Mod Post Read before commenting: Off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed and subject you to a permanent ban

Greetings from the mods!

We've had a flood of off-topic comments recently. We're posting this to remind everyone that off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed. An off-topic comment may subject you to a permanent ban.

The Rule:

Commenting Rule 1: Comments should contain a legal answer or a strongly related non-legal answer. If it is not legal advice, do not post. Period. You will be banned.

What is "off-topic?"

Any response that doesn't answer the question by reference to legal information or principles. A joke, a wisecrack, a comment about OP's formatting (use the report button instead) are all off-topic. Off-topic also includes expressions of sympathy, opinions on the law, and comments that berate the OP or anyone else.

Incidentally, simply adding "get a lawyer" to an off-topic comment does not make it on-topic. And "get a lawyer" on its own, without further information or help, is considered unhelpful and may be removed on that basis.

If you want to discuss a post, then wait until it hits /r/bestoflegaladvice or ask a question about the subject of the post in /r/legaladviceofftopic. The main subreddit and a comment thread are never a place to have a philosophical discussion about the law or the post. It is a place to answer the questions asked.

What is an "anecdote?"

For our purposes, anecdotes are stories about something that happened to you (or someone you know or heard about) who may have had something that might be similar that happen to them.

These comments are not helpful. They do not include current legal information that is relevant to the OP, and therefore, they are off-topic. If you know the answer to the question (based on current law and relevant jurisdiction) then just answer the question without the story.

Another type of anecdote is "I don't know the law in the jurisdiction you actually asked about, but in some other state, the law is..." That is just not helpful. Laws are different in different places. These types of answers are off-topic.

Referring an OP to a thread on a different subreddit, or to somewhere else on the Internet because it might include a similar situation, is anecdotal advice and not allowed.

These are not the only types of anecdotes, but they are probably the most common ones. Again, if you are not referencing legal information or principles, your comment is probably not allowed.

Violations subject the user to an immediate and permanent ban

Not that we need to justify enforcing our rules, but this is a busy subreddit and the mods have a lot to do. If a user shows up here, doesn't read the rules, and posts a single off-topic comment, the user may be immediately and permanently banned.

This policy is not intended to be punitive, although we know it may seem to be. There are a lot of you and not many of us, and banning users that do not follow the rules, even once, is in the best interests of the subreddit. Violating the rules almost always means the user didn't bother to read them, and we simply don't have time to deal with such users.

Tl;dr: Unless you have a legal answer, do not reply to any post in this subreddit. You may be permanently banned, even for a first offense.

Subreddit Rules

We've learned that some people just flat out can't see our subreddit rules, so I'm posting them here in a pinned post so we can link them when necessary and so they're super easy to find.

Rules for r/legaladvice Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1. All responses must offer an answer to the legal question posed by the OP. We enforce this with bans.

Anecdotes are not permitted. Neither is advice that encourages someone to break the law. Nor is "get a lawyer" a sufficient response.

There's a pinned post at the top of the subreddit specifically addressing this rule. We will absolutely ban you for commenting without answering the legal question

2. Personally Identifying Information

Posts or submissions that ask for or contain information that could be used to identify either party are subject to immediate removal.

3. Advertising or Recommending a Lawyer or Business

We do not allow referrals to particular lawyers, law firms, or other businesses.

4. Do not request or send a PM

All discussions must stay on the subreddit for everyone's protection.

5. Include your location

You must include your location in the following format: location: yourlocationhere . It must be that exact format, and it must be in the body of your post.

6. Read our full list of rules

Read our full list of rules here: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/wiki/index#wiki_general_rules

7. This subreddit is for simple legal questions.

This subreddit is for simple legal questions. We can't help with preparing a defense, legal research, etc. We cannot review contracts, plan your defense, or give you specific advice on exactly how to present your case with the court. You need a local attorney for that. Additionally, we do not accept medical malpractice questions.

8. NO LLMS

No LLMs. No ChatGPT. Don't recommend it, don't use it to answer questions, and don't use it to compose your modmail when you get banned for using it. Using it to compose questions is generally ok.

We will permanently and irrevocably ban you for this.

9. Mods can remove things we deem inappropriate or disruptive

Any post and any comment can be removed by the mods at any time if the mods decide the post/comment is or has the potential to be disruptive or is otherwise inappropriate.

10. Posts must be about a real scenario that you or someone you know is facing.

To expand on this, we additionally do not allow anyone but the immediately involved parties to ask custody related questions. Not friends, not significant others, not grandparents. Reddit is free.

11. Post must contain a legal question

A legal question is one that can be answered with the law, be it a law or ordinance, or caselaw.

12. US and Canada only

Laws are different everywhere. We can only help with legal problems in the US or Canada because we have no regular, reliable commenters from other countries. For other countries, please search for an appropriate subreddit.

Real Estate law Buying a home and seller's partner is refusing to leave

Location: Virginia

My partner and I are first time home buyers, and were over the moon to find a good sized home that was in our price range. We met with the seller (S) who lived in the house with their partner (P) and their three kids. Our initial meeting went well, with S telling us they were planning to move to a bigger home so they would have more room for their kids.

