I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by Frank’s admiration being earned by Peter.

u/villa139 Jul 31 '26

Reminded me of Ultimate Cap talking about Peter; "when you grow up, you are going to be the best of us."

351

u/PeterParker72 Jul 31 '26

That really does sum it up right there.

Frank cosplaying as Spider-Man was peak MCU. 😄

956

u/JackFisherBooks Jul 31 '26

You could tell Jon Burnthal was having a blast in that scene.

870

u/CnlSandersdeKFC Aug 01 '26

You can tell Bernthal is having a blast this whole film, but for me the stand out was definitely the possession scenes. It was just really funny seeing Bernthal strike these effete poses. Everyone was doing really great body work in this film, and I gotta know who was the body coach.

367

u/UndeadT Aug 01 '26

His voice control to sound like Jean speaking through him was awesome.

426

u/CnlSandersdeKFC Aug 01 '26

I gotta say, somehow Jean’s depiction is rock solid across… what like 7, 8 different actors before we actually see Sadie?

We’re introduced to Jean through like nearly a dozen different actors playing her throughout this film, but there never seems to be a noticeable discontinuity. That is some phenomenal directing and character coach dedication going on behind the camera.

It was the most comic book-feeling comic book movie which has come out of the MCU for a while. Plenty of crossover and interaction between characters from different corners of Marvel, it was excellent

It felt more grounded and was a joy to experience street-level Spidey after years of globe/universe-trotting adventures

Oh and the suit looks impeccable 😮‍💨

595

u/Pen_dragons_pizza Jul 31 '26

You are right, it was great to watch.

I have always wanted crossover like this in all mcu movies which don’t jsut feel like cameos.

Hulk, Jean and frank all served actual purpose, not jsut for fans to point at the screen

279

u/ProfessorXWheelchair Winter Soldier Jul 31 '26

yup, first mcu movie in a long time that felt lije we were in a shared universe without being forced. felt like the old mcu again

I liked how the swinging visuals took inspiration from the TASM movies and the videos games mainly. It was beautiful

The extra wide shot of him standing on top of the train right before he visited Yelena was so Insomniac-coded I loved it.

Even the fighting moves like the finisher he used against The Hand was straight from them.

Agreed, the suit is fantastic.

We used to get sick crossovers all the time, Spidey and Black Panther in Cap, Dr. Strange in Thor, the list goes on. Since Endgame the crossover has always felt so cameo-like instead. Finally having a movie that combines everything is awesome. The main cast of this movie is Spider-Man and his two best friends, Hulk, Black Widow, The Punisher, and fucking Jean Grey of all people. That's so freaking cool.

858

u/CruzAderjc Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

If you told me in 2012 after I leave the theater watching Avengers 1 that we’ll get an MCU movie in the same continuity where Spider-man gets shot by Punisher using a sniper rifle, but only because he was trying to kill Jean Grey, who was talking to Aunt May. But Punisher was just trying to kill Jean Grey because she used her powers to do dangerous shit like controlling the Hulk. And that’s probably why Spider-Man and Hulk won’t be around in the next movie when Thor assembles the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four to fight Dr. Doom.

I would be like what the fuck did you just say.

366

u/CrisVas3 Jul 31 '26

If you had told me "Yeah, Aunt May somewhat kicks off the X-Men post-death by way of her ghost/memory talking down a rogue Jean Grey in a Spider-Man movie" I would've lost my mind.

124

u/flibber_deez_gibbets Aug 01 '26

And yet, it's so good. I am LOVING how they're bringing mutants in this way. Spidey is becoming the connective web of the MCU, turns out. But still, despite all that, it was still a grounded Spider-Man story. This is the promise of the MCU, just having a rich world with a wide cast of characters that you can set stories in

There's some irony in the fact that in that scene early on in the film between Spider-Man and Metzger, when Metzger says he has no clue what V-Max is, thats what made me think "well he's lying and he's clearly bad"

and yet it turns out he genuinely had no clue what V-Max was

and the V-Max payoff itself was both brilliant and sad

She was well cast. Her facial acting was great in all the silent scenes where’s she’s using her power, and when she’s being tortured. Very believable and expressive. She’s going to be great in the X-men live action reboot.

