Discussion / Question If you hate “this game was overhated” retrospectives, stop encouraging hyperbole at launch

I see people complain about those rose-tinted retrospectives where a game that was unpopular at release suddenly gets called an “underrated gem” a few years later. But I think the gaming audience needs to acknowledge its own role in creating them.

If you don't want every divisive game getting a “we were too harsh on this” video five years later, maybe stop treating every disappointment like it's an irredeemable disaster when it comes out. And push back on exaggerated criticism even when you dislike the game yourself.

Because once the launch discourse gets ridiculous enough, the eventual counterargument becomes incredibly easy. Someone only has to show that the game has worthwhile qualities, or that some widely repeated criticism was inaccurate, and suddenly the retrospective looks more reasonable than the original reception. You don't even need rose-tinted glasses when the bar you're arguing against is “this game has absolutely nothing going for it”.

Wolverine feels like it's heading straight for this cycle. There's a difference between finding it disappointing or preferring other releases and acting like enjoying it calls someone's taste into question. That kind of reaction practically writes the future “Wolverine was actually good” yt video for them.

Then people will complain that everyone has conveniently forgotten its flaws. But acknowledging its strengths wouldn't feel like some dramatic reassessment if there had been room to discuss them properly in the first place.

Discussion / Question What is up with all the "I don't care about GTA 6" comments?

I am literally seeing more of these comments than people who are actually hyped for the game, and they always add that they are more excited for another game; is this a new type of marketing, or what? It is actually getting weird; when GTA 6 was announced, it was 99% hype, so why, all of a sudden, does no one on the internet care, and what point do they have to prove?

Discussion / Question This AI decompilation stuff is kinda wild...

Post image

I asked AI about the long term implications that will be seen by the gaming industry and this was the response. The Napster line really got me lol.

But more curious to hear from actual gamers? Are developers panicking? Surely corporate legal teams were caught completely off guard? It feels like this has developed over the course of like one week ??

I am curious about the long term implications to the gaming industry, would love to hear some insight.

Discussion / Question PSA: Amazon Luna exists, you probably have it (with Prime), and it has some surprisingly good games

I was hoping Star Wars Galactic Racer was on Game Pass and was surprised to find out it's on Luna. Also saw Hogwarts Legacy was on Luna which is perfect for Halloween vibes. I never use Luna but I always have Prime, so I definitely plan on checking this app more frequently to see what new games they add.

Discussion / Question Unpopular opinion: I don't care about game length

Do people seriously think grown ass adults have the time to sit around playing 80 hour video games? The most recent big games I can think of that received this criticism are Mafia: The Old Country and Wolverine. Less length actually means less burnout. I am currently replaying Final Fantasy VII Remake on hard mode and I cannot begin to describe how much of a slog some of these chapters and sidequests are.

Discussion / Question Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s combat should earn game of the year consideration.

Post image

Onimusha: Way of the Sword has been a blast to play so far. The combat is challenging but fair. The bosses are intimidating but within reach. The game introduces new mechanics as you progress, making the combat always feel fresh. The rush when hitting the Issin timing is unforgettable!

Discussion / Question I feel like games in general are getting kind of sad for me

i feel like theres nothing to play for me. I have a rather humble steam library of around 60 games and i recently i had an argument with one of my only friends who play with me. My other friend actually has a life and rarely hops on and he barely shares any games with me. I used to love playing roblox (im a kid, duh) but ever since the billions of controversies i not only feel guilty about playing it, but theres nothing fun. I feel like i dont have the "i cant wait to come home and play" mindset anymore since recently, i play games that i like however i feel like my fun is very short lived, i hop on a game, maybe get like 3 minutes of dopamine and then it feels pointless and i leave. I still spend hours on the computer but after ending the session i just feel empty, i feel like i just wasted my time instead of having fun and i dont feel any fulfiment from it, i sometimes just willingly get up from my computer and just listen to something in headphones and do some mischelaneous task because i feel more productive and interested in that atm. (please do not be mean or say that i just have the wrong mindset, this is just a question i wanted to ask so please dont get offended)

Discussion / Question Why am I so bad at soulslikes?

I've tried a lot of soulslikes. Basically any game where the primary advice is to "get good" is a game I cannot play.

I once spent a week trying to beat a tutorial boss. It was either Dark Souls 1 or 2. He finally glitched into a wall and got stuck and I killed him.

Then the game started and I died repeatedly to the first monster out there, I think it was some kind of skeleton.

If the game requires me to dodge, I can't play the game. I will miss every dodge. If the game requires me to block, I can't play the game. I will miss every block.

In Expedition 33, I missed every single button press reaction. Every single one. That game let me adjust the difficulty so I managed to finish it.

In Silksong, I got pretty far by sheer grit and determination. My college age son is a huge fan of Hollow Knight, Silksong, and metroidvanias. I played it so I could have something to talk to him about. Some of the bosses took me over 100 tries, some I lost track after 150. I managed to get to Act 3 before finally hitting a wall, I couldn't even get to a boss in Act 3, the regular mobs were too hard. The thing is, I don't honestly think I got any better. I try my hardest each time, and I think after over a hundred tries I just happen to win by sheer random chance. I never felt like I knew what I was doing, or was getting better. The boss fights were always frustrating, not a single one was ever fun.

If there is some kind of currency you lose when you die, even if you can get it back again by reaching your corpse, I just don't get to have that currency. In Silksong I never had shards for my tools. I had tools I didn't even know what they did because I never had the shards to practice with them. I never had the rosaries to unlock things, unless I went back to the starter zone and farmed specifically for that purpose. It might take an hour or so for each thing I wanted to unlock or buy.