In April, we signed a sales contract and paid the deposit with the closing date set for October 21st. Part of what was discussed and included in the contract was that S and their family were to have a week after closing to fully move out. The lease on our current place is set to expire in November, and we thought having a few weeks to take our time moving in would save us a lot of stress, but it looks like we aren't so lucky.

Unfortunately, in the intervening months S and P have decided to split up, and we were informed this morning that P has stated they won't leave the house until after they've completed divorce proceedings. The problem is the hearing they have scheduled won't be until after the new year...

S has told us that the deed is in their name alone. While we're sympathetic to their issues, both my partner and I come from divorced households and so we don't have any expectation that this will be the only delay.

My question is what are our legal options here? I don't know how long they've been married, but I don't believe P can stop the sale. If we continue on with our original agreement of closing on the 21st, would P have to vacate? Would we have to go through the eviction process? Would either of them be on the hook for costs we incur for the delayed move?

Real Estate law Location: Montana. Bought a house, previous occupant left belongings behind, now threatening to sue me and everyone involved in the cleanout.

Location: Montana. I purchased a house in Montana and closed on August 10, 2026. The purchase agreement included an amendment stating that any personal property remaining at the house after noon on closing day would become my property.

The seller and his girlfriend (who now claims she was a tenant) were off the property by noon. However, the seller's realtor and a cleanout crew were still removing belongings when I arrived around 1 p.m. They finished shortly afterward.

The following day, August 11, the seller's realtor returned with a horse trailer and a cleanout crew to retrieve belongings that the seller and his girlfriend had requested.

The realtor and crew selected the items and asked my permission before taking them. As far as I can remember, I approved every request. They loaded as much as they could fit into the trailer. I don't know whether those belongings ultimately made it back to the previous occupants.

The house still had a substantial amount of property left behind. A second cleanout company was hired, and I personally instructed them to clean everything out. I also may have discarded some remaining items myself. At the time, I believed the purchase agreement gave me ownership of anything left behind.

Fast-forward a couple of weeks, and the seller's girlfriend started threatening legal action against both realtors and the second cleanout company.

On August 26, she contacted the second cleanout company, claimed she had been a tenant, demanded their insurance information, and threatened a lawsuit for approximately $16,000 in lost belongings. The company did not respond.

On September 25, she sent me a demand letter claiming at least $20,000 in missing property, including dentures, coins, agates, and other personal belongings.

On October 14, she left me a voicemail saying she intended to file a lawsuit that day.

She has never contacted me directly to arrange retrieval of specific belongings before sending the demand letter. She has also never shown up at my house or personally threatened my family.

Both realtors have discussed the situation with their brokers, and neither brokerage believes the transaction or cleanout was handled improperly.

I understand that a purchase agreement between a buyer and seller might not necessarily transfer ownership of belongings belonging to a third party, even if those belongings were left in the house.

My questions are:

  1. Does the amendment stating that remaining personal property became mine provide any legal protection if the girlfriend was not a party to the purchase agreement?

  2. If she was legally considered a tenant, would that change how her belongings should have been handled?

  3. Could I be personally liable for directing the second company to remove everything, even though I believed the purchase agreement authorized it?

  4. Does allowing the realtor to retrieve everything they requested after closing help my defense?

  5. Should I notify my homeowners insurance company about the threatened lawsuit?

  6. Would this primarily be a dispute involving the seller, the realtors, the cleanout company, or could all of us potentially be liable?

I'm currently trying to find a Montana civil litigation attorney. One local firm I contacted isn't accepting new cases.

I'm not looking to avoid responsibility if something was genuinely handled incorrectly. I'm trying to understand my potential exposure as the buyer who relied on the signed purchase agreement.

Any insight from Montana attorneys or people familiar with similar real estate disputes would be appreciated.

Other Civil Matters A lawyer in another state sent me a cease and desist EMAIL while claiming to be a licensed attorney in my state, but they have long since been inactive. Would this merit disciplinary action from the state bar if I send a complaint? (California)

Location: California

email they sent was

> DESIST NOW. I am (PERSON’S) attorney and I am licensed in California. You are liable for damages for slander and you are committing criminal slander amounting to third degree assault. It wouldn't take much for me to notify your local police. So CUT IT OIT!

I don’t even know what they’re referring to. Desist what? I don’t even live in the state of their client and have never met them? But anyway—

That was the actual email. It was sent to me from their gmail address that had their name. I looked up their name via the California bar license status site and it showed they were inactive in California and living in another state.

**so the Question is**

Are you allowed to claim to be licensed in a state (California) if you are currently inactive? He was, apparently, active for a period of time and had graduated from a California law school, but isn’t living or active in California. I know anybody can send an email telling someone to ‘stop’ (which I did long ago), but is that alright to do as a lawyer?

Employment Law Location: Montana. Can an employer threaten to sue me for something I did after I got fired?

Location: Montana.
I got fired a month ago because my coworker called in sick and she didn’t tell upper management - and somehow that was my job to notify them. I got fired two weeks after she called in sick.

