MOD POST Remembering and Honoring u/bluequail

It is with a heavy heart that I share some incredibly sad news with our community.

Our top mod [u/bluequail](u/bluequail) passed away on June 30th. I was informed on that day by her oldest son. He also announced it on her facebook page for those who knew her IRL.

bluequail was a vital part of this community, volunteering her time, energy, and passion to help make this space a welcoming and safe environment for everyone. She was an active mod in this same sub for over 16 years. It's incredibly rare to see that level of commitment and longevity these days. She was a great friend and I miss her.

She was a very kind woman who not only took care of her family, but was also very kind and generous to people in need everywhere. She donated a lot of money over the years to complete strangers on Reddit, in subs like [r/assistance](r/assistance) and [r/care](r/care). She helped people IRL too, and even welcomed some people into her own home. She also cared for animals on her farm.

My thoughts and prayers are with bluequail’s family, loved ones, and friends during this difficult time. Thank you all for being part of this community and for helping us honor her memory. Her presence will be deeply missed here.

I know she made many friends on Reddit under this username or her other account where she made most of her donations. I want to invite everyone to use the comment section below as a space to share your favorite memories, expressions of gratitude, or kind words in her honor.

Please keep all comments respectful and supportive.

Posting Guidelines

  • Posters and commenters must now have an account at least 15 days old with atleast 50 comment karma. These will be automatically removed if you do not meet the requirements.

  • Do not submit a post with a title in all caps, or a blank post with just a title. These will be removed automatically.

  • Please be specific with your headline rather than just saying you need advice, make it clear in your post about what you need help/advice about.

  • No polls or surveys.

Rules

Below are the rules of this sub. Disregarding any of these rules may result in a ban. Both posts and comments are subject to all rules.

  1. Nothing personal relationship, sex, or dating related or anything about stalking a person. Even commenting on these threads is a grounds for a ban.

— /r/needadvice is a subreddit for getting advice about things going on in our lives outside of our relationship with significant others, potential significant others, and significant others of days past. Your relationship, your parent's relationships, your friend's relationships... if you are dealing with any person's romantic relationship, it doesn't belong in here. (This is code for "no romance related stuff") No dating advice. No hookup advice. No sex related advice, including anything involving rape (even if it happened to you), molestation, or underage sexual activity.

  1. Nothing about personal messaging each other - Don't ask or tell posters or other commenters to PM, DM, or inbox you.

  2. No sharing/posting to drama subs - Anybody cross posting any threads to the drama causing subs (subreddit drama, any of the SRS, just anything to increase the drama in a thread) will be banned. That just won't be tolerated at any level. Don't tattle on the mods of other subs here either.

  3. No revenge submissions - No "How to get even" at all, not in submissions, not in comments.

  4. No threadjacking or comment qualifiers - Stay focused on OP's problem. If you disagree with someone else's advice, offer some advice of your own with a top level comment instead of debating. If you agree with someone's advice and have nothing to add, just upvote it.

  5. No misogyny, misandry, racism, religious intolerance, or similar - Respect one another, even those you disagree with. We're all equal here. It does not matter if you're male, female, null, both, or nongendered. It does not matter where your come from, or what color your skin is. When meeting someone from a different walk of life, treat that person as you would like them to treat you.

  6. No lying advice - Don't ask how to lie, don't advise on lying.

  7. No references to suicides - Anything related to suicidal ideations are not allowed. For the sake of yours or your family/friend's safety, anything mentioning suicide needs to go to /r/SuicideWatch

  8. No soliciting items or funds - Since we allow throwaways, don't solicit money in here. Please view any effort to solicit money in here as a scam. But any need for donations can go to /r/assistance or /r/care.

  9. No advertising - Do not link your subreddit (unless it is relevant to the subject matter of the post), your youtube page, your personal website, clickbait, or stuff for sale. Mods are the arbiters of what constitutes advertising.

  10. Kinda Safe for work - We know that lots of controversial and personal things get talked about here, and that's fine. Try to keep your titles safe for work by avoiding foul language and graphic descriptions.

  11. Nothing about missing persons - Don't ask about how to track someone down or find someone you used to know.

  12. No stand-alone jokes. A joke with legitimate advice is fine, but not by itself.

Ban Appeals

  • For ban appeals: Do not delete any of your comments and posts, especially if they were removed by the mods. Deleting submissions looks evasive, and it forces us to choose between your word and our memory. Only the mod that removed you can reinstate you.

  • Ask once.

