I just upgraded from my chromebook, which is the HP 11A G8 EE with 32GB storage 3GB ram to an M4 air with 16GB ram 512GB storage. I have had my chromebook for the last 4 years and the more I have used it this year, the more I have realized that I would defiently need to upgrade soon. I was able to get the M4 air for $830 before tax on Swappa, and it came with no MDM, and no icloud. Overall, I am really satisfied with my purchase and have a pretty good feeling this laptop will last me much longer than 4 years with apples software support.

I accidentally dropped my MacBook Pro. Luckily the drop wasn’t from high up I guess it was only a few centimeters from the ground. Other than some small dents on the edges, there doesn’t seem to be any other damage and it works fine right now.
I apologize if the pictures aren’t super clear.
Is there anything I should be worried about? Dents are bound to happen at some point right? And I guess this isn’t super major.

I’m absolutely no Mac/Tech expert so please bear with me!!
So I have a 2020 MacBook Air with an Intel i7 and I’ve had it since it was released so around 6.5 years.
I’ve recently started university after a gap year so I haven’t used it much the past year.
The laptop still works absolutely fine but there’s some things that bother me a lot. The battery usually dies within 3-3.5 hours of doing mostly light work (Anki, GoodNotes, Google, etc.) it also gets hot very quickly, gets slow/laggy and blows very loudly or crashes (but that happens rarely)
There’s some programs that don’t work anymore as it isn’t supported by newer MacOS but so far I’ve found ways around it.
I’m thinking about replacing it with the new M5 MacBook Air but honestly still want to stretch it a bit.
Do you guys have any tips to improve the lifespan or can you give me advice whether I should buy a new one?

I am a software engineer and considering to buy a macbook. I don't have previous personal experience for proper specs comparison.
The question is would a macbook pro with:
M5 10core,
24GB ram
1TB
be enough or do I need to look at m5 pro with more cores and/or possibly 32 GB ram?
The max workload would be:
Docker 12-16 containers
K8s 20-30 pods
Thank you for your time in advance.

I am going to attempt to replace my own MacBook screen (I’m aware of the risks).
I would love some advice, based on the picture attached, does this require a full display replacement?
I hear success stories from the Aliexpress replacement screens - would they be practical as a low cost option?
Any help much appreciated

I’m planning to buy MacBook Air M5 but not exactly sure which size to go for.
I prefer it to be more portable and easier to carry and to use outside of the house. Being able to put it on your lap in the car, on a train, wherever.
I need it for work, spreadsheets, outlook, shopify, claude, Canva, etc. and a little bit for my college.
I wouldn’t use it that much when at home. I have a pc with 3 monitors so I’m good.
On the other hand, having a bigger screen is nice. When splitting screen to have 2 different windows, it would be better to have them slightly larger, right?
I also feel like the bigger palm resting area is an advantage as well.
But I’m honestly thinking that the 15” would be a better choice if I didn’t have a pc at home and it would be my only device to work on.
The other difference besides size would be a storage size.
I’m going for the 10-Core GPU option either way but there would be a storage difference.
13” - 1TB storage
15” - 512GB storage
I’m not sure if I would be ever able to fully fill up 512GB but it’s always nice to not worry about freeing up space.
I would appreciate any input, thanks!

I am a frugal lass who buys used devices and relies on them until they are not-so-useable anymore. My current Macbook Air from early 2015n with 8GB RAM and 128 GB storage has officially moved from being "kind-of-annoying" to "quite frustrating", so finally I concede that it's time for an upgrade!
In trying to figure out the sweet spot for my limited budget and planning for as many years as possible before needing to upgrade again, I'm currently considering a Macbook Air M2 (2022 or 2023?) or Macbook Pro M1 (2021), both at least 16GB/512GB. So...
MY QUESTIONS!
- Would I get as many years out of either machine? The Air is a year (or 2?) newer - will that necessarily translate to another year of life? Is there any difference in terms of longevity between an Air vs Pro model, or is longevity just down to M1 vs M2 and age of the machine??
- Is there a difference between Macbook Air M2 models from 2022 and 2023?
- I saw that Apple might release the next Pro model this fall -- is that likely to have an impact on the price of used Macbooks on the market? (i.e. if I wait just a little longer is there a chance the price of a used Pro M2 or even Air M2 would come down at all?)
The extra power of a Pro isn't necessary, it honestly just comes down to price. This expense is already stressful for me, so if I were to spend an additional $100-$150 for a newer machine it reeeeeeally needs to be worth it.
I mostly use my computer for typical internet/browser stuff - email, browsing, Netflix, etc. - and tend to leave a lot of tabs open at once. Music, photos and videos for me are a mix of local storage, streaming, and cloud storage. No gaming, virtually no photo/video editing (though maybe I'd to a TINY bit of that if I had the ability to), very occasional audio editing. Phone is an Android. I don't want AI built into everything I do so will disable as many of those features as possible. While I don't beat up my laptop, I admittedly don't take the greatest care of it either.
Any input is much appreciated!