I wrote a review saying I didn’t like their products and that a shelf the manager installed wrong fell on my head on google (opinion based and I actually didn’t like their products so I was being honest. And the shelf DID fall on my head). AND - when I worked there I would post photos of the sandwiches I was eating behind the counter (chill retail job, I was allowed to eat at the counter).

I got a cease and desist from their HR department today saying that I had to take down my review and delete every photo I’ve posted online from when I worked there because their employee handbook forbids it. They’re saying the photos are ‘taken from restricted sections from the shop that regular customers don’t have access to’. Except they do. Repair people, the managers boyfriend, Postal people, and others are allowed in every space I took sandwich photos. And if I don’t they said they would have to report me to Instagram and ‘potentially take further action’.

They’re citing the employee handbook which I never signed and they never sent me. I have proof that I asked for the employee handbook multiple times over email while I was still employed and it was never provided.

Do they have any grounds to pursue legal action?
Do they have any legal to stand on with these claims?

Edit: they’re claiming in their letter that I also wrote a review about how the manager was ‘under the influence’ on the job. I never wrote that review. They’re also saying I posted ‘unconsensual photos of employees on the job’. I also never did that. I only ever posted the sandwich photos.

Personal Injury Neighbors dog attacked my mom and she sued. The case has been closed, she did not get any compensation and the dogs are back.

location: Texas The title says it all. Around July, my mom was going on a walk and she got attacked and bit by the neighbors dog. The dog was not leashed and was unsupervised. She had to go to the hospital to get stitches and later on, shots. She did everything by the book: called animal control, the police to do a report and she got a lawyer. During the lawsuit, the lawyer kept commenting how due to the neighbor not being owner of the house, they can’t really get money out of the insurance but kept trying anyway. The case was closed and my mom didn’t even get a cent to cover the hospital bills. And as of yesterday, the dog is back with the neighbor. From what I know, the neighbors mom owns the house (?) and the lawyer said that they have no money to give. This isn’t the first time this has happened with her dog and this neighbor has an extensive history with the law. That’s the part I don’t understand, the dog has attacked multiple people multiple times before. My mom is planning to get another lawyer to get a second opinion but is there something else we can do or somewhere else we can go that we haven’t tried? Thank you for the help in advance !

Other Civil Matters university where i study/work posted an upskirt photo of me.

I’m a grad student/employee at a large public university. A couple of days ago a photo was posted of me sitting down while wearing a skirt, and the angle allowed one to see directly through to my underwear, which was a color that wasn’t black, so it didn’t just look like a shadow. You can literally see the waistband of my underwear and a small amount of my stomach.

I saw the post within minutes but it took an hour and a half to get taken down. Nobody cares. My friends/colleagues thought it was hilarious. They seemed to think it wasn’t such a big deal that an upskirt photo was posted of me to an official university page that all of my friends, colleagues, professors, and current and future students follow.

What can I even do?

Location: Virginia.

Employment Law Employer says all employees must sign an updated Statement of Faith because of Title VII, Section 702. Is that actually required by law?

I work for a Christian nonprofit that provides social services. The organization recently announced that all employees will have to sign an updated Statement of Faith by June 2027. The statement includes specific beliefs about same-sex marriage and abortion.

When explaining the change, the organization said it was a legal requirement related to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, specifically Section 702.

My understanding is that Section 702 allows religious organizations to make certain employment decisions based on religion. I always thought this was mainly intended to protect churches and other religious institutions when hiring pastors, rabbis, and other religious leaders, but I've since learned that it can also apply to employees in nonreligious roles.

I'm trying to understand a few things:

Does Section 702 actually require religious organizations to have all employees sign a Statement of Faith, or does it simply allow them to make employment decisions based on religion?

Can a religious nonprofit require employees in roles unrelated to ministry, such as analysts or administrative staff, to personally affirm specific religious beliefs as a condition of employment?

Is there a legal difference between following an organization's policies and being required to personally agree with its religious beliefs?

If an employee can't honestly sign the statement because it conflicts with their personal beliefs, what are their legal options?

Are there any North Carolina laws or court decisions that might be relevant?

I'm not looking to debate anyone's religious beliefs. I just want to understand whether the organization is legally required to do this or whether it's a policy the organization has chosen to implement under the religious exemption.

I'd appreciate any insight, especially from employment attorneys or people familiar with this area of law.

My mom's bank lost the beneficiary paperwork we did in early July & says we have no recourse other than go through the normal estate process

Location: Pennsylvania, USA

I'm completely new here, grieving, & afraid I may inadvertently violate the rules so please bear with me.

We buried our mom today, now I'm turning my focus to what is a major, potentially life savings costing, problem. My mom's cancer returned within the last year; her diagnosis was terminal & she chose too live out the rest of her days instead of attempting treatment again. God rest her soul.

I have multiple siblings, more than 1 have been severely permanently disabled since birth & will continue to live with me the rest of our lives. Another sibling is in a rough spot in life & lives with us aswell.