It's so sad that it wasn't some grand, intended message. It was just the last thing her mind processed. A scared girl's dying breath.

872

u/KouNurasaka Jul 31 '26

V Max is one of the darkest things I've ever seen in a film in a good while. If you spend more than 2 mins thinking aboit it, that is some dark shit.

443

u/Xygnux Aug 01 '26

Yeah there were plenty of brainwashing and human experimentations done in the MCU before, but it's almost always an adult character's origin story and/or you see that they are at least physically fine afterwards even if mentally scarred.

To show that the government literally experimented a kid to death and her dying thought just feels that much more horrifying.

I was a bit iffy on them making Jean Grey the villain... But after that yeah her actions are understandable.

187

u/Ok-Amount3384 Aug 02 '26

I would classify Jean's role her as an antagonist instead of villain per se.

Him yelling "get out of the building" was really upsetting! Felt so bad for the guy.

1.3k

Him asking if anyone was hurt when they were putting him in the ambulance was so heart breaking. Big Hulk fan, I really love when Bruce gets to actually be worried if he hurt people as Hulk. A lot of modern comics like to make him cold and distant and I'm glad they have continued to avoid that interpretation.

Technically it already existed when Wanda was in custody in Civil War. She was wearing something in her neck.

1.3k

u/Tacodogz Jul 31 '26

The part that gets Bruce scared is when Peter mentions them automatically adjusting to an individual's DNA. So whereas they might have had to specially design an inhibitor for Wanda, they now can mass produce the things and slap them on any mutant as soon as the x-gene manifests

Well, that too but also Matt's sanctimonious and judgey and acts morally superior while also loving the darkness and enjoying the violence. He fights crime to clean up the streets but also to let the devil out so it's self serving. But Peter's just a pure ball of genuine goodness fighting crime with 100% pure intentions and while truly morally superior, isn't self righteous and judgey about it.

They are job buddies and Frank just happens to be older and a bit more experienced. He doesn’t necessarily needs to teach Peter anything new about it but he can always advice a thing or two about life stuff (and as well learn some stuff back too)

I guess this movie answers that need as well.

733

u/sable-king Vision Aug 01 '26

A lot of people overlook the fact that a lot of the fear of mutants is due to the widespread propaganda about mutants becoming so common that they’ll one day replace humanity. It’s the evolution angle that makes those people afraid of people who are born with powers and not people who got powers through external circumstances like Spidey and Cap.

I feel like no one is talking about this.

But how fucking funny was it when Spider-man lost control of his powers, and when he was uncontrollably webslinging, he actually punched a bird. And he’s like “i’m sorry, i’m sorry!” And the punched bird was just stuck on him and we see it in first person and he’s just trying to get this punched bird off of him while flailing around swinging.

I was fucking dying from laughing.

They killed it. Deserves the hype.

Spidey swinging scenes were amazing. Fights were incredible. Destin Daniel Cretton just solidified himself as a critical director for Marvel Studios, if he hadn’t already.

Jon Bernthal added so much to this movie, I’m really glad they let his character shine here. I was surprised at how much he was in it, to be honest.

For being so long the movie never really dragged. Great use of Hulk without overdoing it.

Zendaya got a really good showcase here. I predicted that twist but the theatre collectively gasped.

Sadie Sink was great if a little under-utilized. Very excited for her future here. And the Florence Pugh role was perfect. My god Tom Holland is jacked…?

I loved it, going to go see it again next week.

I'm surprised how antagonistic they've made Jean in this movie. This version of Jean is probably the edgiest version of the character to date not counting Dark Phoenix.

582

u/skyeguye Yondu Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Which is great, because the other dark pheonix arcs have seeming come out of nowhere - it’s important to put enough edge into the character to make the heel turn feel earned.