I just tried Valor Mortis because it hit Game Pass. I'm assuming there are bosses in that game but I couldn't reach any. I died to the regular mobs and got too frustrated to continue. I was doing kind of all right against the first kind of mobs, where you could block their attacks by holding down block until they attacked, and then respond. I usually had to drink a healing potion after each fight but I got past them. But then I started hitting enemies who turned red and you had to dodge their attacks and... I just couldn't get past them. I couldn't time the dodges. They hit me with every single one of their attacks. I'd burn through all my potions, and then just die.

I understand these games are supposed to be hard. But I don't think they're supposed to be this hard. The problem is me, and all the "get goods" in the world aren't helping me get good.

Watching youtube videos is just frustrating. They say things like "this boss was pretty fun, it took me three tries to beat him. Here is my strategy..." and the strategy will be the most obvious thing in the world. Like "dodge his attacks and then use your tool when he's staggered" or something. And that's great. The strategy is the easy part. I know exactly how to beat the boss. That's not my problem. My problem is execution. I can never make the character on the screen match my vision for what is supposed to happen. The video says to jump over the monster, I try that and instead the monster hits me before I can jump. Or I jump into the monster. Or I land too far away to attack. Or I land in lava. Or the monster's projectile bounces off the wall and kills me. Over and over. Ten tries, fifty tries, a hundred tries, and I'm still making the exact same mistakes, still missing the exact same timings.

I'll watch people playing these games and it's just like magic. I have never had the experience they have. It feels like they're playing a different game. The dodges just work. The enemies deal no damage to them. They're hitting every attack. They're chatting about the strategy they're going to use for the upcoming boss, like they're not even doing anything interesting or special.

I hear people talking about how good some of these games are, like Elden Ring. I feel like I'm missing out on some really good gaming experiences. I just wish I could figure out how to play these sorts of games. At this point I am starting to think I have some kind of mental disability.

Discussion / Question What games can you describe as “a mediocre game with an earnest heart?”

Having played the first three out of the four here, with the last one owing to the fact that I don’t have the hardware to play it, I can say this is my answer.

Based on my experiences and what I researched about the last one, they can and do deliver on some pretty hype moments as well as more sincere ones when they need to. But between those moments are sometimes hours of fluff and tedium to get there.

Discussion / Question I might only be able to keep playing indie games.

Even when I start playing a big-budget game, the sheer volume of content and the length of the cutscenes quickly make me feel like it's too much of a hassle to keep playing.

I end up playing nothing but fast-paced indie games.

Discussion / Question I’m Neither Anti-GTA Anti-ROCKSTAR nor Super Excited. Some of Us are Just looking forward to a Gaming Milestone.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Am I looking forward to the game? Of course. Vice City is one of my all time favorite games and GTA 3 is one of the seminal gaming moments of all time.

Am I excited? No. Didn’t like GTA V and Rockstar going to the ultra realistic route and leaving the tongue in cheek and replicating past settings, is not something I’m a fan of.

Seems there are two extremes. Either people are super excited for the Second Coming or want to claim how much they hate the franchise and the games.

But there are some of us in the middle who want to play what will be a crazy game technically (despite most likely a lame story and lame characters) and have fun with another gaming milestone.

Do we need these two extremes?

News / Trailers / Articles Missouri gamers watch out

I seen this post from Missouri's attorney general. I have no clue what their endgame is. I agree children need to be safe but I feel this is more in the parents responsibility at some point also. Stop putting your children unwatched in front of a video game so you can do whatever. Also maybe setup and monitor the parental controls also.

Discussion / Question San Andreas is Still the most Immersive GTA game to date

Post image
0 Upvotes

Crazy how a game from the early 00s lets you do more with the main characters in story mode than the newer GTA titles. You could eat food, get fat or get skinny or brolic and learn how to fight in different fighting styles. Those basic functions add more immersion and fun to the experience especially the fighting mechanics as minor as they are and if GTA 6 wont allow me to make Lucile the female character brolic like CJ from san andreas just for laughs or go inside every building on the map then i dont see why GTA 6 price is even justified when its a step backwards in immersion and just prettier in graphics.

Discussion / Question Do you support key shops?

Key Shops offer a lot of games for a much lower price than, for example, Steam.
Are they legit in your opinion? Or why do you pay more with other sources?
Over years, i've buyed a lot of games in key shops and never had a problem with them at Steam, Epic or Ubi.

Discussion / Question What game did you expect to be scary, but just wasn’t?

So I do love me some horror, mostly action horror but I dabble in others now and then. I’ve played quite a lot.

There were times I played some of these where I’m really wanting that terror. I’m playing with headphones in a dark room, in that mindset, butt clenched and ready for the cold sweats to come and have instead found myself going “oh, that’s it?”

What was that game for you? I’ll give 2 examples with 1 that will get me in trouble lol.

  1. Dying light 2, god I wanted to love this. DL1 to me was terrifying, the night mechanic made

    my

  2. butt pucker so tight I’m still crapping slim Jim’s. But DL2 was missing kind of everything that it needed to be spooky

  3. Resident evil 7. Maybe I hyped myself too much, maybe my expectations were too high.. not only did I not enjoy this game very much, I found the family to be… cringey, not scary, borderline goofy.

What are yours? Also I am freshly basted if you want to roast me