Our mom made me sole beneficiary for these reasons & entrusted me to make sure the sum amount passed from her to me would be split appropriately. A significant portion of her now estate was in actuality my disabled siblings life savings, simply in her name for what I hope are obvious reasons. Her wishes were that I put the savings aside specifically for the siblings it belongs to then split the rest evenly amongst all of us. All siblings were in agreement with her wishes.

Our mom herself has been severely permanently disabled for decades (familial genetic disorders that get worse each generation suck.) Our goal was to, upon her death, be able to preserve their savings whilst allowing them to continue receiving Social Security. For most people their savings are not alot, but its a hell of alot better than nothing & would atleast somewhat protect them if I was to unexpectedly pass myself.

Due to her disability then illness our mom was unable to set up anything more sophisticated; I'm still young myself & knew we should have but ultimately, with the money being solely in her name since my dad's sudden passing relatively recently aswell, I had no legal right to make any decisions regarding her finances & she refused/was unable to do so herself despite my pleas. Foolish I know & agree, but I can't change the past & I'm desperate to atleast protect their savings; I couldn't care less about whatever my personal share of our potential inheritance would be (again, really not a life changing amount for most people in the grand scheme of things.)

So to be as clear as possible, my mom made me sole beneficiary in hopes of avoiding the normal estate process & therefore protecting my disabled siblings life savings from being taken by and or completely losing the Social Security they rely on. Her bank now says they not only cannot find the forms we signed designating me as such, but they have no record of us even visiting their branch on that day whatsoever, whilst having record of other forms & day we visited. According to them, even if I can produce our copies of the beneficiary forms, it wouldn't make a difference & we have no other option than to let the standard estate process play out. They have no interest in helping us otherwise & will not even entertain the idea that their employee who I identified maybe made any errors doing her job. She conveniently is on some sort of personal leave for an unspecified amount of time for the forseeable future so she cannot answer for herself anytime soon, not that they would even approach the subject with her if she wasn't. Their words. We trusted them & her; once again, foolish I know, but here we are.

Do I have any legal recourse? If so, what type of lawyer should I seek out to help us? I haven't finished looking but at the moment I don't know where our copies of the paperwork are but I'm certain I have it somewhere. Again, according to the bank, they will not honor anything regardless of what I present them with due to allegedly them having no internal records of it or even our visit to complete said paperwork. Thank you in advance & God Bless

Edit: Forgot to mention a major motivating fear for our family here; due to her disability & illness then hospice since the terminal returning cancer diagnosis aswell as multiple hospital stays in the last decade totalling atleast 12 weeks cumulatively, she may owe a significant amount of medical debt. Im not aware of exacrly how much at the moment, but it very well could be more than what her total estate is. What I do know is altogether with other kinds of debt the total is already ~$9k but that is more than likely just the tip of the iceberg. She had medical insurance through Social Security but that only goes so far here in America.

Traffic and Parking Coworker threatening to involve my family and insurance after I paid our signed $700 settlement in full. What should I do?

Location: Michigan

A few months ago, I accidentally scratched my coworker’s parked car. I took responsibility, and we agreed to settle privately for $700.

We both signed an agreement stating that $700 was the total amount owed and that neither party could pursue further claims once the full amount was paid.

I paid the entire $700, and she acknowledged receiving it.
Recently, I told her how much paying that amount had affected me financially. I made it VERY clear that I wasn’t asking for any money back or trying to change our agreement. I just wanted to express how I felt.

She absolutely lost it. Started screaming at me at work, in front of other people, told me I should have “paid her and shut up,” and said she didn’t care about our contract.

She then threatened to go through insurance AND contact family members I had explicitly told her I didn’t want involved.

I’m an adult, and she knew from the beginning that I wanted to handle this privately. Given the circumstances, I believe she was deliberately trying to intimidate and embarrass me. She also sent me footage of me scratching her car with no additional context or captions….

For context, the vehicle I was driving was insured under a family member’s policy, and I was an authorized driver.
I have the signed agreement, proof that I paid, and messages related to the incident.

My questions are:
What should I do if she actually files an insurance claim?
Is our signed agreement enforceable in Michigan, even though it wasn’t notarized?

Could the insurance policyholder face financial consequences despite the settlement?

Does threatening to involve my family to intimidate me have any legal significance?

Would I have grounds to take legal action if she pursues additional compensation despite the agreement?

Should I consult an attorney now or wait until she actually does something?

I’m not trying to get out of paying for the damage. I already paid everything we agreed upon.
I just want to know what I can realistically do to protect myself, because I thought this matter was over.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Brother left dad semi conscious, confused & covered in urine for 8+ hours(BC 🇨🇦)

Location: British Columbia 🇨🇦

My dad has been in/out the hospital recently due to cellulitis/AFIB & now diagnosed heart failure. My brother (27M) is a drug user, and lives with my dad. I have been driving my dad to appointments, getting groceries etc but felt ok with my dad at home with my brother there to keep me updated if anything happened.