  • Ask nicely.

Family Loss Dad passed 2 months ago and I feel like I haven't even had time to grieve because of all the stuff I'm dealing with

My dad passed about 2 months ago. I'm 46, live in NC and he lived in Pennsylvania. I'm his only son so I ended up being the executor.

I knew there'd be paperwork but holy crap I wasn't expecting this much. We hired a probate attorney thinking that would take some weight off my shoulders but apparently he mostly handles the court stuff. Everything else is on me.

Dad's house is sitting empty 600 miles away, insurance wants someone checking on it, grass needs cutting, utilities are still running and I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with his bank last week just to get nowhere.

I work full time and have one kid at home. Every lunch break I'm making calls, evenings I'm sorting paperwork and weekends aren't much better. My kid actually asked why I'm always busy lately and that one hurt.

The worst part is I haven't even properly grieved my dad. Found an old voicemail from him the other night and just broke down. Next morning I'm back arguing with some company about his accounts. I'm frustrated with everything and then feel guilty for being frustrated.

Is there someone you can hire to actually manage all this? Not just probate but banks, property, utilities, paperwork etc. I don't mind making decisions, I just can't keep chasing 10 different people every day.

Anyone been through something similar? What helped?

Other What do to with nightmare neighbours? Feel hopeless

Really weird making a post like this but I’ve never been so stumped.

It’s just me and my mum living in a small house, and 3 years ago a couple with 2 children moved in, who seemed sweet at first. However, the guy is a drug dealer and is a complete dickhead. He has zero regard for anything that isn’t his. He lets his kid kick balls into our struggling wooden fence, or even into our front garden, which has lead to several things in our garden, including a memorial for our dead dog, smashing. He doesn’t discipline his kids, with remarks such as, ‘Who gives a fuck’. It’s made my mum cry, as we can’t have anything nice in our garden anymore without worry of it breaking or being stole.

Furthermore, we have 4 cats, and they love sitting at the window. Because of this neighbour, we don’t feel safe letting the cats out, as him, and his ‘clients’ have made comments about kicking or even killing them.

What do I do? The police know who he is, he’s had police called him before and has even gone to prison, but he doesn’t change. And my mums scared of handing in our ring canera footage as it’d be pretty obvious that it was us to gave it to them, and who knows what he would do?

Their house is rented but the landlord renting to them knows what’s happening but he doesn’t care, as long as money is coming in.

Sorry if the grammar is bad or this and that, it’s a bit difficult writing this. We just feel so helpless. If it’s important, we live in England.

Education Admins and Professor coming to my house what do I do?

For More context please read my previous post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Advice/s/hK9ScZIU68

Hello! Couple days ago I made a post talking about how I submitted a request to leave/drop out of university for the sake of my mental sanity and limit. Today I messaged the admin asking if theres anything I need to fill or complete so that I can stop studying after midterms, and he hasn't replied on that, other than "me and Prof[abc] will come and visit your house to talk to you some other day.

I dont know what to do I sent a message replying saying

"It's okay, theres no need for that. I genuinely appreciate everything that you and Prof have done for me, and I'm really grateful for your willingness to help and support me. I just want you to know that this is a decision I'm making on my own, and it's not because of you or the bullies or whomever. I think I need to take a step back and focus on stabilising myself mentally and emotionally first before pursuing anything else. Right now, I feel that I need to prioritise my well being, understand my goals properly and protect my peace before I can properly focus on my education and other goals. I don't want you to feel that you or the university have failed me, because I genuinely appreciate the kindness and concern you and everyone else has shown me. I just need some time to work on myself and figure things out about my life at my own pace. Thank you so much for understanding, Sir. It really means a lot to me."

What do I do, the admin just left me on seen 😭

And yes they know where I live because they are family friends and they know that I live with my family qwq

Education How to stop hating myself when I know I shouldn’t?

In my last 2 years of high school, I was having a really hard time mentally and had to give up some responsibilities to stay afloat (gave up SAT studying, playing my sport competitively, and took 4 aps grades 11-12 instead of 5-6).

I ended up getting into a T20 school (with a 5k yearly cost, yay!), which is great, but I can’t help but think what would have happened had I put my head down and suffered just a bit more through those years. I don’t know if I would have made it out of that suffering, but if I did, could I have gone to a top 10? Top 5?

I know I actually really tried my best, I would say I even pushed beyond my limits for what my brain could handle at that time, but I just can’t help but feel angry.

Makes me hate every second at my current university.

