attraction to people who weren't my "type" at all (say I would have never swiped yes if it was just online dating), but once I knew their personality their looks not only didn't bother me, but they actually looked beautiful to me. it's wild how that works!
unfortunately in the online dating times, the first impression is always visual and that's how people decide someone is "ugly" in their eyes without getting the chance of seeing the beauty in them after getting to know them.

I swear I went to school with a guy who was this guys twin, and he had a girlfriend. It really isnt about looks, thats something incels choose to believe because its too hard to fix a bad personality. This guy found his love because of his openness and honesty

All I see is a normal looking dude who, for his fucking wedding, didn't tuck in his shirt or get a properly fitted suit, get a haircut, or practice his smile in a mirror for 5 minutes.

Proof that the real reason incels can't find a partner is because of their personality.

Og comment: u/GoddessKillion Unfortunately, he was dating a woman before he saw that comment, and his current wife was more attractive than her, so he dumped the ex for his new wife very quickly.

I don't know how this is gonna sound to most but he wasn't all that ugly, he wasn't a great beauty either but most things that people call ugly are average. Looks can get you to a certain point but your personality and actions have to carry the relationship forwards, I'm glad for the girl and hope he worked through the insecurities. I have seen far too many guys and gals who aren't the most beautiful people out there, again for the sake of argument I'd have to admit that I rarely find people to be ugly, and there will always be someone to find you attractive. The trick is to find someone who will also find you interesting and want to be with you, people have to work on themselves and not give up, props to the happy couple on the cute baby they have.

It's a pretty common thing. A lot of "ugly" guys, usually also just dress terribly. I don't understand why, since it would help them a lot.

My best mate is a conventionally stunning man, all I’ve heard from in the women in my life is their hearts fluttering for him.
I was stunned when he first introduced me to the girl he was seeing but i understand why she became his wife.
It does happen.
Sincerely a jaded dick.

I saw the best looking man I’ve ever seen in my life on a bus in London. Not to be mean, but his gf/ wife was not attractive at all. You could tell by their interactions how much love they had for each other though and it was really cute.

To be completely honest, I think truly attractive people who have people swooning over them left and right are probably more likely to end up with somebody who isn’t as conventionally attractive but is genuinely a decent person. As they would stand out, rather than the opposite.
Whereas, normal looking people generally see super attractive people as worth sacrificing some personality for. Or all in some cases…As I’m sure we’ve all seen at one time or another with some of our friends lol..
Sometimes though, it’s just straight confusing. I have a friend who is an extremely attractive woman, has a great career, tons of friends, a large community, all of that. Yet she decided to date a guy for a long time who was not only not at all conventionally attractive, but was a hugeeeee douchebag as well. Like two minutes within meeting him I was like ummm what’s up with this dude??? And almost nobody we knew wanted to be any where near him.. Yet, she moved out of state with him to live on his property and everything. It baffled me.
Only thing I can see he had going for him was he had some money? But like, she does too and gave up her career for him and everything? It was soooooo weird lol..→ More replies (13)26

My best friend from high school dated some really hot girls. Then one day after college we were roommates and he brought home a girl with progeria that looked a little like sloth from the Goonies. They got along great and dated for a while. What I learned from that is, a cool chick will always be a cool chick, but often a hot chick is just hot.

I generally agree with you, but whenever I see this story i always also think of the almost identical story of the (Russian?) girl who posted on social media about how she was ugly and had 0 self esteem and would date anyone with only requirement that he's male, and ended up with a husband and a glow up so i feel like this specific story has a female counterpart

u/hoptownky 6d ago edited 6d ago
He is actually an asshole. He got famous for the first girl. Then the girl in this picture who was way hotter found him and he dumped the first girl.
I mean, that’s how real life works, but no need to praise him for dumping the ugly girl once he got famous.

u/SunshineAlways 6d ago
Scrolling down in that post, someone said after he dumped the first girl, he said she looks like a horse. If you think you’re ugly, how do you treat someone else like that? :(
37
u/Asmodeus_Satanas 6d ago edited 6d ago
Because reality is often disappointing. Nobody is exactly who we think they are. Sometimes it’s bad, not always bad, but it’s still healthy to keep that mindset to a certain extent imo.

Is it really surprising though? If you're ugly, spend time whining about it online, and never have been in a relationship - odds are you're pretty lacking in maturity and interpersonal skills.
The very premise here of being "too ugly to love" should be a dead giveaway. Nobody is too ugly to love. But you can be too ugly to get a girlfriend in spite of an awful personality. Just because someone is ugly doesn't mean they're a nice person, just as little as being pretty means you're a asshole.

Uh. Is there any more to this?
His first girlfriend isn’t necessarily someone I’d call ugly by any means, she looks cute enough in that picture.
And after few months after they broke up he wound up dating then eventually marrying and having a child with this other person?
Is there proof he was cheating or he solely broke up with her because this other person who said he was cute was more conventionally attractive or something?
Also why am I seeing the phrase “looks match” on there so much? Gonna hazard a guess the subreddit named “Ugly” might not have a great community

Very few people are actually ugly, but chronic under grooming can do a decent impression.
Sounds cold, I know, but spread the word because it's one of the most insidious forms of classism, but also one that is relatively easy to combat if you know about it.

u/The_Dancing_Cow 6d ago
And grooming doesn't even need to be laborious or expensive!
Wash and moisturize face before bed, and put on sunscreen if leaving the house (at least your face).
Learn to trim your hair twice a year (or get somebody to do it for you), brush your teeth daily (best before bed so your mouth doesn't fester overnight).
Then just shower regularly (which includes shampoo, conditioner, and body wash/bar) and wear clean clothes (can be thrifted).
I think the thing that does the most heavy lifting outside of those things is your lifestyle. If you eat decently healthy foods, increase your activity, get enough sleep, and avoid abusing drugs you'll look more healthy which people generally equate with attractiveness.