I hadn’t heard from my dad in a day and a half. I called my brother, who told me my dad had fallen off the bed, was acting confused & peed himself - and that he had been laying on the floor acting like he had a concussion. This all supposedly happened around 3/4 AM, and I didn’t hear about it until 12pm. I told him to call 911, but he refused as my dad was refusing one. I phoned 911 and rushed over to his house.

My dad is clearly confused, thought the paramedics were on the table, thinks he is in the airport instead of the hospital & unable to move. He was so clearly having a medical emergency.
All my brother did was pour water on him to ‘make sure he was awake’

My dad is in critical condition right now. Are there any legal grounds for neglect or something in a situation like this?

[NY/NJ] Financed a $60K Mercedes for someone else's business. 3+ years later, the car is sitting in his shop, the loan is charged off, and I'm stuck. Need advice.

Location: New York. I'm looking for some advice on a situation that I've let go on for way too long. I'll be the first to admit I screwed up, but I'm finally getting my life and finances together, and this is one of the biggest things hanging over my head.

A few years ago, I financed a Mercedes-Benz GLE in my name for someone I knew who was running a car rental business. The agreement was that he'd handle the vehicle and make the payments.

Long story short, the car ended up getting into an accident and has been sitting at his shop in the Bronx for over THREE YEARS now.

He's become pretty much unresponsive. Every once in a while, we'd have a conversation about getting things straightened out, but nothing ever came of it.

Meanwhile, the loan with Ally Financial went into default and eventually got charged off. The balance is somewhere around $60K.

Now, before everyone starts telling me how stupid this was, trust me, I know. Lol.

I'm not going to sit here and make excuses. During that period of my life, I was dealing with a pretty serious drinking problem. I wasn't paying attention to my finances, wasn't following up on things I should've been handling, and honestly just let a lot of stuff spiral out of control.

I've since gotten sober and have been making a real effort to get my life back in order. I've been tackling my debts, working on my credit, and trying to clean up the mess I made over the years.

But this Mercedes situation has me stuck.

The car is still at his shop. I have text messages documenting our conversations, including him acknowledging his responsibility for the vehicle and payments. But at this point, I don't even know what condition the car is in or what my options are.

I'm fully aware that because the loan is in my name, Ally probably doesn't care what agreement I had with this guy. I understand that part.

What I'm trying to figure out is:

  1. Do I have any legal recourse against this person, considering our agreement and the fact that he's had the car for over three years?

  2. Can I demand the vehicle back even though the loan is charged off?

  3. Should I be contacting Ally to try to negotiate something, or would that potentially make things worse?

  4. Could I possibly get him to take some responsibility for the debt through legal action?

  5. What kind of attorney would I even need for something like this?

I'm in NJ, and the car and his shop are in NYC.

I'm not expecting some miracle where I walk away from a $60K debt. I know I put myself in this position, and I'm willing to deal with the consequences.

I just don't want to keep ignoring it, especially now that I'm finally in a better place in life.

I've worked pretty hard to turn things around, and this is one of those things from my past that keeps coming back to haunt me.

If anyone has been through something similar or can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm just trying to figure out my next move without making another expensive mistake.

Thanks in advance.

Immigration Abusive immigrant husband filed for VAWA

• Upvotes

Location: Massachusetts

This dude came and took 200% advantage of my grief and knew how much I wanted a family and so he moved me to the other side of the country and abandoned me and my 2 previous kids and my pregnant body, he lied and cheated and abandoned me completely after having a severely traumatic birth, he would literally walk past the baby and not even say HI. He is a master manipulator and I fell for all of it. It was fraud from the beginning but he came to town on the 19th and we were married on the 22nd, I was in such shock I didn’t even realize what was happening and he knew it. He asked all the right questions to make sure that he could do whatever he wanted to me and I wouldn’t say a word. Recently I found out he had already knew people in the city he brought me to but never once told me anything about anything other than a woman who worked in immigration was helping him and 2 years later I find out this woman is a constable in the same city he was in immediately after I moved here, only thing is that he had her serve me divorce proceedings and she lied about her name and everything and illegally gained entry into my building through saying she worked for the state and she said she didn’t know my husband but when I looked into it more deeply, I gave her proof that she did know him and she finally admitted it a few weeks later. Now I’m scared for mine and my kids lives but no one is helping because this woman works for the government and so does her husband. I don’t know what to do because he took me away from my family and lied to them to get me here and now he’s claiming VAWA because I told him that if he didn’t help with his son, I was going to call immigration on him.

The worst part is that I had lost my 2nd brother to suicide a year before meeting this guy and I was in a place where I just wanted to feel loved and he had watched my videos of my life after my brothers loss and seen how broken I was and he took complete advantage of me in every single way. I know that I shouldn’t have said bad things to him but he knowingly gave me herpes and after my traumatic birth where I had a bad dr and no pain medication (took 2 years to diagnose me because no one wanted to find the doctor liable) and he wouldn’t even help me pull my pants up or hold my hand while I was pushing and I told him a million times before I agreed to move, that I needed someone to be safe with my mental health after delivery because I was scared of getting postpartum depression and not having my family around and he told me a million times that he would never leave me and my kids and that he would always be there for us no matter what and I believed him, yet he left me and my pregnant body with 2 kids and all of our luggage on the cape for a week completely alone and knowing nothing about living here.