Friendships I need some father advice trying to navigate new environment and people

Hey dad

I’ve been struggling with making friend’s on campus I’m new to a lot of this as I was homeschooled since the third grade and hadn’t gone public till college it self. To make it worse I’m a junior who transferred from a regular college out to a uc. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy I did this but everyone around me feels alien. Everyone’s formed a group and the other transfers on my floor seem to have gotten clickly and I’ve yet to find a friend let alone a group. I’ve tried going to clubs but still get the same experience there. I don’t expect to have friends right off the bat or to be in a group instantly but it feels like every time I try to start a convo or introduce my self I seem to be brushed off.

End of the day I know it isn’t world ending and I don’t need to force it to happen but due to some insecurity’s of mine from being adopted and past friendships turning out toxic I’m starting to wonder if the problem is me…. I could really use some advice

Mental Health Is what I feel considered empathy?

\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\*By definition Empathy\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\* is the ability to understand, share, and connect with another person's thoughts, feelings, or emotional experiences. It is often described as putting yourself in someone else's shoes.

But is it empathy if I say something unconsciously that would be considered rude but I don’t feel bad about it until someone “calls me out” and tell me what I say is rude, I have a hard time distinguishing what is rude and and what is normal (to me it sounds normal until someone says it’s not). Is it empathy if I only feel back after when someone calls it out? If someone didn’t say something I wouldn’t know it was offensive nor would I feel anything. When someone brings it up later I tend to think about it a lot and replay the situation in Mr head over and over again, I feel bad but not because I know what I did (as I said if no one called me out I wouldn’t be aware I did anything wrong) I feel bad because of the way I may be perceived or because I think that what they say did is beneath me. I feel bad because they seem to be highly offended and I tend to accepted blame regardless of if I care or not. I’m in a situation like this now. I was just wondering if feeling “guilty” after the situation is the same as being empathetic because from where I’m standing my empathy seems to be delayed. Why don’t I know how my words will land before I say them? Why can’t I tell the difference between when I say something rude and normal? Any advice would be appreciated and I’d love to know your opinion.

Recently I’ve been in the process of rehoming one of my cats. I have 3 cats and my newest one turned out to be aggressive towards other cats. I know that it’s for the best rehoming her but I still feel really guilty. Is it normal too feel really guilty? I feel like I failed her and it’s really affecting me. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this?

Moving 26, disabled and unsure what to do within rough living situation

Hello, trying to figure out stuff as I have an internal disability called Sickle Cell, and my mother and I have had our life uprooted since I was 10 years old. She's been unable to work ever since I was a kid and diagnosed as I was her first priority and I feel as if we've been suffering for all this time because of me and what I was born with, as we've only been surviving off of SSI and not much else. We had so many years of moving from house to house and for the first time, I feel like a roommate has endangered me and my mother. They physically pushed me and threw things at me and my mother, and we already had police involved, we have had them detained and we don't know what to do as it's been rough. Mentally my mind feels like it's been an absolute wreck, I have cried and felt like I'm utterly useless and don't know what to do. I can do things like digital art and such but I don't know if it will be enough to make more money to move, as it's just a hobby. I barely can get from place to place as there's no form of public transportation and the heat here makes it hard for my body to stay out for long periods of time. I genuinely feel scared about what to do, and I want to help my mother in any way I can to make things easier. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Life Decisions Is this helpful or harmful treatment from family? Tw:passing away

I’ve been sick for a long time and it’s been getting worse lately.

I battle with grieving the life I wanted to live and adjusting to my reality of being disabled and unable to work enough to meet my own financial needs.

Disability is not enough to live on and I am currently in the shelter system and really struggling with quality of life here.

I told my friend I was feeling interested in finding out more about MAID as I don’t see my life getting better with systemic limitations and my own personal limitations.

“I’ve seen you work before and maintain a beautiful life. I know working sucks and having a schedule to adhere to sucks but that’s being an adult.

Time will not stop ticking, before you know it you will be there already a year without any improvement and god knows what other horrific experiences richer.. you have to do something about it, you are the only one that can change the paths of your life. Not the government, not your family/friends.. but you.

And you saying this makes me angry. You have been through so much. And this is how you want to leave the world? Living in a shelter where you don’t belong? I’m sorry but you are way too good for that and you’re choosing this life”.

What am I to do when I can’t? They think it’s a personal failing?

