Personal Skills IWTL how to become more observant of my surroundings

I feel like I go through life on autopilot a lot. I walk down the street and barely notice the buildings or the people around me. I miss details that other people seem to pick up on naturally. It's like I'm constantly in my own head. I want to learn how to really see things around me how to be more present and aware. Are there any specific exercises or habits I can develop to improve my observational skills and just take in more of the world?

Academics IWTL math and science

I’ve (30F) always said I’m not good at math and science. Between having not great teachers at foundational stages of the subjects, poor work ethic, and thinking I just wasn’t good at it, I feel almost dumb when it comes to these subjects. I never had to work super hard in school to get good grades in school and would say I’m pretty smart overall, but really struggle with math and science. I remember when I took Zoology in college, I actually tried and studied, and for the life of me could not wrap my mind around the inner functions of a cell. Now that I’m older, stuff like that clicks a little better, but I’m also worried I’ll just never be able to get good at math and science.

What steps could I take to work towards improving my math (especially mental math) skills and science (especially biology) skills? Anyone else struggled in these areas and worked hard and is now proficient in them?

Personal Skills IWTL how to keep improving a skill when I can't practise every day

I'd like to learn how to structure practice when sessions are irregular and sometimes quite short.

What do you do at the end of a session so the next one is easier to start? I'm interested in a method for a practical skill, rather than advice to build a daily streak.

Academics iwtl mathematics, physics, programming, and AI, but AI itself is making me question the point of learning anything.

I genuinely want to learn mathematics, physics, programming, computer science, and AI. I want to build a career in computer science, pursue AI research, and hopefully do a PhD someday. But lately, I've been feeling increasingly demotivated.

The problem is that I rely on AI to learn almost everything. Whenever I have a question, I ask GPT. Whenever I don't understand a concept, I ask AI to explain it. And the more I learn this way, the more I wonder: What's the point of learning anything when AI will always know more than I ever could?

Even the most basic AI models seem to possess more knowledge than I could acquire in a lifetime. And with new models becoming increasingly capable, I keep wondering whether the knowledge I'm working so hard to gain will even matter in the future.

With GPT-6, Claude Opus 5.5, Gemini 4, and other models competing to become more capable, it feels like the gap between human intelligence and AI capabilities will only continue to grow.

I want to understand the mathematics behind AI, learn physics, become a better programmer, and contribute to actual research. But sometimes I question why I'm putting in the effort when AI can explain concepts faster, write code better, and potentially solve problems that I might spend years learning to solve myself.

And even when I genuinely want to learn, I'm confused about what I should prioritize learning and whether any of it will remain valuable by the time I become proficient.

I'm not necessarily saying that learning is useless. I genuinely love the idea of understanding how things work. But I'm struggling to reconcile that curiosity with the feeling that AI might eventually outperform me at almost everything I want to become good at.

For those of you studying computer science, mathematics, physics, or AI, how do you deal with this feeling? How do you stay motivated to learn when AI is advancing so rapidly? Do you think deep technical knowledge will still matter for people pursuing AI research and PhDs, or should we be approaching learning differently now?

Technology IWTL programming from scratch and want to learn how to solve problems rather than just follow tutorials

I've been interested in learning programming but I want to avoid becoming someone who can follow a tutorial without understanding how to build anything independently.

Academics IWTL I honestly feel dumb as heck at 27 with low vocab

Hi, so I just joined Reddit a week or 2 ago so i do not know how this works. I starting to read books again after 8 or 9 years. I stopped my education at mid A Levels for XYZ reason and i had not touched a book since and stopped writing. Always been using a laptop or a mobile phone.

I am starting to read books again and I sometimes feel so ashamed not knowing certain words and sometimes they can be simple as well. Like is this normal cus idk. I want to improve my vocab greatly. I work in sales and spoken English is very good which really helps with my work but i really want to make it 100x better

P.S: reading The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday(ironic isnt it lol)

Academics IWTL how to improve my English skills

IWTL how to improve my speaking and writing skills to be exact. I'vs just gotten my IELTS results with 7 on writing and 7.5 on speaking, but other than just stuck with improving by studying for the test, I want to just improve my overall abilities in those skills.

For writing, I've been writing my journal in English so far, I'm not sure if it helps. I'm also trying to improve my vocabs along the way.

For speaking, I've been using a website practicing execlusively for IELTS. They ask us IELTS speaking questions, we answer it and they grade us based on our performance. I think this might not be the best option in the long run because I think it is kind of restrictive, so sometimes I do shadowing (watching/listening to English videos and repeat what the speaker says to get their nuace and pronunciation).

At school, we are only taught about grammar, no writing essays or speaking, or even listening at all. 12 years learning English at school in my country just does not bring any result except for tests, so that's kinda out of question.

But overall, I feel like what I'm doing is not helping me with anything at all. Do you have any better recommendations?

Personal Skills IWTL how to be an independent an adult

I don't mean stuff like cooking, cleaning, doing laundry because I can handle all that. it's everything else that's the issue. I don't know how to take public transport, I don't know how to withdraw money from an ATM, I don't know how to talk or even mingle with people. My social skills are similarly underdeveloped. It would be less embarrassing if I was freshly a young adult but I'm 23 now and I still lack so much awareness. I was very sheltered by my upbringing and being the youngest child, I was also very coddled. there's a lot I didn't have to do because my older siblings always handled it. Now I'm in a situation where I need to step up for myself and I'm learning just how inadequate I am. How do I start adulting and become an independent, well adjusted person?