He won 45,000 in September (he’s a BADDDDD) gambling addict) and didn’t buy his kid a single thing for his birthday in that same month. He is a criminal and I have proof of it. He financially is now trying to hide his money trail after I told him that he had better give his real income info.

I knew the guy was lying and screwing me over from the beginning but he convinced me that I was just paranoid and to relax but I still never documented my marriage to him because I know it’s not real, I know because I met him on Reddit for that reason, I just thought that he had really fallen in love with me, that’s the only reason why I got pregnant. Oh yeah, he made sure to mention that when I sent him my apple health info, “I have your fertility information” and then made a trip there the next month on the day my period started and he left after forcing me to get a blood test to document it.

He now wants the baby, sole custody, even though he hasn’t been there for 2 years now and he tried to get me to sign the paperwork for divorce in August and when I wouldn’t, he said that now I can’t leave and it’s going to cost us both a lot of money. Sad part is that the only reason why I didn’t sign it is because I needed money to get back to my family because I know that once I signed those documents, I would never see him again and I would be even more screwed.

I want to tell the truth to them about the entire thing but I know immigration has nothing to do with him being a father but this man drove me to attempt suicide when my baby was 11 months old because he abandoned me while I was postpartum and physically debilitated and I know that’s going to be used against me.

I have sought help from everyone I could the last 2 years, school, church, the state and I had contacted the state and talked about him abusing me but I was too scared to file a restraining order due to him being the only person I knew here and now I see that there’s a possibility that if I had, I may not be alive anymore after finding out how deep this hole goes.

He told me that the two friends who came to the wedding were already going to Oregon for a baby shower because one guy went to school with the other guy but the truth is that he had his friends fly in and use my address to get drivers license, none of this I knew about until recently when it was found out that he was really close to the person he said he didn’t even know and that made me feel completely lost because my mom almost lost a 3rd child and my children almost lost their mother and my spine and nervous system will never be the same again.

I’m completely devastated and lost because I don’t know anyone and I have 3 kids to take care of while being in therapy 2 times a week and not having a car and having to walk/jog 3+ hours a day to take my kids back and forth to school.

Other Civil Matters Sunrun hooked our solar up to the wrong meter for 4 years

Location: San diego California

Hi everyone It is just as the title says. 4 years ago Sunrun contracted out to freedom forever and our solar system was hooked up to the buildings meter and electricity box. So not only did we have an average $300 SDGE bill we also had to pay an average $90 to Sunrun. I tried multiple times to call and have them come look at it... nothing, or worse they gave us the run around for hours! My husband and I are both active duty and sometimes we both werent home to fix or forcibly follow up with sunrun. What should we do. Now that its fixed i want some reimbursement for the over $12468 ($3379 of that to sunrun) we had to pay to sunrun and SDGE. We received this email this morning and i dont know what to think! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

One thing my manager recommended is reaching out to your utility company to see if they would be able to review your billing history and potentially make any adjustments or provide reimbursement for the solar savings you should have been receiving. Since the system was connected to the wrong meter, it's possible that one of your neighboring units was receiving the benefits of the solar production during that time while you were not. Your utility company would be in the best position to review how the electricity was being credited and determine if any adjustments can be made to those previous bills.

Regarding compensation from Sunrun, my manager also reviewed the circumstances surrounding the issue. From what we can see, the solar system itself has been operating and producing power as expected. Unfortunately, because the system was connected to the incorrect utility meter, the benefits of that production were not being applied to your account as intended. This issue was only recently brought to our attention, which is why it had not been identified or addressed sooner.

While Sunrun's responsibility includes ensuring the solar system is operating properly, we also understand that the incorrect meter connection has caused a significant inconvenience, especially considering how long this has been going on.

With that being said, my manager has approved a courtesy compensation offer of $`1,500 in recognition of the inconvenience this situation has caused.

I understand that this may not make up for the solar savings you believe you've missed out on over the past four years, and I don't want to minimize your concerns. This is also why we're recommending that you speak with your utility company about reviewing the previous billing periods, as they may be able to provide more information about what adjustments, if any, can be made.

Please let me know your thoughts on the `$1,500 offer and whether you'd like to move forward with it. If you have any questions or would prefer to discuss everything over the phone, I'd be happy to arrange a call.

Dad's widow moved out without telling me and took his furniture, electronics, items, etc. Recovery of stolen items?

Location: New York City

I live in a house with my father's widow, he passed last year. The will says that I am to receive "all of the residue and remainder of my gross estate, real and personal". I am the only beneficiary receiving 100% as stated in the will, and also the sole executor of the will. Well, apparently she didn't like that, so she decided to leave while I was at work and take everything from upstairs; the living room furniture, the TVs, his clothing, bedspreads, computers, even his personal documents. I live in NYC and would like to know the next steps. Looking online it seems I need to make a police report, but whether I need to call 911 or a lawyer or something I'm unsure of. Is there anyway I can recover the stolen items? I don't really have receipts for them since he bought a lot of these things over a decade ago. Thank you.