Before any more judgment…I’m sober…educated and all that. I did all the “things” and I’m still sick

Education Need advice on how to patch up my old internship

Okay, so this summer I did a great one-month lab internship! I kept the lab notebook and all that stuff (which I submitted late, but only because the university's email system is absolute garbage). They were super nice and wanted me to write an internship report—even though it was voluntary and I had zero obligations from my uni—just to make sure I’d keep everything in mind.

The lab liked me so much that they wanted to take me back for my M1 (Master 1) internship (the director herself told me this; I had just finished my L3/Bachelor's at the time, back in June). She told me to think about it and get back to her.

For context, at the same time, I was having the worst summer of my life. My grandparents were on their deathbeds, and I had to take care of them every single evening after my internship, and then they moved in with my family, etc... (they are mostly fine now after 3 weeks of intensive feeding, AC etc... but we really thought they had weeks left, heatwaves are so fun I swear)

With all that stuff going on, I never actually wrote the report. And when the director emailed me back saying that in the end it wasn't possible to take me specifically (the master's degreee program I'm in is part of the same university as the lab, there is a big research campus so they put out enough subject for all first year students, but assigns internship topics randomly...) I kind of lost it and just never replied.

Anyway, it's now mid-October, and the month of practical work (TPs) we were supposed to do in Master's is totally ruined because of the student protests going on in my country. My parents are telling me to call the lab back to ask for an internship for next summer to try and compensate, but now I'm too anxious/scared to do it.

Should I tell my parents why I won't email them back ? Should I just do the thing and send it ? I wanted to pop by and test the waters (they told me I was welcome to back in june), but the campus is closed.

Interpersonal Worried that I give off bad vibes

Hi!

So I’m a 24M and I guess the title speaks for itself…

I have noticed that in my day to day interactions with strangers, especially people my own age have a tendency to be quite negative. Obviously not all the time, but it’s especially noticeable on nights out and stuff like that.

A few examples come to mind.

Last weekend, I went for a few drinks with some friends of mine from my theatre group and was grabbing a bite in a kebab shop on the way home. This group of lads that were also in the shop initiated a conversation with me and my friend. It was super clear from the get-go that they were trying to take the piss out of us with their tone and what they were saying. I didn’t really play into it, cus I knew what they were doing and I was giving them some really basic responses - hoping they would get bored. But just came away from it feeling so odd.

Another time I was out during the summer, at a bar/nightclub with a few friends from my hiking group and the bouncer really singled me out towards the end of the night. I was standing near the back exit gate that was outdoors by the smoking area. Every time the bouncer opened the back gate for people to exit, he’d open the gate much wider than necessary and clip the back of my ankle with the metal edge. First time, I figured that it was an accident. Second time, I looked at him and said “watch out”. Third time that he did it, I confronted him - asking him what the fuck he was doing. Was met with the response that he’d “bust my teeth in if I spoke to him again”. Decided to leave that area cus getting kicked out was not worth it as it’d ruin the night for my friends who I was with. Ended up contacting the bar the next morning about it and letting them know what went down.

These are just a few examples off the top of my head. I don’t know, I guess these seem like small things but it just comes across so odd. And as the saying goes, if you meet 3 assholes before noon, you’re probably an asshole! So I’m worried that something about my demeanour puts people off.

I have a good group of friends and I think I’m pretty friendly as far as everything goes. I have lots of hobbies and I always try to engage in conversations fully. Don’t use my phone too much in public or anything… I have good hygiene and don’t look stereotypically rough. I sometimes think it’s an appearance thing because I wear glasses, have auburn-red hair and am admittedly a little overweight since I started my desk job last year (used to work in hospitality, which helped burn off calories every day lol), but I started going back to the gym last month. I’ve got a bit of a nerdy look to me I guess but my fashion is decent-standard and I don’t really wear T-shirts with movies or video game / geek culture stuff on it.

I guess I’m just looking for some stuff to maybe keep an eye on, that haven’t occurred to me could make me seem like an easy target or come across as an asshole or something hahah

Education Changing my Major-- I have no idea where I want my life to go

I have been committed to becoming a nurse for several years. Unfortunately, I missed ONE APPLICATION DEADLINE, and now I am reevaluating my whole future.

(Please keep in mind, I am AuADHD)

I have realized several things:

I like the prospect of working in healthcare, but direct patient care is not right for me. I worked briefly as an EMT; People are so unpredictable, and what you learn in textbooks and labs rarely applies to real life (I'd be surprised if a book taught you how to handle an aggressive patient, no clothes, and a pelvic gunshot wound running around the ER).