Misc IWTL how to fix my sleeping habits

Basically, I'm having trouble staying awake during the day and sleeping at night and it's been like this for years.

Here's my daily struggle: wake up for work after 10+ alarms, hoping one of em actually does the job (I've slept through all of them before). Get to work, eat breakfast, then work about 3 hours. Luckily my job has spots where I can take breaks or get stuff together to prepare for the next few hours of hard work.

If I'm busy that day, I prepare for avout 10-20 minutes before working another 2 hours. If not, I nap. Then I have lunch.

After lunch can also be a toss-up but if I'm busy, I work. If I got most my stuff done early, I could take an hour or two nap without anyone noticing and have done so in the past.

Then once I get home I almost always fall asleep. Sometimes it's an hour nap from 5-6 pm, sometimes I'll wake up at 10 pm confused about why none of my alarms woke me up (I've learned to set more alarms between 5:30-10 pm just in case I sleep too much).

If I slept too late, I rush to eat take a shower, then try to force myself to sleep. If not, I can actually do stuff and enjoy my time at home before I go to bed at 10 pm (I tried to make this my normal bedtime).

But there's an even bigger problem. It doesn't matter if I took a nap at 5-6 pm or 5-10 pm, it's always a coin flip whether I sleep til 7 am or wake up at 2 am and struggle to sleep again.

I've slept til 10, showered and ate, then slept soundly until 7 pm before. I've also woken up at 2 am a instead.

I've napped til 6, gone to bed normally at 10, then slept til 7 pm like I want. But I've also woken up at 2 am and struggled to get any sleep that night.

So to recap, some days I'll nap for 2-3 hours at work and others I might get 30 minutes. Some days I'll nap an hour at home and then get 9 more hours of sleep, other nights I only get 4 hours.

I've tried tracking these patterns but haven't found any rhyme or reason still. It's like my body just keeps flipping coins to determine if it's tired or not when I get any sort of free time (plenty of times I fall asleep involuntarily when I'm trying to work at my desk).

Anybody know what I could do to stop falling asleep so much?

Technology IWTL how to learn video editing from scratch and eventually make professional-looking videos

I want to learn video editing, but I'm not sure where to start. There are so many apps, tools and tutorials that it feels overwhelming.

I'd like to learn how to make smooth transitions, add music, improve colors and tell a story through editing.

For people who learned video editing on their own, what was your learning process like? What should a complete beginner focus on first and what mistakes should they avoid?

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who started with zero experience and improved over time.

Arts/Music/DIY IWTL to keep playing after a missed guitar chord

I've been learning guitar after work and I keep restarting the song I'm practising after a bad chord change. I know the opening much better than the final verse now. In my lesson, my teacher counted out loud and I managed to carry on after missing the change. At home, I stop strumming and lose track of the count.

After lessons, I record a voice note in Vomo AI, going over my teacher's practice instructions in my own words so I can read the transcript later. My teacher asked me to practise the change slowly, then play the song through without restarting. I can do the slow change on its own. During the full run, even with the metronome slowed down, I miss the chord and can't find my way back onto the beat. Should I practise keeping the strumming motion going on muted strings first? I need a way to practise recovering, because restarting has become my automatic response.

Sports IWTL how to fuel my self nutritionally to perform and workout

19 M, as of right now im currently getting back into the gym while picking up MMA, I’ve found a routine that works well for me. Full body workout 2X a week and MMA 2X a week, allowing me to get a fulls day of rest and hit both activities.

I’m also trying to put on size as I am somewhat on the skinner side, so im just eating more, more protein etc.

However I want to be able to fuel myself so I can recover and have energy for my activities. Such as info like light carbs such as candy or rice cakes before a workout, or maybe if im resting I should eat more protein so I feel full and don’t overeat. Just information like that and how I can utilize it in my diet so I can perform better.

Academics IWTL how to improve my writing, critical thinking and comprehension skills. I feel dumb

I have ADHD and I’m medicated for it but I really suck at writing essays and articulating myself. I feel like I can’t form sentences together and I see how well people speak and write but I just sound like a 12 year old. My comprehension skills also suck. I struggle to understand concepts especially when it comes to uni. I’m studying psychology and this makes it so difficult because I feel so dumb. As a kid I was never really taught and I wasn’t able to pay attention in school so as a 25 year old it impacts my work and school life a lot. Any tips?

Academics IWTL how can I learn English at C2 level above all writing. My grammar is awful still.

I've tried many times to improve it. However, It may be related to my eagerness to acquire rather than learn and study the language itself. I can't stand *studying* but I seriously need to make such substantial progress. I'd like to become a well-rounded individual like those who work for "Our World in Data", "The Economist", "Aeon Essays" and things like that. On the other hand, I'd like to develop other valuable skills but I don't know where to start. I'd like to operate at a macro level in this world... I'm about to get a degree and be a teacher.

Academics IWTL how to compare two explanations when both sound convincing

I'd like to get better at comparing explanations of the same topic without choosing whichever sounds more confident.

What is a concrete way to practise this? I'm interested in how you find the point where the explanations actually disagree, and what evidence would settle that point.