Edit: I also don't know where she went, assuming the police would be able to find that out.

Edit: She wasn’t married to my dad, and they had no prenuptial or prearranged agreement / contract. They simply lived together. She and I received money from his TOD accounts, split 50/50. Outside of the house, we are equal in inheritance.

I'm not sure if I did a hit and run, or what to do

I was at a restaurant Location: GA, and I was pulling out of my spot, the lady in the spot next to me was actually parked slightly in my spot though I know that doesn't really matter. anyways I was pulling out I didn't hear or feel anything while I was pulling out but I saw a scrape on their car, I didn't think I did it but I parked in the same lot right away, to check my car for scrapes. I have several scrapes on my car already and I couldn't see like a fresh one, but idk. I wasn't sure, I didn't think I did it, but I wanted to do the right thing so I called my dad to ask what to do. while I was on the phone I saw her walk right by the scrape without seeming to notice it, though she was probably distracted, get in her car and leave. I hadn't left yet, but I guess I should of waited outside idk, I waited for a bit then just left cause I didn't know what to do. The thing about her scrape though was it looked fresh and white idk.

My 13 year was sexually harassed, bullied, blackmailed, and ignored! What do I do next besides wait?

Location: VA (Middle School)

An explicit photo of my 13 year old son was taken without his knowledge or consent while he was using the restroom at school before football practice. The photo was airdropped around the school and passed around group chats. For 2 1/2 weeks my son informed school officials of the incident via verbal communication, text message, written incident reports (I have them all). They ignored his request from the time the image was taken and because of this it made its way to Tiktok majority of the school and surrounding schools students were tagged in it. He was forced to fight or they would threaten to post it.

Once everything hit the fan I filed a police report and phones have been confiscated, I initiated a title IX investigation with the school board, CPS has been notified and I am waiting on a call, I reported the knowing administration to the licensure department in Virginia, I placed a Sexual harassment complaint at ed.gov/ocr, I put a take it down request on the official website to have as much of it removed as possible. I also reported it to TikTok who reported it to the police who sent a confirmation of the explicit image and removal.

My Concern: THEY ARE GOING TO TRY TO BRUSH THIS UNDER THE RUG AND ALL PARTIES INVOVLED WILL RECIEVE LITTLE TO NO CONSEQUENCES!!!

I have been hearing things from other individuals in the area about the school and how they handle things. (Mind you all this is hearsay) What I have heard is there are more students who have been through the same thing as my son but they are afraid to report it. I have also heard stories from parents about the school district denying disability rights to students and about a teacher who was pulling an autistic child's hair throughout the year and being very nasty to him. Instead of removing her from the school they just moved her around. I have heard this same story from 3 different people about the teacher. My other child use to say she was very mean but I did not know how bad.

Won a $16k judgment against an LLC, now they're liquidating equipment and I'm worried I'll never see a dime. How would you handle this?

Location: Nebraska

I'm a small excavation contractor. Last year I sold about $15,400 worth of crushed concrete to another contractor who never paid me. Ended up taking them to court, got a default judgment in December, and with interest and costs they now owe me somewhere around $17k.

The judgment is against their LLC, not the owners personally.

We did a debtor's examination back in March and found out the company had a maxed out $100k line of credit, about $90k owed on a pickup, $54k owed on a skid steer, and a bunch of other equipment. Most of the financing is through the same local bank.

They also claimed to have about $98k in government receivables outstanding at the time, but I have no idea where that money ended up.

They auctioned off some attachments and miscellaneous equipment in April, bringing about $39k gross from the lots I've been able to identify. I never received a penny of it, despite the owner telling us during the debtor's exam that he'd pay my invoice out of those proceeds.

Now they're getting ready to auction off more equipment later this month, and I'm beginning to suspect they're completely liquidating the business.

My attorney has been working toward a sheriff's execution sale, which obviously isn't ideal for anybody. The debtor's attorney has now suggested making my company a joint payee on the upcoming auction proceeds check, along with the LLC and the bank.

Here's where I'm struggling.

If the bank is owed more than the equipment brings, I could end up with absolutely nothing. And if they're shutting the LLC down anyway, what incentive do they have to ever pay the remaining balance? They could file bankruptcy or just leave me with a judgment against an empty LLC.

From my perspective, I'd rather see the equipment bring good money at a regular auction than force a sheriff sale. But I also don't particularly feel like giving up the only leverage I have without some assurance I'm actually going to get paid.

I've even considered pushing for the bank to finance whatever shortfall remains on my judgment as part of the liquidation. I don't really give a shit whether the debtor owes me the money or owes the bank the money afterward. I just want my invoice paid.

I'm not looking to bankrupt anybody or make their life miserable. I delivered the material, they used it, and I expect to get paid for it.