I think I was drawn to the clearly established career path that nursing offered. The education to become an RN isn't ambiguous to me, and there is a (basically) guaranteed job after graduation. I latched on to the first degree that felt safe and acceptable to my family, then didn't stop to consider other options even when it felt wrong.

I used to think I knew what I wanted to do 10 years from now, but now I'm not even sure what I want to do in two months!

I'm tempted to drop out of college and find a tolerable job, but I know I would be miserable. I love academia and can stoke passion for any challenging subject I must study.

I feel like I was born to be a scholar, but forced to pick a vocation...My strengths lie in biology--specifically physiology and microbiology-- but I am also interested in sociolinguistics.

I have no idea where to go from here or who to talk to.

Other I think I stumbled across cp on the internet

Hi, I think the title already says it all, I was browsing to watch some nsfw videos online but I think I stumbled across a site that shows very underage girls and kids.

I didn’t watch the videos but the thumbnails alone are enough to know how young these girls were.

I need help if you know where I can flag this stuff, my local police won’t do shit with it, are there like online forums and groups where I can put this?

Hope someone can help

Life Decisions Am i doing the right thing????

I'm currently in an LSAT prep course (which I've already paid for) because I want to go to law school and it's been two days. For context, I have a really bad anxiety disorder and I was unsure if I should even entertain the idea but I felt pretty good about my decision to start this. However, I've been experiencing intense nausea and stomach issues which is not common for me, and I'm thinking that this is a really bad indicator of what is to come. My mom says I should give it more time. What do you all think?

Interpersonal Mother self invited herself to doctor appointment

To preface, I (34F) have not been good for a while and it's getting worse. My hunch is a metabolic/hormonal issue so I booked myself an endocrinologist appointment, without informing my GP (who I no longer trust for reasons I'll explain if you need) and nobody else beside my boss, for logistics reasons.

I'm collecting my previous medical findings and asked my mother for some as 1- they are not on my health portal

2- I can't find them in the place she usually stores the files.

The appointment came up and now my mother wants to come too.

I do NOT want her there. She has an habit of claiming to be supportive and dismissing anything wrong with me in the same breath, the last thing I need is her minimising/rationalize them in front of the specialist.

I'm still in the age bracked where you struggle convincing doctors that something is going on without it being labeled "stress". That's one of the reasons I no longer trust my GP.

I told her I'd rather go alone but didn't elaborate further, because she'd get even more mad if I tell her is because I don't trust her to stay silent.

She wants to come because she's still hung up when I didn't tell her I was diagnosed with depression a decade ago (take a guess why I didn't say anything?) and because she wasn't there when my gyno found a uterine thing (it was nothing to worry about).

Now she's not looking for the files and won't elaborate about grandmas tyroid issues. She didn't say outloud that's because of the appointment but it's obvious it is.

I dropped an email to the hospital asking for the records but I'm not optimistic.

I could ask granny directly but I'd rather not as I don't want her to worry, she's 90+ but very sharp and she'd freak out.

I'm ok with meeting halfway, she can drive but she waits outside. That's apparently unacceptable.

Help me figure out a way to tell her she's welcome to come but she'll have to stay outside without it sounding as if I don't trust her.

Life Decisions I feel like my father stole from my family, how do I confront him about it?

When my father met my mother he worked as a bartender and blew through my mother's savings. He started higher education two times, both of which my mother financed and my father has never finished. When me(19M) and my brother (18M) were born my father invested my mom's savings into a scam without my mother knowing and lost it all. When they tried to go after the person he threatened my family by hurting me and my brother (we were toddlers at the time). So we got stuck at my grandmother's moldy flat. Around 5 years later a richer relative of ours gave us money for a flat because she couldn't bear seeing me and my brother cough in our moldy rooms. My mom wanted the flat to be on my and my brother's names but my father outright refused and put it on his name as the relative was his mom's cousin. Fast forward 6 years my parents got divorced because they constantly fought and my father started kicking my mother out whenever he felt like it. My mom took me and my father took my brother so no one paid child support and we didn't decide about visitations in court so we were always free to go wherever we liked. Since then my mom has never had a home. She got married a few years later and my father got engaged this summer. I live with my grandmother, my mother lives with her husband and my brother lives in a dorm as he studies half across the country. My father is looking to sell the place because he is moving across the city to be with his fiance. I already feel like I don't have a home because of my father and I wouldn't like him to sell the current place (which is a few minutes walk from my grandmother's place), as I feel like it would negatively impact our already distant relationship and possibly jeopardize my future as my grandmother is quite old and if anything happens to her I will have nowhere to go because her 3 daughters will be inheriting her flat. I am also really angry with my father for all the harm he's done to my family, especially my mother both emotionally and financially.

