Buying an intel MacBook Air in 2026.

• Upvotes

Hi, I know before anyone starts bashing me, I would like a laptop that can do MacOS, Linux and Windows without the overhead of a VM, I am looking at 2018 or 2019 MacBook Air, I do understand that x86_64 MacOS is dead but fory tasks (working with tools for jailbreaking older IDevices, web browsing, YouTube, Docs, and PowerPoint), I know I could get an older ThinkPad but I want so something thats plug and play that just works and I can dualboot or switch my OS at need, advice?

How do I stop my new MacBook charger cable from twisting and forming loops?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have a new Mac, and the braided charger cable keeps twisting and turning into weird loops like in the picture😭

I have tried straightening it out, but it keeps folding back on itself. I am worried the cable might start to break around the folded areas. Is this problematic in the long run? How do I stop the cable from tearing or breaking?

Would appreciate any tips! Thanks!

MacBook for software development

I am a software engineer and considering to buy a macbook. I don't have previous personal experience for proper specs comparison.

The question is would a macbook pro with:

M5 10core,

24GB ram

1TB

be enough or do I need to look at m5 pro with more cores and/or possibly 32 GB ram?

The max workload would be:

Docker 12-16 containers

K8s 20-30 pods

Thank you for your time in advance.

Ideas for skins on MBA Black? I don't like the colour.

Hi, I bought a black ex-display MBA M5 for a great bargain, but I'm not a fan of the colour. Any suggestions on getting around it, e.g skins, and if suggesting dbrand, what colours do you think go well?

bricked my MacBook Pro 2018

As the title suggests my old MacBook is now a brick, won’t turn on and it’s completely unresponsive. Well, this is shitty because I just decided I wanted to test out a 400$ animation program but now have to deal with finding a new laptop. Is there any recommendations for an older but still sorta current MacBook that can run a full animation software that relies on 2.5 D rigging?

Help with Macbook Neo or used Macbook Air M1.

so i'm planning on buying a new laptop that i can use everywhere.

  1. i'm an IT student
  2. I have a PC at home so i don't need a heavy machine, i mostly want it to be lag free and very smooth for the tools i use(most probably remoting my current pc, opening chrome tabs like a madman and opening apps irresponsibly without managing my open tabs)
  3. i mostly want my laptop to be future proof(still usable and smooth in the future) and overall very usable (doesn't mean i won't take the risk of having a better machine overall with a used m1)

for around
750$ for a brand new Neo with 8/512 Memory
700$ for a used Macbook Air (around 80-90% battery health) with 16/512 Memory

which would be the better purchase?

What's the best macbook for my buck?

I'm looking to upgrade my macbook as my current one (2015 pro, absolute unit) is finally giving out on me and I need to be able to use it away from a power point! I've been looking at the m5 16gb but thought I'd ask for any better/more cost-effective options. It needs to be able to handle editing + fx software, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This might easily be the biggest upgrade ever for me.

I just upgraded from my chromebook, which is the HP 11A G8 EE with 32GB storage 3GB ram to an M4 air with 16GB ram 512GB storage. I have had my chromebook for the last 4 years and the more I have used it this year, the more I have realized that I would defiently need to upgrade soon. I was able to get the M4 air for $830 before tax on Swappa, and it came with no MDM, and no icloud. Overall, I am really satisfied with my purchase and have a pretty good feeling this laptop will last me much longer than 4 years with apples software support.

Pro or Air?

Hello. I am deciding between the m5 models of the pro and air. I intend to use this mostly for work. I am a graphic designer and I create social media posts for a living. So I mainly use Adobe applications (mostly photoshop, indesign and illustrator) and Canva. Sometimes garageband depending on what I need from audio. Sometimes i need a lot out of a work computer, creating or editing high resolution graphics (billboards, 8 foot by 8 foot signs, etc.) so I need it to handle things like that. At first glance, that would make me want to get the pro but looking at the specs, they seem pretty similar in terms of hardware. Same ram, both can have 1 tb storage so it makes me lean towards the air. Most video i work on is under 10 minutes and around 720p to 1080p so I dont need anything crazy. Should I bite the bullet and get the pro or save money and get the air? Thank you.

macbook pro will not give me an accurate storage reading

Post image
2 Upvotes

For the past few months, my MacBook Pro (Apple M4 Pro, 2024) has been running super slow and struggling to load large files (I have tons of large-file-size photos/videos stored on my desktop), and has occasionally told me I don't have enough storage to import more photos from my camera. I've repeatedly checked my available storage, and it always tells me I have 100+ GB available, and I have the 2TB iCloud plan, which should be optimizing my storage and removing most of my large files from being completely stored on my hard drive. I finally bought a SanDisk SSD, and when I plugged it into my Mac, it tells me I've used 422GB of available storage on my Mac, while the settings app tells me I've only used 251GB. Anyone know why my settings app will not give me an accurate read on available storage? My OS is updated to Tahoe 26.5.2.

I do have my iCloud settings set to optimize storage for iMessages, documents, photos, etc. but it seems like it's not optimizing correctly.

My MacBook Pro is stupidly efficient when it comes to RAM

As I’m making this post, I currently have over 20 tabs open, Codex, Claude, Apple Music, GoodNotes, Cursor, Docker, Homelab setup, local LLM, and it’s only using up right now about 31GB of RAM. (Quad monitor setup).