293

u/Squirrelkid11 Jul 31 '26

I was skeptical at first of Jean being an antagonist and especially in a Spider-Man film, it felt out of place and a weird decision at first. But the movie executed it very well and her reasons for becoming an antagonist by keeping her background as a character intact and redeeming her rather than just making her a stereotypical pure evil villain Spider-Man has to face. Glad she didn't get the Jumba in the Lilo & Stitch live action remake treatment which is her being stripped of her good qualities and making her just a villain with no redemption.

I loved it. Really enjoyed that him and MJ had a decent resolution without getting back together. She presents a logical argument and lets him down as gently as a situation like that could be. And he accepts it, and lets her go. It was well done, and left the door open for them to have a relationship going forward, whatever that entails.

And he gets Ned back. Right? I assume because Ned has latent magic ability, that contributed to him breaking the spell when the handshake happened. He definitely looked to me like he suddenly remembered his friend.

I think the spell just doesn't care about muscle memory (it's not like the muscles/nervous system knows its reacting to "Peter Parker", it's just a series of movements).

In any case Ned becoming his best friend again is, by the nature of friendships, a lot easier. Being a lover is different.

315

u/Aqua_Tot Aug 01 '26

I thought it was really cool how she was like “look, I don’t know you, I don’t love you… but if you want to like, just hang out and chill, maybe we could become friends again. Let’s start there.”

Such a good way to handle that situation from all parties, I’m glad it’s not another Star Lord / Gamora situation.

Felt like prime phase 1/2 with how well they built up the universe and planted the seeds for future movies, especially the upcoming mutant epidemic.

Spidey created the first inhibitor which will subjugate mutants all over the world

Banner will have a rocky relationship with the X Men going forward, as one of their founding members just ruined his reputation.

Peter and Jean’s mutations evolved over the course of the film, which will happen to several X Men characters

Damage Control will most likely become stronger and the face of anti-mutant propaganda due to Jean’s actions

And so on. Such a great foundational film for the universe while also just being a damn good film.

1.3k

u/Livid_Weather Jul 31 '26

That first comment is dead on. This is the first marvel movie in a while for me where it felt like they were living in the MCU but the universe wasn't forced.

I’ve been wondering how they are gonna handle the main X-Men storyline of mutants being viewed as bad when superheros have saved the world like 10x at this point and Avengers are well regarded…the difference between a mutant and a God, Radiation survivor, Super Solider, advanced tech hero, alien, etc. is very blurry. It seems the mutations that keep changing, and not controlled, could be the sticking point.

468

u/AllCity_King Jul 31 '26

Jean certainly hasn’t given them a great start

256

u/7screws Daredevil Jul 31 '26

Exactly. Between her actions and some propaganda by damage control and some wacko politician it’s easy to sway public opinion. Hell even the avengers (or some of them) were on the run because they refused to sign the agreements

I love how they kept the essence of the Netflix character while still balancing it for a more light-hearted movie. And the fact that his family (the actress in the photos still being the original one) and his guilt is mentioned says a lot about how much they respect the iteration.

Even in his own show he was a wisecracker sometimes so I personally didn't mind him being the comic relief sometimes in the movie

Both a brilliant Spider-Man movie and a brilliant MCU movie. It finally gave us a Tom Holland street level film with smaller stakes.

I thought that was the best the web swinging has ever seen/felt - it really made me feel like I was there in the moment. I also thought it was the best the action scenes have been in a Spidey film - they might not have been big battles against a super villain but the way they were choreographed and filmed brought them up a level.

Jon Bernthal stole the show, finally felt like my Punisher stock has paid off after 10 years and now a much wider audience will see that he's one of the best cast characters Marvel has right now. Every scene with him was golden. Hulk scene was awesome too. Have to shout out Tom Holland and Zendaya, thought that was the best that both have been in a Spidey film, and Sadie Sink was brilliant too.

There's honestly too much to talk about with this movie, but I loved it and for me it's probably one of the best post-Endgame films and one of the better Spider-Man movies, 9/10

327

True. The same thing happened in the comics. Initially, she only had telekinesis. It wasn't until later (and with additional stress/trauma) that her telepathy emerged. In other universes, it's flipped (telepathy and then TK). This movie captured that dynamic perfectly.