Do I even bring this up with him? If so how could I talk to him without completely ruining our relationship? What could I possibly achieve with him even if I am careful about my approach?

Life Decisions I feel homesick and uninspired where I currently live, even though it’s the only place I thrive. What should I do?

I’ve lived in New York for a year and a half now and although I love it, I can’t help but feel that living here is just a distraction from living the life I’m supposed to be living. I thrive here spiritually, mentally, physically, but my soul is tied to the place where I grew up. The landscape is beautiful; I understand and I am endeared to the people there more. I look at photos of that place and I yearn to go back there, but I sort of know I can’t anymore. There’s nothing there for me anymore, and if there is something there for me, it’s only bad stuff in the state I left there in (running away in part, no genuine connection to the type of people I envision myself spending time with, a terrible reputation in my community). I’m an artist and I don’t feel inspired by New York the way a lot of people do, too. I make art from the perspective of where I came from and I gradually feel that POV waning the longer I live in New York. I have this imagination that I can just return home and everything will work out, but every time I visit I just get the same feeling of helplessness again. I feel at the mercy of people back home in a way I don’t feel in New York, but in New York I hardly feel anything at all. Everything in NY is almost curated in a way to dull your senses, your instincts, and, at worst, even your humanity. It’s a matter of choosing who and what I want to become at this point. I want to love it so badly, but it just doesn’t love me back, and I simply don’t know how to make a decision anymore.

Life Decisions Am I missing out on the college experience?

I transferred to the university of ga from my state school in metro Atlanta and now I’m deciding to go back. I came because this was my dream school and I finally had the opportunity to go.
Bring a transfer already was hard but my experience being here for even a semester has had horrible effects on my grades and overall wellbeing. At first it was the usual homesickness because it’s my first time ever away from my family, back at home I commuted to school 15 mins away. But it slowly has started feeling like everything about being here makes me feel awful.
I tell everyone I came here for the amazing accounting recruitment and overall national recognition, but honestly, I came here because people told me to. I came because saying I went here sounded better than my state school. And I found out the hard way that I shouldn’t do something if my hearts not in it.
I didn’t mind living at home, I found it convenient and cheap. Everything was perfect, my grades, my social life, my effort.
I knew that I wanted to be a party person so bad. I thought being at home was keeping me trapped from all the things I “wanted” to do, but I come here with all the freedom and am still the homebody I always was.
At home I felt fulfillment, with my family, my grades, my friends, the small casual things I’d do.
Athens is fun in the college town sense but compared to the metro area, there isn’t much that I find interesting. My gpa is going down and I’m having an identity crisis because of it. I feel like I put myself in an unnecessary situation and now I’m paying the price of it.
Some people tell me I’m losing out on an incredibly important time in my adult life, that I’m going to be dependent forever if I go home, and that I’ll never get the same recruitment or prestige elsewhere.
Honestly my day to day life back home had nothing to do with my parents, I felt I was extremely productive just knowing I had a ground to stand on; I felt like there was a life outside of school.
Others tell me to go where I’m happy because that’s where I’m thrive and take up the opportunities. Going home would make me happy but I just wonder if I’m supposed to be sacrificing some happiness for my potential future.
I didn’t even get into the business college here this semester due to a high application pool and competition, so next semester I’d be taking all electives until I can reapply. If I go back, I could be taking all my major classes and not essentially be wasting a semester.

Am I weak for giving up this opportunity?
Am I setting myself back for wanting to go home and live the college life that fit my happiness?
Is there a problem with me seeking the comfort and peace I could have back home?
Should I be striving for more?
Am I lame for liking being a commuter student?

Mental Health I’m Concerned About My Mom’s Mental Health

I (22F) am worried about my mom’s (55F) mental health and I’m not sure what to do. I probably noticed things getting bad about 2 years ago, but I had been away at college and didn’t see how truly bad it was until I moved home. I graduated in June, but moved home at the end of August because that’s when my lease was up. My brother (19M) has been living with her the whole time this has been going on. He says he’s felt alone for a long time. Before I go any further, I should probably mention that my parents have been divorced since 2010. Even before that, my mom did all the heavy lifting. My dad was not a good husband or father, and I understand that doing everything by yourself for so long can catch up to you.