It’s a 128GB MacBook M5 Pro, got it after winning a hackathon last year, and I dont see myself upgrading it in the next 10 years. Love this thing so much.

A1243 keyboard and Macbook Air M5

Good evening everyone!

After 10 years on PCs, I'm back on a Mac, with a MacBook Air M5. To be able to work comfortably from home, I tried connecting an A1243 keyboard (I prefer wired with USB ports, and I need a numeric keypad) and... nothing happens. Whether with a basic adapter or an Anker hub, it seems to be recognized only as a USB hub (when I plug a Bluetooth dongle into one of the keyboard's ports, the MacBook responds), but not as a keyboard.
It seems there's an issue with recognizing "low-speed" USB devices.

Has anyone managed to solve this problem?

(I tried with the keyboard's original USB extension cable, but still nothing...)

Thanks in advance!

Water Spill on Topcase?

I have my computer on a stand whenever I work, had a glass of water last night and I don't know what my hands did but water ended all over my books and a bit dropped onto the left part of my keyboard.

I took it to an official Apple service provider this morning and it seems like there's signs of liquid on the topcase, but none on the logic board, speaker or anywhere else. The guy says the keyboard can show damage in one week to six months if even, so I'm not sure what to do.

The fee to change and replace the Topcase is around 1115 USD which at that point...I don't know if I should just wait for it to die, use it with a bluetooth keyboard if needed, and get a new one when I get sick of it. That's the route I'm leaning towards the most at the moment but I'm so upset right now I'd like to know if this happened to anyone else.

Has this happened to anyone else? Or what would you do?

MacBook Air or Neo (Uni student)

Hello!

My HP windows laptop got stolen unfortunately and I am in need of a new laptop quick.

I am a broke university student who just recently got a job. If I do get a new laptop I’d need to pay it in installments, that shouldn’t be an issue for me though since I get a flowing 850 biweekly income.

I am debating if I should get a MacBook in general but more specifically, an air or neo.

I am a pre-med psychology student who typically has a lot of files.

Is a neo any good or should I just invest in the air?

Notes: I want it to be long battery life, smooth, and can run a lot of tabs at once.
Other questions:
Should I get the 1 TB or 512 GB of storage?

I don’t know much about Apple or computers so advice would be helpful

Is the 32 core max chip worth it over the 20 core pro chip for gaming?

Looking to upgrade my M2 air and am stuck between a pro 20c and a max 32c but can’t seem to find any direct info linked to gaming benchmarks between the 2. Would it be worth it to upgrade to the max chip while maintaining usage of the MacBook will be gaming? Thanks!

Title: MacBook Neo screen has yellow/green haze and possibly bent casing after a drop — will it get worse?

Thumbnail

Hi! I dropped my MacBook Neo a few weeks ago, but only noticed an issue a day or two ago. There’s a yellowish/greenish haze along the left edge of the display, most noticeable on dark backgrounds and at 100% brightness.
I also recently discovered that the display lid and body might be slightly misaligned. When closed, the gap along the left side gets progressively narrower toward the hinge, then opens up again at the very edge. The metal edge seems to go inward around the middle and protrude outward again near the hinge. The body also appears slightly bent, and the lid feels subtly misaligned when I run my fingers along the edges. I don’t feel any scraping or resistance when opening or closing it.
I initially thought it was just a screen issue because the physical damage isn’t noticeable during normal use. I only realized the body was bent and the lid was slightly misaligned when I took it to a technician. They explained that because the screen is so thin, damage from a drop might not become noticeable immediately and could appear days or even weeks later.
My theory is that the drop may have shifted the hinge or bent the casing, pushing the screen too close to the body. Could the edge have been pressing against the body when opening and closing, eventually bending it further and possibly causing the display issue?
I’ve dropped the laptop around three times in total. I also used a fairly thick plastic hard-shell case to prevent dents, but sometimes the display part of the case would pop off, and I’d snap it back into place. The technician suggested that forcing the case on might have contributed to the bending.
The screen is still usable, and I can use the laptop pretty much normally without noticing the defect most of the time. I’m mainly worried about whether the damage will remain stable or progressively get worse, even if I continue using it normally.
For anyone familiar with MacBook repairs:
Could the drop or hard-shell case have caused the bent casing and uneven gap?
Could the display edge be contacting the body even if there’s no noticeable resistance?
Could the yellow/green haze spread or become worse over time?
If the laptop is still functional, is it reasonable to keep using it as it is, or could that risk further damage?
Would you leave it without a case or use another type of protection?
I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who’s experienced something similar. Thank you!

brand new macbook - keeps heating up

i got a brand new m5 macbook air yesterday! 24gb ram, 1tb storage, and whilst setting it up, the base got very warm. not scalding hot but it heated up. i facetimed my friend hours later, it was warm again. and i’ve just had a teams meeting and it was warm once again. i really don’t know if this is normal or if it’s defective. i have relentlessly checked activity monitor and the cpu load is literally at the bottom. i have stickers on the lid of the machine but i really doubt that those are preventing the heat from spreading. i spent a lot of money on this and im really nervous that there’s issues with it already. i’d appreciate any help with this 🫩

2020 Mackbook Air (intel) for playing Starcraft 2? Or just get a newer one?

I don't do any heavy lifting, just play some old games, Starcraft, Magic Arena Online, browse internet, shop, youtube, etc. Will the 2020 intel do it for me or should I invest in a little newer device? There's a cheap one on Facebook marketplace right now so just wanted to know