The ending feels like Peter and MJ can get a fresh start, which actually really works well for their maturing. It's one thing to see a high school romance continue and another to see two people mostly grown into adults fall in love.

I love having the visual of how her powers are growing. It shows it in the usual way ("getting more angry") and a scientific way (her brain is rewiring itself and learning to activate multiple pathways at once).

This one really tugs at the heartstrings several times throughout the movie in ways that the previous MCU Spidey movies failed to do. MJ confronting Peter about the letter, Jean and Peter having a heart to heart, and Frank at the hospital. There's just so much heart.

I even got kinda emotional during the swinging sequence early on in the movie, which might be the most exhilarating web-swinging ever put on screen.

Most comments have already gushed on the excellent fight scenes, the Punisher, Jean, Ned, MJ and the plot, but I also want to point out how refreshing Detective Dewolf is for Peter. She's like a maternal guardian for him, with their calls and banter, like a parent and child but also as colleagues, compared to No Way Home where Peter os often treated as a criminal. Those talks with Dewolf on having Spider-Man take a break and rest is a really great direction, and I'm looking forward to more Dewolf in the future.

Ned’s face lighting up as he says “Peter” and Peter himself looking like he’s about to cry in joy at the end might be the second most uplifted I’ve ever felt at a Marvel movie (the first being Rocket whooping in Vol 3)

340

u/skyeguye Yondu Jul 31 '26

100%. And (like the Rocket scene) the music helped so much. In the beginning of the movie, you have the same soft instrumentation as the end, and it plays the Home Spider-Man theme- but the middle half of the theme (the high notes) are cut off. But when he approaches Ned, it starts the same way and then, when they start doing the handshake you hear the full, original theme song and it’s so satisfying - like the uplift has returned to complete what was broken.

Check out the tracks “Web Letter Days” and “Better Off Ned” to see it.

Very good movie. Pleasantly surprised by Yelena's appearance, and Frank was surprisingly heavily involved in the story. I assumed he'd be a brief appearance, but he actually stuck around, and I really like that they had a relationship pre-movie.

I really like how the movie didn't try to fan service anything. The story just kept moving, and didn't make a big deal of the fact that we had Spider-Man, Jean Grey, The Punisher, and the Hulk all in one fight scene at one point. Just peak comic book madness, but each character knew their own limits. Frank being genuinely terrified when the real Hulk turned up was great.

Long term, this feels like they have set up the anti-mutant arc for future X-Men movies if/when Peter's tech gets picked up and used to nullify mutants.

Saw it last night! It was quite a fun web slinging time.

Loved just getting to see Spidey swing through New York. Lots of new camera angles with that that I appreciated.

It’s actually kinda wild how much Tom Holland’s face is hidden in this movie. He’s under the mask for a good portion of it! If it was him in the suit for those non action scenes, he does a great job acting with his body

Man, Punisher was just the best in this movie. They really made him work for PG-13. I imagine lots of kids going home wanting to watch/know more lmao

I hope Spider Man 5 has Daredevil in a similar sized role. I so badly want that for Charlie Cox. It’d be a dream come true

I can definitely see where Rosario Dawson’s Night Nurse scene was cut. I think they should’ve left her scene in.

Yelena was hilarious as always. One heck of an office she has!

Sadie Sink as Jean Grey was of course obvious, and yet I still loved it. Her and Peter as a team in future movies could be EPIC! Throughout the end of this movie, she was definitely getting in my feels. Her character is so strong, her powers went through the theater screen haha. Her scene with May was especially touching. Cant wait to see her (likely) lead an X Men movie!

The rooftop scene with Peter and MJ gave me chills. Might be my favorite scene along with Jean’s end scene

Wish there was a better mid credit scene to tease what’s to come in doomsday!

Destin Daniel Cretton has been posting a bunch of behind the scenes highlighting the different departments and people working on the movie on Instagram and the passion they all have for it really comes through in the movie. Amazing stunts, practical effects and actual filming locations. Creative web-swinging that had me itching to pick up my PlayStation controller.