About 2 years ago, I noticed the house wasn’t as clean as she usually had it when I was growing up. She never let the house stay messy for long, and even looking back at old photos where you could see our clean house in the background feels like a lifetime ago. I’m not going to pretend that I haven’t also contributed to this mess. In fact, all of the stuff I brought home from college has been sitting in the garage since I came home and it’s caused arguments between the three of us. I’m working on it. I’m decluttering my room and I have a storage unit but for now it’s kind of just all over the place.

My brother said at some point she also stopped cooking and just started door dashing for every meal. Since I’ve been home, she’s only cooked twice and both times were within the last couple weeks. I appreciate that she’s trying, but it’s still concerning. I’m not the greatest cook myself, but in college I cooked for myself a lot. Since she started door dashing, she stopped going to the grocery store. In fact, she recently left the house to run errands for the first time in a while the other day and I’m proud of her.

Earlier this year, she quit her job out of nowhere. I knew she hadn’t been happy there for like two years prior to leaving, but I never would have expected her to quit without having another job lined up first. She was a marketing director making a little under $250K annually, but she said it was mentally draining and just couldn’t take it anymore. At this time, I was still in school and the only reason I found out is because I tried to use her FSA card at the pharmacy and it declined. I called her to ask about it, and she admitted she quit about 2 weeks prior.

She asked me not to tell people, so I kept it pretty quiet. The only person I told was my best friend, and he thinks she was fired. I asked her, and she says she wasn’t, and that many people assumed she did. My brother said before she left, she would oversleep a lot and he’d have to wake her up in the morning sometimes. However, she was there for 11 years and could pretty much do whatever she wanted. She was the second employee hired when they were a start up, and even though getting fired isn’t totally impossible, it seems unlikely. She was a really valuable asset to the company, and she’s never been fired before.

They threw her a goodbye party, which they don’t do when they fire you. I interned at this company for 2 years when she worked there, and I saw the difference between people who quit and people who got fired. The reason my friend thinks she was fired is because she negotiated 6 months salary to live on. Idk the exact amount, but half of whatever she was making, plus her unused PTO and however much taken out for taxes. My guess is probably $30-40K but I’m not sure. My friend insists that this can only happen when you’re fired, but she was there so long that I could see this happening without that being the case.

She’s been living pretty comfortably, but at some point the money will run out and I want her to find a job soon. She can’t afford to retire, and even if she could, she’s not old enough. If for no other reason, I would like for her to get out of the house and do something. As a recent college graduate, I am also job hunting but it hasn’t been easy. My grandma (her mother) passed away about a month ago, and that has been understandably hard on her. I know that leading up to her death, it was difficult for my mom to watch her wither away and watch the dementia slowly start to take over. I don’t blame her for being upset about that, but things have been going down hill since before that.

She says she was waiting for her mother to pass away before looking for another job, and now that she has, she’s ready. This still worries me because of how bad the job market is. Even with her experience and impressive resume, the jobs she has found so far (and hasn’t even applied for) are way less than what she was making. She says that she can probably negotiate, but I’m not sure. Never in my life has my mom not had a job, and I still can’t believe it.

Another thing that worries me is that she spends a lot of time on the internet, social media, and having long, extensive conversations with her Google AI chatbot. I could be wrong, but I feel that she’s starting to slip into AI psychosis. She has also spent a lot of time going down random rabbit holes and looking into conspiracy theories on the internet. One particular thing she has spent a lot of time on is trying to solve the Nancy Guthrie case. She wrote this whole thing detailing her theories, and says that she discusses it on some true crime platform with other like minded people. I know this isn’t particularly harmful or bad. I know that everyone has hobbies and interests, but she bed rots all day and spends time on this instead of looking for a job.

About two years ago when I first started to notice something off with her, she began hanging out with a new group of friends. One of them she knew from networking events, and slowly over time began getting to know the others. I’ve met most of them and they’re nice, but some of the things they’ve gotten her into concern me. For example, she started vaping after she met them which she never did before.

She was never really a smoker, but apparently she started smoking cigarettes when hanging out with them and one of her friends got her a vape so she would stop. To be honest, I’d rather her smoke a cig with friends occasionally than vape all day long. She told me when I was younger that cigs always made her sick anytime she tried them, so it was never something she did on a regular basis. Just the occasional drunk cig.

