People pay to watch this stuff too. My wife was trying to cozy up to some artsy types and they dragged her to something like this where someone was portraying the irony of capitalism and its slavery with an actual iron and ironing board.
200 dollars a seat to watch some angry college grad iron clothes in varying states of frenzy and proficiency. Even asked for audience members clothing and ruined some. Folks werent even angry... when she told me all about this I lost a little more faith in humanity.
75
u/that_dutch_dude 13h ago
sounds like she got to experience the irony of capitalism.

These are the people that buy bananas taped to walls for obscene money.
9
u/plantborb 12h ago
No these are the people that make the banana taped to the wall. Rich people laundering their money and hiding assets buy it. This gives the banana taper more clout and (kinda hilariously) proves their point to less nuanced observers.

u/shagan90 12h ago
Growing up I did work on some rich folks 'farm' (pet project more like), and they would routinely go to this event where the grass is painted with a checker board pattern, each square numbered (A1, B6, etc.), and a cow let loose on this patch. They would literally bet money on which square the cow would shit in first, and they fucking loved it.
Rich people do weird shit with their money

If you already have a cow and a farm, that feels like some good cheap fun. Go all out and make it a big silly overhyped event. I'd attend that shit.

Small art shows like these usually have free booze and sometimes little sandwiches
When I was a college student many moons ago in san francisco i would check the listings for gallery openings. Got drunk for free so many times

Personally, I would go to performances and exhibition opening nights (usually stuff made by the local art school students) mostly because usually there was a cool thing or two to see, cool people to meet and free wine

Actually? Yeah.
Comes down to how you portray yourself just enough so that these weirdos take you seriously.
My cousin did an “art piece” where it was a basketball that was dipped in paint and thrown at the canvas randomly. It was a joke but when he submitted it people started surrounding it completely enthralled for some reason.

It’s been done very recently by someone pretty well known selling finger paintings for 1/2 mil each out of a rehab center.
4
u/woodenleghen 12h ago
I think yes, but you have to already live in and be a part of the class of people that can throw money away on this.
Hundreds of people busk or perform like this on the street. The reason they don’t get paid beaucoup bucks is because they don’t have a friend with an art gallery downtown that tells all their friends at the brunch at the Ritz that you’re “performing” at their gallery tonight.

You? No. Modern art isn't about skills or knowledge, it's about connections. A minority of people with the right connections gets the grants, pulls the crowds, is placed in newspapers, etc. The rest, some of which are incredibly talented, fights every day to break bread
My mom is an artist. Conflict of interest aside, she is one of the most talented painters I know. If it wasn't for my dad supporting her financially, she would not have been able to do what she does

I couldn’t agree more with your assessment. This art clearly demonstrates the capitalist deterioration emanating from oligarchic consolidation, systemic commodification, socioeconomic stratification, and financialized exploitation, precipitating institutional delegitimization and structural disequilibrium.

This is what I desperately want to believe. But I knew a girl, many years ago, who considered herself an artist. She essentially made underwear out of dead fish. She wore this at a small exhibit and said it was a statement on female empowerment. Totally serious too. When a review came out that called out this 'art,' she took so much LSD she checked herself into the local mental hospital.
