This just irks me and it’s so shallow. Why can’t people settle for some one who treats you with respect? Do they need to be a 10/10 model?

Because "hot people" trigger that part in the brain that rewards you for being with them. Keep in mind, a long, long time ago if you were (what is now considered) overweight, you were considered hot, because it meant you had money and could buy a bunch of food and stuff.

Society helps dictate what is considered hot at the time, and then society helps drive this point home, and has been doing so since before any of us could talk, which is how it gets etched in the brain.