In the middle of me writing this, my mom smoked the last cig from a pack I didn’t know she had. I knew that she bought a pack that’s hard to get in CA where we’re from. Apparently you can only buy them on sovereign land (in this case, a casino down the street from our house). She mentioned that she bought a pack recently for a friend of her’s, but I didn’t know she had her own. I was not expecting that.

My brother kind of already vaped, but started doing it more when she started doing it. For the last 2 years, she has been buying 2 vapes at a time, and sharing them with him. This started when he was 17. I just think it’s insane, but maybe I’m overthinking it. I refuse to get addicted to nicotine, so I don’t vape.

She recently went on a trip to Vegas with this group of friends, and she said they did shrooms. She also admitted to doing Molly somewhat recently as well. I knew she did this stuff in her 20s, but I didn’t know she was doing it at the age of 55. I know she’s an adult and not doing hard drugs, but combined with everything else, I find it concerning.

The friend she bought the cigarettes for is a nurse, and convinced my mom of some things that are kind of insane. For example, she told her that birth control gives off a negative pheromone to men, and causes women to attract bad male partners. Because of this, she tried to get me to remove my Nexplanon, but I refused. I did some research, and humans are unable to detect pheromones; only animals are. I’ve met this friend, and she is nice. I don’t mean to question what she knows given that she did go to school to become a nurse, but some of the things she says don’t sit right with me. She’s conservative too, which kind of concerns me as well.

The most concerning thing as of recently (like within the last few days) is how obsessed she has become with cybersecurity. It started when she began obsessively analyzing every single device that shown up in our Xfinity app. Our WiFi has been kind of slow, and she attributes it to devices that have previously connected but weren’t in our house at the moment. Examples include my brother’s girlfriend, friends, etc. My friend who works in IT explained that Xfinity is notorious for having devices that have connected previously show up in the app, but they’re not the reason our WiFi is slow.

She also keeps getting alerts from Xfinity that my phone has been visiting sketchy websites. I don’t recognize any of the domains, so they’re probably just apps and things running in the background. My friend explained that Xfinity is doing what it’s supposed to do, but it’s really nothing to worry about which is also what I figured. I will say that she did get a verification code that wasn’t requested by any of us, which is why she thinks our network is being hacked. It is strange, but I don’t want to jump to conclusions. She has changed the network name and password numerous times over the past year. At one point, she was convinced our neighbors were trying to hack into our network, but I don’t think that’s true.

Because my mom doesn’t have a job, she doesn’t have health insurance. My college health insurance ended when I graduated, and I got on to Medical. She tried to get on it, but because of her last paycheck, she said it would be really expensive since it goes off of income. I’ve been asking her to get therapy since before she quit her job and lost her insurance, but she wouldn’t. She finds it embarrassing and says that talking about her issues makes her feel worse. I did therapy for a while, and I felt like it helped me.

Even before she quit her job, I was concerned about other things. For example, one of our showers broke (the one that my brother and I share) over a year ago and she hasn’t gotten it fixed. We have home owner’s insurance, but she’s too embarrassed to have anyone come look at it because of how the house looks. She also doesn’t want our insurance to raise our rates or drop us. Since then, we’ve all been using her shower.

At one point, she was driving around without car insurance for over a year. Because my brother was on her insurance, he was too. Her insurance dropped her because she got too many speeding tickets, cellphone tickets, and had a few accidents on her record. She’s not the best driver tbh. She finally got some, but it took forever.

I’m no stranger to mental health struggles. I’ve been depressed since I was 15, and still struggle to this day. However, I went to therapy and I’m on medication. This might sound crazy, but I feel like the two of us are feeding off of each other’s depression. I have been more depressed since I got home and have seen how things are around here. I think things will be better for us once we both get jobs, but it hasn’t been easy.

Anyway, I’m sorry that this is long and all over the place. My mom won’t help herself, and I know I can’t force her to. I know I am an adult and am responsible for myself, however I don’t know what to do. I don’t think anyone in our family really sees what’s going on because they’re not close by. I don’t want to blame her group of friends, but that’s when I started noticing things taking a turn for the worst. I never imagined my mother would be unemployed, vaping, and bed rotting all day. Is there anything I can do?

Medical Visible dust on pupil but can’t get it out!!!

Have had something in my eye for the passed few hours and me and my wife have been trying to get it out. Looks like a piece of dirt or sand. It’s directly on my pupil but no matter how much I touch it it doesn’t move but there’s very obviously something there that wasn’t there before.
Any advice? Have tried pulling eyelid out, rubbing the shit out of it, water rinse, q tip. About to try to sleep and see if it’s there in the morning