Hello,
I wanted to ask whether macbook neo is worth or not? I'm a university student and most of tasks will be like mostly doing uni work and playing fn. Should I consider buying it? For the same price I can buy a good Thinkpad

It was super hard to get this photo at all so sorry for the poor quality, but all over my screen there’s tiny horizontal lines. My kitten always walks on my keyboard and messes stuff up so i’m wondering if maybe she turned on something in settings idk?? Lmk if you have any clue what this might be. There’s no physical damage i can see on my macbook screen or the outside.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I have attached a video where a white bar appears on top of my screen for a few seconds, does this mean my display is getting malfunctioned, how to diagnose it ?

Hi everyone! I am just wondering wether or not I can downgrade my MacOS version using the App Store, because on the App Store it says 'Get MacOS Sequoia' and I would like to downgrade to Sequoia instead of macOS Golden Gate. I don't mind loosing some data, but is it possible with just a click of 'Get'?

As I’m making this post, I currently have over 20 tabs open, Codex, Claude, Apple Music, GoodNotes, Cursor, Docker, Homelab setup, local LLM, and it’s only using up right now about 31GB of RAM. (Quad monitor setup).
It’s a 128GB MacBook M5 Pro, got it after winning a hackathon last year, and I dont see myself upgrading it in the next 10 years. Love this thing so much.

I've been looking for deals to get onto apple silicon for a while as an upgrade from my laptop or second desktop for studying
I managed to get a what I think was a crazy deal on an m1 8gb 256gb 2020 macbook air for about £41.
The frame and screen were heavily bent and broken, the screen didn't display but I thought I'd give it a shot to see if I could get tit going as a project.
It arrived today packaged quite nicely, I plugged it in to power and an external monitor pressed the power button to see what would happen.
And it powered on.
I had to do some negotiating putting the laptop into and out of clamshell mode as the usb c mouse and keyboard didn't have permission to work yet but eventually got in saw there was no icloud but some local accounts on there. So after a while, I finally got them all off and put my icloud onto it.
So now I have a clamshell m1 macbook air desktop for £40. Im trying to decide whether it's worth trying to find a good deal on a frame and screen and make it a full blown laptop, the battery health is 89% to either keep or sell on or to just keep it as a desktop.
Open to ideas, thanks!
Ps. I also have a untested logic board that I bought for £10 that I was going to use as a donor board incase I needed any parts as its likely icloud locked so any ideas on how to test that board without buying loads of parts to see. Because I'd potentially use that to kaje some cool project putting it into the back of my old 2006 imac 22"

I am starting my university this month in computer science, will Apple MacBook Pro 14" M5 Pro 1TB 24GB 16C GPU 2026 be enough for the next 4-5 years? I know it is not something that you can't tell for sure, but at least if compared for something similar 5 years ago?

I was cleaning my MacBook Air M5 in Midnight when I noticed this crack. Should I be worried? I don't know what caused it because I’ve been taking care of my laptop and even clean it weekly. I also bought a quality sleeve to keep it protected. Everything is working fine so far with no issues, but I just want to know what this is and if the crack will spread over time.

I was about to buy a m5 mba 15’’ 24Gb 1Tb. Then I found an offer for a new m5 mbp 14’’ (same configuration, 24Gb/1Tb) for the SAME price.
My biggest concern is portability during work travels (especially in terms of size: 🚆 / ✈️/ small desks). I’ll use it a LOT on bed/couch too both for work and for movies. 1,51kg vs 1,55kg seems like a minimal difference nominally. But the mbp is smaller, so i’d like to get more feedbacks from actual users.
The display is another dilemma. Better quality in the pro, bigger than the 13’’ but here too the difference is not substantial vs the Air 15’’…
I would’ve 100% gone for the air at regular price, but now i’m confused 😵💫

Hi, I know before anyone starts bashing me, I would like a laptop that can do MacOS, Linux and Windows without the overhead of a VM, I am looking at 2018 or 2019 MacBook Air, I do understand that x86_64 MacOS is dead but fory tasks (working with tools for jailbreaking older IDevices, web browsing, YouTube, Docs, and PowerPoint), I know I could get an older ThinkPad but I want so something thats plug and play that just works and I can dualboot or switch my OS at need, advice?
r/macbook • u/LlaoLao • 18h ago
so i'm planning on buying a new laptop that i can use everywhere.
for around
750$ for a brand new Neo with 8/512 Memory
700$ for a used Macbook Air (around 80-90% battery health) with 16/512 Memory
which would be the better purchase?

Hi, I bought a black ex-display MBA M5 for a great bargain, but I'm not a fan of the colour. Any suggestions on getting around it, e.g skins, and if suggesting dbrand, what colours do you think go well?