No additional existing character was treated as a quick “cameo”, they all impacted and added cohesiveness to the universe. Sadie Sink was great as Jean Grey, especially the scene where she finds out what V-max is, can’t wait to see more of her. Would’ve loved to see more of the other villains who only briefly appeared, but I’m hoping they’re saving it for a sinister six movie down the line.

It’s a shame Sony is hogging Spider-Man, because after seeing his chemistry with the Punisher I’d die for him to show up in Daredevil or just anything else honestly, the more Spider-Man the better. Hopefully the inhibitor Peter made and “gave” Damage Control access to has some consequences explored in the upcoming X-men movie that forces them to include him.

I thought there were a few subtle but great nods to how the mechanics of webslinging would actually work (there was a brief reference to this in Homecoming and also the training in the forest scene in Into the Spider-Verse), like when Peter was one-handed swinging with MJ and you can see him roll his wrist and pull himself forward, instead of just "Spider-Man grabs invisible vine and swings." Was definitely impressed with the attention to detail.

It was perfect. Just perfect. They struck the right balance in all criteria. The suit was grounded but supported by tech. There was a rollercoaster of emotion, no excess jokes, decent break in between action scenes.

Jean Grey's introduction blew me away and the girl did fantastic acting. The connection between Jean and Peter was built nicely.

I think this is the way to go for Marvel - small scale crossovers (2-3 supporting characters). 1 large Avengers event in about 6-7 years.

To get a Spider-Man movie featuring prominent characters like The Hulk, Punisher & Jean Grey was unbelievable a decade ago. And to tell a great S-M story while having several heroes & villains without feeling bloated is also a great achievement.

This movie was honestly so fucking good. The story expanded on the ending of NWH exceptionally without undoing the spell, it felt very comic bookie, the cinematography & action were great.

DDC was the perfect director for this movie and between this, Shang-Chi & Wonder-Man, he’s proven himself to be one of the best directors Marvel Studios has had.

Peter: You, you have me

This is why Peter is the GOAT, why Spiderman is the GOAT. He knows what she is going through, and for him to be her rock and for her to be his rock 😭

There wasn't a traditional villain or big-bad, but man, what a great character driven movie. A movie about Peter Parker and Spiderman, two faces of the same coin. Jean who is alone and trying to find a purpose, which leads Peter/Jean to be each others shoulder to lean on in a big world.

I cannot stress this enough but absolutely fucking everyone came to this movie.

Normally movies are packed with their target attendee. If you tried to make me guess what this movie was based just on demographic data I couldn't do it.

Kids, Teens, Adults, Greybeards. Men, Women, every single skin color you can imagine. I saw costumed super mega nerds, clueless moms just happy to be there, excited but confused girlfriends, starry eyed couples, grandfathers sheepherding toddlers, gaggles of teens and 20 somethings, little boys and girls who were obviously at their first spiderman movie in theatre.

There was a teenage boy in a fucking Charlie Kirk sweater in the mass of waiting for the next showing which was also roughly 20% throngs of progressive looking stereotypes

People just really like Spiderman.

It was a great movie, loved the scope, this is what a Spiderman movies should be. Wish Marvel would move away from half baked cost managed CGI scenes. The non CGI scenes really carried the film.

Just popping in to say that Endgame's opening record of $357 million is being dethroned as we speak.

Never thought Endgame's record would be beaten, but here we are. Spider-Man really is Marvel's Crown Jewel and in the end will always come on top. The movie was great. But I just want to take a moment to appreciate the experience.

I got to the movies and the parking lot was full. It's never full anymore.

There were people meeting and mingling with their friends in the lobby. Usually when I go, there's 1 or 2 people in line buying popcorn.

Every seat was full in the auditorium. But when the trailers stopped, everyone's attention was on the screen.

When the Jean Grey reveal happened, there were audible gasps, followed by hushed whispers all around.

People clapped at the end, and the lobby was full of people not ready to go home that just wanted to unpack what they just saw.

This was fun. And I miss this type of fun.