So I guess my questions are:

  • Would you use the threat of a sheriff sale to negotiate a guaranteed payment before agreeing to cooperate with the auction?
  • Is there any realistic incentive for the bank to help settle a relatively small judgment to avoid complications with the liquidation?
  • If the LLC sells everything and the secured creditors take all the proceeds, is there realistically anything left worth pursuing?
  • Am I missing any leverage here?

I have an attorney handling the case, and obviously I'll be discussing any actual decisions with him. Just interested in hearing from people who've dealt with something similar, especially contractors, creditors, or attorneys who handle collections.

At this point I'm starting to think I might be completely screwed out of the money.

Insurance kept denying my MRI for 10 months, turned out I had cancer. Do I have any legal options?

2.5k Upvotes

My location: Illinois

Towards the end of 2023 I started experiencing some pretty bad pain in my leg. Over the next 10 months I went to multiple doctors trying to figure out what was going on. They kept doing X-rays, which weren’t showing anything, and recommending I get an MRI.

The problem was my insurance company kept denying the MRI. They insisted that I had to go through 4 months of physical therapy before they would even consider approving it. I did the PT, but it only made the pain worse, and even afterwards I was still having trouble getting the MRI approved.

Eventually, a family friend who is also a doctor really went to bat for me and helped me finally get the MRI. I couldn’t afford to pay for one out of pocket since I had just gotten married and money was pretty tight.
Well, in September 2024, almost 10 months after this whole thing started, I was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. The tumor wasn’t showing up on any of the X-rays, but was very clearly visible on the MRI.

What followed was months of chemotherapy and a major surgery where they had to remove part of the bones in my leg and replace them with metal.
I want to make it clear that I don’t blame my doctors. They were trying to get me an MRI and were being blocked by insurance. My frustration is entirely with the insurance company.

Obviously I can’t know for sure what would’ve happened if the cancer had been caught earlier, but I can’t help wondering if I could’ve avoided some of the chemotherapy or even the surgery that permanently changed my leg.

I’ve been wanting to look into taking legal action against the insurance company, but I’ve spoken to a few lawyers and none of them really seem to know what type of attorney I should even be looking for. I’m honestly not sure where to start.

Another concern is whether I’ve waited too long. I was diagnosed in September 2024, but between the chemo, surgery, recovery and just trying to get my life back together, pursuing a lawsuit wasn’t exactly at the top of my list. I’m only now at a point where I feel ready to look into it.

Is there a specific type of lawyer who handles cases against health insurance companies for delayed diagnoses due to denied testing? And is it potentially too late to pursue anything?

I’m not expecting anyone here to tell me I definitely have a case, I just want to know if there’s even a direction worth looking into.

Any advice would really be appreciated!

Who can legally assist with requesting that a medical examiner reconsider the cause of an equivocal death?

Location: Michigan

A person died at home with a new partner of four months in the house. New partner states that they argued, went to different parts of the home, then woke up the next day to find the person had died.

Police conducted a perfunctory 1.75 hour investigation that included no interviews with even the partner (other than the initial contact at the scene) or family members of the deceased, concluding in that time frame that the death was by suicide. Everything told to them by the partner was reported as fact in all official documents.

A physician’s assistant conducted a 45 minute autopsy that included no x-rays, no independently taken photos, limited lab tests, and even missed evidence clearly shown in scene photos. The physician medical examiner signed off on the death certificate without doing their own inquiry.

The person was cremated.

Years later, another law enforcement agency was requested to look into the case and found numerous mistakes were made by the first agency and likely concealed. Because of local politics, the second agency doesn’t want to get further involved, so stopped their very competent detective from working on it further— so the investigation has stopped. It was mentioned that the only way they would be compelled to continue is if the ME changed the cause of death from suicide to “suspicious” or “unknown.” The PA who conducted the autopsy has retired and the ME physician has moved to another state. The second LEA has amassed hundreds of pages of evidence that casts serious doubt on the original cause of death.

What would be the next step, and who would be the one to do it? The family has been quietly involved behind the scenes, the competent detective has been moved to a different unit, a new investigator has been “named” but has done zero work as it is not a priority.

Loan Provider Never Gave Me My Money But Im Paying For It

Title. Long story short I linked my bank account to Avant a loan provider, but I didn't finish the whole process because I decided against it. I find out I'm paying monthly for the loan, but I never got the money. I contacted customer support and I was told to send a bank statement, so I did. Then I'm told it was already sent and to contact my bank, so I did. There was nothing the bank could do. I tried putting a stop on the payments and that won't work. What is my next best course of action?

Experiencing multiple instances of stop and ID requests in DE.

Location: Delaware. I have recently moved to northern Delaware, and for the first time in my life I have been (walking on a sidewalk) stopped by an officer and demanded to show ID and explain what I’m doing. I understand Delaware is a stop and ID state, but I’m unclear on whether or not I am required to identify myself if there is no reasonable suspicion of any involvement to crime.

My question is whether or not I have a right to refuse identifying myself while walking if I am not being detained? Would I be able to legally decline the request? I’d like to say that i prefer not too, and i wont do so unless i am being detained for some reason.

Thanks in advance everyone. Sorry if this has been asked before. I did try to search for a post that would answer my question.
